Imagine if they were able to run 2 cars with Waltrip and Park. That would have been great, maybe he would have gotten a win or two in ‘99.
Maybe not a win… but perhaps consistent top 10 to top 15 finishes.
Darrell aged like fine wine as a driver. If only he had stayed at DEI for the last few years of his career. That man could drive!
I teared up then, and I still tear up now in that Pocono postrace interview. It showed that with good equipment he was still relevant.
Kinda funny how dale gave the waltrips a shot letting darrel drive the 1 then giving Michael Waltrip a ride in the 15
Dale raced him and knew he was a good driver. Might as well.
Jim Foxx will Dale sr was friends with the Waltrip bothers they might of been rivals on the track but off was different
@Blue2 Sierra dale dumped Darrell big time at Richmond and that left a bad taste in darrells mouth followed by the Winston in 95. Earnhardt wasn’t known exactly as Mr. Personality. But they needed each other so it worked.
Dale was a special human and somehow even with all of the rivalries and bumpers exchanged, he saw the best in his competitors and thought it would be fair to give DW and Mikey a shot. I wish he was still here, NASCAR would be in a different place if Dale was still here with us.
Too bad DW didn't stay in the 1 car, I think he had a win or two left in him.
Loved watching Waltrip compete in the 1. I got into the sport when he was in the 17 using the Champ provisional just to make every other race. Got a taste of what it must have been to watch him 10 years earlier.
Good to know that Darrell went out on a positive note and that Michael got his best cup years with DEI
DW was my favorite driver growing up. That orange Tide ride was so cool. I was ecstatic when he drove the 1. It's too bad they couldn't get a 2nd sponsor and team for him. He had a win or two left in the tank....just needed the right equipment. That 66 Kmart ride was not a great ending to his hall of fame career
I had forgotten that Park's injuries included missin' teeth. Dale got a first hand look at the safety improvements that were needed......It's a shame.
I will never forget that 1998 Pocono 500 finish. Not because of the Gordon and Mayfield battle, but because of Darrell Waltrip's finish. Even as a 7 year old kid I remember being surprised he was running so well because he had always been (in my young memory) a mid-pack driver. To watch this video and see JUST how awesome that finish was and just how competitive DW was with that 1 car, it was awesome to watch!
Damn, I thought you were close to my age. Guess not. LOL
@@swirvinirvan3789 In the NASCAR RUclips community, only Rusty Walrus is older than me, and thats not even by much lol. Me and Rusty are the "old geezers" lmao
I remember being 8 or 9 around this race and while DW wasn’t my main man (that was Ricky Rudd but he was struggling big time in 98 but that’s besides the point) I remember being actually so nervous I couldn’t watch it because I wanted DW to win so badly. Even though he didn’t win hearing him in his post race interview made me realize that in some instances there’s more to things than just getting the win.
When did DW win Daytona, 89? His domination days were well prior to that?
Its always funny when a young person says something like "my whole entire life", when making a point.
One of the best post race interviews I've ever seen. Raw, truth, and emotion. Beautiful. Gonna miss DW in da booth. Miss Steve Brynes too. RIP😓
Thedearster So true so true
We all miss Steve Brynes to this day!
I felt so happy for DW when he got in his "last fast ride" and did very well. I grew up watching him struggling with his own 17 team knowing how great he was before. The racing Gods gave him a chance to show that he still had it.
I like ol DW. He was never afraid to show his emotions and was a damn good driver in his day.
*Darn* good driver
Sad DW didn’t get put in a precursor to the 8 car or the 15 car. He could’ve split the 99 schedule with Junior. Junior already five races to prepare for 2000 and Waltrip would race the other 29. In 2000 he could have run the 15 car to prepare the team for the 2001 season. I know he would have scored several wins.
8 team was basically the 3 busch series team moving into cup. The 15 team was a new charter for 01 but I do wish DW could have had better equipment towards the end of his career hell he would have done better in the 25 car at HMS
Good point. He could have replaced Ricky Craven or something.
@@superbird4351 yeah even at 50 years old he was a better driver
Can’t blame Dale for signing the best available driver. Also from what I know he and Waltrip has buried the hatchet a few years before, so as a business man and team owner, Dale made the best hire he could’ve.
That Pocono post race interview with DW is amongst my favorite NASCAR interviews.
"Darrell, is pushing on the last lap legal?"
He's just givin' him a little bump draft
@@DepravedCoTApologist Yeah. That's what i'm talking about
Back then yeah. Nascar changes that rule every couple years, like lug nuts. "Screw it" one year. Fines and suspensions the next.
These videos are always 100k+ Subscriber quality, and it blows my mind every time. There might only be 16k of us now, but if you keep this quality up @BlackFlagsMatter you'll be in the youtube big leagues in no time.
I don't even watch NASCAR, but I love racing, and the way you tell these stories is second to none. I don't personally know anyone who was into NASCAR in its "golden era", but these videos make me miss it like I was there!
Fun fact: the #1 team's car chief in 1998 was one Chad Knaus!! Yes, THAT Chad Knaus!!
That interview with Steve Byrnes still gives me chills. That was awesome to see and I remember when that happened
Can’t help but think In an alternate universe Darrel was able to get his own car in DEI had great seasons and then in 2001 both he and Sr held off the field for either his brother or Jr to win daytona 500 and ended up being the happiest day in nascar instead of the saddest.
That would have been awesome
The DEI ride proved what DW could do in quality equipment once he knocked the "also ran" rust off. I would have loved to see ol' Jaws grab at least one more checkered flag.
*boogity boogity boogity intensifies*
Oh God, imagine Kevin Lepage in a DEI car in the late 90s-early 00s
I searched specifically for this DW interview after Pocono. I remember his run with DEI. Thank you for posting.
Dale Earnhardt Incorporated did not have much luck early in the 1998 Winston Cup Series season until Darrell Waltrip came along.
And they didn't have much luck after 2006 as well
Imagine if Darrell was able to run a second ride at dei.
It would have been Park in the 1 and Waltrip in the 14 in 99, with Dale jr part time. Then Dale jr would have gone full time in the 8 in 2000. I can see Michael Waltrip joining in the 15, with Darrell going part time and hanging on until 2002. Darrell might have gotten a win or two and probably would have had several top fives and tens. With that success I see him driving longer, even if it's just part time. Imagine Michael winning the 2001 500 pushed by Darrell, followed by Jr and Sr. You think that Darrell was emotional in the booth? Imagine if he'd pushed Mikey to the front. That's only one possibility, I know it probably would have turned out differently, but that's a really cool possibility.
Great video man. Had he been able to win a race in that car it would have went down as one of the most popular wins of all time. He proved he could still run up front given a good car. Had one more good/decent race in the 66 car at Indy in 2000.
Ol' DW was one of the really nice guys of NASCAR.
They wasn’t saying that in the 80s. The most hated driver of the 80s. And the winningest driver of the decade too
@@TheRealDill93 just like Jeff Gordon was hated in his early days because of all his success and now that’s he’s older everyone loves him
@Anonymous Guy like Hemric, a good driver who isn't bold enough
Not in the 80s
Speaking of 1998, here's an idea for a potential future series, "NASCAR Team Busts," case in point, ISM Racing. This team infamously hired Tod Bodine as the first of ultimately six drivers that drove the #35 Tabasco sponsored Pontiac Grand Prix that year. The farce surrounding them came to be known as the Tabasco Fiasco
Good video as always, Darian!
This is one part of DW's career that I've never heard of... Your video and the Racing Reference article made me know more about this story.
Good job! Keep up the great work.
Man you're everywhere! I see you on just about every Motorsport stream on RUclips
@@SwingAxleLover I know! (^_^)v
Thanks for putting this together! I was hoping at some point someone would discuss about dw riding with dei. That pocono race was the pinnacle moment for Ol' DW. I was pulling for him to win that day. The #1 Pennzoil car was one of my favorite color scheme cars and wanted to see that car up front. Since DW couldn't find better opportunities it was only fitting that Dale give him a chance. The #17 team was underfunded and lacked performance, The #36 'Tabasco Fiasco' was a joke, and that route 66 car was equally depressing...
I was sitting here thinking that Steve Park might have been brought up to early and that after the wreck at Atlanta he wasn't much to talk about other than the Rockingham win after Dale passed. But looking at his stats. 2 wins and 2 top 15 points finishes aren't nothing to sneeze at. What could have been should be the mantra for DEI. I mean maybe Darrell finishes out 98 sharing a ride with Steve Park and the 99 shares the 8 car with Jr, then in 2000 he runs a third car for his final season in cup that would end up being the 15 that would be Mikie's. Darrell could have been to DEI what Bill Elliott was to Evernham Motorsports... But again, what could have been.
Real interesting video, I knew DW was once in the one but didn’t know he ran as well as he did
I didn't know DW ever drove the #1 Pennzoil car!
Also, breaking teeth in a crash? Different times.
Park pounded the wall three separate times at nearly full speed (his throttle got stuck).
Hung throttles were becoming a bad issue in the late 90’s/early 00’s. Adam Petty’s and Kenny Irwin Jr.’s fatal crashes were caused by hung throttles.
69Charger01
It always sounded strange to me that the brand new throttle linkage could bind up like that on these cars. It is a dangerous thing at those speeds!
Kevin Tucker what was strange to me was not pushing in the clutch or down shifting and blowing it up / "which most likely wheel hops the rear axle" and spins the car out either spinning on the back stretch scrubbing off a lot of speed before backing it into the fence.
Cars Simplified it was Parks teeth not DW!
I reckon if DW stayed at DEI for a few season he would be in top 10 in point standings no doubt.
And might have squeaked out one more win. Hell, maybe it’s Darrell in front at Daytona in 2001.
"Grinning like the cheshire cat" Love that quote. "They didn't kick enough dirt on me" is a quote that deserves to be framed with a picture of DW. So inspiring.
Good to see DW's feelings pop out. He loves racing.
I never missed a race or any televised on track coverage.. Lol I cannot believe I forgot about him driving this car.
When the 12 car was behind him I knew it was over. That was Fords time 98 as well as 99 .DJ in the 88 car Mark Martin in the 6 car. It would have been nice to see Darrell win # 85.
Video recommendation
Top 10 NASCAR Cup Series Team Wins
I'll never forget DW driving the #88 in Japan subbing for DJ. I could only imagine if he went to the #28 or got in a 3rd car
I remember this and i also remember thinking they shouldve given him more time in the car.
Great vid! This is more proof that the young guns the sponsors & OEM's want aren't always the best choice.
After his spell at DEI, he finished 1998 in the joke of a scenario that was the Tabasco sponsored car that was initially run by International Sports Management (ISM), but sold to Tim Beverly to become Tyler Jet Motorsports. After two races in DW's old Chevrolets, at Indianapolis and Watkins Glen, the McLehinney company, owners of Tabasco, sued to have the team run with the Pontiacs they were promoting from the start of the year, when Todd Bodine was driving the car. This they did from Michigan all the way to Atlanta, and DW only scored one top 20 for the rest of the year and his past champion's provisional meant that he would qualify dead last in all but 2 of those final races.
In the words of S1apsho3s, "[Tabasco] wanted their star driver, results be damned. Instead, they had tapped six different guys to drive the car, four of whom actually made starts for the team, and that is the tale of the Tabasco Fiasco,"
Man I love DW. What a great driver and even better person. He was absolutely great for nascar, in the car and in the booth
D.W.'s Top 10 at Pocono in 1998 was one of his best moments in the end of his Driving career.
Wow, been hoping someone would post this some day!!! Awesome video, thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you Jeffrey, for the info on Stanton Barrett I knew he didn’t have much luck!
No pun intended but DEI should've parked Park for the rest of the 98 season and had DW coach him up while building his team for better success for the 99 season also would've been able to get a full sponsor for a 2nd car that season.
Came close to winning with that team.
So the impressive thing is the DEI cars were not very good in 1998. relative to how great they became in the 2000-2004 time frame. every new team in any series. You will struggle at first if your starting a new startup. Also they had the crap Engines. But they ironed out all the issues pretty fast compared to a lot of new ground up operations.
“Steve park recovered from injuries” poor dude was a punching bag of nascar
DW made Fox Nascar....it's not the same without him. He's legend!
Love DW man. The heart and soul of NASCAR
That was fun seeing Darrell run well in that car. It was very cool of Dale to call on him.
Lotta blood to let, peace to make, give a fuck about a check.
I learned that Kevin Lepage's stupidity is not just unique to his Talladega gaffe
Imagine what Park could have done in that car had that tire not blown at Atlanta.....the kid was unreal. Hand build the car that most of Dale Jr's Busch wins came from...."Red Headed Step-Child".
Agreed, he won Watkins Glen 2000, Rockingham 2001, and had one of DEI’s cars in the Top 10 in points over the seasons course for the first time. A lot of people forget all this, but Park did achieve all of this for the team.
@@DavidJameson89 He's the reason why my number was 1 in all of my high school sports and still in sim racing today. Much respect.
Really wanted Darrell to win that race at pocono lol. I remember watching it
I was a diehard DW fan. I'm telling ya mid nineties was painful !!! I was ecstatic watching him drive for Dale. Lol
I forgot where I read this, but I believe Dale was trying to work a deal with the Buz McCall’s #96 Caterpillar team by purchasing the equipment or something like that and DW driving for DEI with the car as Buz was trying to get out of the sport. It’s too bad that never happened.
I wasn't much a fan of Darrell when I began watching when I was young but grew to like him more by the end honestly I was the same with Dale Sr. was huge fan of whoever was in the 28 Texaco Ford all those years, but I remember I was pulling so hard for Darrell to win that race at Pocono. Also interesting is both Michael and Darrell drove with Pennzoil sponsorship in the 90s Michael with Bahari racing, later both Ward and Jeff Burton would drive with Caterpillar
Thats the happiest 2nd place in the history of nascar cause he helped a kid from home and proved to himself he can still do it.
Love the videos my dude where do you find video clips at for your videos?
I always thought Paul Andrews was the crew chief for the 1 when the team started back then.

this reminds me of Ricky Hendrick wanting Dale Jr to drive for him
Im not crying youre crying
What are talking about I was not crying I swear I got hit in the eye
Sweet video man. You gotta love Darrell
They should have let him stay
Am i the only one to recognize the music as the instrumental of The Mint by Earl Sweatshirt?
I think Dale Earnhardt planned on keeping Darrell around from what I understand that there wasn't any place to put him and no sponsor that would want him and Darrell career was abt over any how I hate to say that but it's true and dale sr was getting close to his career as well both thoses amazing drivers career I think didn't have the right ending of there Legendary career
What if Stanton Barrett drives the number 1 Pennzoil Chevrolet substitutes Steve Park crash at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1998
he would struggle
Aidan Murray oh yeah duh
Jeffery Robertson SB was a good stunt man but not much of a driver (my opinion)
Dan Coker Stanton Barrett best finish 5th 1996 Busch Light 300 at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton Georgia Busch grand national series number 49 Petro Express Chevrolet Monte Carlo borrow Jeff Gordon Equipment championship in 1995 Randy dorton engine builder Hendrick horsepower under the hood last but not least banjo chassis named after banjo Matthews
This was 2000, i was at pocono when DW drove the 1 car
This guy has a-lot of class
Steve Park was one of the drivers who had his bright career in NASCAR derailed completely by injuries. Crash that sticks hardest in my mind is the Pocono crash. The one Jr went sprinting at to make sure Steve was ok. I dont think he raced again after that, about as bad as the Jeff Green crash was.
Big ups on the Earl Sweatshirt song for this video.

@Dillon Schakleford That's a good one too.
Darrell aged like wine, now I want to hear one who aged like a juice left in the sun too long... I'd like to see one on Jeremy Mayfield. The two time Rookie of the Year turned meth-addict who got banned from NASCAR.
He wasn't banned they told him if he took the road to recovery program he could drive again and Mayfield refused to take the program
1:59, I had a certain ELO song pop in my head after seeing her.
“Evil Woman”, “Turn To Stone” or “It’s Over”? 🤣
I wish he would have won one for DEI

didn’t nemechek race the #14 burger king car as well ?
That ride height...
Darrell would stay at DEI for the 2nd car numbered 01 or 14 or 17 again.

Darrell Waltrip = Darrell Wallace Jr.?
Seriously though , compare Bubba’s Charlotte All Star Race interview to Waltrip’s Pocono interview. Not much difference. Both guys raced with their hearts on their sleeves.
What’s that weird music playing in the background? I actually kinda like it...
Dale Jr should’ve been promoted to substitute in the #1 in 1998 with Darrell Waltrip. Maybe even promote Earnhardt Jr to drive the #1 full time in 1999
