Hey Eric not a bad quote
But come up with something original
Cause that quote is pretty cringe inducing now
No disrespect
@@8-ball916 wdym cringe?? Lmao
20 years of trying, 20 years of frustration, he finally won in 1998!
Victor Uribe And 20 Years later, another one numbered as same as him wrecked another guy to win
Christopher Michael you mean 21?
1998 was THE year for me too! But for me it was more like:
"13 years of trying, 13 years of frustration...."
"tiDDies aTTic FINALLY lost his virginity!" 🤪
Mike Joy is a legend
I watched that 500 live and to this day I still get chills and teary-eyed watching it.
The fact he was able to drive that car away after flipping in 97 is still mind boggling
As only he could.
these days you get a scratch and you're going to the garage
Hooray for the crash clock
Dom Andriacchi cringe
That's how you know he was irritated
Honestly, I feel like Dale Sr could have won at least 3 Daytona 500’s, but Lady Luck has to strike....
iiColeCuster I agree, he’d have 3 or 4 if luck went his way
Hell if he had as good of luck as some drivers I have seen over the years ::cough:: Jimmie Johnson :: cough cough:: he could've rivaled Richard Petty for most Daytona 500 wins..
Even with he awful luck in the 500 he still won 34 times at Daytona between all the series and non points races, as well as the July race
goomba1982 Earnhardt said in a little known interview 2003 would probably be his final year.
Well said
He could've won 20 of 'em
If there was anyone that deserved to win it, it was him.
Rocket Man I don’t think so
He was the one who accidentally hit Earnhardt in the left rear
Plus after he died I’m pretty sure some said he got death threats
His fanbase could’ve been destroyed if he won and accidentally killed Dale while winning
@@erikcorr3261 Earnhardt came down, and Marlin was there.
@Rocket Man is a troll. Pay him no mind, folks.
@Rocket Man - I'm sure you have, boy. At the end of the day - Dale Earnhardt: 7x Winston Cup Champion, 76 career victories including a Daytona 500, and a member of the inaugural class of the NASCAR HOF. @Rocket Man: Trolled a few people on a video dedicated to Dale Earnhardt. Congratulations on your "huge" achievement in life. 🙄
See folks, what @Rocket Man is trying to do is change the conversation to show he's a big, bad honky tonk who knows about cars now. That's what happens when trolls get their clock cleaned. What you do from this point on is just ignore them like I'm about to do.
THIS is why I LOVE Dale Sr. He inspired us all to never give up! Love this man since '79 at age 10. The only race broadcasted then was the 500!
Unrivaled was good yesterday with Earnhardt and Gordon. #BlackFlagsMattersNation
Watching this after Unrivaled is rather fitting. 1997 sticks out to me the most because you know Nascar would never let someone finish with a car beat up like that, it also shows how Dale never gave up.
It didn't hurt that most of the race after that flip was run under caution. Earnhardt was able to limp home safely at that point.
@@badbooking3221 Yeah. Even back then, if he was too slow, NASCAR would have called him in to make an attempt to fix it and get back up to speed.
The 2001 Daytona 500 where he lost his life in Turn 4 was the 1st NASCAR Race I watched as he was my driver I picked out of the 1998 EA Sports PS1 Game NASCAR 99 which was my Christmas Gift from a neighbor in 2000. Worst Birthday I’ve ever had as he died 3 days after I turned 7. And believe it or not, when he finally won it 21 years ago, even though I wasn’t a NASCAR fan yet, he won it on my 4th Birthday and here were are in 2019 and I’m 25 today. February is one of my favorite times of the year because I get Daytona Speedweeks for my Birthday
The Earnhardt name has 3 Daytona 500 wins
98,04,14
51 in total at daytona for the earnhardt's at daytona all series.
@Jett Lucas Hayes why did this make me laugh
@Jett Lucas Hayes these are the types of dirty jokes that I still appreciate
13:24-13:30 never fails to give me chills watching that. People can hate on Mike Joy all they want but damn if that wasn't a beautiful and powerful call to end the race. You could tell he was thrilled to all highs Dale won, same for everyone else in the booth too.
“Earnhardt out. Up and over number 3. And for the 19th time...Lady Luck deals a bad hand.”
Dale Sr's story is what made me a fan of nascar.
more specifically, EmpLemon's video-biography on Dale Sr peaked my interest, SlapShoes sustained it, you're nursing it!
fuck I love this sport.
7:19 - the infamous “Dope” Cope statement by the legendary Ned Jarrett.
Was Derek cope known for using drugs?
@@travishagan8951 Ned Jarrett was so shocked that Earnhardt cut the tire, he said the wrong name. That had to have been a surprise to the booth considering Dale had such a dominant car that year.
Hard to believe that it took him 20 years to finally win the Daytona 500 and That was the race that got me hooked into NASCAR
I wish Dale Earnhardt Sr was alive
Rocket Man now that’s rude and stupid what you said not cool man.
@Rocket Man get a grip man, if you don't like Dale Earnhardt then don't watch videos about him. No reason at all to come here talk shit.
@Rocket Man I'm sure you can find better things to do with your life
@Rocket Man no u
@Rocket Man so your glad a legend of racing died....then allow me to give a big, hearty, FUCK YOU
You should do this video for ESPN's 30 for 30 series l. Wonderful work on this video.
Good video as always!
Without doubt, Dale Sr. is the greatest NASCAR driver of all time.
Except that would be Richard Petty...
@@deathrooster14 Both Richard Petty and Dale Sr. are great drivers.
Actually Johnson is better. 7 Championships and 83 wins in less starts then Earnhardt
@@kadens dale would likely have more wins to his name if he hadn't died, also jimmie won championships becuase the championship format made it easier to win
Actually, dale was 49. He probably wouldn’t win more, Now the Chase mad have made it ‘easier’ but he has 83 wins. Also he would have had 3 anyways 06 09 13. 2016 showed Jimmie can rise to the occasion and win get it done. Anyway you put it, Jimmie and Dale are all time greats.
This still send chills thru my body and soul seeing Dale Sr win Daytona! It never gets old!
i get chills from listening to mike joy say those words
20 YEARS OF TRYING 20 YEARS OF FRUSTRATION DALE EARNHARDT COMES TO THE CAUTION FLAG TO WIN THE DAYTONA 500!!!!!! Finally!
Another great video as always BFM
8:34 oh but it did lol. This was truly a great video Darian. Excellent work.
Mike Joy with one of the greatest calls in NASCAR history
Toyota and the 24 Hours of Le Mans is like this way too, with their '90 Daytona moment in 2016 and '98 Daytona moment in 2018.
I think that what really did it emotionally for the big man himself was the fact that people assured him, "Dale this is your year," then having it actually happen. Then the big tipping point, every crew member from every team high fives him before he did donuts on the grass before pulling into Victory Lane
Ned Jarret cheering for Dale Jarrett always gets me
Seeing every crew member on pit road lined up to congratulate him says everything about Dale, absolute legend. I was watching the 2001 race and still couldn't believe he passed away in the crash, the small track I raced at raised a #3 flag and it was there for years afterwards
I remember watching this race. So nervous watching it all unfold and finally the emotional win and celebration. A few years later i watched his last race... totally hit me hard
In the 90s, his average finish in the 500 is 6.6. That also includes in the 31st place finish in 1997 following the infamous flip. You take that out among 9 races, his average finish is almost 4th!
Good Seasons Requests:
Jeff Gordon 2007
Clint Bowyer 2012

Aric Almirola 2018
I was 4 years old when Dale Earnhardt died and I still remember what it was like when he raced. He was just the absolute best. My family, especially my dad loved him so much. I remember when he died and my dad was crying. I remember later that year when Jr. won at Daytona everybody was crying again. No matter what anybody has to say about the current state of NASCAR, back in the day if you had family that was into NASCAR it was better than any other sport. It is a family sport.
I'm not sure how someone can make this video and not include "It's the Daytona 500, I'm not supposed to win the damn thing!"
If ever people in my part of the world doubt the importance of the Daytona 500, I play them the interview Dale Earnhardt participated in immediately after climbing out of his car after winning the 1998 race. After so many years of trying, you can hear the relief and to some extent disbelief in his voice when he said:
"The Daytona 500 is ours we've won it, we've won it we've won it!"
You should also Kyle Busch VS Daytona 500 as well. He was so close to getting it last Sunday.
Maybe he can get it on his 15th try
The amount of top 5s and 10s in the daytona 500 are crazy. In my my 50s now and watching him in person and on tv was like watching a man toying with boys on restrictor plate tracks.
Say what you will about Dale Jr, but he did something his father couldn't: win TWO Daytona 500s.
Earl Sweatshirt and Dale Earnhardt , Legendary combination for a video.
Well Done
13:40. Money can buy almost anything in life. But one thing it can't buy is respect.
Since this was about Dale vs the 500, I'm surprised you didn't cover the 2001 race. He won in '98, the 500 won in '01.
When you try your best but you don't succeed
The way mike Joey called that final lap man goddam
Joy
The Earl Sweatshirt instrumental in the back is greatly appreciated
I just realized something
After winning the Daytona 500 in 1998, he died in 2001
That was 3 years later.
His number was the 3
This is kinda stupid, so feel free to hate on this comment
8:18 I love how you can see Cole Trickle’s Mellow Yellow car in the shot. If you look closely in DoT you can see Dale Sr. several times.
Need to also mention this incredible statistic: In the 1990 Daytona 500, CBS showed Earnhardt having amassed a lead as high as 28 seconds over second place. Under green. Not during pit stops. That could not happen today.
The most memorable Daytona 500.
Nice vid but could’ve done two more things here.
1. 1999-2001. Despite not winning any of the next and last 3 Daytona 500’s, The 2001 means a lot since not only he lost Dale in that race, we lost him while he was blocking for his team and for his son.
2. A bit into Dale Jr’s 500s, especially winning in 2004 which was huge and 2014 which was also huge since he got both in shorter time than Earnhardt Sr and for two different teams, one of which is the most dominant team in 500 history. Maybe 2019 since it’s the first 500 in 40 years that we don’t see an Earnhardt in. At least we’ll see Jeffery in the 300 tomorrow.
I’m only 12 and I know a lot about nascar and my dad told me about Dale Sr and then I saw the frustration he went through and I get chills every time I see a vid of Dale winning the 500
Mark Martin vs the Winston/Sprint Cup Series title. The guy finished second five times! If not for points deductions (1990), close battles that didn't go his way (2002 but 1990 too), and insane seasons from other drivers (1998), he would be a champion, multiple times over.
Dale Earnhardt never won the Daytona 500 from 1979 through 1993 era
Yet, Trevor Bayne won it on his first attempt.😂😂😂
bayne is obviously the superior driver

Tony Stewart vs. Daytona 500?
deathrooster14 Too bad he never won it as a driver, but won it as an owner
Kyle Busch vs Daytona 500?
Stewart had a lot of bad luck at Talladega and Daytona too
I love it! Crowds going near his car mid burnout, lol
Jake Umebayashi Do You Like Alex Bowman
Jeffery Robertson yes
That black car with the white 3 really brought out the "INTIMIDATOR"
A lot of people don't know that it took Buddy Baker, son of Buck Baker, 13 attempts to win just 1 D500. DW in the # 17 HMS TIDE ride Chevy Aero Monte won his 17th D500 due to a fuel gamble by Jeff Hammond and almost ran out of fuel due to extra laps under caution at the end of the race.
You're going to talk about the 1991 Daytona 500 with just the bird incident and not the crash with him, Kyle Petty, and Davey Allison in the final five laps? Or even about Dale Sr's mad dash to the front at the end of the 1995 Daytona 500 before his tires gave out on the final lap? And while I know he won it in 1998, his run in the 1999 running and his statements from 2000 are worth mentioning.
This video is a decent baseline, but there is SO MUCH more that can be talked about.
Also a 500 that we all wish that have never happened on the final lap. It would have been fun to watch Dale Jr and Dale Sr go at it at Talladega and Daytona all the time.
@Andrew Anderson He was called home by our Father in heaven. He preferred to die that way and NASCAR have went overload on safety (if they just use stock cars with metal instead of hard plastic cardboard). Drivers wouldn't have to deal with CTE and snapping their vertebrates in their backs.
Seemingly everything about Earnhardt centered on Daytona, the driver who scored more wins there than everyone else, 11 times including the 1998 Daytona 500, and would of course lose his life there in 2001. It was probably because of the magnitude of his impact on the sport and the shock wave his death created that lead to him (posthumously) being voted NASCAR's most popular driver for the only time in his career
Denny Hamlin just won his 2nd Daytona 500
Bad seasons: number 60 Xfinity car
The 1998 Daytona 500 intro still brings a tear to my eyes.
That 1990 Daytona 500 was by far the most heartbreaking. Leading all the way to the final corner when a rear tire goes flat? What are the odds? Total heartbreak. I really felt for him on that one.
Man, when Dale Earnhardt FINALLY winning the Daytona 500, the weight on his shoulders was lifted
Until Dale Sr. got the GM Goodwrench sponsorship, he had several Canary Yellow & Sky Blue cars : #8 Dodge Charger he drove for Ed Negre, The #2 Crane Cams car he won 1979 Rookie of the Year and 1980 Championship in, #15 Bud Moore Eng. Wrangler Jeans Ford, #3 RCR Wrangler Jeans Aero Monte Carlo.
In the end, the Daytona track beat him and won...
The track may have taken his life, but he still finished 1-2 as an owner in his final race.
It doesn't get said enough that he won the Daytona 500 that took his life.
You would never see an interview start with "Dale, what tge heck happened on the last lap" in 2019. Lol

There'll never be another Dale.
Rick Mast had a great view of Dale winning
Looking at how Harvick’s 2002 Daytona 500 went (until he tried to block Jeff Gordon with 50 to go), does Dale steal that race or makes the same mistake Harvick made if Dale was alive for 2002’s race?
And just 4 years after finally winning the Daytona 500, he’d lose his life on the same track.
Dale will always live on in our hearts.
3 years not 4
The bad ass dale still finished the race in 97 after the flip.
I have the 1/24 elite diecast from that race the epic crash car.
@Rocket Man diecasts are collectables, they don't get played with like the toy cars we all had as little kids

The 93 finish is so good

And the dale and dale show.
Sr was so close UGH.
I think the Daytona 500 kicked his arse on numerous occasions....some people just weren't made for that kind of pressure. Petty owned the 500....Earnhardt just couldn't handle it
Congratulations on the video! The story was very well told ...
What is the name of this background sound? I loved it!
1:56 Bad luck begins in '82? Try 1979. Had a shot to win, crew botches the last stop. 1980... had a much better chance as he was the only car that could hang with Baker but again, the last pit stop was botched.
Some of the footage of this video would've been better if it wasn't for this whole NASCAR full race issues that are going on rn
Surprised that they didn't talk about it on the podcast last Wednesday.
You should have included his come through the field run from 14th to 2nd in the closing laps of 1995, and his funny interview after the race.
Ironic that his first Daytona 500 was 2/18/79 and his last was 2/18/01

I was so furtunate to be at the 98 500 to see my all time favorite driver finally winning the 500.
The 3 car and OH! Big trouble, big wreck behind him
Even though Dale finally conquered the Daytona 500 in 1998, fate would have the last laugh three years later in 2001.
Most emotional video ever 😭😭😭
i was never much of a Dale Earnhardt fan but i was glad he finally won it in 98. He lost that race EVERY way you could lose it . blown tires, ran out of gas, wrecks, flipped over hell he even hit a damn bird what are the odds of that happening
5:45
They just threw the tires aside...didn't give a shit where they went.
"And for the 19th time Lady Luck deals a bad hand"
You’ll probably have to do one of these for Chase Elliott the way things have gone for him. Wins the pole in 2016 and wrecks out. Wins the pole and his duel in 2017 and runs out of gas with 3 or 2 to go while leading. Wins his duel in 2018 but wrecks out. Better not take him 20 years lol
1990 is the only really bad break, the other stuff is typical racing
The 1990 one is just so hard to watch
If nascar made a top unlucky moments in nascar this would be top 3
