Very interesting cooker Tom. I think it is great that Masterbuilt has some competition now... competition forces innovation... so I love it! Take care Tom.
Masterbuilt has nicer Grates. But, HANDS DOWN, the Triple lined and removable, parts replaceable Charcoal Chute, is all I needed to see to Sell me!!! Additionally, looks like all the Mods the MB needed are all ON the Char Criller and the heavier, porcelain coated Manifold and Diffuser looks better than what MB uses. Watching for the Head to Head...JJ
Do you think there is an easy way of removing the legs so I can fit one in the back of my suv? Or is a cargo trailer hitch the way to go. Thanks for your videos! I just discovered you a week ago but am a big fan
OK, so it looks like the fan blows in the heat from the charcoal, but there is no auger moving charcoal. So I guess people don't really do burgers/thin meats on these so much? When would someone get one of these vs a pellet smoker? I do like the build quality. I used to have a CG super pro grill and loved it--but you couldn't choke out your coals. If the super pro had a lid like this, better sealing aspect, I'd rank it better than a Weber kettle.
Do you think those ledges holding in the fire bricks is going to cause bridging of the charcoal? Seems to me that it would greatly increase the likely hood of it happening.
Thank goodness they didn't call it a barbecue grill because there's no such thing as a barbecue grill you got a charcoal grill and a gas grill barbecue is a style of cooking you don't go to a barbecue you go to a cookout
Great video! Changed my mind from getting the masterbuilt. But where in the heck did you find the one with the red lid? Don't want blue, lowes only can get blue. And the menards reps cannot even locate this grill in their system. Anybody know? Thanks
I like how it has that vent in the back also. You can close that insert the tube in the event that you do have a grease fire to close off the air unlike the masterbuilt...
Mr Horseman, I have enjoyed a few of your videos and learned some helpful tips sir. But I would like to give my 4 month review on this product. It was purchased in December as a Christmas gift, 4 months later the fan fried, melting itself to the fan box that is mounted directly to the fire box, taking the controller out with it. So, while waiting for char griller to send me the replacement parts from China, I installed the LSS mod. Upon learning of this, they told me that the warranty is now void. So I now have a 4 month old broken piece of Chinese made junk taking up space until I can afford to spend a couple hundred more on a decent controller. I give it zero stars and hope they get sued to the point of bankruptcy.
Thanks for watching Michael! I’m sorry you had that experience. How did they find out that you bought the LSS mod? When I put mine on they didn’t tell me it voided my warranty…..
@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ well, actually I made my own, welded it up using 1×1 angle and a piece of steel mesh. I guess they noticed it in the pics they requested. Thing is, I haven't even tried it out yet because the smoker is down. Anyway, I can remove the comment if you like. I just wanted to share my experience. Great channel btw.👍
Hey Tom, nice grill, I saw another guy use it/review it and he said you can't put wood chunks down the shute with the charcoal like the Masterbuilt, the temperature takes off and can't get it down when he did it that way. Only can put wood in the ash box.
I think you might be taking about my video. I've fixed the issue and can now use wood in the hopper. The hopper has a lot of play and was sitting to far away from the cooking chamber resulting in to much air flow. I found it by looking for leaks. I put the hopper back in and seen all the play. So I moved it as far left towards the cooking area as possible. I've not had any issues since. I'll try and make an updated video showing the issue. I was dumbfounded by his something so little could cause so much problem. I'm just glad it's fixed now cause I love the grill. Also thanks for this video and you have a new subscriber. I'm looking forward to seeing your videos to come on it.
Thanks Daniel! I appreciate you Watching and commenting! I don’t have hardly any play with mine but I’ll try moving it to the left as far as possible, not really any issues other than the top lid leaking, but I’m working thru that
So Tom, now that you've had the Char Griller for a bit, any thoughts on which one (compared with the masterbuilt 560/800/1050) would you say is a best buy?
Dang, this looks like a significant improvement over the Masterbuilt Gravity. But, my Gravity 560 still kinda works so not ready to upgrade just yet. Great review Tom. Will tune in again when you burn in and first cook. Thanks.
My wife authorized this grill or the Old Country Gravity Fed smoker. This one is so tempting. What turns me off of the Masterbuilt is it's cheap construction, and this is clearly well built. Decisions, decisions..Great video and I'll be looking for the cook reviews!
just bought a MB 1050 a few weeks ago and spent another $250 or so for some of the mods...it's working great but kind of annoyed to see what appears to be a better product at half the total cost. Oh well...hopefully my MB continues to work awesome and lasts a long time, and at the same time more and more companies get involved and make better and better competition!
Might replace my Master Built with this. I found Master Built custom service to be terrible and I’ve had temp. Control problems from day one. Thanks for a great video
This should be called fully automated offset smoker, it's no different from an offset smoker, this thing has all the bells and whistles applied to an offset smoker. Masterbuilt "gravity" 560 series goes to a full 700F degrees in 13 minutes. This Char- Griller 980 Gravity takes 20 minutes to reach 700F. 3:40 - That adjustable vent slide wasn't placed there to stop rain or snow getting in, it was placed there specifically to control the air and smoke flow going out from the food chamber. The way the vent cover was mounted with the exhaust opening facing down to the ground is already more than enough to stop any rain or snow getting in. I agree with you, Char-Griller 980 Gravity really has a nice heat destitution system in the food chamber, a lot of thought and engineering was put into it.
Ask and you shall receive.... I appreciate you responding to my message on Facebook. Can’t wait to see more reviews on this unit once you have a chance to test it out. Have you heard of any rumors of other companies coming out with a gravity fed grill? Can you imagine a Weber gravity fed kettle?
Great video Tom! I'm excited about what this unit has to offer. The build quality and material grade seems to be beyond the MB in a lot of areas. Also the engineering on that heat manifold is a game changer. No more hot spot!!
That’s a pretty cool looking grill for sure. Seems really well built and thought out as well. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how it handles. Awesome overview Tom!
Is this heirloom quality, so that my great-grandson can inherit it someday. 🤔 What's your thoughts on that exhaust option will you add a stack. I also want to watch your wife's channel see what she adds to her collection when you acquire another grill. That looks like it has many innovative features. You did a great job on the mancave. Your going to have to top Brian's vortex ribs.
Tom, thanks for doing these videos especially on new products. For someone like me who is in the market for a smoker, whether it's a pellet, gravity fed charcoal or any other, having someone like you take us all in for a deep look at these is very valuable and appreciated. If I had money to buy alot of smokers I wouldn't care as much, but when I have to make the dollars count, videos like yours are great. thanks man.
Really impressed with all the porcelain coated parts. Will be interested to see some cooks on this. I'm wondering how the barrel shape will compare to the master built shape.
Been looking at this and the MB's for a possible purchase for next year. Like you said, hopefully competition makes each company step up their game and innovation will continue . Great video Tom!
Thanks for Watching Dan! Good eyes Dan! It’s a Char Broil aluminum drip tray 3 1/2” x 7” doesn’t fit perfectly, but it’ll do until Char Griller makes one. Bought it on clearance a while back for 50 cents don’t know if they are still available
Thanks so much for this video Tom! I love this company and no one else has done a thorough overview of this grill! Thanks again and keep the grilling info coming!
I'm utterly impressed with the build quality and the way they build in tuning plates via the holes in the shield has really sold me. I've seen a few biscuit test with this smoker and it's pretty dern even.
Char-Griller is really stepping up their game... they have a well thought out offset too. There are so many new smokers and grills hitting the market these days - it's great for the consumer. Looking forward to your cook
I have been looking forward to your review of this great grill. I knew it would be just a matter of time before you got it. This is my next grill...hopefully by Memorial Day. I was hoping, too, they would offer a red top version.
Nice review Tom. Looks like they have some nice updates compared to the 560. The charcoal Shute and heat baffle were my biggest complaints about my 560.
I don’t own either but I will be buying one of them. It looks like the grate at the bottom of the charcoal chute looks to be designed better on the Char Griller
Thanks for doing this video. I really want this grill and smoker to shine. My propane grill is rusted out on one side and the bottom of my masterbuilt propane vertical cabinet smoker is starting to rust thru around the burner. I can drop another steel plate in on that to extend its life but it's time to buy. I grill two or three nights a week in the summer, grill all year long, so the pellet poopers are not quite what I want for a quick supper. I subscribed and will stay tuned. Have seen three other guys with videos on this unit, one is an admitted char griller "ambassador" so don't know how unbiased he really is. Another guy really likes it and a third put a gasket I think on the top of the charcoal hopper and is having trouble keeping his temps down. Char griller said his modification is causing his problems (according to him), so I hope your mod doesn't affect performance. I'm a little shy of buying something within a month of its release but the price on this is right and it looks heavy-duty. I look forward to more of your videos!
Yep you said what I was going to point out. He may back off on the gasket it could seal too well and throw off the temps. I’m guessing the red color is for menards only the one at my local Lowe’s is blue
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ great video by the way you answered all my questions I have been looking at this to take the place of three cookers i currently have.
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ Thanks so much! I’m wanting a gravity fed. Been looking at this an MB. I saw your MB videos. I like the cooking chamber better on the higher end MB’s. All 3 levels with plenty of room between. That’s about it. Seems like everything else is going to be better on the CG. From your exp, If you cook at 425, then want to bring it down to 225... how long does it take to brig it down on each grill? MB & CG.
Thanks for Watching and commenting Rick! The bigger the grill the faster it comes down in temp. The CG 980 would take about 5-15 minutes depending upon ambient temp and if your opening the hood. The same is tru for the larger MB
I been watching videos on this and apparently chargriller does not recommend a gasket. There is a guy that uploads videos with his defective chargriller and he had a gasket on it in the beginning and the grill kept overcompensating for it and overshooting the temps.
Mars so the guy that is having the problems was keeping temp down did a third video. I just saw it. I sure didn't watch all 40 some minutes of his temp gauge rising, but buried in one of the comments was the fact that he has finally figured out his problem. Apparently his charcoal hopper was too far to the right, away from the smoker it sounds, which was allowing air to flow into the chamber. It would be nice if Mr benfield would clearly post that he has figured out his problem instead of allowing the negative information to perpetuate. Sounds like there is some play in the unit but seriously, let people know you got it fixed.
@@jlawl3766 yep, been busy. I'm going to try and get a video up showing the play in the hopper or change the titles to show fixed. Honestly though with all the bull I had to deal with thru char griller I'm in no hurry. Just like they wasn't in any hurry to help me. With them constantly blaming me instead of helping I had to figure it out on my own. They called one time while I was at work and I'm not allowed to use a phone at work. 3 hrs later I tried calling back and left a message with no return phone call. It wasn't until I figure it out they decided to reach back with me about a week later. This is after about 15 emails with one, 5 emails with another. Facebook messages, and only getting the blame instead of help. But yes I'll try and get a video or change titles soon. Thanks
Looks like they did their homework and improved upon many of the areas seen as weaknesses of the Masterbuilt.
Yes they did! Thanks for Watching Michael!
Very interesting cooker Tom. I think it is great that Masterbuilt has some competition now... competition forces innovation... so I love it! Take care Tom.

Can't find one, chargriller says I have to buy at Lowes or Menard 's. But none of them have it.

I'm a little shy of buying something within a month of its release but the price on this is right and it looks heavy-duty. I look forward to more of your videos!
Thanks for Watching! Time will tell! I will put it through it’s paces and show it all
Yep you said what I was going to point out. He may back off on the gasket it could seal too well and throw off the temps. I’m guessing the red color is for menards only the one at my local Lowe’s is blue
Thanks for Watching! Yup, Red is the Menards color, we will see on the gasket, if the back vent is open it shouldn’t matter
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ great video by the way you answered all my questions I have been looking at this to take the place of three cookers i currently have.
Thanks again! Keep watching! I’ll give it a work out
Can you measure the distance between 1st & 2nd shelf?
Thanks for Watching Rick! 3 1/2”
Sharp looking grill
Thanks Aaron! I appreciate you Watching!
I was thinking of the Masterbuilt 800, but looking at the build quality of this I may change my mind. Looking forward to future cooks!
Thanks for watching! Yup, more to come!
I didn’t see that, thanks for sharing... I’ll keep that in mind
Thanks
That would be helpful, Thanks!
@@DanielBenfield I'd have to agree, that is pretty shoddy customer service!
We saw one at Lowe’s today. I’m very interested in it. Looks like a great grill / smoker. Can’t wait to see you’re thoughts and food tests.
Thanks for Watching Todd!
