    Just had my first stock flapper issue last night in the middle of an overnight Pork Butt. Woke up to >350 degrees and my meat probe at 205. Will be buying this!

    I wasn't overly concerned about my fan flap burning up... then I decide that for the price, it couldn't hurt (and it was probably a good idea for the longevity of my Gravity 980). I wish that there was some wire cover for the extended distance to the fan's new position.

    FYI... you can also use dielectric grease inside that plug to keep moisture out and then use the heat shrink over the plug . Excellent mod tom

    Maybe this $2 modification will work just as well as the $100 modification. I took an aluminum pie tin, cut to fit and glued it to the flap. No more distorted rubber.

    Thanks for the great video Tom. I have a question about this mod and a generic problem I have in my 980. I can’t stay on low temps like 220F. Fluctuation is not small. Sometimes it goes up to 350F or even more when I set it at 220F. I don’t have this problem on higher temps while grilling. It feels like when food chunks got flare during low and slow attempts, temp goes crazy. I think my flap curved a little too. If I change my flap and use this mod, do you think I can stay on lower temps? Or what do you suggest?

    I'm convinced Tom. Ordered a 980 yesterday. I've been cooking on a Green Mountain for a few years and I can't wait to compare them. Thanks for your help! The duct extension seems like a valuable upgrade. Do you think it's "necessary?" Any issues with ash buildup inside the new cage?

    • @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ

      Thanks for Watching! Congrats on the 980! Since I never had any flapper or fan issues, it isn’t necessary for me. Good question on ash buildup inside the cage, haven’t used it enough to tell.

    My husband’s 980 has had issues. His flapper looks good but the fan has melted not only once but twice!!!! 3rd fan ordered and he is looking into this mod. Is there something else we are missing? He is beyond frustrated with this issue. This grill is only a year old!!!

    • @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ
      @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching! Is he cleaning out the ash container before each cook? If not hot embers can fall and make there way into the fan and cause it to melt. Although I would think it would effect the flapper since it would need to go past to get to the fan

    • @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ
      @TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ  2 года назад

      Same could be said if he is putting chunks of wood in the ash hopper and it’s not cleaned out. Setting it on the elevated ash brings it closer to the flapper and fan. I’ve always cleaned mine before each new cook and haven’t had a flapper or a fan melting issue

    CG is sending me a new fan & flapper once they are back in stock. My flapper is warped and does not protect against unwanted air flow. In needs to be replaced as the grill just gets hotter and hotter with unlimited air intake. I want to add the mod.
