I completely concur with Tommy. My 980's flap was torched and I stumbled on the LSS Mod while searching for a replacement. I was constantly dealing with over-temps before I installed the mod and have not had an over-temp or an ERF since its installation. Super well made mod.
GREAT VIDEO!!!...I purchased the mod as soon as it went on sale...I even held off assembly of my 980 until I received the mod. Its better to have and not need...then to need and not have. Kudos to Luke!!!
Good point about the back draft during windy conditions. Threw some chicken wings on last weekend. 25 mph gusts was all that was needed to blow embers into the fan box. The plastic blades melted to the shroud lol. Money is tight so I made the mod myself. Doesn't have the extended baffle, but still moves the fan/flapper back 2" like the MB.👍
Great video my flap burned up and my smoker is getting hott not staying at temperature, I just purchased this mod along with a new flap hopefully it doesn’t burn up again. Thanks for making this video.

Thanks. I will eventually buy this mod. My current problem is that the door button on the hooper is not operating properly. I will address the problem first.
As a person that does a lot of plumbing and watching a lot of RUclips I combined something from work and something I saw on mad scientist BBQ channel. I got one of the very first 980's that came out and my flap burnt off on the first cook after seasoning it in so got a replacement and that also burn right off so I have some flame proof cloth good to 1000 degrees for sweating copper pipes so I cut a piece of it out and then put some small screws in the bottom as weights to make it fall back into place when the fan turns off. So no problem with it burning but was still having problems keeping it at the temperature I wanted without it going way to hot so I saw on mad scientist BBQ channel that he has ball valves on his offset smokers and he regulates his air by opening and closing the valve so I mounted a 3/4" ball valve on the bottom my the fan access door. I just leave it wide open to cook the fan still runs just fine when it needs to you can feel the air getting sucked up when the fan is on and hasn't gone over more than 10 degrees since I have modified it probably 30 cooks ago and I can go from 250 to baking something at 400 in less than 5 minutes at it will hold there all day and the other great benefit is slide the divider in close the ball valve down and I can save my fuel in the hopper because all the air is instantly gone
Good foresight on your part back in September...Luke's mods are the real deal, and I cannot get enuf of them when it comes to my Masterbuilt 1050. Thanks for another terrific video brother!!
i too installed the mod and the second shelf ext from the same guy, i suggest also replacing the flap when you do the mod. replacement flap is maybe 3 times thicker than original. me thinks char grill discovered something
I've tried putting wood in the ash pan and then in with the charcoal then both. Never noticed a difference on where you put it, only the amount of wood. So I only mix it with the charcoal and still have the original flap. Modify if you want but I still don't see it being a "design flaw" as it works fine if you use it as intended. I think the only reason people melt their flap is that they use way too much wood under there and create an actual little fire.
So, if you make the essential mods to the CG980 and the MB800 (or 1050), without regard to price, which is better? I look forward to your reply. I also note that MB offers the griddle, rotisserie, and pizza oven, and I don’t think CG offers similar accessories. Do those impact your opinion? Great job Tommy, you’re a cool dude! PS Why do you think CG didn’t design the fan on the other side of the box? Direction of the air? As is, it’s a sore thumb!
I actually had a 980 on order and canceled it because of this very thing. I ordered a old country gravity and a thermoworks with billows. I just didn't have much faith in the control for the 980 as far as longevity ether. But I'd choose the 980 over the masterbuilt. IMO.
Nice option.. but why not just replace the flap with a more heat proof material? On the MBs, as the air slide is in front of fan, I've seen a simple mod where they take another slide and drill a bunch of holes in it to run inserted.
You mentioned that windy conditions can cause a back draft into the fan itself and cause damage. This happened to me last night; the fan burned and is now not functional. I've already submitted a warranty claim but are there any solutions for preventing that kind of thing from happening?
No. You need the flap to control the twmp. Without it the pit would just run hot. What this mod does is saves the flap from burning up and it now allows you to add wood chuncks down below.
Hey Tommy, Great video great mod that flap fire was definitely a dealbreaker you got to be able to add wood so like you said this is definitely a game changer I still prefer the master build even know the 980 might be slightly better and just the same way I prefer my Silverado over your F150 even though the F150 is slightly better🙂🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸👍
That's a cool mod and makes a lot of sense. I'm curious, what's Char Griller's warranty/customer service like with regards to replacing the flap if it burns up? 😎🔥🍻
My flap burned up too and their CS was very helpful. Sent them a pic and they sent a new flap. What I did at the time, since they were b/o'd on the flap, was order a fire-resistant sheet of silicone from Amazon and cut my own flap. It is a little thicker than the factory flap and seems more robust than the original but it still allows air to freely move across it into the burn chamber. So far it hasn't burned up and my 980 is working great.
