Y'all know this is just my opinion, right? What did you think of this album? Love it? Hate it? Why? What should I review next, eh? - Видеоклипы
Kamasi killed it!
I bet you do but you like the clash's London calling? Or just punk rock in general and how come you don't review them?
Kamasithany Washingtontano
BUILT TO SPILL
theneedledrop do (GI) by the Germs!!!!!
Plz review jme's new album
Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus, Thundercat, D'Angelo, and Kamasi Washington embody music from the soul.
Don't forget about D'angelo
MrDangerousshark I mentioned him.
MrDangerousshark Ironically, I overlooked D'Angelo at first :^)
They all openly practice voo doo lol they don't even hide it. They work from the dark sides of the soul
>Kendrick Lamar
>music from the soul
o i am laffin
In a video Kamasi and his band said they all rented out a studio for thirty days and made 6 records with 120-130 songs.
Kamasi came out with 40 and used 17 of those forty to form the epic.
DAYUM!
Thats so epic
Rodger Smythe i see what you did there
I dont understand. came out with 40? you said he came out with 120-130.
@@xgum of those 130 songs, he chose 40 candidates, and then decided 17 of those to be the winners.
I miss the walking outside part from older reviews. thanks Anthony
It gets cold on the eat coast mane
***** It's May mane
Kirbin24 It's June mane

That Claire De Lune remake sold it for me. I love that piece so much.
Me: Shit, this album is almost three hours long.
My Girlfriend: Wow, he must have gotten up early to make that.
Scott Murphy she's blonde
She’s funny.
If I liked the jazzier parts of You're Dead will I enjoy this?
Jacob Frisenda lord yes you will
Jacob Frisenda yep
Jacob Frisenda You should look into hard bop in general too.
Jacob Frisenda Absolutely yes
Jacob Frisenda why don't you just listen to the album? I've never understood why people ask this question.

Phil Phish Lol, throwback!
Dylan Johnstone I Really like it
Kamasi, Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, K.dot, BBNG, Tame Impala, Thunder & Flylo are who I'll definitely listen to by the time I'm 100. :)
K.dot i saw what you did
why?
J Dilla too man
All these brilliant albums by black American musicians in the last 6 months (Kamasi Washington, Kendrick, Flying Lotus, D'Angelo stand out the most) are giving an astounding soundtrack to the renewed civil rights movement.
I'm pretty sure that most of the people involved won't have listened to FlyLo's 'You're Dead' or Washington's 'Epic', but as representations of a renewed interest and passion for American black culture, it seems as important as the jazz and soul of the sixties. Song's like 'The Charade' and 'For Free?' evoke images of protesters, marches and black pride speeches to me anyway.
That being said, I'm an outsider from all the unrest and could never truly comprehend the suffering behind it (I'm white, English), only acknowledge it and try to engage with it. However, it's interesting to me how musicians can reflect movements in society without being vocal about it (Washington's album isn't explicitly political but it harks back to times when jazz was) or, like Lamar's album where racism is one of the core lyrical themes.
Kendrick is the only one of them who has this outstanding success and popularity whilst still remaining this top quality that is expected of him. I mean his worst album was a strong 7, that’s actually incredible
@@doormantdarner7815 to be fair kamasi and flylo are both still putting out excellent music its just the nature of the music they make means that it will likely never be as popular as kendrick. i dont know if d'angelo is officially retired or not but black messiah seems like a fitting end point for his career
can't tell if Fantano is fat or buff. My eyes deceive me.
Happydayz 94 both
Bear mode. Built fat.
Dad Bod
Happydayz 94 He's a beefcake. Works out a lot, muscle under the fat kind of guy it seems.
Fuff
How about a Hiatus Kaiyote review?
Ha! You were on my instagram
Shawn Parrotte Super abum
>he hated choose your weapon
He don't like em dawg
Just got back from the Newport Jazz Festival where Kamasi performed excerpts from The Epic with his full band, sans strings and choir of course. I had never heard of him, but the set blew me away, so I bought the 3 LP box set from his merch table, got to meet him, AND got him to autograph the album. With such a great review (decent 9!!!) I can't wait to get into this album! Thanks Anthony!
Been listening to this album for seven short years because of this review alerting me to its existence. It still holds up so incredibly well and beautifully, even after all this time.
Fantastic review man, this will definitely be my album of the year, nothing can top this really.
Yeah this album rules. i feel like youve gotta listen to the full 3 hours though.
ollie aldridge i don't think so. don't the final tracks of disc 1 and 2 feel like endings to you?
Meme
theneedledrop I guess its more because the songs are under the same album title that makes me feel obliged to listen to the whole thing. I can totally see where you are coming from though.
Jazz is gonna make a crazy comeback because of this
Shavuel Wale We can only hope...
I got to see this entire album performed last night, and it was the most transcendental concert experience I've ever had the pleasure of going to
Videos like this are the reason Ive been watching this channel since 2010. Thanks Fanblambo.
The Piano Solo by Cameron Graves on Magnificent 7 is just absolutely mind blowing! Should have been pointed out in the review! In addition to Kamasi being flat out amazing? How about the drumming of Ronald Bruner Jr & Tony Austin throughout also!
Anthony, review Mark Rippetoes Starting Strength.
Lightniiing88 That would be awesome. Anthony please review things that aren't music.
+GOMAD?
Lightniiing88 Probably gonna have to wait for Classics Week for that one.
Lightniiing88 STRONG 10 SCOOPS C'MON
Lightniiing88 Strong 3x5
Great Review!!!! You digested and regurgitated it so appropriately! Well played my friend... well played!
I so glad to see you reviewing stuff like this!! Thank you for appealing to us jazzers out there!
I only listen to the finest of Norwegian pan flute black metal. Will I like this?
Yes
wow you were outside
I have become obsessed with this album love the melodies. I would have never heard about this album if it wasn't for the review. I am a jazz fan but rarely get into modern stuff I am out of the loop.
Your editing cracks me up. Other than that, can't wait to listen to it.
I loved the opening tracks to this massive release. I look forward to digging further into this record.
Thank you for reviewing this amazing album. Hopefully this will help get it the exposure it deserves.
That mini-review though, Fantano, you killed it!
Great mini review and long review for this loooooong album. "The Epic" is indeed a perfect title for the album.
Review suggestions:
Sprinter by *Torres*
Dark Bird Is Home by *The Tallest Man On Earth*
Thanks for showing me this exists, will be getting it soon. The previews sound awesome
Thanks Anthony. After this review I decided to buy a vinyl version of this marvellous record.
ANTHONY YOUR VIDS ARE GETTING BETTER WTF!!?!?!?!?
If anyone loves the orchestrated side of this album and wants to look into other similar jazz albums, I would suggest Charles Mingus's - Let my Children Hear Music. Its pretty fantastic, maybe a little less refined in song structure and harmony however it is from the 1970's so you can't expect the same compositional styles.
I doubt you'll read this, Anthony, but an incredible band called Spectres recently released their incredible debut, Dying. I was wondering if you'd heard it. If not, definitely give it a listen. It's a bit like Swans but louder.
This is easily a 10. You just couldn't give two 10s in one year.
Shane B in his end of the year list he had this album as number 3 so technically following that logic, he would have to give 3 10s this year to make this a 10 not just two. Because it wouldn't make sense to give the number 2 spot a 9 and have #3 be a 10
Update: he did
@@rashotcake6945 or he could just put this album above the death grips album? Bruh
comment aging status: *poor*
He just gave 2 10s in a month
Hey Mr. Fantano,
Since you really liked this album you should consider checking out some other jazz albums of today. I'd really love to hear what you think of Kris Bowers' album "Heroes + Misfits." I know you're really busy but it would be interesting to hear your opinions on where jazz is going today and what you would think of a jazz album with a different flavor.
Thanks for all the reviews man, you've introduced me to some really great music.
This is a beautiful album, and I never would have heard of it if not for this channel. Anthony spreading the word of good music.
And yes I did listen to the full 3hrs all the way through.
the rhythm changes will always be one of my all time favorites
I bought this album seconds after watching this review the first time and I loved it!are there any other contemporary jazz albums that you can recommend?
rick classik One artist that isnt mentioned at all in this comment section is Bill Laurance. His solo stuff is pure art. It has many similarities to Kamasi, and many, many differences as well. My favorite album by him is Flint. Check him OUT!
I've learned very well to pretty much always trust Brainfeeder and Flying Lotus' taste in jazz. Very beautiful work!
This album is amazing! A big inspiration...the whole Brainfeeder collective in general. Thank you for reviewing this. I am a big fan of your reviews and really appreciate your eclectic taste.
I have a jazz/electronic harmonica recording coming out called ALGIEDI that was also inspired by all of that and I have the feeling that you would enjoy listening and reviewing it. Let me know what you think about that.
I look froward to hearing from you.
Best wishes from Cologne,
Konstantin
Super keen to check this album out after I finish the new Hiatus Kaiyote album, lot to digest in both of these it seems. You should definitely review that next!
Saw opening show of tour in Seattle tonight and it was stellar. The Rhythm Changes was ridiculous, it made me cry in public.
Dear Zanbony Patrato, what do your recommend. Should we watch your review of an album and then hear it for ourselves, or viceversa?
The mini review is a nice touch.
Fantastic, I loved this album. I really hope it goes big. The fact that so much incredible music is jammed into one album is astounding. Not a single track felt like filler to me (As many albums of this length succumb to)
I was wondering what you thought of Wadada Leo Smith's Ten Freedom Summers from 2012 if you've given that a listen? It seemed like a different way to approach an extremely long jazz suite than this one. The Epic was amazing thanks for the great review!
Just been listening to the first disc of this, thinking how the choir gives it a very 70's easy listening vibe, kind of like Stevie Wonder, then I got to the last track, The Rythmn Is Changing, which is really a reworking of He's Misstra Know-It-All from Innervisions.
That Clair De Lune cover is one of my favourite jazz pieces of all time. Just a beautiful performed piece that instant relaxes me.
I had what some could consider a religious experience while listening to this music. Tears were shed. This album is solid gold.
Same bro. I hadn’t planned on listening to it all in one go. I was tired, well passed my bedtime (had to get up early next day) but I just couldn’t to stop listening. It was an intense experience
Never thought I'd find myself enjoying a jazz record as much as I did this one; let alone a freakin' 3-hour one!
Perhaps I finally got into it. Time to revisit the old guard!
Finally got around too it! 2020 quarantine silver lining!
many suspicions of mine confirmed
This is my first step into this genre, where else do i go from here?
Who did the first “Chair de Lune”... Kamasi’s is all i get in search bar
I just type in the name of your channel and put jazz behind it and bam!
Great Jazz! Thanks!
You won me back with the mini-review :)
Awesome review, Fantano.
Reviews for Mumford & Sons - Wilder Mind or Scallops Hotel - Plain Speaking upcoming?
Just listened to the preview, and holy cow this sounds amazing.
you brought back the tree. This makes me so flippin happy.
I love long albums, as long as I'm enjoying every single track. I was listening to Boards Of Canada's most recent album, Tomorrow's Harvest, which is 17 songs, but it felt like I had to trudge through it. I still haven't finished it.
Great review, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the new Hiatus Kaiyote record!
Great review as usual. I hope you're going to review hiatus kaiyotes new Choose Your Weapon record
Beautiful record. Just beautiful in every aspect. Pure artistic and musical genius with every note. Thank you so much for introducing this record in 2015.
chill out
k
Took my 3 days to finish this Album, but it was worth it!
The mini review is the best.
Love your stuff Anthony, just want to say we want more jazz! Tigran Hamasyan! Christian Scott! Kneebody!
I am going to create a graph that charts the length of your reviews and the scores that you give to the albums of those said reviews. I will do a least squares fit of a square root equation and come up with an equation to predict the score you will give an album based on the length of the review. glorious.
nailed it with that mini review
Aaaand bought! Don't usually buy jazz, but still love the genre. Love long albums, good to hear it delivered.
Welcome back, tree!
I always learn a new word or two from watching his videos. Today, I learned the word ' Cacophonous'...I'm gonna start using that.
Magnificent 7 is one of the best pieces of jazz I have ever heard. The playing is fucking unbelievable and the feel is too dope.
And here we have the long waited return of Anthony and his love of trees, how I missed it, also, gonna go and get myself the album.
This track Re Run Home is v good. Tanks for the review. Oh and Built to Spill, when?
I missed it when Anthony went outside. do that more often, it's funny!
Honestly changed the way I listen to/think about/produce music. Such great music,.
I heard ‘Changing the guard’ on BBC 6music, Stuart Maconies Freak Zone, many years ago. I fell in love with it, so I bought the album. Discovered more on Tidal and Qobuz
Anthony was wanting a reason to go outside lol
so excited to listen to this
cool you liked it, i thought it was honestly a 10. my favorite album this year after the powers that b, and TPAB. so much good music this year.
This album is sooo good. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
thank you for this review. best album of the year's first 5 months
Creationist Cat is beyond adorable.
You should review the new Torres, Low Cut Connie, Hop Along, My Morning Jacket, and/or Mumford and Sons albums.
So if I like flying lotus this is in my lane?
Get Toxic yes
Maybe
Get Toxic If you liked 'You're Dead', then you will probably like this
Ritvik Miglani Freakin' loved "You're Dead", so this deserves my listen.
foxking39 CAN YOU REPEAT THE QUESTION?
one of the best albums ive ever heard; up there with kendrick & sufjan for my AOTY
I'm curious which Sufjan album?
@@gotf prolly carrie and lowell
Moral Ambiguo 2 years later I just realized how stupid my question was. I might not have understood what AOTY stood for back then. 😓
Just saw them live yesterday in CT. Parents drove me down from NY because they are sold out there. Unbelievable performance. Amazing.
you should review Native Construct - Quiet World. Its something you don't want to miss. pls
you should make mini reviews for every album
Thank you thankyou thank you. Love it. Gonna be on my turntable lots.
why did you stop mini reviewing
i love it LMAO
And So I Watch You From Afar!
Well listend all 3 cd on one go and i did thst because after 1 cd i had this feeling that i needed more so great work
Haven't listened to the album in its entirety yet, but what I've listened to so far is fantastic and amazing.
max96920 Also, I thought this was gonna be the album which would dethrone To Pimp a Butterfly as Anthony's AOTY.
Anthony you considering doing any Dylan for this year's classic week?
I love this album, really lives up to the name "The Epic"
You Give Yung Lean's "Unknown Death 2002" A Bread/10 But This A 9 ? Unbelievable
A bread might be more than 9. Just sayin'
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Can I ask what the fuck a bread out of 10 is
Most ignorant statement of 2015? Uh-huh
Downloaded this immediately after seeing Brainfeeder, Jazz, and 9/10. Thanks b
I'm only on track two and shits giving me the feels.
i wish you gave it a strong 9 i mean come on ! but this review was good for a 3 hour album, it is kind of hard to notice and pic everything out from the music, there is just mass amounts of music in it ! But i wish you could split the review into 2 parts so we can go more into detail, even better if you did it in 3 :-) Love ya keep going !
