The Freedom Tower had no damage in the trailer to avoid references to 9/11. And in the first two missions set in New York, Black Tuesday and Hunter Killer, and a multiplayer map the Freedom tower was modified to have a square shape and 2 antennas to try and disconnect similarities to the real thing
I remember in Driver Parallel Line, you could see the towers before going to prison (game was based in 1980 i believe?), and once you get out of prison, the towers were gone.
Because it was so heart breaking, thousands and thousands of people died. So games and movies released around that time edited the towers out because It was such a touchy subject. I was watching the Simpsons the other day and it had the Twin Towers in it and it still shook me, even though it happened years ago.
