  • Disney have released yet another terrible Live Action Remake to one of their classic Disney animated movie's, The Little Mermaid.
Additionally the Live Action remake stars Halle Bailey who plays Ariel which has opened the movie up to controversy surrounding the race bent casting. But that is the least of this film's problems.
In this video we are going to analytically compare the classic animated The Little Mermaid to the Live Action Remake, and see what makes the two films different.

I grew up with the 1989 animated classic, 2002 kid here.
I want to say, the 1989 animated version won in terms of color palette, there's always enough color contrast to let you see what you're supposed to see.
And the animated classic won in terms of portraying the characters.
Eric, while being more subtle in terms of his character, did have good qualities that many people missed and the similarities, differences of his character that are different from Ariel which are important to the love story.
We're first introduced to Prince Eric on a ship of all places, the entrance isn't what people would expect from a prince, this first entrance established Eric's interest in the ocean, his adventurous personality, and the down to earth quality seen by how he's helping around the ship with the sailors and being interested in the sailors' tales about the nautical myths of merfolk.
Later, we see Eric perform music for his own pleasure and self expression on the ship, the use of music for Eric is the way that Ariel preferred to go about her singing and musical abilities.
Eric, being the prince of the land and the future king in 3 years, is a romantic who longs for emotional connection and true love, talking about how he'll just know it when he finds his true love, rejecting princesses that he didn't feel the emotional connection to.
When the storm hits and being saved by Ariel, Eric is left with one idea of his true love: a voice. With the voice and its melody being the clue to identifying his true love, Eric searched around the kingdom, often coming back to the beach, repeating the cycle for weeks until he finally met Ariel.
Without the single piece of information to know if Ariel was the one who saved him, Eric still took Ariel in and took care of her, this act showed that Eric is a kind and compassionate person.
When Grimsby pushes Eric to spend time with Ariel, the response from Eric is "If she's interested." and then he proceeds to ask Ariel to join him on a tour around the kingdom, meaning that he cares about Ariel's autonomy and respects Ariel as a person.
When Eric actually fell for Ariel, he threw away the flute that he's been playing the song in his head for days and turned towards Ariel, symbolizing that he's ready to give up the mere idea of his dream girl and have the real girl that had made him laugh and made him happy, a girl that he actually knows and actually likes, without even knowing that the girl he likes at this point is the same as his dream girl.
Eric going back to the ship just to save his dog showed that he cared more about the wellbeing of his loved ones than his own, the selfless character is also one of the reasons why he's so lovable.
The experiences of Eric are what drawn Ariel to him, although Eric is being tied down by certain expectations, he has much more freedom in terms of expressing himself and enjoying what he loves, unlike Ariel, who has to sneak around just so she can do what she loves.
On Ariel's part, the accusations really didn't add up either.
Part of Your World was supposed to be Part of That World, in the song, Ariel expressed her desire to run, dance, walk, take a stroll. She added that she wanted to know what fire is, what burning is, she wanted to be around humans, ask humans questions to learn more. After Ariel met Eric, Eric became part of the dream that she had, now she wanted to do those things with Eric as her partner. I don't know what part of this "I want" song is so hard to understand that they think Ariel become human just for Eric.
Before Ariel went to see Ursula, she's aware that Ursula was bad news and she shouldn't trust Ursula, when Ursula proposed the deal to Ariel, Ariel expressed concerns about her family, showing that as much as she wanted to be human, she still cared about her family. When Ursula went on to say that she wanted Ariel's voice, Ariel questioned about how she will be able to communicate to Eric without her voice, only to be cut off by Ursula before she finished that thought.
Ariel isn't the typical damsel in distress, she's the heroine of the story while Eric is the hero of the story, after Ariel saved Eric from drowning, Eric saved Ariel by distracting Ursula to free her, and then Ariel saved Eric again by making Ursula missing the mark with the trident, Eric saved Ariel by actually facing Ursula in the sea monster form and killed Ursula, saving Ariel and the entire underwater kingdom.
In the animated version, Ariel made all of those decisions herself, no one told her to love the human world but she loved it anyway, she made the decision to go to Ursula, she's chasing after Eric to try to get Eric to fall in love with her. Eric is also active in terms of going after Ariel. Eric and Ariel is the example of a balanced couple who are willing to fight for each other, but the remake version took that away.

My biggest gripe was in part of your world. Near the end where the line goes "wish I could be". In the original it was so melancholic you feel Ariel's emotions and mind set. Awesome video as always Eric. 🧜‍♀️📼
As a 90s kid, The Little Mermaid was one of those films from my childhood that I enjoyed watching on VHS. It is one of my Mom's favorite movies back in the day. She was 25 years old when this film was released in 1989. My older brother & I would watch this with my Mom countless of times. I often refer to The Little Mermaid as "The Movie That Saved Disney" because it began the now iconic Renaissance Era from 1989 to 1999.
As far as the Remake is concerned, I am not surprised to find out that it sucks just like the rest of the Disney Remakes. Even if they had an actual redhead who can sing, it still wouldn't have saved this film because it was a bad idea from the start. Speaking of the so called "RACE CONTROVERSY" let's be honest with ourselves. The only people who believe that nonsense are Left Wing Conspiracy Theorists. They are just upset because they cannot take any kind of criticism about Disney. These folks don't want to admit that Disney isn't the same as it once was. Based on the box office numbers of recent Disney movies, we are witnessing the new Dark Age of Disney.
Unless Disney changes direction in how they approach their films in the future, they will continue to go downhill year after year & they will have no one to blame but themselves.

I mean when Animation cost so much you don´t prioretize to make sure every little detail is spelled out for us. Some suggested that during the time period TLM takes place it was only common to know how to write your own name. A plot hole indeed they've fixed (only to make those "Cinima Sin" nitpicking morons happy LOL). All I'm gonna say is that, every movie has plot holes (even Star Wars) and the narrative in the original was more fairytale like and traditional meaning logic takes a backseat while focus is on the simplicity and the emotion (like Snow White). But, they were also moving into the future due to making Ariel an active character and making her feel more like a modern real teenager which backfires because we know a realistic person in the real world would never do something this illogical and unrealistic like "reading the contract before you sign" and "writing notes to someone to explain your situation". So, we are looking at The Little Mermaid through a modern lense despite its narrative being more simple and emotional but less logical. It's kinda critizing Snow White for its illogical fairytale moments (like falling in love instantly, taking apples from strangers, going into someone's house without thinking, or kissing without consent, or a random prince coming out of nowhere when you wished to be with a prince). Yes. This stuff makes no sense. But, the focus is on the simplicity and emotion. While a modern narrative is more focused on logic (like Frozen). So, Ariel is an active character and feels like a real teenager, but she does a bunch nonsensical stupid things like what you expect in a traditional fairytale because the crew took elements from the past Disney films (like Snow White) while evolving into the modern age (like what we have with Frozen and Beauty and the Beast).

You know, the critisim people have been giving the 1989 Little Mermaid over the years (with the main reason that Ariel is a badly written, passive, unlikable, and 1 dimentional damsel in distress who just wants a man and waits for that man to rescue her with no character arc) has driven me crazy over the years and it made me question myself if I've been loving Ariel for the wrong reasons all because I thought she was far from your typical damsel in distress who's weak and helpless (through playing Kingdom Hearts where Ariel was a badass party member during a time when I looked down at the Disney Princesses as girly damsels and sissies who just wait to be rescued). She faced off with a shark, destroyed Ursula's eels in the climax, and saved Eric 2 times (from drowning and from Ursula in the climax). But, people claim it's not good enough because Ariel had to be saved in the end from Ursula because it's her story and Ariel is the protagonist.
And when I heard about the live action Little Mermaid remake being made, as well as when the writers revealed that Ariel is going to have more female empowerment than the animated version, I was concerned about the original film's fate due to the hatred over the years. The cast and crew were boasting how the remake is superior while the original is problematic and how Ariel is a badly written character who just left the ocean for a boy, which gave me a sense that the original film (and Ariel) would be toast and fade away into obscurity like Song of the South and get replaced by the 2023 version.
But, based on how it was executed when the remake came out, boy was I wrong. And I went into this frenzy that The Little Mermaid 1989 film is a bad movie and how I was questioning myself as an Ariel fan and how the remake is going to replace the original all because of how the critisim the original film (and Ariel) has been having over the years has been driving me insane and that Ariel is a badly written, passive, and unlikable character and I've been loving her for the wrong reasons all because of a video game called Kingdom Hearts and how I was exposed to it during a time when I looked down at princess characters as weak, sissy, girly, and helpless damsels who just wait to be rescued. I knew that Ariel was going to defeat Ursula in the remake and I thought that this was going to be the remake's secret weapon because of how it's a response to the critisim of Ariel being a typical damsel in distress who puts everyone in danger and relies on others to fix the problems she created without learning anything in the end. I thought that "secret weapon" was going to make people love the remake more than the original while the original film fades away into obscurity (like Song of the South). But, nope. I was wrong. What we got, in terms of making Ariel "a strong and independent girl boss" in the remake, was something that's forced, unnecicary, nonsensical, and gives Prince Eric (despite him being more fleshed out) and other supporting characters little to do in the story making them useless.
Me being infuriated with the critisim is not just because The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite Disney films and that Ariel is one of my all time favorite characters. It's because it started the Disney Renesance (1989-1999) and yet because of how "Ariel is a badly written, passive, and unlikable protagonist", people like to trash the original and dismiss it as a bad movie which has been making my blood boil for years until I reached my breaking point where I ended up believing that the "mixed and divisive" opinions on Ariel leaned toward the negative side than on the positive side (like Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker or The Amazing Spider-Man 2) making me beleive that Ariel is "a badly written, passive, and unlikable character" and that the 1989 Little Mermaid is "outdated, problematic, poorly aged, worthless and useless."

You are not alone, my friend. I always thought that people gave this movie a hard time. Take it from someone whose mother is a fan of the film. So much so that my brother and I promise her that whichever of us has a daughter, we would name her Ariel. I have seen The Little Mermaid, so many times that I know it like the back of my hand.
The biggest lie about TLM is that Ariel left the ocean for a man. That is 1000% incorrect. Part Of Your World is a song about her wanting to know about the land above. She didn't even meet Eric until after the song. All he did was give her another reason to go to the human world above. She is one of the better Disney princesses, in my opinion. It is just the cool thing to do to hate her because the Internet says so.
My advice is this: Do not let what others say get to you. It is OK for us to love this film. 😊🧜🏻‍♀️

@@lancethefilmguy9392 Thanks, Lance. Despite the remake being a critical and box office disappointment, it's still not easy to get passed that hatred people give this movie because I was forced to go through more than 10 years of people giving this movie critisim and hatred. But, I try to remind myself "remember how the the remake tried to fix the original's problems" and "you can't please everybody" and "f@%$ them all."
However, I still have a few questions.
Is Ariel another typical damsel in distress because she had to be saved in the end despite her saving Flounder from a shark, killing Flotsem and Jetsem, and Eric (twice)? So, am I loving her for the wrong reasons?
Is "Ariel not learning anything" worth getting angry over and dismissing her as "badly written"? I've realized that the reason why people (for the most part) didn't bring up that critisim is when the remake was released, people brought up that Ariel didn't need to change or learn a valuable lesson because she wants to go to the surface. But, her need is to stay underwater because according to Triton and Sabastion "Humans are evil." Yet, in the end, Ariel was proven right and Triton was mistaken. The surface is where she belongs and not all humans are bad. But.......Ariel still struck a selfish deal with Ursula and put everyone in danger. We all make mistakes. It happens to everyone. But, it's essential that you learn and grow from your mistakes. This is a critisim that has been around since the 2000s. But, for the most part, when the remake was released, people didn't bring it up despite the critisim being brought up in the past. So, is it worth getting angry over? Who have I been listening to the whole time? Was it from liberals and feminists? Or was it from a bunch of heartless a#+holes?

Same for other people from then to now! And now they treat them like they should be in a world of feminists! Disney, Sony and Universal are failing these days, as well as WB! When can we expect The Flash Review Video?

I'm giving here two thoughts: "Maleficent" broke my heart as Sleeping Beauty was my favorite Disney movie, and even the live action Cinderella version was breaking my heart because I do not only care for the main characters, and I feel so bad what they did with the Grand Duke and also the jolly old king. I started to see them as entirely new fairy tale movie adaptions, only using snippet ideas from the animated classics.
My second remark is: The Little Mermaid has a huge potential of feminism. "Bright young women....ready to stand...",and also the original tale (Andersen!) includes the detail that the mermaid wears male clothes and is horseback riding with the prince, and in some movie adaptions, we see this, there*'s even one movie in which the mermaid is sword fighting with the prince....so....please consider this ...

I really agree with all you said. Especially regarding prince Eric. By trying to give his character more depth they actually ruined his character (and I'm sorry but I also think the actor wasn't a good fit for him). The only thing I liked about him is that he would collect stuff from all places and also from what he found in the sea, making a nice parallel with Ariel. But they didn't need to make his mother forbid him to travel. Overall I found this plot-point of him being adopted very, very unnecessary. And I'll never forgive disney for taking his moment in defeating Ursula. The way they concluded it doesn't make any sense at all. Plus it sends the wrong message by making Ariel do everything herself and not asking for help.
Another detail which is barely noticed but I found very memorable (and not in a good sense) is that in the live action movie it's not Flounder who brings in the statue of Eric (which he didn't even like - another detail that gets lost here) but Ariel herself? if they didn't want it to make it seem like Ariel is obsessed with a human with did they make her act like some crazy fan? Of course there was the question of how Flounder brought it into her hide-out but it could have easily been resolved by adding some dolphine friends helped him. It bothered me so much they made Ariel do it. Yes, she collects all the stuff but... I don't know (and I know in the original she is simping over the statue but it was still Flounder who brought it in). Maybe I'm beeing too nit-picky here.
It's really like you said... This live action remake also made me appreciate the animated version even more.

Ariel in the 1989 version didn’t give up her voice for a man she sang the iconic song “Part Of Your World” before she met Eric. Eric saved Ariel by killing Ursula with the bow of his ship which proves Triton wrong about all humans. The original is colorful. Not because Jonah Hauer-King is good at singing (god they really did make the strongest effort to make Eric look as a bad as possible in this remake didn’t they) it’s because the song is well made, and as a guy who enjoys singing, having more baritone songs from Disney is great since we don’t have that many of those from Disney.

This is the review I've been waiting for ❤ ... Great Video as always,I don't have to say anything about how I feel about the remake ... You said it all for me .The Hans Christian Andersen story is subjectively superior to the '89 film , but the only good thing the remake did is making me appreciate the animated version ... The '89 film has its short comings, but as a whole it's a very good film .The remake sucks through and through ... Also,I found Heilly's singing very odd ... Part of your World is supposed to be introspective, quiet ( and as Howard Ashman said to Judy during the recording process ) a bit breathy ... Heilly belted the sh*t out of everything, and overall her performance wasn't great ... They had the absolute audacity to remove Vanessa's song ( replaced it with :🎵LadaaaaDiDaDadadaaDiDuDiDadyudoDaDaDaUuudU....!?!?! 🎶 ) , every single character had way less personality ... They made Ursula pathetic and pitiful ,the scene of Vanessa appearing for the first time was waaaaaaay creepier in the original film, the costumes and sets were bland ... You also forgot to mention that at the ending the Queen mother tells Eric " Forget about her,our two worlds weren't ment to be together ... " , IN THE VERY NEXT SCENE , Ariel pops out of nowhere and the mother is like : ☺️ ( like WTF was that ) ... It took the original less than a minute for scuttle to tell Ariel that Eric gets married,it took the remake 2 GODAMN MINUTES to establish the exact same point !? ... This movie doesn't offend me as much as Cinderella ( which, while one of the least bad , It's filled to the brim with narrative and character issues ) since I never really cared about the '89 Film ( The book Is way better 😁😂 ) ,but I do feel sorry for the fans of the original animated film 🎥 ... Snow White though, which comes out next year will be THE BIGGEST INSULT TO WALT DISNEY'S LEGACY ... SMH 😒 🙄 Can Didney DIE already ... ?

They should have just made a new movie/story. If they would have understood the original story they would have understood that romance was not the entire reason she wanted to be human. She became human for two reasons, for love, and in order to gain a human sole she must have the prince fall in love with her and marry her.

Hey Eric. Even if Kraven the Hunter isn’t a good movie, at least Sony now has the balls to make their comic book films rated R! 🤞Morbius flopping 2 times in row has taught them some lessons. For all we know, Kraven might be good if not great. Sony’s unpredictable in terms of quality. They could surprise us. I’m optimistic, but not getting my hopes up either.

It was pretty obvious that the original was going to win. I'm sick of these remakes and the worst part this remake has the single worst song in all of Disney. Other bad songs that were from Disney which weren't many I could tolerate. But Skuttles song in this remake was so annoying that I literally wanted to rip my ears off so I won't have to hear that song, and no Disney movie has ever made me feel that way.

One of the questionable things about the little mermaid remake is, why does king triton have diverse, different race, daughters either king triton adopted all of them or he had a relationship with multiple mermaids because there’s no way they all came from the same mother or Disney’s not being realistic and people say the original was problematic

    • @EricCarter12

  • @sofi4495
    @sofi4495 7 месяцев назад

Your criticism is valid and I agree, but the main problem is that whatever they would have wanted to add or substract from the original, you can't keep everyone happy. If they had not added the musical numbers or the little extra development, people would have complained about lack of creativity. If they had done a full reversion, people would have criticized how it doesn't relate to the original. If they had copied piece by piece the original movie, people would have just complained about the live action existing. The problem to me is to choose to make a live action. It's a tough task, hard to get it right. You can tell they feared success and didn't polish the movie just enough to make it honor the animated film. But you just know before you watch them, you have to have no standard and enjoy it as a regular film

Honesty film makers if they ever plan to remake classic Disney movies they need to take a good long look at 101 Dalmatians (1996) or 2016’s The Jungle book to see how a Remake should be done.
