    I purchased Nielsen slugs here in the U.S. and am happy with how they preformed. Diameter is.178 in either 12.5 or 15.0 grains, being pushed @ 900 fps and 850 will group 5/8” and 1” @ 60 yards. I’m thinking this is pretty impressive out of a $199 pcp . The pellet and slug topic is quite interesting vs fps, have had good luck with JSB 10.34 and 13.43 as well as H&N and Crosman if you keep them under 900 fps . The heavier the slug max your power. Thanks for the info you post on RUclips 👍🏻

    Its good to always push the envelope. For years ive always understood that 16ftlbs is the sweet spot for .177 tech moves on and those FX barrels are fantastic at stabilising pellets

    Thanks for the video, fickle things these .177's at speed. You confirmed my thoughts on the beasts👍. My anschutz barrel on the rapid only likes 10.5 prems, which were good until the quality went to rats sometime ago. I'm getting my rapid converted to smooth twist next week, should be interesting.

    Great analysis, have to say you had overloaded the hammer as your 5 - max speeds were minimal and wider groups suggesting the hammer its maxed so you're pushing out too much air. With the impact its not as common due to the massive adjustability, possibly bringing the valve stop back a bit might have made it all smoother. The speeds, in general, are rather low as 880-920 is usually the bracket for JSB in most barrels and also calibers.🤔

    • @AimSmall
      @AimSmall  3 года назад +2

      I had to max out the hammer pring to get the velocity up with the reg pressure, after the video I tuned the hammerspring down but the speeds fell away quickly, the gun was sounding sick on power 5 and max, I knew I was pushing her hard but I had to get the speeds, just doesn't make sense to shoot a 177 at a reg pressure of 150bar. I tuned her down to 50 bar and loosened the hammer spring and still got 900fps with 10gr... thus there is a lot of air wasted trying to push for speed. I have spoken to a few FX experts but they have no experience with 177, all their knowledge are with the 22. I am doing one final run with the 177, if I don't see the results I am aiming for... still have a 22 barrel kit I can use. Pity as a spend mega bucks on the 177 setup.

      @@AimSmall prob with the fx guys in SA is that they mainly work on .22. As I said in my first post the main prob is the port size which is identical for sub and +12. Thus really not designed to go much past the expected 900 for a pellet. Huma air do a .177 high flow port which I suspect will help a lot as you have actually hit the max airflow capacity and increasing the pressure will have no effect. This is one of the ways they castrate the sub12, the TP for a .22 is smaller that for a .177 so no matter how much the reg goes up you can’t get the power to go up. If you want to test the potential properly fit a high flow port or just work on the theory it’s a flat shooting close range/barn pellet gun and run JSB hades Which are the same as heavies and it will run perfectly at 18-20 ftlb and put the .22 barrel on for the long range/outdoor work. Power is often overrated it the accuracy that counts

    According to Ernest Rowe, every time you change barrel length and/or pellet weight then:
    1. Set the regulator pressure to 100
    2. Put the power dial on MAX
    3. Increase HST until velocity stops increasing.
    4. Decrease HST until velocity starts decreasing.
    After, if you don't have the velocity you need then you increase the regulator pressure by 5 Bar and repeat steps 1 to 4 above. You keep doing that until you get the velocity you need.
    This way you dont end up wasting air, get more shots and ultimately the velocity you wanted. Accuracy also improves because you are only hitting the valve by the minimum amount needed. Over hitting the valve will only end up messing with the barrels harmonics.

    Isn't part of the issue with increasing spread that diabolo style pellets just aren't made for transonic speeds? At least in my experience when I push diabolos over 270m/s accuracy goes out the window quick, and insulated glass isn't cheap.
    I shoot a bit of a frankenstein buks in 100m competition, running an 880mm barrel, the longest allowed by the rules and I only use slugs to do so. Twist is about 300mm on that barrel and the slugs are perfectly stable at 330m/s. Slugs like fast twist and don't care as much about transonic speeds.
    For the 25m indoor competition, slugs aren't allowed. The pellet has to be diabolo shaped. I run a 560mm barrel with a 650mm twist. And speeds are way down to about 210m/s. I tried using the 880mm barrel, but the twist rate and speeds are just too high for diabolo pellets.

    • @AimSmall
      @AimSmall  2 года назад

      100% correct, pushing pellets beyond 290m/s and all stability flies out the window, the test in barrel was about speeds, so if you increase speed with barrel length you need less pressure on the reg, making the gun more air efficient and the parts work lighter. The modern slugs love speeds above 300m/s. Happy shooting.

Even with your wheel and valve the same.. springs will probably be different ... there's a sweet spot for everything. That tiny little extra air out the end just makes that pellet or slug distort. For different pellets, not touching those adjustments, and using different pellets ect. With a little change on those adjustments would make that pellet fly the same speed and twice as accurate
