The noise is coming from your balance shafts the 2.7 has two vibration dampening shafts almost look like a cams that rotate opposite of your motor rotating mass I personally just had this happen to a new motor with less then 3000 miles on it. Sounded the exact same
My 2001 2.7l did the same. Found it was the harmonic balancer. Check the alternator drive belt for fraying. Also, use a screwdriver or small pry bar to try to wiggle the pulley along its hub.
I have the same noise on my 05 Tacoma only when its a cold morning start only for about 2-3 minutes at the most then goes away . I think its the Piston skirts only because I had a 1992 Toyota pickup with the 2.4 that I bought brand new and it sounded like a diesel sometimes in the morning on cold start up the dealer Mechanic told me that its the piston skirts . they are made that way to prevent scuffing so when the engine heats up . they don't expand so much that they wear. I guess he was right because my son still has that truck and its still running to this day with many miles on it and sounds and runs just fine . so it Could Not be a Rod or Wrist pin Knock because they never go away cold or hot
My 2001 has been doing that since 40K or so. I have 198K now and it hasn't gotten any worse. I just won't drive it until it warms up. I have a remote start, so I'm not too bothered by it. However, I also have a curious mind and would like to know what the heck it is also.
i have same sound after fax new hade gasket i find this noes in the( hydraulic lash adjuster ) its stranded not moving normal because i wash it with gasoline. then i open and cleane it after that i have smooth engine normal sound my regards to every body.....Ahmed....Iraq
goes away when warmed? does it match the rpm of the engine, if so give it an engine flush ass you probably have a sticky lifter. just change the oil back to back.
My T100 2.7 is doing the same thing as well. I was told by two mechanics it's ether the timing chain tensioner or guides. Took off my exhaust manifold heat shield, no change.
Jon M. Update: Changed the upper chain tensioner, no change. There is another one on the small chain, but can't get to it without taking the whole front engine apart. Guides looked a little worn, but again would have to take the front engine apart.

its the fucking heat shield covering the exhaust manifold. Either a nut or 2 came loose or the heat warped it
I thinks its the harmic balancer its the main pully in engine
Did you find out what it was?
My T!00 2.7 does the exact same thing.

No. The truck only does it during the cold cold winter months. I guess in Socal that may be just 1 month. It still does it...can't find the source.

I have this problem
does noise with the heat shield go away when warmed?
Any solution to your engine problem??
I mean harmonic balancer
Lc engineering sales an elimination kit which is right around 100$ and will solve your problem with that noise
Any word on the fix?
2004 tacoma 2.7 4x4 does exactly the same thing, but goes away soon after warming.
