So as crappy as it is for them, it helps the community learn things to look out for. TFL has the "money" that commoners may not have. Having to spend $3,000 plus on a single repair would kill some people.
They didn't spend $3k for the repair. They Traded the mechanic a vehicle for the repair. Plus, the mechanic paid TFL $1k.

That same job would easily cost $5,000 at an independent mechanic in Los Angeles.

I had my 01 done at 215k and it was only around $1500, and traded it in at 280k
I think this truck was fortunate to fall into the hands of people with the means and motivation to have it repaired. Far too few of these still on the road and it's always really nice to see one.
Being from MN...which is a road salt state...engine repairs are far easier and probably cheaper than keeping rust at bay. Even with an engine problem, the body and chassis are so clean, it would sell up here quickly.
Try powerwashing every spring and fall(undercarriage)and then every fall coat your underside with fluid film very liberally. I grew up in Chicago and my uncle did the same with used transmission fluid until he switched to fluid film. Worked great. Zero rust

@@eman0828 I bought an attachment for my powerwasher that slides around under my car and sprays straight up.
Bucket shim adjustment on pre 2005 models is the reason they have issues, most people *don't know* it's an adjustable valvetrain, and that instead of getting loose, they go tight, and burn the valves. The 1ZZ EF and 2ZZ FE do the same thing. It's usually someone has already put a coil and a plug in it, and it still missfires. I need to set up shop in Colorado, their labor rate has got to be crowding $150/HR.

My 2000 Taco 2.4 had the same thing at 198k. Rebuilt with Toyota parts. Still driving at @240k. love this truck.
I bought the same truck new mine had the extended cab , put 140k on it in 13 years ,the longest time I've ever kept a vehicle . the only thing to go wrong on mine was the digital clock quit in the first couple of years , I noticed yours is still working . These are great trucks in my opinion .

There's fan boys. If it was a Chevy with 180,000+ miles on it with this issue no way I'd say it was trash. By the way the little Tacoma didn't break down. It was still fully operational in year 20. But Toyotas are far from perfect. They just on average are less prone to major failures early in their lives. I could tell you plenty of stories of american vehicles crapping out well under 100,000 miles. I work with a lady who's husband tows boats for a living. On his heavy duty Chevrolet truck he's had to have it in the shop for significant repairs 3 times already (went into limp mode the other day) and it's only 2 years old. He drives it of course but all highway miles and always keeps up with maintenance. Really shouldn't be the case.
@@ShawDAMAN Of course - no brand is immune from issues but somehow the toyota bois are the worst about preaching how toyota is god and everything else is crap. There can be no compromise. Any logical person knows a used car is more about who owned it than who built it, but if there's so much as a light out on any other brand they seize on that and shout "what a POS!" while ignoring their own problems.
@@donhappel9566 I think there's a lot of truth to that but I would say the make is still significant. I don't care how often you change the fluids on a land rover or a fiat its almost certainly still going to have more issues after 100k than a Toyota or Honda with comparable maintenance (or for that matter, a Ford.)
Maybe Toyota fanboys are worse. Other manufactures have their irrational adherents too. You don't hear Chevy/ford/dodge guys screaming about reliability though... That isn't why you buy one of those vehicles and most of their owners realize it and are willing to put up with the likelihood of some less 'bulletproof' designs and build quality for other reasons.
There's a reason why Toyotas have the (albeit exaggerated) reputation that they do. I've owned two of them myself (as well as 2 other brands.) I prefer the Asian makes but I'm not blind. I owned a Honda Civic ("they run forever!") That had catastrophic transmission failure at 89,000 miles lol.
Wow. You could have bought a 1998, Chevy Cheyenne 4wd 305ci V8 access cab truck with 200k miles for that.

They replaced the head. But yeah, it just needed valve job which would be way less. They got ripped off.
@@toycoma98 They talked about that at the beginning but then said they rebuilt their.
Anyway yes mostlikely re-machining the valves would have done it and at worst replacing them.
As a nice optional touch being their, re-machining anything necessary on the head could be great but we are still far off à 3500$ bill...

That's the problem with a used Toyota. Previous owner was a Toyota person aka never change the oil, never service it on schedule.

I love the Taco. My 2001 had 340k on it with all original and it still burned rubber. Sadly it was totalled after a head on into an embankment and rollover. But insurance still gave me $7,500 for the truck. Needless to say...I got a newer Taco.

It really just depends on how well maintained the vehicle was. A lot of people neglect their vehicles
I have a 1999 3.4l Tacoma with 285k miles. About two years ago I needed a new head. A new head was going to cost me $1,600 here in Seattle.
If the 2nd head was to fail soon after I'd be out $3,200.
I elected to put in a used 3.4 from Japan. Guaranteed to have under 50,000 miles.
That cost me $3,600. I feel good about that decision.
Toyota has a reputation for reliability and everything I'm just curious why most the people I know that drives them have trouble with them? I don't have alot of experience with them personally but what I've seen from people that have them doesn't match what the internet and rumors say. A guy I know always talks about how reliable Toyota is and there the best thing ever. I asked him what all he had to go bad on his tundra that's 10 years old he names off a few thousand dollars worth of things. That doesn't seem so great
A friend of mine has over 300,000 miles with only routine maintenance. Wear items like brakes, tires, bulbs, 1-clutch have been replaced as needed. Still running strong. He bought a 2.7 manual brand new and has no plans to replace it unless it gets stolen or totalled.
I have had 3 toyotas and 2 hondas and they have been amazing. You obviously have to do regular maintenance. Buying an old car of any make or model without knowing how the previous owners maintained it is always like playing Russian roulette.
I bought a 2.7 Pre runner new in 2002 and drove for 185000 miles and never had to do one repair, only front brakes and fluid changes . Get a Tacoma if you can.
ran 100psi in cylinder 6 for over a year on my 350 vortec where the other cylinders were 150psi. Was still running strong where I did have a misfire every now and then, but still drove my truck all over the place and didn't fail a bit. $3500? WOW!

Love the series. I could use the black plastic at the bottom of the front bumper after you pull it. My son punted our 2004 into a snow bank after passing into a blizzard on the west side of the Eisenhower Tunnel.

toyota fanboys have driven up the value of used toyotas way beyond what they’re worth. They’ll get you to 200,000 miles, but anything beyond that is really just luck.
They have the least amount problems as they age when you compare to the rest. I still drive a 15 year old Camry SE trim model and pretty much everything still works for its age. Can't say the same for others.
@@adurpandya2742 My Tacoma was light years better than any GM or FORD pile of 💩💩💩💩 they sold me. Toyota made a fan boy out me because FORD and GM sure could not. My 88 Sierra spent more time at the dealer than I drove it. The 97 Taurus nearly broke me financially...with 2 engines and 3 transmissions. One head job on this Toyota is almost inconsequential.
I had a 2001 that I purchased new in Charleston, SC. Every year I would visit my family in upstate NY at Christmas and noticed how much valve clatter I would hear in the NY cold weather. It would sound like a diesel when it was cold. Go back to Charleston and I would forget about it until the following year. Kept that truck for 6 years and 130k without a single issue.
I drive a 92 civic SI,put a new timing belt in a couple of years ago and at the time they checked compression, one cylinder was 100,2 were at 110 and last one was at 180. Did the work anyway because the car still ran great even with the 429 thousand kms on it. Drove it almost two more years and to 462 thousand until finally it was running on only 3 cylinders because compression got so low,drove it home 1100 kms from where I was working in northern British Columbia and it’s now sitting in driveway 🚗
I love this truck. I can't wait for the auction to start. The bid will most likely go beyond what I want to pay but someone will be a very happy camper with this.

I have a v8 twin turbo diesel 200 series Landcruiser here as well and love it 2 bits
365,000km (227,000miles) on it now and still going strong
I owned a 2000 4Runner 3.4 2wd with 185k miles on it. Truck was never abused meticulously maintained and never overheated! Misfire symptoms slowly started to appear out of nowhere. Long story short it turned out I had a small fracture on one of the cylinder heads. Pulled them both out and replaced with rebuilt ones from a machine shop out of Texas after doing this job twice for trying to have the heads just rebuilt. Lesson learned! Total spent on job even after me listening to local shop to have them rebuilt was around $1700 with be Asin timing belt kit, idler, tensioner, thermostat, water pump etc. But all that labor was done by me in my home garage so I did not feel too bad and learned the engine inside out! These engines can be intimidating but are not that bad after you go over some videos or manual and buy one or two special tools that you will eventually reuse.
I cry a tear for the Rocky glad you went to a good home.

I betcha find out that the engine after your repair is still rough at idle with the transmission in drive. Remember that this is a 4 Cylinder 2.7 liter engine. While we don't think that 2.7 liters is large, for a 4 cylinder automotive engine, it is huge. With only two power pulses per crankshaft rotation, it is bound to vibrate. The 2.4 liter 4 cylinder version of this engine is far smoother with an automatic.
When asked why he chose a 12 cylinder V12 2500 CC engine design for the 250 Testa Rosa ,the designer of Ferrari engines said that for maximum smoothness and power in a 4 cycle engine you should never exceed 400 CCs per cylinder. That said, any 4 Cylinder 4 cycle engine larger than 1600 CCs is a compromise. Think about what jewels 1600 CC 4 cylinder engines are.
The 2.7 was a great engine hooked to a manual transmission. It had no load until you let out the clutch. Hooked to an Automatic transmission, not so great. As a customer relations manager, working in a Toyota dealership, I would try to steer purchasers into the V-6 if they had to have an automatic. I also trained our sales staff to do the same. We lost some sales to other dealers because of that. With 6 dealers in a 50 mile radius, I saw the results of this. People would want the 4 cylinder with an automatic in 2 wheel drive (2.4 liters) and they were great. But in 4 wheel drive 4 cylinder automatic customers were unhappy at how the engine felt sitting at a stoplight or stop sign in Drive. For a while, I would get customers who purchased a 4 Cylinder 4 X 4 automatic from another dealer and come into our dealership unhappy with their truck and I would have to try to handle them. All I could do was tell them; that was normal with this engine and the only answer was to shift into neutral or park when sitting at a stop light.. Needless to say they were not satisfied, but what could I say. I even had a customer that I spoke with when they were purchasing a 4 wheel drive and left our dealership as I would not sell them a 4 cylinder automatic. A month later they came into the dealership complaining that the 4 cylinder engine that they purchased from another dealer was really rough and demanded that we take care of it as the other dealer would not. Since I had spoken with them when they were purchasing it and would not sell them the 4 cylinder, it was easy to tell them that there was nothing we could do and I told them that when they were purchasing it. This was only customer complaint that I could not satisfy. Working with Toyota, we eventually solved it by taking his 4 Cylinder in trade for a v-6 3.4. We then wholesaled it to a used car lot in Wyoming.
2 years later Toyota solved the problem by only offering the automatic with the 3.4 V-6 in a 4x4
Mitsibushi tried to get around that by mounting 2 counter rotating balance shafts in the bottom of the engine on their 2.5 liter 4cylinder engine which caused other problems when the timing belt would skip a cog on the balance shafts which would then have the engine bouncing around under the hood like a crazed break dancer on acid. This could happen even though the timing belt was OK and the valve timing was not disturbed.
That makes a lot of sense!!! I see why people swap for 2.4l or v6. I have a taco 4x4 that the previous owner swapped a 2.4 into it.

I’m at 260 on my 95 taco with a oil pump leak and it’s still running strong lol,
I also got a starter problem with the connection plastic broken off got me stranded for like 3 hours till we figured it out lol
A mechanic quoted me 900 for the oil pump fix I said I might as well get a engine rebuild I want my taco to go all the way up to 1000000
I have a 2002 Tacoma with the v six with just over 307,000 miles. I just had the same issue and had my head rebuilt just got it back on the road and it runs like it did when it was new.
You guys should put LC Engineering header on that. It was the best thing I did for my toy when I had it. I kept cracking the stock exhaust manifold from heat off road. And it eliminates 2 of the connections in the down pipe. It goes from the engine to the cat as one peace.
The 2004 came with a header stock.
That is a pretty sweet truck Whoever gets it We'll be lucky . I picked up a four-wheel 95 Toyota Tacoma 6 months ago . She seems to be pretty sound, Garage kept For many years. She only has 86000 MI On her . I'm going to definitely Baby yet!

I've commented on this multiple times over the years but I really want to see TFL build up a 'cheap Jeep' 05-10 Grand Cherokee WK with the 5.7 Hemi and Quadra drive II. I've always believed that the toyota tax just isn't worth it. You started this tacoma series by saying these thing were bullet proof and then brought up the common frame rust issue and are now having engine issues. The WKs are depreciated to the point where you can get a very good condition one, with the full quadra drive offroad package (electronic locking F/C/R diffs and skid plates) and a Hemi V8, for well under $10k. I would even recommend a 'cheap Jeep' father son challenge with a WJ vs WK that could be very well built for under $10k each or compare it to your FJ cruiser. I'm biased since I own one, but I think the Hemi WK is an overlanding bargain and even with higher maintenance costs, overall cost of ownership is still less than a similar year toyota or wrangler. I love the offroad videos you produce and especially the cheaper off road builds, I been a TFL viewer for over 10 years now, keep up the great content!!
Rebuilt heads are 6-700.00...3500.00? That’s a crate engine...
Maybe it was way cheaper but they needed that reality tv drama for views.
Boulder is an expensive area. So when you add the costs to get it out do the job and put it back to the cost of all genuine Toyota parts I could see $3/3500.

Yeah I’m pretty disappointed in TFL, they totally got hosed. You could have easily taken that head to a good engine builder and had brand new seats put in, new stem seals, the whole nine yards, for 1/3rd of what they paid.
So much for that Toyota reliability.

TOYOTA QUALITY!!! That truck must have **1 Million*187,000 miles** on it! It's not possible that a TOYOTA engine could fail at a measly 187,000 miles. Even LADA's last longer then that!

Weird. That 3RZ is widely considered to be one of the most reliable engines that Toyota ever made. Guess it goes to show anything can break. My V6 4Runner with the 3.4 5VZ was running strong at 305k miles when I sold it. Good on you guys for fixing it though!
I do think the 3500 is a bit steep - but I'm certain it depends on where you live and if you have full confidence in that mechanic, then it is worth it. However as the owner of 2 Tacomas (2019 TRD Off Road with 91K miles and 2002 TRD Off Road with 240K miles), I have to say the $3500 is a small price to pay considering (other than basic maintenance) you will probably go another 200K miles with no issues. Our trucks see plenty of off road time (we own a horse farm) and the reliability of these little trucks is far better than the GMC/Ford trucks we have/had. BTW I love the topper on that little truck - very functional.

I recommend Engine Tune Ups every 30,000 -40,000 I have over 200,000 Miles On MY Tacoma Noticed Engine Tune Up, including a few upgrades The Truck will last a long time !!!

Toyotas last forever...except this one has a new frame, oh and a new valve train. If it were human it would have osteopetrosis and need open heart surgery. Glad it's fixed!
I recently had to sell my 01 because the cab rotted out and didnt pass inspection. Sad times😔 even worse cause one of my best friends is buying it so I gotta watch him have fun with it lol
If you think you have the same problem before spending that money. buy some decarbon remover in a spray can. AC Delco is great. Sometimes a little bit of carbon on the valve seat will prevent full compression on a cylinder, causing a missfire and a shaky idle.
I thought Toyotas didn't even need an oil change until one million miles. Someone must have deliberately done this.

42,000 miles our dealership got a warranty return on a doctors Toyota and found he had never changed the oil. Yeah a doctor.
@@FarmerTed Of course I was just joking, but I do know a guy who drives nothing but Dodges and he told me that they never need oil changes. He said he just changes the filter and tops off the oil. He wasn't joking either.
The last two Totas my son had were both low compression on one cylinder. The true sing before he checked compression was the gear drop vibration. Driven easy they will go a long time. Drive them like a rental and they will get towed.

Well shoot, I was waiting for the Rocky to get TFL Bids so I could have a shot at buying it.
Did you all not consider getting a JDM 2.7 or 3.4 swap into the truck? As I have several engine swapped JDM engine cars and they run like Tops and handle the added S/C’r without issues. You would only need a bridge harness from Toyonlyswaps, an ECU, and a harness from the recycler.
Mine cracked in-between the valves and at the plug too. Never over heated just one of those things with these

@@bobw9297 That motor is problematic. The 3.0 was a pile of crap. The 4.0 sounds awful. The electric actuated transfer case actuators fail regularly. The 3.5 pairs terribly with the auto in the new Tacomas and are always looking for the right gear. Almost all of the 4Runners and Tacomas lean to one side. The list goes on and on. They are still good vehicles, but people lie to themselves about how good they are.

@@bobw9297 I agree 100%, no CVTs. That is pretty funny. I also have a 2017 Ram 1500 as my main personal vehicle and a Ford van (Transit) for work. I am just lacking the GMC.
Edti: And if you count my girlfriend's 4Runner and my Tacoma, we also have 2 Toyotas. I will have to start looking for an old GMC.
My Ford 300 blew a head gasket around 220k. Since it had such high milage I went ahead and had the head rebuilt. Costed around $320 for the rebuild and head gasket. I did the rest of the labor myself. So $3,500 seems real steep. I know a shop has gotta make decent margins to stay operational but man that seems high priced.
What did the rest of the labor include?

My silver02 single cab has 365000 miles on it lol my dad bought it new and I bought it from him with 230000 for 3 grand lol great trucks
Those years were the best. The interior is something to laugh about but the rest is pretty solid. Too bad chevy is junk now

I have the very same truck that I bought new. 68K miles on it. Have the valves on your truck ever been checked/adjusted?
@@fetcher321 luckily not. I’ve have to replace my timing chain and that’s it. And I did the Delete so there’s only one timing chain instead of 3. But ya shes been a great truck! I mainly use it for hunting now cause I bought a newer 4 door so she doesn’t get the full load anymore lol
I'm confused. He rebuilt the head? I would figure the head would be brought to a machine shop for seats and guides ect. 🤔

I'm starting to think Charlie had a new head and really wanted that Rocky. He sent the old head off for a valve job, and now still has a good head. Charlie is a smart cookie.
Seems on par with the leaking valve cover job on my 2017 Tundra. Both valve covers were leaking, thankfully I have the extended warranty or I'd be paying out of pocket for 21 hours plus parts 😬

@@ChaoticDave69 oh crap sorry, valve cover* supposedly when Toyota switched to liquid gasket maker the machine wasn't applying a sufficient amount causing the seal to leak within 60k miles or less. They rectified the issue in 2018.

The biggest problem in Toyota's of those years and often overlook is the valve springs if you measure the tension of the springs they are 47 pounds but after 80to 100 thousand miles they will be somewhere of 30 to 32 well below minimum specks I haven't found a machine shop that will take they time to measure springs they most of them just reassemble the head using the old springs

The Tacoma I had ten years ago had the same low compression problem. I found a cylinder head at a salvage yard for $100, took it to a retired Toyota mechanic, he rebuilt and machined the cylinder head for $450. A month later, I had him install the new cylinder head for $900. It was that cheap because I didn't need the repair right away... and I installed the water pump and thermostat myself. It's always a good idea to replace the thermostat and water pump if you're replacing the head gasket or removing the cylinder head. An overheating engine is a bitch!
I remember a lot of fans telling you : " why a Land Rover, you should buy a Toyota and bla, bla, bla". 🤣🤣🤣. Moral of the story: any old car could fail, it doesn't matter the brand. For me, the most important thing with old cars is the spare parts availability, and for that, american brands has no competition.
This. F150's and Silverados in particular. It is stupid easy to keep them going as even classic parts are kept in stock at the stores

You can sell your 3 years old Tacoma with 50K on it for $5 K less than what you paid for 3 years ago. But look up the old FORD Ranger's used price too.if you want a 4X4 nothing is cheap..Used prices are manipulated by the the different "book values" in N-America. Used prices are MUCH lower in Europe..

@@shanechepren8119 well you see it’s not a new head, it’s a refurbished one. It’s very common the buy a refurbished part for quicker installation and sell the bad part to be refurbished and sold elsewhere

@@shiftmotorsports9803 Lol compare that do a Dodge/Chrysler/Fiat or your Ford, GM and Nissan. Toyota's statistically have the least amount of problems as they age. I still drive a 15 year old Camry se and everything works with 191k miles on it.
