If you really want a one lens system for travel, whatever, then I think the 24-200mm lens is the “ant’s pants”. This is not just for the focal length but because of the weight, it is much lighter. If you’re going to have a two lens system, then the 28-400mm and the 14-30mm lenses would be the way to go. Of course if you’re really into focal length, then the Nikon P950 or P1000 is going to give you a lot of joy. The P1000 is pretty big but 3000mm focal length plus a 4X digital zoom is going to do things no other camera would have a hope of doing. Cheers
Hey Buddy :) :) I just got back from a photovaca to Lisbon, Porto, Paris for 32days of starting early and going to very late...... The Z7 n 24-200 was on my cross body sling (but in My hands continuously with it turned on) Many Many gigs of Street photos!!!!!!! Yes I wish it might have been a bit longer but the 24mm is A MUST !!!!!!!!!
I'm an amateur photographer shooting general subjects like people, pets, travel, parades at Disneyland, nighttime events (with and without bright artificial lights) and the zoo. I have found that 24mm is more important to me than 400mm, particularly since I do not hesitate to use DX mode when useful to get a 36 - 300mm range. However, I've always had a super zoom and when this lens came out I was seriously tempted to buy it. I'm still tempted, but I keep resisting for all of the reasons you mention, as well as not being able to justify all the negatives of the longer lens to essentially gain another 100mm (when in DX mode). I think I would regret buying it. Just my opinion and use case, of course.
My Z7 (Very reasonable to buy now) Is amazing with the 24-200!!! The extra MP make for great files !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! KEEP SHOOTING :) :) :)
A geared head is the best solution when shooting from a tripod. You can easily dial in your composition and don't have to worry about ball head lens droop. The 28-400mm performs very well on a geared head.
I've looked into them and felt like they were a little too big for my liking, but I high key might take another look at them because of what you mentioned and the more accurate compositions
After owning few prime lenses 28mm~400mm become a my conclusion.I couldnt be bother to keep changing lenses while on the move. I shall sell off 40mm, 50mm, 85mm except 24mm and 105mm macro.
I'm not gonna lie, I didn't expect so many people to be such a fan of the 24-200mm. 😂

How about 24-200 with 2x Teleconverter so in case I am short of focal length I have it around. Any thoughts?

24-200mm is personal, hard to replace it.
