China has been sacrificing its environment and its people to feed its ever-growing economic powerhouse. The production of computers, cars, and other goods, all at prices below anywhere else in the world, has driven the Chinese boom relentlessly on. Now though China is finally paying the price. "I think they knew it was poisonous to humans but if they used another chemical our output would not have been increased". These are the words of one worker in the computer industry who has seen her and her colleagues sacrificed to produce cheap computers for the rest of the world. However, it is not just the workers who are suffering; China's environment has been badly damaged. One community living next to an incinerator, which consumes China's growing waste, claim their community has been savaged by pollution. "No-one knows who will be the next to die." Some Chinese have been attempting to arrest damage, "I tell the bosses of some companies that you might make money as big as mountains of gold and silver, but, if all the money is made from the loss of green rivers and blue mountains your future generations will curse us, ", but is this all too little too late?

Wow, watching this documentary really makes me think twice about buying new gadgets. There are those who buy new gadgets every few months just to keep up with the waves of technology, but the health and environmental costs of both manufacturing and recycling old technology are way too great to warrant such frivolous trend-catching. I will definitely aim to be less materialistic and instead invest in "experiential goods" in the future.
did u live up to that?
The Chinese are using a rapid drying adhesive due to the speed needed to produce the product. There are better effective adhesives, but the CCP produces everything at the expense of the peoples’ health and well-being, even food and housing. I agree with you though as I watch on my iPad. We are guilty too.
Did I just see fisherman use those birds to catch fish!? That's awesome.
time stamp
watching this using my macbook pro made me feel disgusted. :( this is really sad. awesome documentary. thanks for sharing!
Great document, thanks to the reporter and staff. And thanks for posting it to the public.
These journalists are heroes.
@hlvs44 they're cormorants (also known as shags), and have been used in China, Japan and Macedonia for fishing. (check out wikipedia under "cormorant fishing")
:)
22:53 that's the most amazing way to fish I have ever seen, I wonder how they train their birds.
Cormorant fishing
Very old tradition in china
Thank you for the full documentary and shedding light on this topic.
Thanks for sharing this!
Props for the guy speaking back in Chinese when those security guards approached them. Cool move! :-)
today those people will be send to training jails
@@abdAlmajedSaleh well lady at the beginning is somehow related to a historically significant figure of the revolution so not gonna happen. She was in the 3 gorges damn vid
Wow, much respect for knowing Chinese and English and probably other languages. That's a rare quality to see in reporters now a days.
23:05 LOL how did they train those bigass birds.
There's so much cool shit in this video but what stood out for me was how they got the birds to catch fish for them that was wild.
Keep fighting my brothers and sisters.
thank you fot the info! we really need to do something about this..
Big respect to the guy, he learned Chinese.
Excellent.
Best ever.
Chinese people are paying heavy price for what government is doing to world as well as to their people. Law of nature works every where. Kar bhala ho bhala kar bura ho bura.
ANd NOW the entire GLOBE is paying the price for CHINA's developement! in July 2020!
Sessshh bihari
These stories really are heartbreaking!
This called real news reporting
And a true journalist without fear
Respect and love from india
On the contrary, My hometown in China has witness a drastic environment improvement in resent 10 years. Cause most of the young people have migrant to cities, only few old people left. Forest are expanding, a lot of paddy rice field have been abandoned. The village school once have more than 50 students has been shut done due to lack of young students. A lot of rural areas I went to, have the same trend.
@tomyweekend It is a little more complex than that, but you have a point.
great leap forward
Just over 20,000 views?
So many, many more need to see this. This should be on the featured videos list.
Just make me cry.
22:55 epic fishing technique
I got very scared @12:02. I would've ran away ASAP.
how terrible the pollution in china is ....
I hope this program can be aired in China. Good on you Australia!
i remember my friend old firebird. he ran race gas, he could make your eyes water and throat hurt. when he fired it up. ran like hell though.
@Shalek They are tres cool indeed..
Amen!
@tuubydude Yes, they do - the birds are specially trained to not swallow the fish (or perhaps it takes them a little while?) and are tame.. Its very clever - the first time I saw that was on the Marco Polo TV mini-series (which is utterly amazing I may add - highly recommended if you can find it on RUclips, DVD or download a torrent of it).
I think there are still some big parts of the water utilization which are not fully utilized. To maximize utilization you must raise fishes in all the rivers you have to suffice local food consumption. To prevent from the occurrence of landslide near the rivers you must plant heavier rooted trees like bamboos etc to hold the soil from landslides and make the ground more stable from water distructions. In the lower level areas you must built large fish pens so that you can maximize water utilization before it goes to the sea beds.
I think it's great when we can see first hand what other people are going through. That said, what happens when the reporters leave and the story go out, the person who was interviewed get fired or something even worse. What can they do after that? Will the news reporter come back and provide for them? Maybe it Will be a good idea if the news reporters and their companies can guarantee their survival.
Simon Lai so you want they to shut up? you had better shut up first
you don't need to feel bad. feel bad for yourself, then we'll talk.
Thanks for this video.Very thanks! That is terrible thats going in China.
22:50 id like to know more abort these birds and their relationship to the fishermen :P
It IS TOO LATE
No its not. London used to be just as smoggy as Beijing, back when it first industrailized. Back then everything was coal powered and the smog was thick all throughout the city. Mother nature has a way of cleaning up messes, it just takes time. The trick is to stop making messes.
@tomyweekend - Nobody is forcing China to produce these consumer goods. The Chinese people jumped at the opportunity and if their Government refuses to protect them from pollution by properly regulating industry, then they have no one to blame but themselves and their government.
It looked like the fishermen were fishing using birds. Wow.
I’m just going to say that if they hung onto some of those complete keyboards, they could have made a lot more money in 2022. Many of those were vintage, mechanical keyboards, wasted for river pollution and burned plastic fumes. What a horrible shame…
wow thats pretty cool how to use the birds to catch fishes O_o 23:00
@nzg24 it's not only apple though, all other companies probably do same thing
sadly true
hello, can you please redo this with an update to year 2017; Climate Change has change the landscape, was this area included in the 2017 Climate Change scenario?
thank you mazu,
ETN...
20000 more cant get through horrible youtube ads
I guess boycotting companies who show negligence with regards to matters like industrial pollution and worker health/safety doesn't quite work or..?
@cannoir no they don't
At 13:20+, this is very much like "AVATAR", Fire Nation enslaving the Earth Nation. Aang should have appeared then. LOL!
12:01 highlight of the clip
worse bit is we don't know if those products with apple logos where apple products.
this movie is okay and everything but
THAT IS THE BEST WAY OF FISHING THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!
What tying string round the birds throats so they can’t swallow the fish, I don’t think so.....!!!
too bad, l think l will buy less e-product if it is not necessary, since these product had hurt so many people before sell.
i like the way he says n hexane
Makes me look at my IPod in a different way.
Does anyone know the name of those birds the fishermen are using at 22:50?
All things come to an end.
too late
I just feel....guilty.
this is just sad ;'(
@lokir it is Mandarin, and it is not fluent at all, but great respect to this guy, who have heart larger than the china government itself...
I don't think they were white stickers, I think they were the rear sides of the plastic logos.
The lawyer has it right. She said something that wasn't translated properly. She said "but China is always moving forward and becoming more open."
People will get sick from it, but in the long run, today's suffering will turn into tomorrow's prosperity.
We need people like the industrialists pushing for industrialization, but we also need the people and the lawyers to keep them in check.
Burned medical waste? That's the most disgusting concept ever. And the whole valley's covered in it! And the police is just looking for someone to blame that word got out. Surreal.
hauptsache, die städte sind sauber....
@JosefAlAbdeli They put a small ring around their neck to the fish can't go to their stomach, it's very fascinating to see this !
It is sad for the poor who have been living in that hell hole. The ones that have no choice or voice that the rich dont care about. Wish i could help those who have been taken advantage of.
China's economic rise is a marvel. For centuries, it had been the center of the world. And now, it's about time China regain its prestige in the 21st century.
smoke is the new soviet breath
did those guys use birds to fish??? O_O wow
what a shame all the beautful greenry going to ruin i feel so sorry for them people x
proof is Authentic Apple store doesn't put any company name on their Store Door. they just simply put an apple logo.
Not even a bottle of cider???????? MAAAAAARRR
That "bag-camera" policeman was probably some paranoid dude who was tripping out bout the camera o_0
how do you know if it was a secret/undercover police?
@coinageboy
You can only try.
Now I can never again think of beautiful ancient Chinese people being safe from the destructive forces killing our beautiful garden home we all call Mother, we love her and cannot live any life worth living when the diseased greedy ones defile all of life. There are worse things than death. It's not that I never heard of the problem China has with pollution, but aside from a bit of news, I knew nothing like this and I should not be surprised that it's so bad now, I we must turn it all around, clean up the filth and disease no matter what it takes each of us to help. Many hands make light work! ✌️💕or 😭
Wow, sniffing burnt plastic for a living.
I guess that's the cost for developing! There are always trade-offs! Better living standards is at the cost of environmental damage. I am Chinese n I most say that though the Chinese gov't has done very well in modernization of the country but it most also focus on protect its environment. They r talking harder steps to limit green house gases emissions. By introducing electrical Taxis, Wind mill power, efficiency in manufacturing n so forth. I know the gov't will succeed.
wow, i clicked on this video by accident in subscribed list, but i do not regret it.
This shows China as the pure right capitalistic government: the strong will live and prosper even more, the weak will suffer and perish even more.
n‑Hexane lol everytime he says it i laugh.
Amyjpoppy, u just made me log into my account to like this :D
It's a good thing I'm using a used server computer. Also, I wasn't only talking about computers: I wont buy anything Apple: and I know most other companies use Chinese labor also but Apple/Foxconn are well know for their terrible work conditions.
"Chinese people will not be stopped by anything. If pollution ruins a river - we will build a new river, if pollution destroys a mountain - we will build a new mountain." - Chinese ambassador Shu La Ning
@zwartjepiet
is english not ur first language?
Not much better here in the U.S. I worked in a lead battery plant.
Then I worked around robot welders and CNC plasma, without
proper ventilation. Luckily the coughing went away after I quit.
I now have fibre-myalga, I'm unemployed and I'm paying for
my drugs and health-care out of my savings.
GAH. i wish china would do something about the enviormental issue!
Wow! What are they doing at 22:52 ? Are they using ducks to catch fish for them?
Well even Steve jobbs got messed up by its own chemical products.
He really died of aids look up Wikileaks but his complications was cancer
@hichoul they is australian brah
well lets just hope that Steve Jobs ended up in a modern minimalistic black/white design hell
17:53 i just thought "You're in the wrong nation, buddy!"
17:53
As if people have a choice
@TheXanian its not that easy, its never that easy. If the CCP is, as you say, destroyed, another government will rise up and take its place and may make the same mistakes. The problem isn't just the CCP, but the global pressure that is being put on China to keep up with global growth.
the mistake of others must be a lesson not to follow. that's basic logic Mr. Zhengsheng. Your reason is not logical in any way to make this problem normal.
@khunopie What?
I've noticed this on a few of your videos; link boxes at the start, middle and end, asking people to watch a playlist, or other/ next films in a series.
This is hugely distracting, and relatively intrusive, and seems at odds with some of the serious subjects discussed in your films.
By all means, provide people with links at the end of a film - often I'd love to watch more, but please consider removing them during; at the very least, move them from bottom center on a subtitled piece.
Is it too late? Almost 30 years ago when I was 13, I used to go to the delaware river to fish, the water absolutely stunk, my mother knew without asking if I had been near that river and nobody would even think of eating fish caught in the river. Today, the water doesn't stink and the fish are edible. You can turn the tide, but it takes political will.
Those poor ducks...
@SERENASOPHIE Indeed - the smog would probably be blowing over thier heads with the wind anyway! The people in that village are really being unfairly treated.. Im all for China being run in thier own manner but the Govt. needs to step in and enforce environmental law more rigorously, thats just common sense. What the woman said at the end was spot on - you can't eat gold and drink silver..
Did anyone else touch their Mac logo?
