Hawthorne would have still been probably evil. Since Morgan's first husband would have still taken away Dahlia and Iris with him, since Morgan being passed over as Head Master was the reason he left and that wouldn't have changed without DL-6 probably. After that she would have still gotten adopted by the Hawthornes, and all events would still happen the same mostly.

So the press doesn't know or doesn't care about the full details of the case, they're just laser focused on the fact that the police was using "mystic seancing" in place of real detective work, and that the suspect singled out was "innocent" (according to the final ruling). I think the fact that the seancing was both real and not even remotely debunked in that very case is intentional irony. Most likely commentary on the absolute state of media reporting of legal cases.
