My late mother-in-law was in the audience at the Canton Civic waiting for him to show up. This is actually how it is portrayed in an article I read online somewhere. In 1952 he missed more shows than he made. People had pretty much written him off as a live performer at this point. For once, I am inclined to believe a RUclips OP. Thanks for sharing.
"If the good Lord's willing and the creek don't rise..." Yay! I love Hank. And I'm from WV. Glad to see you passing thru, as I haven't lived there for a long time, and get back rarely. I think you covered some old mining ruins, closer to my hometown awhile back. I was born in Moundsville & raised in Morgantown, moved to L.A. as soon as I turned 21. Hank was 29 biological yrs. at his death, but way upwards of that psychologically or spiritually. What we might call an "Old Soul". "When the Lord made me - he made a Ramblin' Man". Two other ahead-of-their-time old souls in the music genre come-to-mind ---Jim Morrison and John Fogerty.
Hope I enjoyed it? Rigor set in. That means they left him in the car anywhere from 2 to 6 hours. This disturbed me more than anything else. Clearly they didn't just go for food.
JD I'm sorry. I took the story to be factual. I really wasn't thinking there was any conspiracy here. OD? I thought he was just sick. It shows that I know absolutely nothing about Hank Williams other than he was a famous Country and Western singer.
His driver said in a interview his heart basically exploded. Sad story. They were heading to a show and hank was laying in the back seat with this cowboy hat over his face and a blanket over him sleeping. The driver knew something was not right at some point and pulled over asked for directions to nearest hospital and was pronounced dead when arrived.
Your correct on the rigor Mortis, it could have been as early as 4 hours, just saw the movie, I saw the light, I suggest it to anyone who wants to get up to speed on his life and career
Hank did us all a whole world of good. If ya gotta die in a Cadillac that was a fine Cadillac to die in. I owned two of them at one time. Hank could write and sing a fine song. Way too early to pass on. Way too early.
Well I was thumbin' from Montgomery, I had my guitar on my back... ..when a stranger stopped beside me in an antique Cadillac. He was dressed like 1950, Half drunk n hollow eyed... ... he said . "It's a long walk to Nashville, would you like a ride son" Well, I sat down in the front seat, he turned on the radio... ...and them sad ol' sounds coming out them speakers was solid country gold. Then I noticed the stranger was ghost white pale when he asked me for a light... ...and I knew there was something strange about this ride. He said "Drifter, can you make folks cry when you play and sing?" "Have you paid your dues, Can you moan the blues, Can ya bend them guitar strings?" He said "Boy, can you make folks feel what ya feel inside?" "Cause, if your big star bound, let me warn ya it's a long, hard ride."
Yes! Another great song about Hank, is "Midnight in Montgomery," by Alan Jackson. Hauntingly🎶🎤🎸🎶 beautiful, gives you goosebumps & chills❄. We had a lake house, that was about a 45 minute drive, one way, to Montgomery, AL. If we needed to shop for clothes & necessity, that's where we went. It was usually juat me and 2 year old daughter. If we stayed past dark, it never failed, that song played on our way home, sometimes 2-4X's. Even @ that age, my daughter loved it, and never wanted me to turn to a different radio station. (Even if we did, that song would be playing) Also, lots of Railroad tracks and crossings, and we had to stop for a train 🚂 to come thru, blowing his horn. By the time we got home, I was completely freaked😨 out. lol Mommy had to have a "drinkable spirit."🍸🍸, and daughter had to have bottle and bedtime 🍼🛌🐑
The previous place the driver stopped at for food was the "Burger Bar" in Bristol, Va. It is still there and they have a website. The "baby blue" 1952 Cadillac convertible is in the Hank Williams Museum in Montgomery, Al.
Hey Dan about 20 to 30 minutes away from the hilltop house in Harper's ferry, there is a bar the rainbow road. U should stop in there the next time ur close. That's where the filmed some of the movie called sweet dreams. Omg when u go in and u look at the pics and autographs from everybody from pasty cline to Hank . They all played there. It's a pretty good time and the owner is old school a real cool guy. The story's that man has incredible. Your safe when u go in he don't allow any crap in that place. Good guy with a mountain of country music story's.
Most greatest legend that God bring here ,ICry when Iwatch this video ,May have ben his time to go ,we never know the answer ,so sorry he had to leave Hank jr and Audrey and all his fans so young ,we will always remember and love you Great Hank Williams sr
I'm currently living in West Virginia and I know that this place really isn't far at all from where my husband's mother and all of her side of the family are from the area in which you filmed this. His mother is from a small town called Gauley Bridge, Hilltop & Oak Hill (from what she has just told me) aren't very far from each other at all...maybe 15 miles or so, and she also told me a few minutes ago that she was just a young girl at the time, but, remembers when they found Hank Williams in his car. She was living at home at the time in Gauley Bridge. I showed her this video and she just couldn't believe that anyone really remembered this happening there. (she also just informed me that she was a huge Hank Williams fan at the time too..lol).
In some of the old movies you'll hear "The Show Must Go On" So No Matter what is going on, no matter how sick you are, You Go On! The Curtain Opens, You Perform. I think if You're that ill, You Cancel the Tour. Save your Life! There's Always Next Year. RIP .....
Thanks for this video Dan! One of my favorite songs by The Cramps (Bend Over I'll Drive) mentions Hank Williams' death in a car as well as Jayne Mansfield, Ernie Kovacs, and Grace Kelly. It was really interesting to see the actual place!
Amazing how someone as famous as Hank Williams can die in such a neglected state. Those around him should have talked him into taking a break and get help.
im reading the book HANK. the man was a moving train wreck from day one. some people stuck with him. i sure would not have. plus he had an undiagnosed case of spina bifida his whole life.
The autopsy report says there was only a 'trace' amount of alcohol found in HW's system. So, this is false reporting, he did not die of over drinking alcohol. He died of respiratory failure and a blocked ventricle due to morphine, heroin, and Chloral hydrate, a sedative, also called a hypnotic. Chloral hydrate slows the activity of your central nervous system. This medicine has both fast-acting and long-lasting sedative effects. The autopsy also stated that HW had been beaten very recently. He had evidence of being kicked in the groin, a cracked rib and bruises all about the body, a huge welt protruding from his head, a few lacerations and a very recently bandaged hand. No explanation has ever been given for why he was beaten or when or by whom. He was born with Spina Bifida, a very painful spine condition. He was also an alcoholic from age 11. His father had PTSD, which they called shell-shock back then, and was confined to a V.A. Hospital after WWI. I'd like to know why no one talks about Charles Carr getting a speeding ticket that night and that he also appeared in front of a judge and paid that ticket. Who else saw Charles Carr that night? And what about the supposed hitch hiker Charles Carr said he picked up? He was said (by Carr) to be a soldier. What happened to him? Why was he never found? Why was there no investigation into HW's death? Beaten about the head, injected with morphine, unconscious when put into the car, driven to the next gig in an ice storm? What happened to his hat? It was said he only had a t-shirt on when he was taken from the car. Where was his shirt? Something is just not right about this whole thing.
I read every bio almost on Hank, none mentions anything about a hitchhiker, he was beaten earlier where I don't know, Hank carried pistols often, and he got into bar fights a lot, I think he got beat up in Alabama before he left on tour
You have your facts wrong. Carr never admitted to picking up a hitchhiking soldier. However, the state patrolman who stopped him did report seeing a third person, dressed in uniform, in the vehicle. Which is odd because this was before Carr (or in other accounts Williams himself) solicited the relief driving services of Don Surface. What is weird, to me anyways, is that Carr had reported he dropped Surface off before driving Hanks body to the Oak Hill hospital. Yet other account report Surface was absolutely present when Hanks corpse was delivered to the hospital. Additionally odd is that I have never seen any reports with Surface’s account of the events. I believe he was called on to view the body (as part of an official jury) though I could be wrong.
I knew he died in his car but didn't know where. I wonder what jurisdiction could legally claim him. Is this one on his death certificate. I feel research coming on. Thanks for the cool yet sad video.
I think Oak Hill is the name of the cemetery where HANK is buried. I was there in 2013. Most beautiful grave I've ever seen. Took a little red dirt home from a nearby dirt wall. And if you go to his grave you should go to the Hank Williams museum just up the rd.
@@Remembering-rq6si no you can tell he is telling the truth. On these videos of country singers and dancers etc--alot of the comments are filled with friends and relatives and grandsons whatever. The guy is telling the truth.
His driver found Hank Williams Sr unresponsive at a gas station in Oak Hill. My father-in-law worked at the gas station and was on duty when Hanks car pulled in and then driver discovered Hank Sr passed away.
I knew a country singer by the name of Hank Rivers (The singing Soldier) who did shows in Canada with Hank Williams in his earlier years . He told me that as well as he knew Hank he said he never and I quote "I never saw that man eat"
It was New Year's Eve. He was on his way to Canton, Ohio to do a concert. That was interesting. I knew he died in Oak Hill, but I didn't know exactly where or why his chauffeur stopped there.
I've seen the '52 Cadillac. In the late '40s my parents would drive the fifty-odd miles east of here to Shreveport to see Hank perform on the Louisiana Hayride. 🎸🎻🤠
Interesting. Love, how it says in faded letters on the Drive-In Sign "Hanks Last Stop". While watching this I was sure that I went to a Skyline drive-in as a kid in NSW Australia. Turns out there was a chain of them. Interestingly the first one opened 18th of Feb 1954 just over a year after Hanks death. I wonder if this and any bearing on the name they chose for the American style Drive-ins. Got to be more than a coincidence. Keep up the great work.
Love your vids!! But I gotta say Hank was discovered dead at Glen Burdettes Pure oil station in Oak Hill. The station has been torn down in the last few years.
no you are wrong. The place in the video is the place where he was first documented and seen dead by another person. The actual death could have taken place at any of the stations along the way. The video is accurate as to the place of death and its well known they cannot document where he exactly died--thus the video is correct as can be known The last words were in Bristol "no i dont no fucking hamburger"
it is rumor here in knoxville that he died here. he left the andrew johnson hotel downtown and it was said he was dead when they put him into the car. They say you can still see his ghost walking in front of the old hotel.
Janis Darlene don’t listen to that kind of talk. It’s crap and will cause brain rot between your ears. U know there aren’t any such things as ghosts. Believing that kind of thing will cause cobwebs in ur brain.
You should go there during snowy season. Been there, done that. When I went to West Virginia around January 2016, it felt like a dream to me. One morning there I walked outside and saw that everything was covered in white. And there were still snow flurries falling, too.
I wish people here in the U.S. would respect old buildings like they do in Europe. Unfortunately, they usually are trashed by others instead of being left alone.
Leonard Cohen: "I said to Hank Williams, "How lonely does it get?" Hank Williams hasn't answered yet, but I hear him coughing, all night long, and I keep paying my rent every day in the Tower of Song
Been drunk there more times than I can count. My dad lived in that bar and most of my kin have shut her down at 3 am. Toneys, drivers and Evans. He was found dead there.
since rigor mortis doesn't set in for 2 hours, and then it spreads from face on down, I would guess that it had been at least 3 to 5 hours that he had actually been dead
I would be remiss if I didn't add my own two cents. I live in Alabama and have visited Hank/Audrey's graves and the Hank Williams Museum, as well as Hanks' boyhood home in Georgiana, Al, several times. Just finished reading Lycrecia's book, "Still in Love With You: The Story of Hank & Audrey Williams", which I recommend strongly. Actually, Hank's driver was stopped, during the early hours of January 1st, for speeding. The state trooper, who stopped him, noted that Hank appeared to be dead already. There also was a soldier in the back, with Hank, which has given rise to theories that Hank was murdered. The soldier's identity is lost to time, as, apparently, Charles Carr, the driver, didn't know or didn't reveal his name. The journey began in Montgomery, Alabama. They stopped briefly in Ft. Payne, Alabama (home of the country group, Alabama), then proceeded by car. There were problems, due to the weather, and spent the night at the Andrew Johnson Hotel, in Tennessee. When they prepared to leave, Carr and the hotel attendants dressed Hank and noted that he appeared stiff, although he uttered a few sounds as he was loaded into the car's back seat. So, it's been argued that, in fact, Hank died at the hotel and that his death was only certified, in West Virginia. Still doesn't remove the fan appeal of this location. One thing more, the autopsy reportedly found evidence of alcohol, but no narcotics in Hank's system. This may be due, though, to the relative crudeness of the tests at that time and, also, to the fact that Hank may have been dead so long that any narcotics had degraded and no longer were detectable.
Question, if driver stopped at Skyline and asked Hank if he wanted anything, and Hand responded "No", how did driver come back out and find rigor had already set in?
He was a whiny singing s.o.b., but he sure was a legend! And I don't even LIKE any country music. But still, you can't deny a legend when you see one, no matter their craft!
They stored his car in gas station in oakhill across from library where at the library there is a small monument. Sad they tore the garage down where they stored his car. Skyline still there. Was for sale awhile back
I'm confused.Thats nothing new.But if he had a driver with him and they stopped ,presuming the driver went in to get food, how could he have been' found' as if he'd been dead a few days?Had the driver abandoned him?Did they ever say what he died of?
It is amazing. You would think that out of all the multi-millionare country singers in Nashville. not one has the balls to contribute to at least a memorial plaque.
Roy Jiminez I agree but you have to remember that it’s nowadays country and Zack Brown band in people like that don’t see the significance of Hank Williams because they don’t realize that they’re making horrible country Hank Williams sr came from the time when it was real country music

The real country musicians with enough respect to do something like that are long gone. Country music is ruined and many singers are just puppets. Great idea though. Maybe the township should spring for it. The tax payer is who pays for these things these days.

There should be a monument there.
agreed...
the place is for sale now, there is a memorial plaque on mainstreet in oak hill, but the drive in is just abandoned and for sale.
Hank III Should get it for the memory of his grandad
you would memorialize a drunken drug addict who probably died of his addictions? I know he got popular in the 50s but really think about it.

@@Remembering-rq6si no you can tell he is telling the truth. On these videos of country singers and dancers etc--alot of the comments are filled with friends and relatives and grandsons whatever. The guy is telling the truth.
@@jaysilverheals4445 you could be telling the absolute gospel truth, and people still aren't going to believe you.
This was so much better than I Saw The Light
His driver found Hank Williams Sr unresponsive at a gas station in Oak Hill. My father-in-law worked at the gas station and was on duty when Hanks car pulled in and then driver discovered Hank Sr passed away.
I knew a country singer by the name of Hank Rivers (The singing Soldier) who did shows in Canada with Hank Williams in his earlier years . He told me that as well as he knew Hank he said he never and I quote "I never saw that man eat"
Paul Henry Dallaire
Hank W. was one skinny guy.
Thanks for sharing.
Keep up the great work.
there's a tear in my beer kuz I'm crying for u here
you
were on my lonely mind
nice vid dan keep it up.
It's a miracle that building is still standing. They ought to do a little something with it.
The Greatest country singer ever. There is no country music singer's today.
You guys are visiting close to me. I love it when RUclipsrs film in my state.
There's a Skyline Drive, & Hilltop Drive Intersection, in Taylors, SC... interesting.
Love the old buildings and the history
These videos are so interesting.
hank williams is my hero i listen every day to his music grtz henk holtkamp from holland😊👌
Cool very short video! ;-)
Love your vids!! But I gotta say Hank was discovered dead at Glen Burdettes Pure oil station in Oak Hill. The station has been torn down in the last few years.
north louisiana model shop
no you are wrong.
@@billbrown8006 but it IS known he was cold stiff dead at skyline-so he was long dead
That guy scared me when you spun the camera around... Almost as creepy as hank being found dead there!!!!!😱😱
Is he in all your vids??? lol😵😵
it is rumor here in knoxville that he died here. he left the andrew johnson hotel downtown and it was said he was dead when they put him into the car. They say you can still see his ghost walking in front of the old hotel.
Janis Darlene don’t listen to that kind of talk. It’s crap and will cause brain rot between your ears. U know there aren’t any such things as ghosts. Believing that kind of thing will cause cobwebs in ur brain.
Very interesting and yet sad ☹️
He'd been dead some time. The last time they talked to him was in Bristol, VA at the Burger Bar (been there for decades, still is today).
greatest ever
You should go there during snowy season. Been there, done that. When I went to West Virginia around January 2016, it felt like a dream to me. One morning there I walked outside and saw that everything was covered in white. And there were still snow flurries falling, too.
Ive been to where James Dean crashed same kind of thing :)
Went to Nashville a few years ago and believe it or not hank Williams is still the biggest attraction in Nashville other than the opry,
I wish people here in the U.S. would respect old buildings like they do in Europe. Unfortunately, they usually are trashed by others instead of being left alone.
Your buddy frightened me.
Leonard Cohen: "I said to Hank Williams, "How lonely does it get?"
Hank Williams hasn't answered yet, but I hear him coughing, all night long,
and I keep paying my rent every day in the Tower of Song
Been drunk there more times than I can count. My dad lived in that bar and most of my kin have shut her down at 3 am. Toneys, drivers and Evans. He was found dead there.
Hank's Last Ride (Take a listen) soundcloud.com/hillipsand/the-last-ride-of-hank-williams
I would like to drive by that place on my vacation. What road is that on?
Cool
since rigor mortis doesn't set in for 2 hours, and then it spreads from face on down, I would guess that it had been at least 3 to 5 hours that he had actually been dead
I'm going to West Virginia this month for a paranormal investigation....
dan who was the guy in the blue hoodie?
Godspeed to you, Mr. Williams!
A sad day a country legend that should have lived life longer back when country was country
I spent the night on blue ridge mountains on 2nd January 1982 but i did nt know old Hand died near there ! George Stevenson (Somerset )
Not a tourist attraction but a place in music history for sure, if that place is accurate.
It doesn't look like it's probably changed much since 1953
Rip Hank
dan who was the guy in the blue hoodie?
Mike Hofer Igor
Question, if driver stopped at Skyline and asked Hank if he wanted anything, and Hand responded "No", how did driver come back out and find rigor had already set in?
that never happened he was dead at skyline.
Well then, Hank Williams "crossed the Skyline" for real. RIP.
He was a whiny singing s.o.b., but he sure was a legend! And I don't even LIKE any country music. But still, you can't deny a legend when you see one, no matter their craft!
OMG!!! 😱 WTF?!?
please take me with you guys
They stored his car in gas station in oakhill across from library where at the library there is a small monument. Sad they tore the garage down where they stored his car. Skyline still there. Was for sale awhile back
Unintentional fright at 1:50 with the appearance of a hooded giggling Igor. :- l
That guy is blazed
I'm confused.Thats nothing new.But if he had a driver with him and they stopped ,presuming the driver went in to get food, how could he have been' found' as if he'd been dead a few days?Had the driver abandoned him?Did they ever say what he died of?
a ichy big toe go find out
He forgot to blink his lights for service. Died waiting.
When I first read the title I thought it said deer
I've been in the tunnel of paris, where princess Diana died...
