I halfway fixed mine, but I don't recommend attempting it unless you are really handy and have a lot of time. I didn't make a video, but here's what I did. 1. Remove the mechanism. This requires prying off two plastic rivets (you'll need rivets to reassemble). You also have to remove a retaining clip from the rod that goes across the top, which controls the angle of the shades. Slide the rod out of the way. 2. Carefully pry the mechanism open. The top and bottom snap together. (I'm assuming your spring has lost tension like mine had). Pay careful attention to the routing of the string and the placement of the pulleys. I put mine back together incorrectly a couple of times. 3. Now, the hardest part is re-tensioning the spring. I tried to wind it like a cassette tape at first, but that didn't work. It should make more of figure-8 shape. Set the string pulleys aside. Clamp the base to a table. Clip the end of the spring into the first geared pulley. The end of my spring was broken. It should have a sort of T-shape on the end of the metal strip. I had to cut the spring with shears to recreate this shape. I ended up shortening the spring due to a couple of failed attempts, which is why this wasn't a complete success. Wearing heavy gloves, with just the spring pulleys in place on the base, twist the spring onto the geared pulley to build up tension. This is slow and difficult. Be careful to stop before the end of the spring comes loose from the spool. I then put a clamp on this to hold it in place. 4. Fully unwind the string pulleys and put them back on the base, routing the string around the metal pins. One string is longer because it has further to go across the top. Lot's of opportunity for this order/routing to go wrong. 5. Before reassembling, look at the top plate of the mechanism. There are two holes above one of the string pulleys. These holes are for a retaining pin. I made one by bending a nail into a U-shape. With your retaining clip ready, unclamp the spring, holding the sides tightly, and pop the top plate back on. Before letting go of the spring, put in the retaining pin. 6. If you've made it this far, it's fairly easy to reassemble. I used aluminum rivets to reattach the mechanism. I routed the string back through the holes in the top with a paper clip. Then, I laced the string through the blinds, alternating which side of the ladder string I was on every four slats. Use the little plastic cap to hold the sting on the bottom. Once both strings are secure, remove the retaining pin. Slide the rod back though the top and replace its clip. Hang the blinds. I had to adjust the length of the strings once in place to get them level. Now you should be able to raise and lower your blinds, but mine will only raise half way, which I assume is because I shortened the spring. Still, I'm pretty proud of this amount of success. Trial and error over a period of three days.

Depending on how much you shortened your spring, you just may have put too little tension on the spring gear before you put it back in the mechanism box. If they only go up half way, there might not be enough juice left in the spring for it to pull them the rest of the way up. I don't know the exact number of turns you need to properly load the spring (helps to mark a dot on the spring gear before you start loading the spring onto it) but I found 4-6 full revolutions worked well for my blinds

So today i decided to cut the tension cords and did just as the video says not too . Yes it is totally possible if you have the same blind untouched to reference. It takes alot of patience and nimble fingers depending on the cord loops. It is tedious. You must restring it through the proper holes and reguide it through every slat. You are basically having to rebuild it but is totally possible. I unfortunately did it on cordless ones and they will retract and bounce around in the top system. If you have similar blinds just back track from the bottom to the top how it needs to br steung. Make sure to interloop the tension string in and out of the slat strings about every 5 slats or so. It will keep the slat strings from wandering. Just weave it along dont loop or tue in any way. Should hang freely. Maybe will have to mess up another to make a tutorial video. Didnt think to do so and an very sorry. Hopefully this helps someone 😢

The tension string can be replaced. Search for how to replace string in cordless blinds.

DO NOT WATCH THE HOME DEPOT VIDEO ENTITLED: How to Shorten Wood and Faux Wood Window Blinds | The Home Depot. The blinds in that video look identical to the cordless ones. The difference is when you cut the strings in the middle of the blinds and nudge the blinds up, all three cords get sucked into the string tension box thing in the top rail. These use a similar pull string mechanism that your favorite talking pull string toy had.
Thanks for posting this video. Wish I would've come across it before I watched the Home Depot one.

I haven’t seen that video, but I appreciate the warning! I’d bet that many of the people looking for videos on this topic have already cut the middle string by mistake. Thanks for watching and commenting!

UPDATE: When I went to return the set of blinds that were ruined, I was nervous. My plan was to have another set of blinds cut and exchange them. In typical Home Depot fashion, I was told by three people that someone will come to help me cut the new set of blinds. After 40 minutes of waiting around I angrily packed up the blinds and decided I would cut them myself at home. When I got to the self check-out line, one of the kids that said someone would help me asked if I was helped. I said no and the kid said the person was in the lumber area. Confused, I asked, "was I supposed to go get them?" The kid just stared at me.
I was just about to purchase the uncut set of blinds, but that horrible customer service rage that Home Depot is famous for set in and I left the blinds at the register and stormed out. On the way out, there were stacks of the orange buckets by the exit. The stacks were 8-10' high. Inspired by the Will Smith slapping Chris Rock scene I slapped the hell out of a stack, which fell into another stack and there must've been about twenty buckets all over the floor. It was loud, a lady screamed, "Oh my god!"
I stepped over the buckets, turned and looked at the kid in the self checkout line, gave him the middle finger and said, "Whoops! Sorry you have to work now." Left the store and returned the blinds at a different Home Depot.
Sorry for the long story, but I know this story would resonate with anyone that has ever shopped at Home Depot.

Thank you for the update! Our local Home Depot store has better customer service than what you experienced. I’m glad you were able to get another set of blinds.
