The design by General John J. Thompson was complicated yet reliable. It utilized the Blish Lock to delay the opening of the bolt when fired which made the M1928 Thompson a delayed blowback firearm.

USA, “We need a sub machine gun for our army and marines.”
Gangsters, “Hold on, I got this.”
It was actually designed with the motto, "On the side of law and order" and primarily marketed as the ultimate home-defense weapon - plus for military and police. Thompson felt quite terrible that it got the reputation you show here. People hated him for using it to set a car on fire like a YT video, because it was after WW1. Violence? Icky!

That’s only because this was a time when booze was illegal but full-auto submachine guns only ran ya $200 (or $3,500 for today)
@@olliegoria if money cost like that today 🤔💰
@@user-nu9im9zc8s Yeah, but then our stimulus checks be like $95
Mate you know the gangsters never made them or licensed them right ? Europa, Asia and the entire world was in totalen krieg with the USA 2 seconds away from its worst and darkest day in its history up to that point. Just like the Ruski & Ukraineski today they don't care where they get guns from they need them.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH GOT YOU IM SO SMART SMRT SMRT SMRT. You clearly have never seen Rick & Morty hmm ?

The real question: Grease Gun or Thompson?
USA, “I need a sub-machine gun for my army.”
1920s gangsters, “Just copy my homework.”
USA, “Thanks a bunch. I will change it sightly.”

What small arms do you want to see next?
Further Thompson variants that will get videos:
M1921 The first production of the Thompson, will go into detail in loading, use by gangster etc
M1 / M1A1 Later variant, famous in WW2
Also an interesting fact. They changed the look of the M1928A1 to not look like the original M1928 because that gun was associated with the maffia, and thus not a good look for your soldiers.
Is that why the handle for the bolt was move from the top to the right side?
Nicholas No, the bolt om the M1A1 was on the right side as they changed the blish lock to a simple blowback mechanism
yeah i've read something about that somewhere, they didnt want to equip the army with mafia guns
Wasn't that also a common pick for police officers before the war too?
The real reason they changed the Thomson was financial it was cheaper to produce that way

Me i love history!
MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Most beautiful smg ever made in my opinion. When you take a close look at it, you really see that it’s a work of art in design.
Too true!

First of all that's true
Second of all that's disgusting
Agent New York the one and only Chicago typewriter
"The Chicago Typewriter" I love that nickname.
Firing this thing for the first time completely stunned me. The weight absorbs so much of the recoil that you can accurately fire it with next to no experience!
I love the the Thompson 👍🏼
Lend Lease?
Simple History what?
I think he means did the Americans lend you one, Stalin.
Hoàng Nguyên Did they also send small arms to the soviets? I only remember learning that they sent lots of trucks, other transport and supplies.
I thought you loved the PPsh and the PPS-40
I wish I could have a Thompson sub machine gun
You can
A semiautomatic one but you still can.
Bill Mcsill uhh you can have a fullauto as long as it was registered before May 19, 1986. Runs about $25,000 USD for a plain crappy one and takes about a year to do the background check.
If we’re talking the USA, of course. Also, Obligatory “repeal Hughes”
Semi or full automatic? Semi-auto versions are available for relatively decent prices. Full-autos cost a crap load of cash, as much as a new car practically.
Another great video as always, keep it up man!
Did you just assume their gender lmao
M1 Garand?
Please...
The GarandUsingMedic they aready did

Can you do the M1 Garand?

Best youtube channel ever always watching for your new videos!
Hey thanks for making such good history video's apprecieate of!
24 Axis Generals disliked this video.
Another great video. Short but good at the same time.
To simple history I enjoy your videos I have learnt a lot from your videos
Why did that old Thompson have a handle at the front and a round mag?
The round/drum mag was made so the people that use it shoot for longer periods without needing to reload, the handle comes from the prototype, so they can control the recoil
Good quality as usual!
Possibly the one of the best and most iconic guns ever made
When I see it in use, it's very satasfying.
I wish you'd have went into a lil more detail about its service life, but decent video overall.
My favorite SMG all the time.
Man I love this channel
Wow a great video simple history.
I love your videos better than school :)
Yes it saw use throughout the war, but was later replaced by later models such as the M1 & M1A1 Thompson submachine guns. The 1928 was primarily used by the Marines though and the both M1 models were favored more by the army.

Why bother fighting when you could just join both side and them have their fun
This was a great, short video but it was not mentioned that the weapon was quite expensive to manufacture, and thus other submachine guns were sought out. The Brits liked the weapon (even Winston Churchill posed for an iconic picture with it) but they ended up developing their own STEN gun was much cheaper and easier to produce. It's all worth mentioning that although most submachine guns of the era were nine mm, the Thompson was one of the few that was chambered in the .45 ACP as mentioned in the video. Sgt. Saunders (Vic Morrow) from "Combat" always relied on his Thompson to save the day. Thanks Sarge!
Thank you!!
Love the channel and the Thompson like to have one
Awesome video
You should do a vid on the m1a1 Thompson. Where they changed the sights, muzzle, barrel, and the charging handle
It's about darn time!
Eugene Stoner: "The AR-15 is the all American gun!"
Gen. John Thompson: "Hold my beer."
I like this guys voice better than all the other ones
I like these weapon history vids
Could you do the Sten gun next

wasnt there a prototype version of this in world war 1? And this is my all time favorite smg
+Captain23rd Gaming it has a great name
Is it the herligeil 1915
The prototype version, called the Annihilator-1 was finished just as the war ended, it was never deployed to troops.
Captain23rd Gaming Yes, the Thompson annihiliator and persuader were the prototypes of a "trench broom". Actually Thompson itself invented the term submachinegun
yes there was a prototype however by the time it arrived on base WW1 was already over and never saw field use
One of my favorites
Love this
I have been very curious about more specific details about its use like which soldiers would get it besides airborne and how much ammo they'd get how many issued per unit stuff like that
Do the Romanian Army in WW1/2(just one of them,or even both if you want),please!I really like the videos and the quality you deliver
I thought you were going to go a just little further and describe how the Thompson ultimately became the M1A1 variation, which was perhaps the most widely used (also cheapest, fastest to produce,) model, and went on to serve in Korea and Vietnam after WWII!
So what exactly is the difference between this Thompson and the variant that has the bolt and charging handle on the side as opposed to the top?
Definitely would like to see a video dedicated to the Australian Forces in the Vietnam War.
Please make a video about the battle of Berlin.
Between WWI and WWII. They had a hard time finding buyers for the gun. They actually took out ads describing the "Tommy." As the new ranch rife.
This could help my social studies later in around March or April.
The upgrade part while it was being repaired,it was a good idea that was predicted almost.
Nice video 👍👍👍
The Thompson was never issued in the Pacific during WWII by the Marine Corps even though many found their way there. The Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard used Reisinng M50 SMGs because they were lighter, cost $62 compared to the Thompson's $200 to manufacture and Thompson was unable to meet the demand.
Awesome!!
America: “Can i copy your homework?”
1920s gangsters: “sure, just make it look a little different.”
America: “okay”
Battle of the Seelow Heights? I'd love to see that one.
Can you do battle in Surabaya in Indonesia?
I can’t wait till the Ww2 german Fallschirmjaeger video comes out
Could you guys please do a video on the FG-42, you guys are great by the way!
I just looove this weapon
Personally I liked the M1928 more. I also feel as though the vertical grip would have helped more with sustained fire. That said, I definitely plan to buy an Auto Ordnance repro someday since I don't have 100,000 to throw on an Original and it don't look like the ATF will allow more to be built in a full-auto capable manner.
Apart from the Bazooka I never used American weapons in Revenfield just German and Russian but hearing the sound of the Thompson I feel like giving it a try.
Amazing weapon
M1928A1 such a big name
Why did they make later on the Grease gun? Was it better or what?
Beautiful firearm
Hey, just saw your Winter War video and I was wondering can you do a video about the Finnish Lotta Svärd?
You forgot to mention the barrel was shortened and it was called the m1942 in ww2 the barrel was changed as well they took the compensator off and the cooling rivets

Would you guys ever talk about the USMC, or even the Green Beret, or even the American 1st Infantry?
You guys need to do a video of the Garand.

Im always subscribe and i click the bell i just got notified
Holy s*** that's damn cold out Thompson machine gun
It suffered from a common issue among early SMGs, ridiculous muzzle climb. The bore axis sat miles above the stock's contact point.
The real 1928A1 didn’t have a forgrip but i like the gun so much 👍🏻
Did the soldiers use Thompsons with a drum Magazine in ww2 or only with box magazines?
My favorite weapon
You should do the ppsh 41 next

awesome video and i wanted to suggest. if you are going to keep doing interwar stuff. maybe do the Lithuanian army?
I want one!
germany: eyy we have a mp 40 that holds 32 rounds per mag
USA: eyy we got a m1928 Thompson that can hold 20 to 100 rounds per mag
Why did you not mention that it also has a semi automatic mode? The selector is on the left side of the receiver.
Simple History I was hoping if you make a video on the M1 garand
