This comparison really shows the importance of a good score. The dialogue is nearly the same, albeit a few lines are changed, but the music really makes these two stand apart. In the sub there's so much gravity to the encounter and it feels like a true fight, not to mention the nod to the original 1980s series in the scene where Atom remembers Dr. Temna. The dub just had the same song throughout the whole scene, pretty much. Which brings me to another point, and that's quiet moments. Man, Astro sounds so angry in the english dub when he says. "Doctor Tenma." That sounds so odd, why would he be angry? I mean, it makes more sense in the original dub where it sounds more like he says the name because he suddenly remembers and now wonder what it means.
It is no exaggeration to say that the American dubbing, distribution, and marketing of Astro Boy is among the greatest tragedies of my childhood. I did not watch even a single episode at the time. Almost 20 years later, and we still can’t watch this series the way it was meant to be watched! Tezuka Productions needs to fire their international PR team.
What bugs me even more than the pointless cuts and change of music, was the cropping of the picture. The original Japanese version was released in 16:9 widescreen. The English dub was cropped down to standard 4:3. WHY?! How could that possibly be an improvement? It only leaves several scenes throughout the show looking awkwardly cut off.

That was an amazing touch, but in the dub they just keep the same droning track over it with no change! They just put that same techno drum shit over the fight with zero emotion over the whole scene instead of the dramatic score used in the original. The music stopping when he fires in the Japanese one makes it so much more dramatic too. The dub voices make such bizarre grunts and noises, and they found a way to pick literally the most annoying voice for Atom possible. He doesn't sound like a 9 year old boy, he sounds like my old English teacher chastising me for disrupting the class. Both the dubs Atom and Atlas can't scream with feeling at all so that's completely ruined. Atlas' Japanese voice actor is legit going insane in the booth, the dude is laughing maniacally and screaming like a madman, I love it. So yeah, dub complete stink all around, such a shit effort. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the writing in the English dub. All the actors sound fine too. The problem is just with the score and pacing of this scene. The Japanese version really let scenes sit and play out so you’d understand Astro’s feelings a little more. The score is also more haunting and melancholic to highlight Astro’s reluctance as well as the destruction Atlas is causing. There’s nothing horrifically wrong with the English dub’s pacing, but I certainly prefer the slower, more intense Japanese version of this scene.

I grew up with the dub when it used to be on 4Kids!/Fox Box- whatever it was called at the time, lol. It's actually a bit weird to watch the subs but still interesting none the less. Now that I'm older maybe I'll try the subbed version. :)
At first I felt cheated that all this time I've been watching a inferior dub just because they cut out heps of stuff from the original but hey man I grew up with this version and the voice acting for the most part is pretty good in my opinion so it's good enough for me too :) also the cheesy voice acting ads charm to it
I think you're giving it too much credit son while I do understand were you're coming from I'll admit I did got bored of it thinks to the dub version because how they mute all of the sound effects in the action scenes which they made them pretty lame
For me, I still like the sub better because of the music and voice acting. Plus, the dub cut out a lot of the more emotional heavy moments and replaced it with a bad joke or something. I will say though, it is pretty funny going back and watching the English version and seeing how badly they botched it up.
And you can cut down gold all you want, still gonna be gold. I would love if Sony released this in an uncut version. Dubbed, but with the only changes being the language and pop culture references (if necessary). Uncut DVDs do very well, so maybe if we all appealed to Sony they might do it. I know it's like a .5 chance, but still. And in the meantime I was thinking that the opening song and aspect ratio could still be restored by home editors.
People don't watch it in English dub.... They cut out alots of parts and I regret that I watched in Arabic and English I'm watching it in Japanese dub with English sub now
I'm glad i grew up watching dub, a language i can effing understand. People dissing the dub wouldn't even give this a try when they were children if it was only available in sub
There's only about 6 seconds cut from this sequence, the hugging portion. The rest is identical, save the aspect ratio and the referring to Tenma as 'creator' rather than 'father'. Though to be fair I think that plays better into Tenma's arc, as he may have created Astro, but Astro wouldn't consider him his father by any means. I still love this dub, and I would only like access to the original Japanese version for purposes of redubbing.
oof I know this is an extremely old comment, but I'd also like to point out that they cut a bit of the cat running away in english version Compare: 1:10 vs 4:41 I wonder why that was cut, so strange. As a kid, I was and still am a big Astro Boy fan and I like the Japanese version of the show much more the English version. They made a lot of pointless cuts, and changed the dialog and soundtrack dramatically throughout the entire show. Like they didn't want the English version to be emotional or have any emotional moments, which is so weird since those kinds of scenes can have a huge impact on and draw the viewer in. I wish they had kept it the same as the Japanese version, save for the dubbing of course. Since I did quite like the english voices and the voice acting was alright in my opinion.
Yep! I didn't have a 360 or PS3 when that game came out so when I saw it for 10 bucks at gamestop I figured I would get the 360 one and play it at my friends house. And I did, and I played the heck of it and got really far. Then the PC version came out and I was like FINALLY! So I bought it and I'm think I'm close to the end now. Yea the Meat Circus gets pretty hard at the end. Are you stuck on the part with the fire on the climbing platforms?
After much searching I can only conclude that there exist no English Subs for Astro Boy. From what I can tell its owners are more than touchy about it. All other versions seem easy to find, but not the 2003 version. Closest to a non-dubbed version I could find was on a site where it was Japanese with Chinese subtitles. fat load of good THAT was. If I could find RAWS maybe we could get a subber to do it.
Here in Brazil, the brazilian television bought the butchered american version to translate, so we brazilians also got that pile of junk. Not just that, but the DVDs are also junk without extras like the original japanese version.
I wouldn't say, since in overall sense, Atlas had a father called Dr. Ram or Don Tay and because Astro had a father, got another one and if Atlas joined his family, he'd be considered his adoptive brother if you look from his perspective. Also, Uran is his real sibling because she got parents once, and i wouldn't consider ochanomizu her real father because he doesn't always look after her. I have read about them. However, Kevin, you are also right about Atlas. He is Astro's real sibling(he got close with him a couple of times) but he would be considered adopted since he and Astro don't share the same father. Lovely video, btw.
i love the english dub voice. they sound good for acting. it shame the ep had to be edited. but i also love the english sound track as well.i thought his voice for astro sounded fine to me like a 11 year old. this show in my heart and love rewatching it dub or sub.

I only wish someone would put the Japanese version as well! If America did an uncut Astro Boy, would that be uploadable as well? Either way, we hope that the Japanese one would be subbed sometime (and make them unlisted, so it is safer to be not removed).
Both good in their one ways
Except the 4:3. Went to wrangle the guy who made that decision.
Subversion wins but I gotte say, Atlas dub voice fits the character too,
the voice actor of Atlas is the same voice actor of Kevin in "Ben 10 alien force" & "Ben 10 ultimate alien"
who knew the voice of beast boy from teen titans would be the dub voice for atlas
Other Fact :
Atlas is not a simple villain. Atlas is actually an antihero (just like Zero, Proto Man, Bass, etc. from MegaMan Series).
We hope to look at all episodes of Atlas's appearance from AstroBoy 2003 (from the beginning through middle to the final).
Sin duda alguna la versión japonesa gana por mucho, la elección musical como el doblaje es excelente
someone tell me where to find the Japanese version of astro boy, I want to watch it so badly!! it would be a big help i'll appreciate if you do it :)
+musicquatic92 Here: watch it at Kiss Anime (just google it)
Quynh Chi Nguyen OMG!! THANK YOU THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! YOUR EXISTENCE IS GRATEFUL!!!
Quynh Chi Nguyen BLESS
I didn't know there was a remake or a reboot of this show
maybe baby
this was in 2003
I just noticed that Atlas's voice is the same for Kyo Kusanagi from King of Fighters. Now i can only imagine NESTs Kyo talking instead of Atlas.
that sounds like peppy hare saying 'fallback - retreat!' at 3:40
You're very welcome. I didn't notice that all the episodes were there until my friend pointed out that they are just in a weird order. And yea, Psychonauts is one of my favorite games. I'm currently trying to beat Brutal Legend. Stuck on the Sea of Black Tears boss.
What A Redub Would Need
• The Original 16:9 Masters
• The Original Dub CAST (I Like their voices) [You Could Change Astro's Voice but the Original is good too]
• Don't Censor Anything. Astro boy has nothing that would really need censorship
• A Diskotek Blu-Ray Release (Physical>Digital)
Anyone know where to watch the japanese version anyway?
I watched it on animekisa
It's available on DVD.
@@blueclaw7420 thank you! I couldn’t find sub anywhere!
The japanese version's musics have more emotions... so it's damage, we don't feel the same with english version (and french version so) and japanese version for this scene é_è'
I grew up with the dub when it used to be on 4Kids!/Fox Box- whatever it was called at the time, lol. It's actually a bit weird to watch the subs but still interesting none the less. Now that I'm older maybe I'll try the subbed version. :)
"NOT A CHARGE SHOT!"
@@raphaelbrown6314 im not your son daddy oh lol
For me, I still like the sub better because of the music and voice acting. Plus, the dub cut out a lot of the more emotional heavy moments and replaced it with a bad joke or something. I will say though, it is pretty funny going back and watching the English version and seeing how badly they botched it up.
I'd say the Japanese version is better overall. But I really like who they chose for the English version for Tenma.
I had found a site that had the Japanese version with English subtitles, but now it's different and the subtitles arnt in English any more...
still waiting for an English release of the Japanese version...
we need a new dub of this
And you can cut down gold all you want, still gonna be gold.
Don't forget the option for Japanese with subtitles, that's how I like my anime.
anyone know the music playing at 6:00 cause i really wanna hear that on repeat so much
3:03 悪いアトラス......
6:24 Poor Atlas...
I would save him...
Why do americans have to put crappy soundtrack over everything?
There's only about 6 seconds cut from this sequence, the hugging portion. The rest is identical, save the aspect ratio and the referring to Tenma as 'creator' rather than 'father'. Though to be fair I think that plays better into Tenma's arc, as he may have created Astro, but Astro wouldn't consider him his father by any means.
I still love this dub, and I would only like access to the original Japanese version for purposes of redubbing.
oof I know this is an extremely old comment, but I'd also like to point out that they cut a bit of the cat running away in english version
Compare:
1:10 vs 4:41
I wonder why that was cut, so strange.
I wish Greg Cipes will voice Megaman (Original).
He's more fit for OG Bass
Many scenes are taken out of the English version. The Japanese version is much better. It feels more complete though I watch it without subtitles.
GREG CIPES!? IS THAT YOU!?
Here in Brazil, the brazilian television bought the butchered american version to translate, so we brazilians also got that pile of junk.
Not just that, but the DVDs are also junk without extras like the original japanese version.
toshiootomo2nd I plan to learn Japanese, buy a region-free DVD player, and buy the Japanese DVDs. You should do the same.
The real problem with the dub is the exertion noises and yelling seem to be poorly directed.
What Atlas said was true, he is Astro Boy's real sibling and not Uran.
Dr. Tenma created both Astro and Atlas. Dr. O'shay/Ochanomizu reprogrammed him.
Atlas' real dad is President Tokugawa. He is loosely based on Tokugawa's son, Daichi
I love the Japanese dub
Dexter vs kevin
Where can I find the music for this on RUclips?
Atlas reminds me of Megaman Robot Villains. His design is almost a copy of them that he could easily fit in a Megaman Game.
briansivley2001 not the fact his voice sounds like an English dub megaman villain
Atlas has had many different versions throughout the original 1952-1968 manga and the 1963, 1980, and 2003 movie.
i love the english dub voice. they sound good for acting. it shame the ep had to be edited. but i also love the english sound track as well.i thought his voice for astro sounded fine to me like a 11 year old. this show in my heart and love rewatching it dub or sub.
I don't know dude the English version has a lot of problems and they pretty much made it least enjoyable especially with them muting the sound effects and unnecessary dialogue changes same with the scenes
Astro 😊
Has the entire show been dubbed? I've looked for it for it years ago but I never found the whole thing dubbed.
HOLY SHIT THE ENGLISH DUB IS AWFUL
+Mariner1712
Every single anime English dub is awful.
+dashnog gurren laggan bruh
+dashnog And Goku's voice... When subbed it ruined the entire anime.
PrincessClipClop yup
+dashnog That's objectively wrong.
It's unfortunate that Atom's never had a good dub. In the original one from 1963 he sounds like he's speaking through a fan, the 1980s' one had bad voice actors. And this one has scenes cut and music changed. The live action series hasn't even been dubbed.
Where can I find these episodes in the original Japanese dub? I want to watch them.
Cattani Sharielle
I've been wondering the same thing as well
You can watch it on KissAnime but I've heard the subs aren't very good :p
Quechi dammit
The Japanese DVDs, obviously.
