The debate over closing several Oakland schools has escalated from heated protests and hunger strikes to an act of vandalism. Da Lin reports. (2-20-22)
Blame your own community once again! I bet those schools being closed also coincidentally are low performing schools, low attendance, all free lunch, bad behavior, not enough parental involvement. I live in a rural area where most are under the poverty line and receive some sort of assistance and yet the local schools are amazing because of parents! The PTO fundraisers constantly. We just had a new track installed at our school all with the support and contributions of parents and the community. Stop pointing the finger at administration. Yes, school councils, board members, administrators, teachers, etc are widely mismanaging funds constantly at the expense of your children! However, if you can’t rely on them to do right by you, you better give it your all. If you’re not willing to do that as a parent, you have no right to speak on school closures. Contribute your time and engage, make the school a better, safer place where kids might actually have the opportunity to thrive. What’s the reading and math skill levels in CA? It’s pathetically low and sad for all that alleged education money.
All structures for government/medical tyranny and continuous CCP-aligned propaganda. Provide vouchers to parents and raze the public schools. I approve of what I write and convey...as I have knowledge.
Bay area has the best public schools in the country but mainly in Santa clara/San Mateo counties. Schools outside of silicon valley in the bay area are mostly horrible like the ones in oakland/east bay
Blaming impoverished people for the statistically consistent issues that come with being poor is dumb. We live in a time where we've been technologically capable of ending hunger, homelessness and much else for over a decade and we aren't doing it. The problem is top down. The economy and government are by the wealthy for the wealthy and until we take back control of our economy from them we'll continue to fall far behind our potential as a country.

Our family owned construction company has offices/yards in 3 cities across the Bay Area . Burlingame , San Carlos and San Jose . We moved our Burlingame and San Carlos crews down to our San Jose yard because we were losing money having two yard with so few workers . Doesn’t make sense to have schools with so few students . I totally agree and understand the decision to close and merge schools
There's too many students per teacher anyway. This is based on money not on need and until schools aren't run like a business anymore public school students will always get the s*** end.
I condemn these hot head people that want to protest at all hours into the late night and early morning. Also those that want to vandalize and commit harm to the school board members. You just hurt your cause more than making a difference.
do not result to name calling and accusing without proof and people have the right to protest lady hiding behind a fake name and fake picture I wonder what else is fake
It doesn't take a genius to figure out this was inevitable with these problems everywhere. The school board should all resign, give a middle finger to the protesters, and tell them to try to run that many schools with that little money themselves. When they inevitably fail to find the money and compromise the integrity of schools across the entire district they can bare the responsibility. There's no reason for the school board to hold onto that onus when it's not greed and just reality.
Keep voting democrat. I ask anyone from Oakland do they think this would have happened if the had a school board that was more concerned with teaching your children how to read and write versus teaching them how to be woke little socialist soldiers for the democrat party? Do they think a conservative school board would be in this situation?
I live in east Oakland where there are four elementary schools within walking distance (mile or so) and those schools are under enrolled because of low performance. It makes no financial sense to keep them open if community doesn’t want to send their kids to these schools…
Are the schools you’re talking about on the list to be closed? Also, the schools that are closing are not being closed due ‘community not wanting to send their kids to these schools’ - these were decisions by the OUSD superintendent - not the community. In my opinion, regardless of city, these type of short notice closures need to be discussed with the community, especially those who attend the schools set to be closed down - why? It’s a disservice Not to. These schools were given about two weeks notice halfway though the year - that sounds like mismanagement and last minute planning/decisions to me. School closures should have a decommission plan as opposed to two week notices and a couple of months prep time for parents to figure something out.
You haven't been here long enough if you think fremont is safer. Sorry, but you're just wrong. Dublin, Pleasanton, Livermore, San Ramon would be safer.
I wonder if they teach students how to smash and grab and vandalize in the CRT curriculum in the Oakland schools that closed? Probably better to close them if they do.
Seems like another mostly peaceful protest. At least that’s what you told business owners a couple of summers ago. Hard to feel bad for people who defended riots.
Yeah you should look into what you are saying. Black students receive more money per student then rural white schools. The problem is teachers and school unions who don’t teach they just indoctrinate children into the democrat voting plantation.

Every 2 years or so they come at Oakland with another proposal to close our flatland schools. Our kids are left having to get clear across Oakland through unsafe neighborhoods to get to another school. While I don't feel vandalism to a school board member's home is a good thing, I also do not feel that closing neighborhood schools attended by low income kids is the best thing either. Schools are not businesses. They are a public service. We all pay taxes to provide every child in Oakland a good public education. They close them down and later they move a charter school into that facility. Charters do not need to use credentialed teachers, can decide which kids to admit & do not have to comply to State law about curriculum. The community, parents, teachers and students wants their school to continue.
