5-YEAR EMPTIES ANALYSIS: How Much Makeup Did I Use Up From 2017-2021? 🗑️

  • I recently came to the realization that I've been documenting all of my beauty empties online for *5 years*! I wanted to do something with all that information, so in this video we're taking a look at the number of makeup empties in every category so that I can determine, on average, how many of each product I can use up in a year. I'll also be looking at the total value of my makeup empties and comparing that to the amount I spent each year.

I follow another RUclipsr who does a “beauty bank” system. Basically she’ll have a certain number in her bank to start with and that represents how many products she can buy for the year. If she uses up products during the year she can add credits to her beauty bank, and when she makes purchases it goes down. May help narrow the price difference between used and bought some 🤷🏼‍♀️

Great video. When I was younger I used to own so much crappy makeup for the sake of it! Specifically at one point owning 20 cheap lipsticks which all went to waste. Since about 2016 I have committed to having my makeup a streamlined and use-able amount. I typically own about 2 of each powder category now, 1 for the eye stuff, 2 for complexion, less than 5 palettes, and 9-10 lipsticks. Because I buy new makeup so infrequently, this has allowed me to own almost exclusively "higher end" products (mainly for the sturdier packaging). I'm 27 and I now have tons of favourites that I know I will finish and buy over and over. Nothing gets wasted, I get my cost-per-use, and that's the best feeling!
Edit: I made a point of using up my older lip products in 2020 as well! It was fun wearing a fancy red lipstick while baking sourdough bread. I think I think I used up 6 lip products that year!

I think keeping any track of ones beauty collection brings so much value and awareness. I started 2 different project pans in January and put myself on a no-buy for 2022, inspired by you and some other youtubers focused on concious consumerism/panning. I have now a pretty big spreadsheet with all of my makeup listed, plans for panning, prices etc. It’s so satisfying for the nerdy side of me to make those notes and track my usages 🤓

i already have a spread sheet for my makeup inventory and then for my makeup empties. NEVER thought about doing an average of the number of products i used up. i’ve been documenting my project panning on instagram since 2018 so i only have 4 whole years of data.

These kind of videos are always so interesting. I'm in the same boat as you, where I don't feel like a need strict rules but I also want to keep an eye on my collection/spending. I decided how much I want to spend overall in 2022, approx. $ a month. So I can watch it closely. If I go over I'm not bent up but I can pace myself & see closely where my money is going. Also just trying to really think through purchases. Ideally I would like to cut my beauty spending in half & use up what I spend ( makeup, skincare, bodycare).

I also used my lip products more during the pandemic, because I'm more likely to reapply when I stay home. Based on your numbers I think spending less money than you use up could be a good goal, I think Christina Chang did that last year (or maybe the year before). I think she didn't count repurchases in her spending.
Or you could just continue tracking those numbers, reflecting on them and changing goals throughout the year.
I've also seen a few people focus on increasing their pan percentage in their collection, which could also be a fun challenge.

With bronzers and blushes, a lot depends on the product itself, not so much on the weight. Loreal bronzer was the only bronzer I had and it took me almost three years to use it. after that I bought Milani bronzer in April 2021 and I already have a big pan, I think I will use it by April this year, and both bronzers have the same weight.😀
P.s. English Is not my first language, sorry for mistakes😀

I love this SO. MUCH. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes keeping spreadsheets! About the dollar amounts: I know as I've been really trying to curate my collection, I purchase fewer, higher-quality items - and half the time that means higher-end makeup, which of course will be reflected in the dollar amounts. (Don't get me wrong, I love Milani and e.l.f. and Essence!) Also, you had to replace a bunch of eyeshadow after Heidi got in that box - I'm sure that was at least $100!

These numbers are sooooo interesting. I'm not even sure I could go through a blush or a bronzer in a year which means in order to not have your collection stay the same size you really can't buy more than one per year!!! Eye opening for sure.

  • @sarahb5531

I loved this! I do think over the years you’ve branched out and tried brands that are more spendy. Even if the items are on sale, ABH and UD will be more than some elf and jordana (RIP 😢). So maybe the brands that make up your collection are skewing the numbers.
Either way, you are the most conscious consumer and so fun to watch!

The idea of setting goals like using up 1000$ of make up makes me feel weird because it seems so consumerist. When you have a large collection that you're trying to get through, sure, but then what? I think it's a lot healthier (for you and the earth) for that amount to be naturally lower. Unless you use all luxury, but I don't think that's the case for most of the channels who do these for example. Maybe that doesn't make much sense, but a large amount of empties to me isn't that much better that a large amount of new products purchased (unless you've already accumulated a large collection that you're using up of course). Anyway for the budget, you could just follow your spending and adjust if and when you need it without a goal set from the beginning? I'm trying something similar, because I'm horrible with setting rules, so I need the fluidity 😂

Loved this! I've stopped buying brow pencils because I found myself going through them very rapidly. I purchased the Nabla brow pomade and it has lasted me for 1.5 years so far. It hasn't dried out yet and I think it will get me through the entire year to come! Bronzers however are I different story. I think I go through two to three of those a year. 😅

I don’t think there’s any harm in sharing categories where you feel like you don’t want to buy as many products because it reflects what you’re feeling now but you don’t have to hold yourself to that for the whole year or have a strict budget/ low buy I feel like we are constantly changing our goals in all aspects not just our makeup collections. It could be more lighthearted like when people say these are brands they want to try and then when you look back on it did you even try those brands? So you could look back at like the halfway point and be like oh did I actually slow down on buying those things or where am I at with how much I’ve spent and how much I’ve used up? I feel like this video is really cool and if you continue to do it it could be fun to have like a check in during the middle of the year.

Hey! I'm wondering if no project is the project if you're someone who enjoys a good project. You just buy naturally and after let's say 4-6 months tally everything up at that point to see how you spend naturally and how that makes you feel. You could keep track each month/ as you go but i've found doing that influences how I spend (in a good way). So, if you're interested in what your natural spending habits are you can tally it at the end and report back on your findings.

This is my first year project panning and a no buy/low buy and i put myself on a no buy for particular items for 6 months and put a cap on my low buy products, however after I did a makeup inventory what I had in my low buy category I already have plenty of so will be interesting to see how I go during the year, at the present time I think for most products I wont allow myself to buy unless its a replacement of something i used.....except palettes I am on a no buy for 6 months but i think i will allow myself a capped number of palettes in the 2nd half of year

Very informative! I started keeping track of what I use up and my inventory as a whole last year. Interested to see how this evolves for myself. Instead of a low buy I set the rule of 24 purchases allowed (roughly 2/month) of makeup products in 2022. I feel like that is manageable to me without letting my collection grow too much and comparable to how much I emptied last year. It also makes me pause and question - do I want to use up one of my 24 spots on this? I’m not setting a spending limit because overall I don’t have an issue with that. I have a decent 50/50 combination of drugstore and higher end.

This was so interested to watch! I may have to start tracking my use ups. I really want to get back to a simple collection and only have one of the basics, one mascara, one black eyeliner, one eyeshadow primer, etc. then a just a couple of options for things such as foundations and blush. Eyeshadow is a whole other story, and we aren’t going there.
I do track my lip product use, and last year I used up 20 lip products! I’ve been tracking for the past five years, and I have used up 107 lip products! Don’t understand it. In a day or two I should finish up my second one for this year. I am starting to wonder is my husband secretly uses them.

I think the dollar amount used may just be due to the amount of products used by other creators. I see most use 50-60 products a year (if each of those is $10-$20 apiece a $1000 used a year is easily doable) and I fall in that category as well when I do my project pans. I finished 98 products and hit goals on another 10 in 2021 which I think is my best year so far. I think you likely rotate your makeup better than others that purely focus on project pan items. I definitely think you could meet goals like that but you'd like likely have to move to project pan only or larger project pans which given your content I doubt you'd do but it'd be interesting to try.

Love the video that was great content to look back over! Tbh you never know i would say maybe a slightly unpopular opinion here is give yourself a budget for one more year but dont necessarily go on no buys or low buys or put "rules" etc... if you dont want to just carry on as normal? I would say i think your budget could be $350 for this year, here me out you use up an average of like $260-270 of makeup a year being that you gotten a good bit of makeup last year about $900 worth and you said in certain areas (lip products,eye-shadow palettes, highlighters you dont wanna add too much more and i think most folks get to a place there still buying makeup but they already have what they want or they just have a large collection that way you can really tell were you lay in the makeup having/buying/using it also gives room if you do decide well i do like high end makeup or i want a couple new palettes this year i can get while also buying things you buy regularly(sponges, mascara, eyeliner) I also think its a good idea because giving your (channel) its lowest beauty budget its ever have can really decide a lot for the next year i did it as well i realize i really loved makeup but, i just use to buy it to buy it cause it was cheap makeup so i wasted money that way so than I tried to do the other thing and put on a small impossible budget mine was $100 and that was a mess) so now i put my yearly budget to $300 that way it now accounts for the fact i use concealer, face primer, setting spray, high-end palette, and a few extras without feeling like im going over but, not denying myself either)

I just noticed it, and the first time it looked to have an almost cartoon-ish smiling face but the second time I glanced at it (later on in the video) it looked to have a serene girl type face and I am just curious as to how crazy I might be.
