Every day I'm learning more and more about how humane China and it's people are and how inhumane the western leaders have become trying so hard to muddy China and it's people, the western leaders have actually become sadistic not just disgusting. I live in Australia and the poor excuse of leadership in this country is mindnumbing and in my sixty years living here have never seen Australia in this low state of affairs and racist views by the media and government towards Russia and China.

Here is a real story. My neighbours mom is over 90. She needs a full time nurse. Her full time nurse is around fifty. This full time nurse was once kidnapped and sold to a farmer in a remote area of China. By the time she was discovered and rescued she was over forty, facing the possibility of becoming homeless and jobless back in her home town. The local county government then took her under their care. She was first provided a free one bed room apartment. She probably got some training too to become a full time nurse for seniors. My neighbour’s mom pay her 5000 RMB per month out of her 9000 per month pension. The two became inseparable like sisters and spent more time in her one bed room apartment due to its closeness to the town centre.

I witnessed the reality, There was no life threatening, no gun-shoot, no robbery, no hungry people, no homeless… the gov helped poor people, building houses, roads and Wifi to their country side homes for free… Then I continued visited many cities in China. They built so many homes in the real estate boom that they can't even fill them. Building basic housing was never a problem. Of course, if the desire is to build large single family housing on its own plot of land in the suburbs, then it would be too expensive. There is no desire to build the type of housing that the homeless could actually afford in the US and I suppose Canada. And there is no infrastructure that allows them to move on their own at low cost. Once you become homeless and lose your assets, you are kind of screwed completely.

Homeless people in China are hidden from the public; they can be bussed up to 1000 miles away to the countryside or may be put into rehabilitation centres. There aren't fewer homeless people in China compared to Canada, and the only difference is a government that actively hides them from being seen.

There wasn't always mass homelessness in the US either. Modern mass homelessness was triggered in the 1980s when Reagan slashed housing assistance by 75-80%, part of his overall drive to remove money from social services and put it in the military, prisons, and police. This act immediately resulted in hundreds of thousands of Americans losing their homes and having to live on the streets, a situation that still persists in the US after over forty years. Before the 1980s, the only time the US experienced mass homelessness was for approximately ten years during the Great Depression of the 1930s, a situation solved by the serious social programs of Roosevelt's New Deal. By contrast, in today's US, there have been almost no moves to provide people with housing by restoring the social services Reagan cut, and the US public has become hostile toward the poor and homeless, frequently abusing and physically attacking them, assisted by police who steal their belongings, fine them, arrest them, and assault them.

THe westerners will never understand family value like Chinese people, reason is very simple. Most people that struggling will move back to village or back to its parents and start all over again. Chinese people values family and even relatives very high, even some of the relatives that in the west will not consider relatives any longer, in China people a close and will help you out. Its nothing to do with the government at all. When young people moving to big cities and trying it out, if he fail he will move back. If China have the same family values like in the west, China will also have lots of homeless people.

There are low income people in China but because there is no property tax they can keep living in their own house/apartment. 2. Habits of saving money, strong family bonds which can look after each other. If one loses job, families and friends will help find one. 3. For people having no children no relatives no ability to work anymore, they are given/certified the status of the “five guarantees family” (the aged, the infirm, old widows and orphans). They will be taken care of by the people's communes in five ways (food, clothing, medical care, housing and funeral expenses). There was a story from February 2022 about a 70+ years old homeless illegal Chinese immigrant in New York City called 刘玉生 , who abandoned his wife and children in Shanghai decades ago. He was targeted by some kind of NGO-like organization named "American Shanghai Association" as a news-worthy case for assistance. They somehow convinced the Chinese Consulate to issue this old man a Chinese passport. When he was flown back to Shanghai, his family refused to accept him back into their fold. He even tried to sue his family for proceeds from home relocation payment. So this old sick man again became another homeless case. Eventually it was Shanghai Public Housing for the Homeless that took him in. He became a burden to Shanghai. The NGO- "American Shanghai Association" people pat themselves on the back, break out the champagne, but Shanghai citizens were furious. Shanghai people wish he was left on the streets of New York City. Perhaps you can find out what happened to this man since then.

      Excuse me.
But every country sets its own poverty level. There is no international standard poverty level.
In the United States, a person living at the poverty level can afford to have their own private one-bedroom apartment, their own car, all new clothes whenever they need them, plenty of food, and two weeks of paid vacation every year. That is poverty in the United States.
I struggled in poverty all of my life here, lived homeless on the streets for 4 years, and it DOES make you stronger. (American STRENGTH)
I still live in the poverty of the United States. I am retired now. I own my own home and car and they are both paid for and I get a monthly (poverty level) retirement check from the government. I invest the excess money that I get from the government every month in my stock-market retirement account and am getting good returns on my investments.
      I am very happy here.

The sheer number of homeless people living on the street, often openly begging was a real eye-opener for Australians. There were always people sleeping on the sidewalk right outside our 5* conference hotels - unbelievable. And if we were walking by ourselves through the streets, we sometimes felt very unsafe, as people would start following us closely, asking for money, and engaging in threatening behavior. Again, something alien to us Australians. I know Australia has a homelessness problem, but not like that!

I could never have imagined a wealthy country like the United States of American having such and I was saddened as my heart reached out to them.
I have been back to the U.S. many times after and the situation has not improved although panhandlkers have been driven out of many major city airports especially those where tourists and arriving visitors frequent. It is really a very disheartening thing to see happen to a nation that prides itself as being the wealthiest in the world that the marginalized cannot be humanely looked after especially those with mental problems brought on by an over-stressed society that has onstantly been pressured not only in the high demands in employment circles but also from internal racial, political and communal strife, a state of wars and rumors of wars all the time with only Hollywood movies and drugs to provide any fantasy relief.

Overall, from what I observed and learned during my time in Sg is that if you did the basics required for being part of any citizenry like finish school, get a job, do your job and stay out of prison your chances of being homeless and destitute is nil.
This ofcause doesnt apply if your relationship breaks down or you are unfortunate to suffer chronic illness etc.
By and large, based on my experience working in different countries, the chances of you living an average middle income life is far more likely if you were from Sg as opposed to say Australia or Malaysia even where the elements of luck, parents financial means and choosing the right options when it comes to say what you pursued in tertiary education, the location you chose to live etc etc plays a big part.

That's great! BUT Singapore does not have to explain anything because SG is not demonised at the moment like China is by western politicians and media outlets. There is so much fake news, disinformation and misinformation about China in the west that it is great when someone like Andy discloses the truth and explains in detail to debunk all the garbage. I remember how the west used to demonize Singapore in the early days about SG being authoritarian, no freedom, blah blah blah!!!??? Yet you see how well Singapore has developed? The world needs a new world multilateral global order, not a hegemonic one based only on western so called values. The west represent a very small percentage of humankind!

You should mention about the land reform in China happened after the communists revolution. This guaranteed everyone born in the countryside (with a country side Hu Kou) to own a plot of land to farm and a place to stay (home). That’s the reason migrant worker can be sent back to hometown where there is shelter for them. Look into this.

Trip Bitten on RUclips also did a very insightful video on the homelessness topic in China. He also mentioned culture and how Chinese government provides state job to the poor, so they earn enough to stay sheltered. Not necessarily a glamorous life, but won’t go homeless.

Wanted to add that a lot of labor/blue collar/factory type of work in China includes housing, eg construction working, factory labor. I’ve even seen hairdressers work in places provide housing.

Here most of the refugees are defacto homeless, there are just not enough shelters, it is interesting where the refugees all came from, it is very odd that most of them all came from the same places where our troops been delivering freedom for the past decades.

While I am not the biggest fan of some practices the CPC government I do ack that what they have done to progress the country is nothing short of a miracle considering the hurdles overcome (corruption,, backwardness etc), to add to your story my family built a school in the rural part of Fujian province in the 1990, the school was made up of mainly granite blocks being the locally available and cheapest material at the time. After the earthquake which many of such housing collapsed the government did a revamp around early 2008 to have the school rebuilt to modern standards (concrete/rebar) in the event of another earthquake which goes to show the consideration made by the local provincial govts to ensure enhance safety standards of the local population.

@@ShaopengChen Lets not get carried away, in support of Andy I gave a positive example of their governance (and there are more) but there also many negatives ones I'm aware off. But the reality is there is no perfect government, all of them are constrained by the factors the country is dealt in.
As a personal choice I would not opt to stay in China but a more liberal society.

    • @ShaopengChen

@@Beowulfsg Then give some concrete examples of what they did not do well, instead of using some old formula "I'm not a fan of CCP...". Like, what kind of hurdle you've met, during the school construction?
Let's take the example of education, since your family did build a school (and that's wonderful). I supported over 60 students (especially those from poor rural areas) over the last 20 years, and for many of them, I paid for their tuition for the whole high school programs. I volunteered for many education funds and helped to raise quite a bit of money.
And here are some concrete examples I think the CCP did not do well: 1) Investments in education is not balanced, not enough resources invested in western parts of the countries. 2) Infrastructure is also heavy on the eastern side. 3) some industries could have been moved to western provinces instead of abroad, if the infrastructure investment was not lopsided. ...
We made suggestion during the political consultation process, we wrote letters to different ministries, to mayors, to party leadership, etc. One successful campaign we had was the suggestion to run city-wide campaign of hygiene, which had been picked up the health ministry to spread to other parts of the country. It's not always successful, but the leadership does listen.
Therefore, it would have been great to be specific with concrete examples. There's no perfect government, as you said, and no one has claimed that. But instead of using old stereotypical formulas (usually used by people who know nothing about the country and had not even set foot there once), it would be great to be specific about the problems. We all want to improve.
I have lived in Canada and USA for many years too. Those are as liberal as you can get, in what you meant by "more liberal society". I've also written letters, made suggestions, involved in communities, volunteered, etc, you know what? the politicians, at every level, just pay lip services. We campaigned to have water sanitation facilities for the "indian reserves" for years, and finally got one "successful" implementation for only one reserve just before an election. As soon as the election is over, they stopped the funding, and the facility is left rotting. When I said they only pay lip service, I can give you dozens and dozens of examples.
And don't get me rant on the stupid and cruel concept of "indian reserves", it's basically a slow-cooking genocide. But we could debate that for days.

@@ShaopengChen My issues stem more toward human rights, given the heavy top down approach lack of practical information going from the ground to higher up thus leading to situations like the extreme covid lockdown, mindless property expansion (debt) by the local province to meet targets, how the HK riots were managed, the nine dash line in the SCS, how the govt is so sensitive to any little criticism online (list goes on really).
I admire governments in the nordic region (say finland, norway) but they have large resources and low population. Singapore where I am from provides a more realistic balance though this govt have their own issues too.
End of day you wholeheartedly support your govt (CPC) and see room for improvements which I respect and applaud your personal endeavors to make a positive change and as I mentioned I admire where China is today considering where it was in 90s, however current today my views in entirety will not change unless maybe some actions from the CPC to peacefully work with Asean countries on the SCS issues as a start instead this passive aggressive cabbage tactics. To add I'm not a fan of the US government either but the enemy of my enemy is my friend hence all you see the likes of Philippine and Vietnam increasing their co-operation with them.
I emphasize not to get carried away, bringing such matters up would open a can of worms where people would scream disinformation and what not, it's not like we are going to have a bloody debate in the comments section. Pointless really
This would be my last post on the matter as not to tar the comments section of the channel, I suggest you take in the positive and negative views coming from an open community with a lighthearted approach, this is not the platform for an in depth. All the best
