  • I've been playing a bunch of Dragoon in the new extreme trials these past few days with the launch of Dawntrail in FFXIV! I'm loving it so far, but the bust feels even crazier than it did before somehow! These are just my first impressions and it'll take some time to adjust, but so far so good.

    This is the most fun i had with drg since HW, but i do agree with you that starcross feels really "eh" right now. i also feel the gap closer have way too much delay in animation lock after using it.

    I love DT dragoon so much...
    I never really cared about dragonsight, so that doesn't bother me.
    As i said in another comment i edited starcross, so that also doesn't bother me.
    The only thing i really don't like is high jump and mirage dive. They're literally just damaging ogcd's now without any tie to the jobs mechanics.

      not to disregard your feelings trust me I get you but jump was originally just that so it's really just back to what it was but faster now and the weird accidental drifting of mirage dive or overcapping mirage eyes I really don't miss and prefer just damage jump

    the range on star cross is so bad its the only "jump" that you have to be in melee range to press weird decision by the devs for sure

      Yea def agree with this , why is Rise of the Dragon a more satisfying button to press as a 92 skill than the lvl 100 skill lol

      yeah, i forgot to mention this. it's really frustrating and more apparent in dungeon pulls when you're trying to position for your line aoe's. Starcross range is not intuitive at all

      Yes, with a 3ylm range it's like they made it to be double weaved with diver but diver is too long of an animation to do that so it just feels clunky

      I was gonna comment the same thing, and I saw this. I agree that the range is abysmal for a Jump ability, if they gave it a Mirage Dive range and a beefier sound for it then I would love it. But the glaring issue is defiantly the range.

    I thought I would main MCH only but i kinda hard swapped to VPR so i can keep my full attention to mechanics since its so easy to optimize

      Mch and sam are my 2 main classes in this xpac. After playing mch a bit though I'm finding sam to be really underwhelming. Vip also feels outright weak but i haven't capped it yet.

    We’re gonna have to agree to disagree on that one. The less things you have to macro the better. Granted, if they made it auto tether the highest (or if you’re being big boss 2nd highest) DPS, I’d be down for having it back.

    I would even take Dragon Sight if they made into a Dance Partner-like skill where you'd apply it to a partner at the beginning of a Duty and then whenever you enter Life of the Dragon you and your partner get the buff for the duration.
    Also I know a lot of people are not feeling the removal of Eyes because it makes Mirage Dive (and High Jump by proxy) feel like nothing else but just damage buttons. They had a purpose they served in progressing us closer to our burst phase but now that we just get our burst every 60secs by just simply hitting Gierskogul, it takes away some of the fun of High Jump/Mirage Dive. So I wonder if a fix to that could be to revert DRG back to getting eyes through Mirage Dive, and then to remedy the issue of "how does DRG get to their burst early in the fight like everyone else?" just sorta combine Reaper's Arcane Circle secondary effect and Viper's Serpent's Ire, so that when Dragoon uses Battle Litany it grants them a free pass to Life of the Dragon. Not necessarily granting them two eyes because that could lead to overcapping and that seems like a situation that they're moving away from in DT, so just give us a state where its as if we have both eyes. That could then potentially lead to situations where we can do back-to-back Life of the Dragons, though. So idk, there might need to be further balancing in that case, potentially. I guess Dragoon could be the one DPS class allowed to suffer the dreaded overcap as a counter-balance to prevent double Life of the Dragon? idk

    5:45 I would love if you did a video on your hot bar set up for controller for this and the other jobs. I used some of the hot bars you had when you were going over all the jobs but I feel like an entire video on it would be cool!

      I usually just try to keep buttons close together in the order that you push them in. I don't give it too much more thought than that really. It's all just whatever you get used to

    I won't lie im kind of surprised that rise was attached to dragonfire dive and starcrossed was attached to stardiver. i would have liked it to be the other way around tbh since you are literally using a nidhogg ability and than you could invoke him with rise while you still kept dragonfire dive and did the starcrossed. also starcrossed at least to me just feels like such an unimpactful ability it terms of its affect and even just the sound behind it like if you are playing with dragoons you can hear all there big impactful capstones like stardivers scream, wyrmwind thrust, geirs and nastronds audios, and whatever other abilities that are dragoons capstones but starcrossed just doesnt hit right which is a bit sad.

    A big problem with why our burst feels so strict/clunky is strictly because of Life surge, it has to be before 2 gcds, and 1 of your ogcds cant be double weaved. It honestly shouldve been turned into a trait that makes full thrust auto crit or something, then the burst would feel less clunky since you can place any ogcd wherever you want, allowing leeway if the 2 minute is during a mechanic -it is for ex 1-.
    Another minor complaint is that because Mirage dive and High jump are linked, theres a slight CD locked to mirage dive that bugs me, this in tandem with the fact it doesnt do anything anymore except a little bit of extra damage makes it, and the 2 new ogcds all feel like the same button pretty much. I think it wouldve been cool if instead Stardiver extended LOTD by 10s and gave +1 nastrond or something idk- i like that it feels like HW dragoon and that feels in line with it.

      @@4SkippyRoo I’ve been using the same opener they have and then just try not to drift anything throughout the fight. It felt awkward at first since you have to move some stuff around but it’s been fine since I got used to it

    2 things:
    1) should’ve just removed the damage from the spineshatter dive
    2) dragonfire dive and Stardiver should leave a 10 second fire dot at the landing spot.

    doing the first 2 minutes in ex2 while trying to figure out the sword mechanic safe spot is honestly one of the hardest things ive ever done on this job which is pretty impressive lol

    So, I am a little late to the whole dragoon party, I was in Stormblood when Dawntrail came out. I legitimately unlocked dragon sight and the whole gauge a week before Dawntrail got released. Had to relearn what I learned and man. I miss spineshatter dive. It felt more like a dragoon than with the new wyvern charge that we got

    I welcome dragon sight removal it felt annoying to use and was part of the reason I started playing the job less and switched to monk, but with it's removal and dissatisfaction with the monk changes im back on dragoon as my go to melee

    Being a lazy controller user, I disliked Dragon Sight, a bit.
    But I'm definitely in agreement with everything else in this video.
    Shit, while I disliked using DS on controller, I was a fan of the tether.

    DT changes finally made me change mains from DRG to WAR (i played a lot for every type of content) but also drg feel clunky af to me now honestly feels so weird , I tried picto and its fun and amazing i am yet to try viper

    3:41 I've been playing since April (PC, mouse and keyboard), and and I've never been able to move inside a boss's target circle like that. Always had to cancel target, move in, and target again. Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong? Besides skill issue?

      The only thing I can think of is having auto target lock enabled. Normally activated manually with NUM5, this forces movement relative to the boss and prevents entering the hitbox. There is pretty much no reason to have that setting on.

      Can you elaborate? Do you mean to say you walk when going backwards?
      Check your Movement settings and perhaps change 'Standard' to 'Legacy'.

      @@MrBills5700 No, I have Legacy movement.
      I mean that my char stops moving forward at the edge of the boss targeting circle and will just move around the circle. If I want to move into the boss (say to avoid an aoe where the safe zone is in the boss hit box), I have to disengage.

      @@4NSW3RM3 Character configurations --> Control settings --> Target--> Automatically lock on target when initiating auto-attack. Turn that off and you can move freely near your target when you're melee range

    i honestly was wishing and hoping dragoon could become more playable for me in dawntrail but unfortunatly its worse the rotation is so bloody long but whats worse is the neck breaking speed like some people like my friend love this but for me it gives me fucking anxiety lol its like a boulder being slowly pushed off a steep hill slow at first then its going down at mach speed the window of burst is just too crazy for me and uncomfortable and i feel my eyes glued to the hotbar rather then fights. Hope this improves in the future

    New dragoon fits one one page of hotbars if you play on an mmo mouse which is a big plus for me. Before I had to use modifier keys for the single target rotation but now with removed abilities and combo buttons it all fits!!

    Starcross def feels underwhelming, especially for a level 100 skill. Like... come on! There are a few skills that are like that ngl, where they are completely lacking impact in terms of how they feel.

      Another one i think is really lame is Disesteem. It does have good screenshake but it's just another line aoe with weird and small vfx.
      Then you compare those to something like perfectio or primal ruination which feel like fucking nukes going off!

    The only real difference i felt is that AOE clearing is a little faster , other than that did not feel much changed.

I have been loving DT and I'm only on 94 MSQ, and its like I can't go anywhere without people going out of their way to tell me why I shouldn't like it or why its bad.       Let me preface this by saying im about to yap a bit, so if y'all dont feel like reading it all ill try to TL;DR at the end, but i would appreciate if you'd take the time to hear me and my reasoning out for my viewpoint here. reading it all will hopefully give y'all a bit of a clearer insight as to why i think that DT DRG is the sort of "spiritual return" of HW DRG.
      to me, its about the feeling that i get when im pressing through my rotation. it's pretty hectic during burst phases, especially during the 2 minute window. i have to put in a bit more thought than normal on the order i want to use my oGCDs in to make sure im not holding on to things like High Jump or Dragonfire, or also thinking of which two oGCDs i should double weave and when. its very engaging to me.
      when i played DRG in HW, it was the same sort of feeling that i get from DT DRG. of course the rotation was not as "static" compared to now, seeing as how sometimes you would delay popping Blood For Blood for a few GCDs so that you could get your power surged jump and an extra two geirskoguls inside of that BFB/Inner Release window for example. playing DT DRG does sorta give me this nostalgic feeling of having to think of what i press and when to press it like i mentioned earlier, which is why i am reminded of HW DRG.
      when DRG was changed in Stormblood with the addition of Mirage Dive eye stacks as well as Dragon Sight, it really killed the enjoyment of the class for me from day one. i know i'm sorta in the minority here on hating both of those class mechanics (i am also a known Heavy Thrust/Death's Design enjoyer), but needing to have up to 4-5 different Dragon Sight macros on me and more importantly the fact that, at the launch of Stormblood, you needed *four* Mirage Dive stacks to enter Life of the Dragon as well as the range of your Dragon Sight being absolutely abysmal, DRG felt extremely slow to start, clunky and unfun for me to play. Throughout SB they increased Dragon Sight's range and dropped Mirage Dive stacks from 4 to 3, but it still was not as fun to me as the high octane, high risk v reward that was HW DRG.
      Over the years they also made one of the main mechanics that i loved from HW DRG, maintaining Blood of The Dragon and pushing out as many Geirskoguls as possible (3 per minute), easier and easier to pull off until eventually in Endwalker they took out the need to maintain BoTD at all.
      *TL;DR:*
      To bring this back to how i think DT DRG is what i'd call the "spiritual return" of HW DRG; while the need to maintain BoTD is still gone, the removal of Dragon Sight and Mirage Dive eye stacks as well as the fact that Geirskogul instantly puts you into LoTD and LoTD has a passive damage buff which rewards skillful oGCD management during your LoTD window has made the class SIGNIFICANTLY more fast paced and and interesting to me, which reminds me of the same feeling i got with how exhilarating HW DRG was way back when during late 2015 - early 2017.
      if y'all took the time to read my whole yap, i appreciate it. the thing that i really value the most when i play FFXIV is how the job feels to play, and to me, i'm very happy that DT DRG has made DRG fun for me to play again.

    DRG hasn't felt like it flowed well after Stormblood. I completely stopped playing it then and never looked back. The rotation feels so janky.

    Love lv 100 dragoon. Only complaint is that high jump now feels like a filler skill bit everything else is quite satisfactory

    My only complaint with dragoon is why lance charge and geir are 2 different skils just combine them

    Sadly a lot of skills in general in the game feel bad because of how much impact they lack even though they look amazing. They said the reason they dont make more punchier sound effects is because of sound effect overload which imo is kind of a bs excuse considering ive played plenty of other mmos with punchier effect sounds and it wasnt a problem because the game would tone down other players sound effects.

    I’m glad they simplified a couple things without completely changing the job. I started playing DRG in PvP during Endwalker and I was convinced it would benefit from some streamlining. I still think they need to rip the Band-Aid off and let the 3 hit combos land on a single hotkey. That would free up space for some really unique new abilities for every job they give them some identity.

    That antivirus battle is so ridiculous for BLM. It feels like Dawntrail is fairly unforgiving for my class. If you don't know the battle back and forth, you are gonna be seriously underperforming

    problem with this game is..
    DRG for example has beautiful amazing animations.
    but with ALLLLL the content flying you don't see any of it unless you turn off others abilities. I'm getting to that point where I'm about to honestly just to enjoy my characters play

      I would definitely recommend this. I think most people play with limited effects tbh. I do as much as I can to keep the screen clear, even abbreviating player names and hiding damage numbers. It really helps in difficult content.

      yeah, I definitely recommend playing with party effects on limited. I accidentally left them all on one raid night and died to the first mech cause I couldnt see a thing

      You should really look into VFX mods then. Look at Papachins DRG mod. It's not a eye sore and doesn't hinder seeing mechanics at all.

    I will never understand why players don’t care much for immersion; cute bunny-ear cats wearing regular clothing while playing a massive damage-dealing murder machine like Dragoon, just never makes sense. My Dragoon LOOKS like pure violence; spiky Dragoon armour on a muscular beast is what it should look like. 😅
