      Dear God, please don't complain about lack of crits, they'll take it to mean you want consistent crits for Lionheart and remove No Mercy as the price for it. SAM paid that same price in the form of Kaiten.

      @@StriderZessei Agree to disagree. I liked twirling my sword before doing my big moves. I liked getting struck by lightning before doing my moves as DRK to feel stronk. Not everything needs to be strictly about numbers, job aesthetic and job fantasy is just as important.
      But that's just how I view it. If the twirling sword animation didn't appeal to you, I can see why you wouldn't think the same.

      @@armorparade mechanically speaking, yes, 100%. Having a kenki gauge to manage feels pointless when almost everything use the same amount.
      Aesthetically speaking, not exactly. Actually pressing a button before doing your big move feels good. Like a anime character cracking their knuckles before going in for a big dramatic punch. In my opinion, job fantasy and aesthetic is just as important as mechanic, you shouldn't have to sacrifice one for the other.
      Aesthetic can carry a job very far. Case in point: DRK despite getting worse and worse with every expac still have a number of die hard mains. Why? Cuz the aesthetic speak to them.

    Wait wait wait. I'm not sure if i'm tripping. I clicked on this video to learn about the all the tanks (Great video btw.) And the last clip where you're talking about DRK fighting the 4th boss in the raid the other DRK tank is me. That's my exact mog i was using and it's the same race. My character name would be N. E. too. I know this comment is sorta irrelevant but I just wasn't expecting to see myself when clicking to watch this video haha XD

      @@RinBanana Then it was me! I finished work late and did my roulettes and it put me there for normal raid. It was my 2nd time on the fight. Still learning so I died near the end haha. Great video & Thanks for the insight on which tank to consider levelling up next. I'm thinking WAR :)

      the problem is it WAS broke
      i loved old drk but it did have issues and it did need to grow.
      but they gave up on it and tore it limb from limb, expansion after expansion until it became the hollow shriveled up little thing it is now
      we lost everything, gave it to the other tanks, then they got new tools that do what ours do without any baggage, and for a while it was "well dark knight does damage! it's fine" but now we don't even have that advantage. we have nothing that the other three tanks do not do better in practice even if it looks like there's things we get on paper

    There's a misconception in the DRK section. DRK does not have less blood gauge than it did in EW, it actually gets more bloodspillers over the course of a fight than the EW version. Yes, you lost 20 gauge per minute due to the merging of blood weapon and delirium, but you also gained 50 gauge every 2 minutes because Living Shadow is now free.

    As a DRK main, yeah these changes just aren't great and it is probably the "least ideal" tank rn. But honestly the part that's going to be much worse than any actual in-game changes will be all the people online blowing it so far out of proportion that PF groups are going to start doing the baby whining and demanding you change jobs or leave because DRK does 3% less damage than other tanks, even though I would perform significantly better on it than anything else.
    Edit for clarification: Not referring to this video, Rinon usually has more level-headed takes that I really appreciate.

      I am a DRK main and I am PFing the tier with a couple friends. I remember at the beginning of EW for Asphodelos when people were excluding PLDs from PF groups because of all the hysteria online about their performance. Hoping there's not a repeat of that for PLD or DRK this time around.

      ​@@tetrahedron_in_spaceyou should be fine. Paladin was excluded because it's damage was really bad. Current Dark Knights Damage isn't the highest, but it's far from bad.

    i play all four tanks to an extent and was a tank main for *most* on Endwalker (Abyssos is a dark memory) and I have my own thoughts on each job after playing them a bunch:
    PLD: honestly, 800 DPS behind GNB right now is nowhere near as bad as it was in Endwalker, because the job was UNPLAYABLY bad until the rework (thanks 2 minute burst), but with higher damage numbers means 800 DPS is not as big of a difference as you would think. Sure, it's still a gap that i feel should be tightened up a bit for sure, but as it is now I still think Savage groups would pick it just because of how solid it is all around. The job feels pretty smooth to play but it does lean a bit too hard on "LETS GO GAMBLING!" (looking at you Blade of Honor), which i don't think is changing, but should still get some small buffs to fix that
    WAR: this job is overpowered full stop. With how much damage it does right now in the role, I'd argue it makes DRK almost completely *obsolete* in terms of what it brings. Consistent burst that feeds *exceptionally* well off of DRG/BRD/SCH, and additions to their burst that make it *actually* feel bursty (it didn't feel like that for me in EW), on top of so much on demand healing without losing damage makes them almost completely unkillable in *all* content, not just dungeons, though dungeons are a big outlier. Really it honestly feels like the job just does not have weaknesses, and the ones it may have are so minor it just doesn't matter.
    DRK: I'd be willing to argue that this job is in fact bad. Unplayable? No not really it still functions well, but the reason DRK was so solid in Endwalker was because of how it could keep up with GNB - and in rare cases surpass it - in terms of damage contribution (also not helped by WAR and especially PLD underperforming for the first half of the expac), but now that strength is just gone, on top of losing more than it gained this expansion. It does not feel good to play at all, it feels incomplete with the removal of Plunge and nothing to replace it, on top of less MP per minute meaning less Edge of Shadow usage, and having even *less* to do outside of their burst. Side note, i think losing damage on gap closers is a good thing, and GNB i feel got away with it because it's damage was already so high without it, especially with how much juice they gave it in DT, but DRK didn't get that. On top of it not having *any* form of sustain like the other tanks do (TBN helps but is not a solution) and I honestly feel like there's no reason to play it unless you're a *diehard* DRK enjoyer (which there's nothing wrong with btw). Every other tank just brings more and/or better than DRK does, and i wish they could address that in some way.
    GNB: I don't have much to say. GNB good. 141k Lion Hearts give me more dopamine than Fell Cleave ever will. Great Nebula is broken. It's fun to play. Losing Rough Divide isn't much of a loss at all imo. Even if it's not my main job (PLD will always be that for me tbh) it's still a very fun job to bring in no matter what.
    Overall, I do kinda agree that the tank role needs more to *do*. Valigarmanda is a great example of what makes tanking fun in this game, with near constant busters (Mountain Fire being a clear highlight), lots of places to use mits for the party, a surprising amount of auto attack damage requiring some short cooldown usage from yourself and sometimes your co tank to keep up, and invulns not cheesing mechanics and making WAR ignore half the fight with Holmgang, more fights like that please. I think all the tanks except DRK feel very good before Savage, and I'm hoping that 7.05 helps fix - or at the very least, address - some things that are dragging PLD and DRK behind, and I'm hoping Savage makes tanking feel a lot more engaging overall. If fights like Vali are the norm, I think we don't have much to worry about.

    Dark needs more of an identity because right now it doesn't really have anything besides .
    Before it used to be THE tank with high damage and a way to mitigate an ally on a short cooldown, but all tanks have a targeted cooldown now.
    It could be the tank that has a kit suited for self healing without being locked to a specific window like Warrior.
    Give Oblation a weak Bloodbath effect.
    Give Salt and Darkness a 200 potency heal per enemy hit -- giving the Dark Knight a reason to choose a time to detonate it.
    Let Abyssal Drain be it's own cooldown.
    Give Carve and Spit a 500 potency heal.
    Legit any one of those or a combination would make it feel like so much less of a burden in dungeon content without completely breaking it in Savage and Ultimate.

      DRK was only high DPS for HW and part of EW. SHB had it almost always eclipsed by PLD and GNB, same with StB for PLD and WAR being generally better.
      That said, DRK has also been in every single world first Ultimate clear, regardless of how meta they were. PLD is second place, only missing out on TOP. The tank DPS meta really isn't as huge a deal as people like to make it out to be.
      That said, WAR having such high DPS with its easy rotation, on top of Bloodwhetting and Holmgang is just silly.

      I couldn't agree more. It seems to have a bunch of different damage buttons and they thought that was enough for identity? Let more things drain and heal. Salt and earth could be a constant drain over time. Esteem, carve and spit, and shadowbringer could drain or make shields or put up a mitigation. They don't do enough damage now to justify only doing damage imho.

      @@holmesholmes.8784 Having heals in your kit ≠ being more similar to Warrior. Warrior's healing comes in gigantic bursts and small regens and not really much in-between, and importantly Bloodwhetting only works on GCDs.
      It'd be fine and unique to let DRK be a sustain tank focused around using *primarily* oGCD damage tools for sustain.

    A thing to note for WAR with double tankbusters, and double anything for that matter, is that Nascent Flash heals both you and your target. This is 3200 healing potency combined, plus the dinky little 400 potency shield on your target.

      Not to mention that NF still gives your target 10% mit. Pretty nice double TB tech. PLD is the only other tank that has something similar, focusing more on mit than healing (20%/30% dmg red vs 10% dmg red, 2000 pot heal vs 3600 pot heal/shield).
      With M2 and M3 having split and shared TBs (we'll see if savage keeps it similar), that double TB tech will be nice to have this tier.

    Gunbreaker is so much fun, but my God is there a HUGE discrepancy between crit and non crit lionheart. My strongest crit lionheart to date is 113k, but when it doesn't crit it does less than 60k. It makes me cry when I go entire runs without seeing a lionheart crit.
    My group is going gunbreaker (me) and dark knight. Because we don't care about meta and the other tank just likes dark knight. I literally rolled a dice before Dawntrail and it landed on dark knight, so ya.

      @@dyeres5843 probably that new skill just doing more damage. war has a bunch of 30-40k ones but the 100 skill was only doing 60-65 for me in 695 gear.

    The huge downgrade DRK got in both gameplay and damage going into dawntrail makes me very sad. Even if they buff the potencies, the job still just doesn't feel as satisfying to play, and its a massive shame.
    Dark knight's high APM gameplay is what I loved about it so much (in addition to its glams being so cool), now it's just a very cool looking, but boring job to play with mediocre output. This in addition to being the least self-sufficient tank means there's very little reason to pick it unless you just really like the aesthetic.

      DRK has been getting repeatedly gutted since ShadowBringer, at this point, DRK enjoyers are all role playing as Guts for the suffering we've watched DRK go through 3 expacs in a row

      @@SeikiKisaki Been calling it since shadowbringers and all i got was people coping its job design flaws because "omg look at the dmg numbers". The job had very serious design flaws but people constantly overlooked it cause the damage it dealt. As the others tanks got better upgrades. Our job design just stuck the same terrible way.
      Only now people noticed. The job really does need a rework cause its just be awful to play. DRK should have sustain. Its even in lore they should.

      @@GhosttheassassinSJ For some reason the majority of the community only think about the numbers. The numbers that you don't even see unless you run an external app that the devs don't even approve of. I wanna have fun INSIDE THE GAME, not look at some dang numbers, dagnabbit.
      It's so annoying to see Quietus and Abyssal Drain get nerfed in ShBr only for WAR to get a much better version of the same thing that Abyssal Drain was on a 25s CD in EW. At this point it's pretty damn obvious that the dev team only plays WAR and no other tank, lol.

    Personally im fine with DRK lack of sustain however we need to be #1 in damage as a trade off.

      It's not just it's Sustain, even it's mitigation is meh, TBN is nowhere near as good as the other tank's big mitigation buttons like Blood whetting, holy Sheltron, or heart of corundum. Yeah it has a 10 second lower cooldown...but comes with the risk that if it doesn't pop, it's wasted, and all the other tank's versions of it, just do a lot more. It's also not like you're using TBN every 15 seconds so the 10 second less cd doesn't really matter. That's not even mentioning that some of it's mitigations have been relegated to mitigating magic damage only lol. Also...imo, the weapon out stance looks kind of dumb...which doesn't really have anything to do with how good or bad it is, but js.
      It has no job identity, ranks 3rd place for damage, the worst mitigation, and non-existent self-sustain. It's pretty clear the devs don't really know what to do with Drk. It, more than any other class, needs a rework, and while people might fear what SE will do to a reworked class, what are they gonna do, make it even worse? Even if they simplify it, they'd (hopefully) give people a reason to play it other than just liking it's aesthetic.

    The way DRK has been gutted over the years down to now being the lowest CPM tank in the game is just so sad to me, and I really wonder sometimes whose feedback they're listening to when making job adjustments because in cases like DRK it feels like they're taking feedback from people who don't play or enjoy the job rather than those who do.

    It is good to hear you talk about Clemency and Cover as useful tools, I heard people throwing shade on them due to the damage loss or not being intervention but they have saved countless lives for me in casual content that they definitely earn their place.
    Also RIP Plunge, it was always funny to get carried by the weight of the thrown dark knight sword to the enemy

      Clemency is the spell you absolutely never want to use in PF, but you're grateful it exists in DF. Soooo many scuffed DF randoms where I had to play blue healer since the healer decided to play green floor tank.

      Though it is useful for when things go wrong, you cannot deny the fact that far, far more PLDs incorrectly use Clemency on losing their first little bit of health, made even more comical when healer mits and delayed healing more than cover for dungeon tankbusters, and a PLD decides Excogitation is too risky because god forbid his hp fall below 50%, let alone 90%. For every PLD like you that can use Clemency effectively, there are 10 bad PLDs and RDMs that piss off competent healers in duty finder.
      The absolute worst ones do not use any mp for dps because all mp are for "emergency" Clemencies, and Holy Sheltron/Intervention are never used for their healing, either, at lvl 82+.

      People who push tanks for high dps are people who don’t know wtf they’re doing.
      Tanks are for threat and mitigation. Dps is tertiary in priority for what they do.
      My DPS is decent as a paladin but it’s never my priority. DPS players need to focus on that.

      Since Tanks can literally deal around 60-70% of a Dps dealers dmg, Tanks are technically by now some kind of sub Dps job, with additional responsibilities like mitigation mapping and Aggro management. Same goes for healers they also need to deal proper dmg. Tho they don’t go as high as Tanks yet. But yeah game is mostly about the dmg output more or less, is also the reason why PLD and DRK will get no screen time in savage unless they get buffed towards GNB/WAR.

    Honestly, I just want DRK to go back to being the high damage tank. GBK can stay ahead of it if the devs want it to, but I think the most appealing part of this job was always being an extremely aggressive Tank that used a gigantic sword to inflict as even more pain than some DPS classes with its opener. To see that taken away is a bit of a shame.

    PLD: Make the blades combo either DH or Crit. If its just the last cast do both.
    DRK: Buff potencies and/or its mitigation. At one point it out healed WAR, and for whatever reason SE decided to gut that ability while not buffing their damage output.

    Tiny correction on the WAR double Ruination tech: you're still able to fit two Ruinations inside the pot window, just not inside the 2-min window so what was a small gain became even more negligible.

    Man.
    I started this game approaching a year ago, and caught up this past early winter. DRK had been my go to for the entire time, it just felt like the right tank for me. During this past winter and spring, I started looking into high level content, made friends, and joined a proper static for the upcoming Savages here in a couple days now.
    These DRK changes are so incredibly discouraging
    "Hey, so that class that youve worked a majority of your playtime to master? Yeah we're going to just make it less fun, give it practically no reason to pick over other tanks, and let you question what those 1100 hours were for"

    Really good vid as always! It was great to hear someone acknowledge how unique and powerful of an ability Oblation is when used properly for once. It tends to get dismissed a lot even by content creators as "half a cooldown", but DRK's standout capability as a personal vuln-stack-eraser is one of the thngs that makes me love it. It's just... really a shame what happened to our burst, and even our filler with the MP deficit. I'm not holding any hope/expectation for plunge to come back or for blood weapon and delirium to be unpaired, but I really, really hope they address the MP issue, either by letting delirium grant 5 stacks of blood weapon, or by buffing the MP gain-per-hit to math out to the same 3000

      Yep, since rampart added a healing received boost, and shields count as a type of healing in this game, that's what happened there. That said, it's probably not ideal to spend both your 20% and 40% cds at the same time unless there's a mechanic you really can't survive otherwise and your invuln is on cd.
      Rampart probably also affects the shields from bloodwhetting and brutal shell, but not the shields from TBN or Divine Veil because they're percentage based.

      But you can still totally use Guardian at the last second of Rempart, and that's without counting the few cases where tanks have to "kitchen-sink" everything in savage content and up.

      Guardian alone probably makes PLD the best OT of the tanks. It means the healers practically NEVER need to worry about healing them so they can just focus on the MT and other party members. It also means outside of OT mechanics, PLD is free to throw intervention out as a free 1000 potency heal to the MT and/or any DPS, and Cover is also fine to use since they won't need to worry about damage from the boss stacking up too high on them. They also get more chances for Passage of Arms to be useful since they'll be able to hover near the party most of the time.

      PLD since ew has always been an excellent ot thanks to Intervention, the only drawback being the low dps output compared to a GNB. However, Divine Veil is overall a better ability than Heart of Light, so PLD still has better general party utility than GNB, though I still consider GNB first because Heart of Corundum and Aurora are so much better for supporting the single healing department.

    got chosen as one of the tanks in my static for this xpac, leveled dark knight and was so incredibly dissappointed, i love the fantasy behind it but the job just feels so hollow. ive made the full swap to gunbreaker.

    One of my biggest gripes with DRK has always been dark mind. Dark mind isn't bad, it's good in raiding for many tank mechanics being magic damage, but it's still the most situational compared to the other tanks. I could be wrong, but it's almost worthless in dungeons? I'm just a person that wants dark mind changed.

    DRK's biggest feel bad to me this raid tier is in damage types. Dark mind is a strong CD if you can use it, but it feels to me at least there is a concerted effort in fight design to strip it away by making most if not all damage physical, which also has a knock on to Dark Missionary and Heart of Light. I just feel like I bring less to the raid when I just look at 2 buttons that are so niche. Oblation is fine on face but it's quite lackluster considering it has to cover for having less self and raid mitigation.

    One of my favorite activities during an expansion launch is tanking teaching party extremes and helping people new to extremes get their clears/mounts. Paladin is perfect for that. It's also nice to switch between PLD and GNB, from slower job to busier job based on my mood.

    I wouldn’t be surprised if the devs announce that DRK was next in receiving a rework to their kit. But then the question would be how would they change the job to be more enjoyable and unique.
    Personally, I would look at how DRK works from other FF games or the Bravely Default series; to be exact, trading HP for damage or the lower your HP the higher your damage. DRK has something like this in its PvP kit. A way I could see something like trading HP for damage is making TBN drain a certain percentage of HP from the player and replace with a shield, if the shield brakes HP is restored and Flood/Edge of Shadow potency is increased by 100. If it doesn’t you wasted MP, HP, and Damage.
    Another example I could think of is making Bloodspiller and Quietus scale off the DRK current HP. For example, if DRK is at 75-50% HP Bloodspiller/Quietus potency is increased by 50-150 depending on how low their HP is, additionally to having a flat heal when casting these two abilities.
    I think DRK should be a job that represents the Risk vs. Reward playstyle that makes people channel their inner masochist and say, “YES HIT ME!”. I don’t play DRK so I can’t say these are good idea’s so I would appreciate it if DRK mains share their thoughts and opinions on what I brought up to improve the job.

      The problem is with how raids are designed and the whole 2 minute meta, it's almost impossible for them to do anything interesting with sacrificing HP. It's thematic as hell for DRK, but what happens when a DRK at full health does bad damage and a DRK at 50% becomes the highest among the tanks? It's going to be a nightmare to coordinate with your healers to balance that amount to be "low enough for big damage, high enough to not die" and probably very hard to balance if you always want to be low HP every 2 mins, especially since sqex seems to love throwing tankbusters at us during our bursts.
      I agree that breaking TBN should buff the potency of Edge though, we need better rewards for breaking TBN. Personally I think DRK needs a 2nd combo ender for Dark Arts uptime just to make it more engaging and some blood gauge management since it's non-existent at this point.

    What's the burst potential of each of these tanks? I ask because FFLogs damage alone can be somewhat misleading.
    There's a subset of jobs that I like to call (for lack of a more accepted term) feeders. They're jobs that don't have high overall DPS output, and they typically don't have great raid buffs. However, a disproportionate amount of damage is confined to their burst windows.
    DRK was an example of this in the latter half of EW. It'd been nerfed to the point where it no longer had great overall DPS, but it still had exceptional damage during burst. As a result, it looked pretty middling on actual FFLogs reports, but it still had a place in most speed groups since it fed so much damage to other jobs during 2 minute windows. It contributed a ton of damage, but a lot of that damage was represented on the rDPS for other jobs.

    All jokes aside tho, every time they seem to have DRK take an awesome leap forward, it takes a skull-shattering flip backwards. Its just sad at this point.
    It just honestly feels kind of terrible right now.
    It does everything decently, but excels at basically nothing.
    Meawhile, Gunbreaker and Warrior can basically do *everything* incredibly well and Paladin's only weakness is its low average damage output. If it had that, then DRK really would be the WORST Tank Job in the game in every way.

    WAR does have 1 weakness over the other tanks, a weakness I never realize until I did an alt job run in P12s. Bloodwhetting is 20% mit at max compared to 30% for Sheltron and HoC. And DRK can pop oblation on top of TBN for 37.5% effective. Doesn't matter most of the time until you need to survive that one big hit like the AA after paradeigma 1 if you main tank. Sure you can pop thrill/rampart but that means you have 1 less mitigation for the next 90 sec.
    Will this matter in Arcadion who knows

      Given how DT mimicked SB job-wise and that the FFXIV team is extremely formulaic, it's likely that the next one will be similar to ShB, so new tank and physical ranged. Unless they pull a new HW and we get 3 new non-limited job which is unlikely.

      Thankfully it isn't cope, I don't remember where but they more or less confirmed that they're doing a loop in terms of when we get new jobs per role, Dawntrail had a caster/melee just like Stormblood, so 8.0 will be getting tank/phys range, considering phys range still has only 3 jobs and healer got a new job more recently than tank it makes sense :D

    played PLD as my tank for past expansions, had been levelling and enjoying gunbreaker during the month before dawntrail. swapped to gunbreaker as my tank for dawntrail, and it has had me considering swapping main roles. the fact that its really strong right now probably contributes, but it feels so satisfying compared to still not knowing a good rotation for PLD at level 90.

    5:30 The double weaving is irrelevant to whether you can get the full opener into the potion. I didn't even know they had changed potions to be double weavable but have been doing the full combo under potion duration.

    Gunbreaker new 120s makes sense, Camouflage was too weak compared to other 90s.
    I feel that DRK 120s is the weakest of all, 1200 corundum effect is way too weak. DRK rotation also feels like it's 1 or 2 expansion behind.
    Warrior new 120s was like... Yeah, WAR has the strongest defensive kit, so just slap regen on it to not make it broken even more.
    Paladin is the protector, I think it's good mitigation wise with 2 hotdog... I mean 2 raidwide mitigations. Its DPS should be severely bumped, thought.

    Something I've noticed with all of these tank reviews, you even alluded but didn't discuss it (or I missed it). With DRK having Blood Weapon merged with Delirium, you went from 5 stacks down to 3 per minute, that's a loss of 1200MP per minute or 2400MP per burst window. This is especially felt by how RESTRICTIVE TBN feels to use, you just feel like you never have that little bit of extra spare MP in the pool for a clutch TBN or "I can always TBN a buster". This also is reflective in their DPS as that 1200 per minute, turns into 12000 (or 4 edges) over the course of a 10min Fight.

    I want them to all out and make Palladin a supporting tank. Buff your party, mitigate the party, some sustain. Nothing crazy but id love to see more unique aspects in Palladin as well as the others.

    DRK hot take. I dont like tbn and i think living shadow should be changed or removed. DRK was the first tank i started playing and is still my tank main. That being said its always frustrating to see other tanks get the changes or additions that they want and need and DRK routinely getting ignored since TBN is such a good ability for it. I have heard it said that because TBN is so good that it feels like the devs use it as an excuse to not fix any issues the job has. Living shadow always frustrates me because even though its supposed to last for 20 seconds it realistically only lasts 10-12 since the animation for the activation takes 7-8 seconds. Feels pretty bad when living shadow hits harder than you do since they added the trait during EW which nearly doubles the potency of the skills living shadow uses. Its a glorified dot and personally i would be happier with it just becoming like a 50% damage buff for 10 seconds .And i feel confortable saying that since the devs didnt think to change enhanced unmend or salt and darkness 2.

    It's really interesting that Gunbreaker and Dark Knight both got a similar change for the same reason (losing damage on gap closers to reduce congestion during burst phases) but it played differently for both Jobs.
    I also didn't know that all three hits of the Atonement combo had different potencies. I thought it was just an animation change. I've been playing paladin since the rework and it was the tank I was planning to play for Dawntrail.
    I wonder if boss positioning will play a bigger role in Savage? I can see a few mechanics in the Arcadion that could be made more difficult if the boss didn't go back to center (i.e Lariat Combo). One thing I'll never really understand is what do tanks want from an Aggro systems? I hear people lament it's fall from relevance but I don't know how people what aggro to work.

    Despite PLD having the lowest potential damage, I think overall it'll settle into its common thread of 'safe' pick when it comes to casual and PF made groups. Outside of dedicated harcore statics like you said, having that utility will usually be more appreciated than pure damage, at least so far as my own experience has shown.
    Just a shame that it's combo relies so heavily on crit fishing to match WAR/GNB's baseline.

    I think if you have a comfy GNB player, right now GNB/WAR is easily the best tank combo. NF can be thrown on your cotank and HoC likewise to take advantage of the extra healing at no loss, and their party mits of Heart of Light and Shake it Off compliment each other depending on the types of raid wides coming out. I also feel their invulns are the two best due to the nature of how they perform. PLD can be a solid pick, but DRK just feels like the last choice to take as the numbers stand at this time.

    Especially with the drk changes I rly hope they bring a new tank next xpac and that is kinda too far away. GNB really feels like the only tank that is interesting to play rotationally, PLD has some interesting stuff that could be done with its mitigation and the ranged could be benefit at times but it still seems quite resident with lack of ogcds. For GNB lionheart does make the gameplay bit more challenging with fitting everything in burst optimally but imo it also feels much worse to use compared to the 3x burst strike combo we had before. The animation and lack of continuation just doesn't feel as good and the damage is also horribly delayed which doesn't matter too much but sucks at times. In my static its issue that all who would want to play tank would only want to play GNB coz theres just no other tank that comes close, so I hope they bring new tank thats busy and slightly more "complex" like GNB.

    I really really liked EW Dark Knight, it was the job that taught me to pove tanking, and I'm really sad at the changes it got... One I don't see getting mentioned as often is that Living Shadow no longer costs blood, which felt especially notable to me as remembering to ensure I had enough for it was one of the tricker parts when I was still learning, and remaines tricky when I get too desynced because of a death or scramble, it was a fun little sidegame in the resource management. I'm probably gonna give the other tanks a go, see if any of them speak to me a bit better now (Gunbreaker I at least already have at 90, but that was a bit TOO busy for me, most of the time...)

    My experience in healing tanks last expac in ultimates were that DRKs were the less stressful (unless they were main tanking autos). DPS wise, sure not the best, but their invuln (cd, duration and effect) and potential TBN usages are a godsend

    Warrior was my go to for leveling to 100 first so I could tag hunt train mobs for full credit. It's major boon for me though is its ability in soloing maps. I'm able to do the lvl 90 boss maps with relative ease, I haven't tried the door maps for 90 yet.

      I have the same thing, I have cross hotbars turned on, but my controls are set to mouse and keyboard instead of controller. Still lets you use a controller as you would in controller mode, but you can place regular hotbars too

    i believe pld was due to have it's potency buffed in the 7.1 patch, will be interesting to see by how much though. It'll be my go to tank this expac, it's kit is great for proggin through and seein mechanics. May switch to gnb once we start aiming for faster kills, will wait to see what adjustments are in store.

    Ngl.... kinda wish we as paladins had a rez or clemency at half the curent cast time and cost for the same healing so that way we can actually do stuff without having to cry bout our mp and the fact we only really get back around 3,400 mp back per every window with the odd gcd into the rotation but aside from that it's fine (this whole expac has been a brutal thing for me

    Pretty sure the strongest tank is the guy who’s invul cools down quickly and sees dropping to 1HP as a benefit because it means his rotations aren’t wasting the millions of HP he could be regen’ing on his own.

    I really hope they screw the balance a little tighter soon. Warrior is too much of a win button in dungeons (having an advantage in them is fine, I'm a WHM main for goodness' sakes, WAR just takes it way too far), and if Dark Knight is going to stay the least sustainable then at least it should become the hardest hitting with no contest.
    Also make Disesteem queue off of something like Delirium and not Living Shadow. Give us the fun buttons outside of the 120s burst.

    I main war so im really happy to hear that its got its time to shine 😊 but i also wanted to pick DRK as a 2ndary option and hearing how its potential sunk kindof is dissapointing to hear but I'm not going to backdown from that choice regardless hopefully it does get improved soon...😅

    emmm paladin does less damage, but has more comfortable damage capability, may even end up having more damage up time in normal gameplay, which results in more damage, just like why people like summoner

    As a pld main it’s also sad to hear that we tell that far behind in damage… again. I do love it for its toolkit though. So many of them have been run savers and it feels amazing to pull off so I think I’m sticking with my fave, warts and all!
    (You do make me want to try war tho)

    While it has gotten some sustain buffs in 7.1, I didn’t mind DRK’s lower sustain.
    To me it was the most fun tank to play BECAUSE I couldn’t keep myself alive no matter the scenario. I am mortal.
    It also means the healer has to play the game.

    My biggest complaint with GNB is how garbage it can feel if you drift anything, or have a gcd of downtime. When you get everything perfect you feel like god, but one goof and the whole thing feels really meh. The other tanks feel like they have a lot more wiggle room between burst windows. WAR in particular. as long as you press inner release on CD your burst windows all feel REALLY good, regardless of what happened during your filler. It's why at this point I only play GNB when I have content on farm, and pick a different tank for prog

    This'll be my first Savage tier where I play tank and I've decided on PLD and WAR:) I've been practicing in the extremes and I've really been enjoying them. Gonna be PFing though since I don't have time for a static.
    Idk what it is about GNB but it feels a bit jank to me? Idk if its Double Down costing 2 cartridges but it doesn't feel great to play personally. Maybe I'll try it again eventually.
    DRK is just kind of there lol the skills look cool but it's kinda boring outside of burst which is why I'm not a big fan of NIN either.

    I don't mind PLD being on the bottom of the damage just solely because of its party utility kit.
    I DO mind WAR being on the TOP of the damage for that exact reason, however, and damn do I seriously think DRK should be 2nd.
    Like.. sure, it can have potentially decent recovery totals through TBN and decent mitigation through throwing Oblation around, but the fact of the matter is, you don't balance around potentially, you balance around actual or average. DRK.. has neither, to be brutally honest. Oblation is solid, but TBN being resource-tied and pretty damn punishing if you don't time it properly, is not.
    Even in dungeons DRK just.. felt.. bad. In EW and ShB its lack of recovery felt very much nuke-it-before-it-nukes-you, and its suite of AoE tools really helped with that. Now, those tools LARGELY still exist, but things doing MUCH more damage in dungeons and just having larger HP pools makes it feel like it REALLY lost its niche. You really can't nuke things on it as hard anymore, which makes your 1m windows go outta whack, and you take SO much more damage in exchange. Your AoE damage is comparatively higher than the other tanks I believe, but it's VERY small, and it's far from enough.
    And then there's single target situations, where DRK flat-out has the worst self-recovery kit out of all the tanks, bar none. TBN remains an incredibly solid "heal" option (on meters anyways) but it's just not going to save a run at this point, because shielding a near-dead target for 4 seconds still leaves the target near-dead. There's no recovery. Add in its strict loss of nuke potential, and the real question is, what the hell is DRK supposed to be doing now? Panic single-target mit? That's not a fantastic niche, when unless the target you're panic-mitting has a whole suite of tools to recover a party available at the time (which, they likely won't if it's at that point), it won't change anything.
    Not entirely sure what to say about memebreaker being at the top. Sure, it's got a decent kit, but it's also a right royal pain in the ass to play properly, so.. difficulty and punishment boost, really. I don't like GNB as a concept, but even I've gotta admit, it should be at or close to the top for what it demands out of the player... But DRK should be up there too, given what it CAN'T do in comparison to the other tanks.

    My opinions on the upgraded 2 minute defense cooldowns from best to worst, only considering the new effects:
    Paladin's Guardian: Absolutely the best. You can easily deal a tankbuster with just it alone, but pair it with Holy Sheltron, and tankbusters hardly do any real damage.
    Gunbreaker's Great Nebula: Very good overall with the HP boost and heal it provides.
    Dark Knight's Shadow Vigil: Decent overall due to the increased self-sustain it gives, as Endwalker DRK was lacking that.
    Warrior's Damnation: Worthless. Why give extra self-sustain when it already had it in abundance?

    As a DRK main it does feel kinda awkward following the Blood Weapon change. I hope they either revert the buff to 5 stacks or make each stack 1000 mp instead of 600 mp. So I might lean more to using WAR for blind prog due to how comfy it is.

    There is something you didn't mention about the DRK : another change from EW to DT is living shadow no longer cost any blood gauge, which mean in comparaison on a 2 minutes rotation, you gain 10 blood instead of loosing 40. It's a thing to mention, as it also gives a bonus blood spiller in burst phase.
    I agree with you about how low dommage on Paladin and DRK is something to consider, however, we need to pay attention to the following patch note, as it will come with some buff and nerf. But I disagree about tanks having less things to do in fight : Aggro Management was never a tank job in FFXIV, it was a DPS thing, and mostly a ninja one, and clever positionning to me never match the new puzzle the game offers to us, and the addition of many party, co-tank, and self mitigation, which are to me far more interessing.

    Still feel like they should give the 4 tanks their identity split into two catagories like healers.
    War and gnb being better damage dealers and pld and drk being better out and out tanks, i know this causes issues if content is clearable with the 2 dps tanks but make their invulns and the encounters reflect that you really do need a tanky tank to get through.

    I just play Gunbreaker cuz it looks the coolest lol, it does help that even with all it has to do within its burst window it's just clicked with me. Warrior is in the reserves if I want to shut my brain off more and paladin is what I play if I want to think, Dark Knight....it's just there for me.

    I played War, GNB, and DRK last xpac in savage and ultimate and DRK was my favorite tank. They killed drk for me. It used to be the ninja of the tanks with the busy burst the set up for the 2 min window and now with this new combo that reward is gone. I love that shadow is no longer on the gauge and no potency on gap closer is fantastic. But nothing replaced it and now it feels like a clone of warrior. WAR still feel like WAR. S tier. I haven't gotten GNB to 100 yet but my friend who mains gnb have told me it still feels clunky.

      Here's a cursed fact: They removed the gapcloser damage, but didn't add it back in for stuff under 94. Furthermore, Esteem/Fray/LS has 150 less potency because of it and if the boss moves, you lose even more dmg from it than you would in EW, due to no plunge. And also, with less mana from Blood Weapon, you have less TBN and might not get them out on time. Also also, with the merge, you can now overcap much more easily, which was an unnecessary change, imho
      Went from maining DRK for tanking and BLM for dps to... well still don't know what since the other tanks besides maybe GNB are meh, Healers are boring as shit, even in ultis and DPSs in general are just "press your rotation on this dummy whilst playing touhou with some bosses"

      ​@The_Remage esteem actually has more damage at 90 now then it did before, not sure why you think it lost damage, plunge does no damage but it's other skills got buffs to compensate for it.

      And if you don't believe me go check the patch notes and the job skills on esteem, they have higher potency now.

      @@noahsmith865 Note that I didn't say overall. Esteem has quite a lot of damage, yes. It has more damage than before, yes. But if the boss moves during your 2 minutes and Esteem is already swinging, he will restart his combo with Abyssal drain and Shadowstride, hence the comment. This was the case before, but at least plunge had (any) potency.
      Also, the dmg increase on other skills and so only apply from 94 onwards (both drk and esteem) and from the numbers from memory, they didn't add the lost plunge damage back to any of the other weaponskills/actions/spells.
      If you have any way for me to check in a better way, do tell as I'm genuinely interested.

    DRK needs to do more damage than WAR imo. They can do this by giving us access to more MP and more Blood, this also fixes some of the other issues with the job. They could just lower the CD on Delirium and probably DRK is feeling better to play.

    You were going into PLD's glaring weakness and I thought for sure you were going to say its lack of recovery after a death. Dying on PLD suucks. You run out of MP to do Confiteor and you get rez'd without gauge to use your defensive so you're stuck without it until it builds back up.

    it honestly feels like they have no clue what they want DRK to be. in the original FF games the role of the Dark Knight is to expend HP to do damage, then heal it back. It's a high risk, high reward damage dealer. But since it's a tank in this game, spending HP means you could accidentally throw raids by using HP cost damage at the wrong time. So that gets pushed out the window - can't be a sustain tank.
    DRK gets magic usage earlier than Paladin, which is cool...but then you realize Paladin actually has a magic phase in its rotation which makes it feel more intuitive whereas DRK would have to manage MP with Blood Weapon (which has been nerfed this patch). So it doesn't really feel like the "magic" tank.
    Then theres GNB, which opts for a high DPS gimmick whilst still being a tank. So even with all its damage buttons, DRK gets outclassed. They seriously need to figure out what they want this job's core identity to be. Maybe they should make this job the most team mit focused tank. They already have TBN and the teamwide magic resistance up - just follow through with it.
