My basic tips for the first time using a sewing pattern (mistakes I’ve learned from)! 1. Choose your size based on your measurements in the chart on the pattern. All pattern companies have different sizing and none of them match sizing in clothing shops. A size 12 in a shop could be anywhere from 8-20 in sewing patterns 2. Look at the types of fabric the pattern suggests and choose your fabric accordingly- especially look for information on how much stretch is needed 3. Make a toile for whatever you’re making in a cheap fabric similar in weight and stretch to the fabric you’re using for the final piece. See if it fits, make changes if not, then transfer those changes to the paper pattern. Then cut out your proper fabric using the adjusted paper pattern 4. If using velvet or corduroy, make sure you’re cutting every piece out in the same direction so the nap of the fabric is the same all the way around the garment 5. Learn some basic terms like grainline, notches etc. Most patterns assume you already have this knowledge 6. For trousers, be prepared for a really dodgy fit for the first couple pairs especially if you are not straight sized. Looking up trousers fitting adjustments helps e.g. full/flat seat adjustment, full tummy adjustment, full/thin thigh adjustment. It’s a learning curve but worth it! 7. Check out some indie pattern companies’ beginner patterns. Usually they are more accessible than the big 4 pattern companies in terms of sizing and instructions being understandable
Patterns taught me so much about sewing. I rarely use them now but they can be a great learning tool to help you get to a proficient level faster than trial and error. It also helps you learn the correct order to do things in, the most efficient order for the steps. Once you know the order of steps, you can often sew without any instructions. (because if you make your own patterns, they won't come with instructions!) Patterns taught me techniques that I rarely see self-taught people using: facings, yokes, welted pockets, lapped zipper fly, 2-piece collars, lapels, things that will elevate your garments and make them fit better. Always read through the whole instruction sheet before you cut or sew anything. When you know what steps are coming up next, you won't jump the gun and do things in the wrong order.
Reading a pattern can be hard. As a seamstress who has been sewing for decades, I have one major piece of advice. Practice your pattern on practice fabric first. That way you know what works. Good luck.
Yes definitely, especially if your fabric is expensive. For pants I often make the mock-up as shorts, because the lower leg isn't going to be the tricky part as far as fit goes. It's the upper part that has all the details that might need adjusting.
Phenomenal job Sera!!! 😍 Your pants turned out absolutely STUNNING! They look SO GOOD on you!!! This was SO RELATABLE... When I first learned to sew, it was literally in sewing class in high school, and we used patterns. I took a second year of sewing classes in high school, and my mother bought me a sewing machine because it was evident to her this was something I wanted to continue with. I haven't used an actual pattern since a few years after high school. I always utilized my sewing time doing alterations and repairs to existing clothing pieces, rather than constructing an entirely new garment. I was also experiencing more joy and satisfaction from doing tasks like these, as well as the odd upcycle using things I already owned. This was also true with thrifting... finding a piece of clothing that fits ALMOST perfect, or one that had a really small damaged spot that would be a simple repair. I also do repairs and alterations for family and close friends now and then. I would likely feel initially LOST if I were to make a garment or item from a pattern now, but I agree with you... there are SO MANY online video tutorials to support everyone nowadays with their tasks and hobbies (I'm dating myself... but there was no youtube when I finished high school LOL!)
Thank you Sera. I’ve ordered the pattern and the fabric based on this experience. I’m pretty much stuck buying all my fabrics online, so seeing how it works up is incredibly helpful. Luckily I’m a seasoned pattern user, and plan to change the front pockets a bit, but the width of the legs is exactly what I’m looking for. Can’t wait to do my own experimenting.
They came out so good! I bought my first pant pattern about two weeks ago and I prepped my fabric and everything but I couldn’t figure out how to match my measurements with the pattern size and it gave me a headache so I took a break lol. This video was super motivating and I’m excited to give it another go! Thank you!
i recently started sewing with patterns too! it's a lot to get used to but once you find your groove, its simpler than putting together an ikea bookcase
I almost bought this same pattern last Monday at Joanns, but the red pants didn't look high waisted enough for me. Now I know they will be just perfect. I'll be making a trip to the fabric store tomorrow...happy day. Thanks for modeling them.
I’m late to the party. But thank You for letting us see your raw feeling of opening and using a pattern. I have soo many patterns and their collecting dust! Pants came out amazing!!! Going to order my pattern now. ❤
Those are my most favorite style pants & even the material is fabulous!!! Just happened to stumble across your video. You should watch Utuber Jenna Phipps who truly reminds me of you & she also enjoys sewing her own clothes, thrifting & DIY's.
Hiii You should try sewing patterns from independent pattern makers. Alternative patterns for this style of pant: Persephone pants from Anna Allen , Dawn Jeans from Megan Nielsen (great 4in1 pattern!) , Peppermint Wide leg pants (which is FREE!)
Yesssssss!!! I was sooo on this video!!! I was gonna alter some men's slacks to make wide leg pants maybe two tone so I can combine two pair🤷🏽♀️, not sure yet. Any advice? Stunning, stunning girl!! Love your videos!! The button holes are not bad!!👏🏽👏🏽 You did great!!! ❤️God bless and stay safe!!!
These came out sooo lush! I am low key giggling at your fear of patterns though, as I am the complete opposite! I *sew* admire that the things you make 'free style' and I have never been able to trust myself to do the same. I neeeeeeed a pattern and instructions are my comfort zone, doing things on my own and making it up as I go I find soooouch much more terrifying! so well done you for reaching outside of your comfort zone and rocking these trousers!!
@@sapphirecamui6447 and the more time you spend doing one, the harder the other can seem. I'm trying to branch out and do more upcycling and freehanding, and only using pattern pieces for symmetry as needed.
Oooo I’ve had this exact pattern for a while now, but making a zip fly for the first time has intimidated me so much that I’ve never used it. This video is giving me confidence to take the plunge, well done!!
You may want to wash your fabric before you cut your fabric as some fabric can shrink alot! If you wash it after you cut it out they may not fit as they may have shrunk in size.
Yes, especially this cotton fabric which will very likely shrink. Prewash and dry the fabric the same way you plan to wash and dry the finished garment.
🎉🎉🎉🎉they're amazing! You did such a good job! And I have hope for myself...I've been collecting patterns and have never used one 🤦🏻♀️😭. I have hope now 💗. Thank you!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Cool, be proud of doing this. I had a real pain to find the pattern, somehow New Look and Burda got mixed globally. New Look seems to have the cooler patterns, very European, yet they seam to be a US brand, where Burda, the EU brand has pretty ugly stuff more USA Springfield mall style. But found a local Dutch seller. A bit pricier, but with the recent import duties still a lot cheaper than straight from the US.
I finally started my mock up after I saw you finished your pants!! I've been sitting on this pattern for awhile but your reaction got me motivated to make these!!! Great job!! They are so cool!
The first garment i made was pants. I copied a pair i had, and just did it. No pockets, though, and elasticated waistband. They're so yummy as pajamas. After that, i made 2 more pairs following a pattern. I never made a shirt though... so there's that.
YOU USED A PATTERNNNNNNN aaaaaaaggggghhhh YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS!!! (but the beginning of this video? I was feeling all that anxiety. You got this. Go forth boldly and sew AWWWLLL tha things! P.S. I sent you a video in your IG msgs - I finished my niece's dress in time!)
This is my exact same process making wide leg pants i bought a pattern for. I only get done a tiny amount every day before i get overwhelmed and put it all to the side haha
Wouldn’t it be amazing if the Big Four pattern companies made the paper pattern pieces to actually fit the written measurements THEY write on the envelope?
omg thank you, I bought neon green fabric for pants JUST LIKE THIS over 3 months ago and I just stare at it, too intimidated to start. Pants are SO HARD, i'm going to use your video as motivation!! ps. you inspired me to make my own wedding dress and i'm over halfway with that, somehow pants are more intimidating than my own wedding dress lol
you made your own wedding dress and you were intimidated by a pants pattern? LOL you are so cute!

Couldn't you just measure the width of good fitting pants, and pick the pattern with the same waist width. Easy to measure on paper I would say.

I so much like your personality! You’re so genuine chaotic and smart! 🧡
You're hilarious. After making your wedding dress this should have been a walk in the park. But I must say, a hob well done.
You have a right to be proud. Congratulations.
Great job!! They look great. Just think how easy the next pair will be to make. Never stop learning. You go girl!!

You know what? i think there are 2 types of sewists out there: those who need a pattern and those who can freestyle it. A few can do both.

girl, plzz tell the purchasing link of the pattern, I cannot find it :(
The indie patterns that you print off from the internet actually fit the measurements listed! What a concept?!

You are making it waaaaay harder than it needs to be.....
Super cute
Great fit!
Where is that link for the zipper fly???
The finished garment measurements will be printed on one of the pattern pieces. That’s the one to go off
Can I have the link on the pants pattern pls!!
Wouldn’t it be amazing if the Big Four pattern companies made the paper pattern pieces to actually fit the written measurements THEY write on the envelope?
What pattern did you use??
That's so amazing
Funny. It wasn't that bad was it? Lol...😆
What is the pattern number?
When you have the same pattern that you have been putting off for a year
