  • The 2024 Yamaha YZ250F won our 2024 250 MX Bike Shootout with a comfortable margin of victory over the rest of the machines thanks to a potent powerplant, class-leading suspension, great balance, and superb cornering abilities. We turned to the aftermarket to see how much better we could make the 2024 SML 250 Bike of the Year, without getting too crazy.

Pat, did you mod the ECU? Maybe a vortex? Keep up the great vids!

I don't get it with this new YZ250F. Several reviewers saying it's dog slow off the bottom and feels slow and weak overall. AJ Catanzaro for example, but I've heard others too. Then Pat, you come along and say it has the most power and hits hard down low even before the mods. So which is it? Why are there such wildly different takes on this bike? I haven't ridden one, so the only thing I know for sure is that all 250Fs sound awful, and the Yamaha sounds the worst of the bunch...

Did you add the high compression piston and race fuel that is recommended for the GYTR head?

Pretty sure the ktm has 2-3 more horsepower. Yamaha has a 13 front sprocket which makes it feel snappy. Top speed is down 7-10 from the KTM. But maybe I’m wrong.

The best bike I really want myself to believe it. It doesn’t have the best power in class its 4th isn’t it? it’s just feels that way of the bottom apparently as the reviews say but when I rode the 23 at test day and one a few weeks later with a full FMF and hard hitting map, they sounded fast, but both felt flat as a pancake and no top end, then they closed the air is and added a heavier cam chain to the 24 making it sluggish? I loved the frame but at no point did I feel any zip from the motor Also I rode the new triumph and for a first brand new model the engine was fast, loads of top end power and rpm and it had crazy small 48 rear sprocket I believe it was and still felt faster than the stock yam. ( i don’t modify my engines )

That giant street bike is definitely not the best, maybe with over hype it is

Sound is half the game. The YZF 250 sounds like a tortured pigg screaming for dear life. The sound alone is a dealbreaker.
