  • Social media giant Meta has officially begun to block access to news on Facebook and Instagram in Canada in response to the Liberal government's Bill C-18 or the Online News Act. The Power Panel breaks down what this means for Canadians and the bill itself.

    Why not think it this way. Meta is letting the Canadian news outlet to post for free on Facebook. But the news outlet is complaining this free service. Its like letting a person to host a party in your house for free but that person also complain your free service and wanted the owner to pay up. The news outlet can choose to host their news somewhere else if they are not happy.

      This is exactly what I was thinking... Imagine if you had to pay everytime someone shared something you posted? It honestly makes NO sense. These platforms are not 'choosing' to post Canadian content, they are merely allowing others to "share" it.... Truthfully, when it comes down to it, It would make more sense to charge those sharing the content then it does to charge the platforms they are using... and even that is ridiculous.

    LPC has lost sight of every issue that is important for the people.
    On Housing JT says, "It is not the primary responsibilities of the Federal Govt". We would not be asking the Federal Govt to do something about housing if lower levels of Govt did their bloody job.
    On Ukraine, when asked if Canada should pursue a peace plan, JT blames the person questioning for falling for Russian Misinformation.
    On Inflation, JT is silent.
    But somehow, Trudeau Govt thinks defending C-18 is more important than Housing and Cost of Living problems.

    • @katherined1886
      @katherined1886 8 месяцев назад

      Yes, but it is NOT Meta and Google 'choosing' to use or share the content, it is people (Social Network Users) sharing the content or the news outlets themselves (may I add that the use of facebook, google, etc, allows these outlets to share the content to a large audience for FREE - or it did anyway until they got greedy), and most times these is a link to the news site that you click to continue reading... So I suppose if that based on this argument then the law should be asking users like you and I to pay if we want to share a link to a Canadian news story then?
      It is a mess... Seems it is just about giving the 'journalists' (aka big wig, government-funded, media outlets) double payment since they make money when you visit their sites anyway. It is all pathetic and it is all about monay as it always is.

I say let’s you every legislative and tax tool in their arsenal to make them pay their fair share. If they want to play this game let’s tax them on the value of all Canadian content including the ad revenue generated by every Canadian user and not just their Canadian operation! Meta doesn’t get to bully our democracy because they don’t like our lack of American style corrupt capitalism. Time to send the angry geese their way!

      They are complying with the law. It's C-18 that isn't. It overrides the Competition Act and the Copyright Act for the benefit of giant conglomerates who suppress competition. And Canada is already a world leader in "American-style corrupt capitalism." Look at how the CRTC -- entrusted with the implementation of this act! -- routinely renews the broadcasting licences of media giants and their subsidiaries despite their failure to meet their obligations.

      Canadian new already got free postings to Google and Meta, so why should Google and META have to also pay Canadian news broadcasters when they already get to post for free on Google and META? it makes no sense?
      The Canadian broadcasters didn't change the way they did business over the years and are now going out of business, it's their own fault for not changing how they do business, now their trying to force big tech to pay them now for what they get for free on big tech.
      Plus, who's to say what is misinformation in the news? the Canadian government? isn't that a joke! under the liberals they want the power to control what people see and hear in their favor, the new has to be democratic and free speech with balance form both sides and the people get the chance to decide for themselves what's real or not the liberal government!
      The Canadian liberals already passed the bill and told the big tech that it was the governments way or no way, and big tech called their bluff and now the liberal government is crying, big tech asked to discuss the new bill before it was passed, and the liberal government said NO! it's the liberal government that caused all of this in this censorship bill witch it really is because the liberal government ran out of money to give to the Canadian broadcasters, so they need someone's else money, that way they don't look like their buying Canadian broadcasters, either way this was caused by the liberal government and about censorship.
