A lot of Canadians have been asking me what they can do to help oppose this bill. I honestly think the best thing you can do is ask other Canadian RUclipsrs to speak out against Bill C-11. We need to make this bill more controversial, and I think the best way to do that is to make more Canadian RUclipsrs aware of it. No one, beyond special interests, supports this bill after hearing about it.

When this was first brought up I thought that it was used to control fringe voices. I did not realize that it was simply protectionism. Don't they know that Hollywood films in Vancouver. Basically, a good chunk of hollywood movies and TV shows are Canadian culture. This whole protectionism may be a front for something nefarious. I find the whole protectionism argument pretty weak.

I propose a Canadian nonviolent dissolution of this government. I appealed to the GG for Elizabeth 2 to dissolve parliament because Justin clearly needs a new mandate to implement his new policies.
To date Elizabeth 2 has failed to do her duty. I suspect that she and the rest of her family are indoctrinated by the WEF agenda and support it. Prince Charles years ago in a magazine article published in Canada was asked to justify the presence of the royal family to the taxpayers. His reasoning was that the Queen or King in our system of government would prevent a Hitler from holding power.
It has just recently come to light that the legitimate heir to the British throne resides in Australia. Mike Hasting was presented with this information before he died. He was a well respected member of the local community and a blue collar worker. He refused to engage in pursuit of his lawful claim after being presented with evidence from a BBC producer for numerous reasons, he was not interested in the money associated with it and the lack of privacy that this position would bring. His descendants have similar feelings it would appear.
Simon Hastings now holds his father's title and is the legitimate King of Canada. I do believe that although money is not an incentive I believe that a sense of duty and responsibility could change his mind. We need him to dissolve this parliament desperately to prevent a new Hitler from seizing power in Canada. I do therefore believe that if sufficient people will rally to this cause, a true democratic ground swell such as the truckers inspired we can get rid of Justin. We would have as a result a populous King who is one of us and would enjoy enormous support.
Please let me know your thoughts as well as to confirm this message did get through.

The Bells and Rogers of the world have steadfastly refused to inovate, to compete, to accept change, but turn to legislation to keep their failing ventures afloat.
I spent 20 years co-producing TV shows with these narrow minded people.
Here is a major disconnect we are seeing.
The suits, both Govt and Industry, have never created any content in their lives, but they find their purpose in dictating to the creators (talent) where when and how we can deliver our content. It is how they serve their egos and bottom lines.
We have an industry who can not compete anymore, being threatened by small independent creators who they are losing their control over.
When there are only 24 hours in a day to schedule programming, the networks hold incredible power over creators, and content.
That is all gone and they are petrified, because they know they are circling the drain, becoming less relevant and being surpassed by those who they used to control.
So they cry "culture" and proudly hold up their C number and broadcast "culturally relevant" reality Shows.😬
If they were truly concerned about Candian stories, Canadian culture they would not have neutered their local news departments, their local programming in favour of cheaper wheel feeds.
Great Job J.J., keep up the fight!

Let the governing bodies know that they must progress & not be dictating what content we Canadians must consume. I'm done with tv programming long ago. How can they think they know whats best for me? I wish to consume whatever I chose which align with my intrerests. RUclips being one of the platforms I find all sorts of creative & fascinating content (ranging from knitting pattern designers & creators doing buisness, to biology, to local individuals that grew their buiseness making hand dyied yarns from people raising alpcha that furnish the wool, to local yarn stores that sell these products to consumers like myself, where these yarn consumers meet yearly in automn at country apple orchards & jewellery makers too. Bringing people to discover other buisness people that generate & help grow small economies locally & spread out throughout the land. Most of which have had this success thanks to this social yt platform...these are all win-win for culture & getting to sell or buy pruducts from creators that may also be of different parts of this globe. Hurray! Happy people doing buisness on small scale yet making a descent living while sharing knowledge! So, thrilling & I can go on & on...) Now, I am very upset that these small communities are threatened by these established big guys bullying these mostly self made creators. Not with government subsidies etc... This little lady is quite upset & very disturbded by what is transpiring under this current gouvernment! They will get a piece of my mind & I will be sharing this info with these communities at our meet-ups. grrrr...sorry for the rant! ;) Good day to you sir. Let's knock out this bill.

There's also a pretty obvious corollary to that. Imagine you're a Canadian RUclipsr, and this bill just passed yesterday. You now have two different audiences to worry about:
      1. Your Canadian viewers.
      2. Your non-Canadian viewers.
You could make official, government-approved CanCon, which means you'll be more visible to audience (1), but possibly less interesting to both audiences. You could do nothing, and continue to make the videos you want to make. Or you could write off audience (1) completely and stop making content that is recognizably Canadian at all, because audience (1) probably isn't going to see it anyway. Of those three possible paths forward, I submit that average Candian RUclipsr is probably not going to choose the first one, while some of them might end up choosing the third one, and so the overall amount of Canada-related (not necessarily CanCon) content on RUclips will actually decrease.
(Disclaimer: I work for Google, which owns RUclips; I don't work on RUclips itself and all opinions are my own.)

In the 1970's the Canadian government in their zeal to promote official bilingualism brought the French network to Western Canada. A lot of men would stay up late to watch the French network. It was not because they wanted to learn French or had an altruistic desire to reach out to French Canadians. It was because the French network would show movies from France that had naked women in it. I was told that there was this movie called The Birth of A Nation that no network in North America would show because it was the most racist movie ever made. It was a movie that glorified white supremacy and glorified the Klu Klux Klan. The French network showed it twice. I would watch Donahue and see Americans that were upset by TV shows like Three`s Company or Charlie`s Angels. I thought if those Yanks could see what is shown on Canadian TV they would be appalled.

It may seem like it benefits them today but a few years down the road they'll realize they have less rights that they voluntarily gave to tyrants then the persecution they so feared will be manifest.
This is not a uniquely modern situation. It has a unique veneer but there are no new arguments or ideas being presented. These arguments go back as far as at least the ancient Greeks. If JJ has taught me anything, it's that Canada does the opposite of what the United States does, if only because "we're not the US!". So if the US gov't actually has in its Constitution a promise to not interfere with the free speech of its citizens, then surely Canada must do the reverse!

Industry changing giants like James Cameron and Lorne Michaels easily blend into America and contribute to another countries cultural output. But on RUclips, something naturally successful is actually happening. We've become big exporters finally! You had a great point that they were trying to dodge with their lives because if China had said they are making a bill that promotes their own content and what they believe promotes their nationalism the whole world would lose their minds and it's absolutely moronic to limit People's choice of content just because it's not Canadian enough.

The funny thing is, China already lowkey does this. Or maybe highkey, but like that’s the reason why China has bilibili and a youtube knockoff, whereas youtube (and all google products) are banned.

Yes. I only wish JJ would have pivoted his answer to talk about how this bill could hurt francophone creators by having their content pushed to a disinterested audience. Eg. a Quebec makeup youtuber wouldn't benefit from their video being recommended to either anglophone Canadians or Quebecers who don't care about makeup. Their click-through rate and average watch time would decrease. Whereas now they can do well within their niche with an international audience w/o having to worry about that.

Unfortunately due to the Cultural dominance of America it is hard to drive content that caters to nationalities other than American because in America it will always make more money. One observation I have living in the UK is that investment is far more effective than direct regulation. Investment in the BBC and the existence of Channel 4 as an investment vehicle focusing on developing younger talent has ensured that UK media is in a decent situation. I don't know the situation in Canada but that has worked here.

I'm shocked to see how nationalistic "liberal" Canadians are when that is so fundamentally against American liberalism. I am firmly left wing, but in Canada I expect I would be more of a centrist.

They are nationalistic when it comes to protecting their rent seeking interests, all of these politicians flabbergasted at Canadians watching American RUclips videos are fully supportive of the highest per capita immigration rates in the world. It's just false outrage masking their own benefit from the current system.

Dang! As a U.S. citizen, I do not want to see this bill pass. Everyone should have the right to see and watch what they want. If this bill passes as it is written, then Canadian RUclipsrs and those who wanted or hoped to make a living doing RUclips will mostly be over. (Unless you can quote "be Canadian enough") If this bill passes, it will also make U.S. based RUclipsrs have a much bigger competitive advantage over Canadian RUclipsrs who may make similar types of content within the algorithms that will ultimately be employed. This will defiantly harm creators in Canada.
