Here’s the ugly truth, China (and most Chinese corporations) does not share/uphold the same cultural values/laws as those in the west do. They cater towards their own stereotypical and racial bias. It affects every aspect of their culture.
The reason why practically 99% of hoyoverse characters are white or light skinned is because they value light skinned, white or even pale skinned features. Their main demographic for their games are young single Chinese male gamers. Those Chinese gamers like young pale skinned women. So making a character that doesn’t appeal to their main demographic affects their bottom line.
Yes, it’s unfair and irresponsible of them to take elements of other people’s culture and misrepresent them in their own products but I highly doubt they care or make an effort to change that behavior.

the wild part for me is that, its not like hoyoverse was given natlan and told to design them then they made everyone pale. no, they CHOSE to make natlan a region, THEN to make it like this. its not even consistant in lore, HOW do you go from ancient japan, germany, ancient china, sneznaya with old guns and fontaine using metal pipes and steampunk, to children wearing straight up sneakers and mavuika looking like a nascar driver? they are in a lava country, in a desert, surrounded by fire, and looking pale like that?

Ok… I’m a Latin American… as a mixed race from Europe, Indians and Africans…I don’t care about the skin tone of the characters… I don’t feel it’s disrespectful considering that where I’m from there is every single skin color under the sun…. Ranging from extremely dark to almost albino… heck even in my family I have a dark skin tone and my aunts and uncle have a very fair skin tone.

I have a simple take - what sells rules. If Hoyo could make it past the X tards rage and get fat W in revenue with chars, they were right for taking this obvious reputation risk. I have the same feeling towards shows like "Troy: Fall of a City", Jodie Turner-Smith’s "Anne Boleyn" or "Cleopatra". If they find success - it was the right call.
Hoyo even has a bit of an advantage over those examples, as they make FICTIONAL world over actual rewriting of history I mentioned above.
I dont see why having 1 company do what they want with cultures in they're fictional world should be called out like they try to do smth criminal. If you dont like what they do - leave, or ignore new releases to signal them failure in chosen strategy before they back off. But I only can assume It stings to be proven by market that they… know what they are doing and what audience they actually milk.
We talked this in Sumeru. They survived and have success in that region. There were also people angry and tons of "redesigns" ready to represent fantasy world region "properly". Well, Hoyo didn't get any problems with sellings of a game and literaly find a golden goose in Nahida.
And if you are pissed they can get away with such actions - be an adult, leave a place that doesn't work by rules you respect and find a place where grass is greener and representation is bigger.

As bad as it sounds, if they did have a multi-months black patch, it would be the Genshin killer. Other "complete" games can get away with having a region/section of a game being accurately portrayed, because it's within the whole package. But this type of banner game won't release a whole patch of black people because while it looks like ppl are speaking out, these ppl are a small %. If they released a black patch lasting many months, they may never recover. The majority won't type racist comments, they will just stop spending/playing. A black patch could put the full stop on Genshin for good even if the minority will be singing praises. If you release a completed game where one region is all black/africans, that's easy and you can be praised without any financial impact. But if you're a monthly patch game where for half a year you're in a black patch, you won't get criticized, your numbers will just never recover. Ppl won't type racist complaints, they will just silently go to another game the longer your black patch lasts. Ofc, you'd be thinking why they would do that when so many are angrily speaking up. If the "so many" here were true, they'd have a black patch. The thing is they can't have a black patch because that would end them.
If this was a completed game on release, they can have a properly represented region. For this type of game, they only ever intended to use different cultures/architects/landscapes/climates. There was never intention for each region to "represent". That's never in the plan of these types of games. The ones speaking up are a minority, it's just that internet makes it look like a huge drama since it's easy to leave comments. But no, this is not the majority. The majority doesn't even notice there's an issue. But if you had a full black patch, then they would notice, but only the minority will be singing praises.

And also, it doesnt have to be whole multi patch for the region. It just have to be 2 patch really, not a big deal at all for multi billion company. ACG community is always used to majority of cast fair skinned, then a minority of cast brown, and 2 or less or none black. The only exception is in a fully released game where a specific region is "properly represented", and that's only because the game is a complete release and it's one portion within the game (talking about typical ACG).

Like I get why the people are mad, if a game has a place based on Africa, you would expect to see characters with darker skin. #1 it's not Africa. It's pre-latin America, whose cultures and civilizations are extinct. Hence, they are more likely to look like South Indians rather than Africans.
#2 Hoyo artists are idiots. They'll use the same colour combinations over and over again for the characters of the same element. Like, look at how boring Emilie looks in that green. Likewise, for characters, they hate straying from light pink, magenta and light blue for Cryo, dark blue for Hydro, green for Dendro, Yellow and navy blue for Geo, red for Pyro, purple and pink for electro. Anemo seems to be the only element where there are more outliers, but even that is dominated by white and teal.
#3 they hate straying from skin colours that also worked before. Also, Cyno and Dehya aren't the highest selling characters so they might have learnt the wrong lessons here, despite it being clearly their own fault for messing up Dehya and Cyno's burst being too long for synergizing with everyone else.
#4 Their artists are creative but they are also people pleasers, hence they cling to their previous success and hate being experimental with newer regions and characters.
#5 Hoyo artists are idiots but I am not. I never thought Sumeru was a 1:1 of India and middle East, so I don't mind the inaccurate representation. But that doesn't mean I am not aware. I will enjoy it for what it is while I do not give a single penny of my money to them.
Vote with your wallets people, that's the only way these artists in a company would realise what they are doing wrong.

Although I may agree that this is not a fight worth fighting because Hoyo will hoyo, I want to point out that culture, its geographic region and its people are all connected. It is true that most nations in genshin are an amalgamation of different cultures of different regions around the world, but that does not give them the right to just "get inspired" (take) what they like from a culture while disregarding the aspects (the people) they don't. Maybe dark skin tones don't sell well and from a business perspective it's a bad move to make darker characters. But then how are you gonna showcase something from the culture of an african country. Imagine a fantasy game inspired by real world. You visit a place where the locals wear kilts and play bagpipes but their skin tone is darker than black. You effectively misrepresented Scottish culture, stole the fancy elements and put in arbitrary skin tones, the Scots would have a right to complain. It was the same with black washing of Cleopatra in Netflix. It is the same with Natlan. Imagine im genshin a WHITE pale character explaining to you an ancient african god and african ritual or musical instrument from some sub saharan african nomad tribe. How insulting is that? Either represent the culture you got "inspired" from as a whole or don't include it at all. This piss poor job is just rude towards actual leaving people's whose culture they have now effectively exploited.

For me, as someone that lives in Colombia specifically, i dont really mind the fact that Natlan has almost not darker skin characters, because at the end of the day, what matters is if that character has a good design. Now, Hoyo is just an ignorant company and is even more complemented by the fact that they never listen unless the competition do something that the community wants. They put endgame content not because the community wants it, but because Wuwa has pretty solid Endgame content, so they are trying to stay in the same level, they Changed Zhongli not because of the community, but to dodge the legal demands, because if they changed Zhongli for the community, im 100% sure that they could made Dehya a better character, but they not. So, at the end of the day, as long as they dont dont have any financial or legal issues, they won't anything. It sucks, but, once again if we as a community want to make Hoyoverse listed, and they are threatening us like sh*t, we have to treat with them like sh*t. How we do it? Simple, Dont spend money. Thats it, the budget its what hoyo cares and thats it. I honestly wish that the people that the people that works on Star Rail works also in Genshin, because i have the understanding that they actually listed to their community. They at least give a 5* character on celebration of his anniversary, and the character its pretty solid too, where as here you get 3 wishes and a Chicken.

Yes, Natlan is INSPIRED by African/Latin American natives. It doesn't take place in the real world. If hoyo wants to create an area that is inspired by Sweden and the characters are blue with pointed ears...that's something that they can do because it's a fictional game. It doesn't have to be realistic at all. It reminds me of people who get mad at artists who draw Egyptian women with pale white skin. I've seen it on Instagram. It's the artists choice alone on what they create and how they choose to express it, not the viewer. Thats what art is. The same goes for video games as well.

Honestly I've not really given much a damn about representation, at least in fiction. However it's slightly weird in hoyo's case that they put so much work into incorporating "real culture" into their regions and just happen to mostly avoid color even in the places you would expect to find a decent amount. To those who say "who cares", that's fine but I hope you'd keep that same energy if Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma and Fontaine was 80-90% black and Latino instead of the correct races...which every one of those regions happens to be. I gave Sumeru a pass for it but this seems a bit more on the nose. That said I expect nothing less from a Chinese company.
Side note, anyone else think Natlan clothing is a disjointed mess? Not even talking about the designs on an individual level, just their cohesion together. Looks like a thrift store opened a booth at a con.

Honestly bruh I stopped caring because of the bare minimum they did with Dehya and I dropped the game already. I think it's too much to call it racism but they're incredibly bias and Genshin still making bank regardless. I'm more interested in the sales numbers for these characters now. I absolutely have no problem about the skin colors in this game like i couldn't care less because of other hoyo games like HI3 and HSR those games have nothing but pale white characters but I'm not complaining bc all i care about is the story and gameplay, my main issue with genshin is. Why the fuck would they optionally use a cultural aesthetic that belongs to a country where the majority of it's people have a darker skin tone? Like the concept of a region-based game "inspired" or "based" whatever people wanna call it on real life places, imo hoyo should've just not included african culture inside of natlan at all and made it korea or another European country. You can't just take from a country you know that its people are gonna be of no use to you.

In all honesty, I really do not support either side on this. One side is demanding representation of cultures whose people from said cultures may not even care that much, its the western idea that everyone must be seen, everyone must be heard even if some care less about it at all.
I am Filipino, do I appreciate if my culture is also represented in Natlan? Yes. Do I expect natlan to have at least some values/aspects/culture similar to mine? No. Heck I live in one of the hottest regions in the world where the sun is cruel but im pale and whiter than most here.
The other side is blatantly clinging to their traditional cultural values (ie. White = good, etc.), barely even acknowledging the existence of people from all walks of life outside their norms and borders, removing/changing aspects that do not fit those traditional values they so stubbornly cling to.

The people complaining about representation are not the ones funding the game. Even if Hoyo designed a character to be true to the culture they were borrowed from, people of that culture or those who support wouldn't spend money towards said chatacter.
This isn't a matter of right or wrong. This is a free game and people expect the company to cater to their views so heavily without giving so much as a thought of supporting the game.

It's so disappointing, honestly. I want to support HoyoVerse, because I recognize the love and passion they put into their games, and the talent and skill of the artists behind them. But I find it impossible to support them when they keep disrespecting their OWN fanbase like this.
I already quit Genshin a while ago, but I still held onto the thought that maybe they could, I don't know, realize their mistakes and change their ways with Natlan's release or something, but nope, didn't happen and quite certainly never will.
