Like murdering foxes, among helpless sheep They slaughtered the house o' MacDonald Some died in their beds at the hands of the foe Some fled in the night, were lost in the snow. Some lived to accuse him, what struck the first blow But gone was the house of MacDonald”.

I didn’t know European history was so violent. All of this is kind of glanced over, at least it was in the schools I was in. It was kinda like: “They had some wars: 7 years long, 10 years long etc, but lots of prosperity and then they had Winston Churchill and The Beetles. Okay let’s move on! Anybody wanna learn about the trail of tears or Salem witch trials again? Did we talk about ‘nam yet today?”
Slawa Boga, would love to learn more about it to be honest. It’s very interesting to hear about all the terrible things the school systems like to pretend didn’t happen.
@Slawa Boga While the causes of the wars is more classical as Count mentioned, some of the acts committed were far from controlled. The throwing away of men's lives in the interest of a named man who never cared for them must be mentioned as well. Sprinkled among the travesties are moments of honor and courage by lords and downtrodden. Both aspects are able to teach a lesson and should be open for honest discussion and beneficial exposure. America as well. When it comes to killing people, no hand comes away clean. I would certainly listen to the Count give a blunt account of any event he saw fit, but I think he seems motivated to teach about his people to his people, and I find that honorable.

@EccentricSage If im not mistaken United Kingdom Mandates that all schools follow a standardised curriculum, the content of said curriculum is decided by the individual countries with the exception of Maths and English, this enables the native languages to still be taught. However the reason why such things like this, and England/Britains attrocities as an empire often gets brushed over is because we only teach History up untill Year 8 (12-13 years old) after that they can choose History as one of their limited classes... not many students do, so they never get taught about the horros of the Brittish Empire and our dark past, but it is in the curriculum, you can argue well teach it before they chose the extra classes, but then in reality how do you really tell a story like this to under 13 year olds?

that name was already taken by Dutch Loyalists to William of Orange after a coup in Holland... the entire reason he fled to England in the first place. 'making England Protestant again' was an excuse. William of Orange did not care for protestant vs catholic as he was born from both... he is the reason the civil war in The Netherlands ended and it was written that "from now and hence forth, any and all shall have freedom of conscience." Let's say historical heroes aren't without their controversies. as here in The Netherlands he is the great uniter, the hero of the civil war, defender of Holland against Spain, founder of The Netherlands, First King in the Bloodline of House Oranje-Nassau... but he also did this attrocety. “They have created a desert and called it peace” is a quote taken from an ancient British monarch (pre-angles, so Celtic Brit king) giving a speech warning of the Roman invasions under Claudias. The speech is preserved in the histories of Tacitus. The full quote (translated from the Latin to English of course) goes like this: “Robbers of the world, having by their universal plunder exhausted the land, they rifle the deep. If the enemy be rich, they are rapacious; if he be poor, they lust for dominion; neither the east nor the west has been able to satisfy them. Alone among men they covet with equal eagerness poverty and riches. To robbery, slaughter, plunder, they give the lying name of ‘empire’; they make a desert and call it ‘peace’.”
Slightly incorrect, it was during the campaigns in Scotland by the Roman General Agricola during Domitian's reign, around 30 years after Claudius' invasion.

There were occasionally a few bouts of foreign country periods such as the French revolution and tid bits of the glorious revolution, especially the industrial revolution, but we never strayed away from French, British, and American history into other country histories such as Russian, Spanish or Italian. Aside for the foreign revolutions, my high school history classes taught in that order. Yup. Schools don't teach a great deal of British history. A little bit of the Tudors, 3 years of WW2, and a footnote mention of the Romans. I didn't even know until adulthood that the Anglo Saxons came here from what is today Denmark. Still don't know the names of half the Kings of England throughout history. Wasn't taught anything about Napoleon, presumably because talking about him would mean mentioning Britain. Oh, there was one more thing. We were taught how evil we were because of the slave trade, right before launching into American history that we didn't need to know. Schooling in the UK doesn't teach anything useful. Not even our own history. It's just a place to put kids during the day, that is under the control of the State.
There were more Scots in the Redcoat army than there were on the Jacobite side. Culloden was a Lowland victory over the Highlanders, not an English win over Scotland.

“They have created a desert and called it peace” is a quote taken from an ancient British monarch (pre-angles, so Celtic Brit king) giving a speech warning of the Roman invasions under Claudias. The speech is preserved in the histories of Tacitus. The full quote (translated from the Latin to English of course) goes like this:
“Robbers of the world, having by their universal plunder exhausted the land, they rifle the deep.

We were encouraged to check out other foreign nation's history's that were not explained in detail or only had small bits of information based on the courses we were in, but good luck getting American kids too worried about sex and clout to care enough to bother. Hell I don't think any student other than the nerds and I even knew about the Russian revolution and the rise of communism.
Can confirm: don't get taught this at school.
It's all Henry VIII, there's a bit of Mary Queen of Scots, but it's watered down.
Great video Danks!
@The Cornfield They seem to focus on that a lot and take away for a lot of other important historic events
I was taught about this and the rest of the jacobites up until culloden.
Other than Tudors we had a load of Romans, Russians and America. My family are MacDonalds and this is the first lesson I've ever had on Glencoe.
James Kilgour just out of interest where in scotland are you from?
James Kilgour just out of interest where in scotland are you from?
Just to annoy Dank we should get him to do a mad lad on the Duke of Cumberland (AKA: The Butcher of Colluden) that will rial up the Fenian
Also, Edward Longshanks Hammer of the Scots.
Reminder that the vast majority of Scots backed the government in The '45 and were over the moon at the result at Culloden
Up the ra
Rile *
There were more Scots in the Redcoat army than there were on the Jacobite side. Culloden was a Lowland victory over the Highlanders, not an English win over Scotland.
Autoplays next suggested video: 'Why does Clan MacDonald hate Clan Campbell?'
I think I might have a slight hunch..
My Grandfather was a McAteer, apparently they suffered losses at Glencoe. I had heard him say something about it but watching this was intense. It's crazy what our forefathers endured. Really puts the struggles I complain about into perspective.
PS
I dig the fact you understand free speech, hold ture “I may not agree with what you say, but I’ll fight to the death for the right to say it!” Rock on dankula rock on
he doesnt care about social consequences, although he will try to back anyone from legal liabilities from saying something
Ether or, mad respect from across the pond
“I may not agree with what you say, but I’ll fight to the death for the right to say it”... gets banned
John Lorenzo lol as always the tragic comedy that is IRL lol
Honestly dank, this was fascinating. I would absolutely love a dedicated series to Scottish history, I would watch every second of it. You’re an amazing storyteller dude.
Ishikawa Goemon.
-his samurai father was killed
-he swore revenge, and became a ninja.
-got kicked out cuz he banged his sensei’s wife
-essentially became a Japanese Robin Hood
HERE IS THE MAD LAD PART
when he was captured. He and his first born son were sentenced to be boiled alive in oil. He took it like a man. holding his son above his head as long as he could, when he could no longer stand. He killed his son himself, as to spare him the agony.
Jesus christ that's some next level savagery
What omg...
tacos forlife don’t get me wrong many aspects of his life are a point of debate among historians. But if any of them are half true he’s a mad lad
A true hero
The day I become a Dad… I would do the same thing to spare my children.
I lived in North Carolina for 10 years and studied southern culture. There is a very high number of people with Scottish ancestry (there's even a Scotland county in NC). There's a reason why the Confederate flag design was based on the St. Andrew's cross, and why fried food and warm hospitality is widespread. Much of southern U.S. culture can be traced directly to Scotland.
Including the KKK as well
The average American knows more about Scottish History....
...than Humza Yousaf
Who?
Mate it's got nothing to do with you
couldnt spell justice if got hit with a law book
*Me, an average Chinese guy living in the Netherlands:*
Can relate.
I heavily reccomend Blackbeard as a madlad. We haven't had a pirate madlad yet and Blackbeard was pretty fuckin insane and entertaining.
Blackbeard was definitely a character, but not much is known about his earlier life, except his service aboard a naval ship as a privateer during Queen Anne's War. But he was a badass overall lol. Another pirate I would recommend is Edward Low, a guy that took pleasure in torturing his captives and even made a captain eat his own lips after they got cut off and roasted by Low himself
Blackbeard is overrated, Koxinga is the biggest mad lad pirate
Come on, what about black Bart? Don't think we've had a Welsh mad lad yet. Time to complete the triumvirate
@@Straker9063 I'd opt for Black Bart too bro! Most successful pirate ever
Gee that's just what RUclips needs is one more video about Blackbeard. Definitely prefer Black Bart.
So there was a fight involving the McDonald's and the Campbell's in a dispute. Sounds like a food war.
the scots be powerful
Don't you mean Food Fight?
@@GeneralTantzu That too. Food Wars is an anime.
@@michaelz8235 Weeb
@@THESLlCK And? What's your point? You are missing out.
We need a mad lads on Julius Caesar’s Gallic campaign.
That or one on Arminius and the battle of Teutoburg forest. Both well worthy of a mad lads episode
ima hope thats about asterix and obelix without checking first ^_^
I'd add Caligula to that list not many people can say they went to war with the god of the ocean
