Buying ipad air was my best investment I’ve ever made for uni even though it costed my entire lifetime savings (includes accessories). I no longer have to buy papers, no binders that takes 80% of my shelves, takes 30 secs to find notes from like 10 months ago, no need to carry 1 ton textbooks (nor buying one). I won’t have to restock my pens and pencils like I always do in high school. I do EEEVERYTHING on iPad. Since I’m in med school, its a literal life saver for me.

Honestly, each one of us is different in study style.👀 IPAD is NOT going to improve your grades instantly. It's your study consistency, focus and dedication that makes it happen. Study hard everyone. ✨

I actually have to contradict you there. I think for some people it actually can as my IPad helps me to keep track of my notes, my grades and my appointments. Also I personally have way more fun to create notes that are clearer which again helps me with studying. But I agree with you that it won’t magically change your grades and won’t work for everyone

I got an iPad Pro 2018 fro medical school 2 years ago. I actually am upgrading to the new 2021 iPad Pro. If you’re in medical school it’s a must, either that or a 2-in-one-laptop. In reality, for any university course you need a laptop for work and, especially for online learning, and also a tablet device with handwriting capability. The reason for this is how much work we have to do and the downsides to using paper books and notebooks which Is the WEIGHT and also keeping track of all that paper as it is fairly easy to loose. I know I lost very important notes for exams. It’s an EXPENSIVE buy. I spent 1200 dollars on just the iPad Pro plus about 300 dollars in accessories, however this expense can be maximized by buying 3rd party devices that can connect to multiple devices. I chose not to buy the magic keyboard and mouse but to buy a MUCH CHEAPER multi device Bluetooth keyboard and mouse that I can connect to multiple devices. That way I can use them with both the laptop and iPad. I also buy 3rd party cases which are A LOT cheaper than the ones sold by Apple and also MUCH more protective of the device. In fact the only devices I bought from apple are the iPad and Apple Pencil but everything else is 3rd party as the options for budget friendly great devices are much higher and they work with both the iPad and my windows laptops. That is another tip I would give. Instead of buying the very expensive MacBooks for school, consider windows laptops. Top of the line laptops are half or even less than that of the price of a MacBook and have way better specs and laptops with identical specs to MacBooks are even cheaper. Students WILL need both devices and windows has better budget friendly devices for students. Plus many school systems have problems Inter-phasing with Apple devices because they run on windows, not as much anymore but it is there and it is a consideration, especially when students need to print something as printing from Apple devices tends to be problematic. I admit I got along fine in university with just my laptop but I was also carrying a ton of books and paper which also broke my back whereas now I only carry a small backpack, when I used to go to school in person, that is big enough for my laptop since I still have to use it and my iPad plus mouse, keyboard, mousepad and computer stand. In total my backpack weighs about 17lbs, if I had binders notebooks and textbooks, well first I would be using a rolling bag because not everything fits in the backpack but it would weigh about 45lbs or more. My anatomy textbook in print has over 2000 pages and weighs by itself 9.5lbs

The iPad is not a productivity device when it comes to digital handwriting. Imagine having a peace of hardware that powerful which costs over a thousand dollars, but still can’t even right fast in university or school. Digital handwriting should not be a big deal in 2021, but yet it is. It should be smooth on the entry level iPad as well, but it isn’t. And apple is earning a shitload of money by selling stuff that can’t even support fast handwriting. It makes me angry.

  • @FlyingPigChannel
    @FlyingPigChannel 3 года назад +51

Personally, I think iPads are worth it if you learn best handwriting notes, and science has proven handwriting notes is more effective than typing notes. I've used an iPad 8th gen for school for about 6 months now, and it's pretty awesome and I love taking notes without having stationary or worrying about not having enough space on a page. However, if your sole purpose for getting an iPad is taking notes, I wouldn't recommend it since that's not a very good investment :).

Like you stated. An iPad is SUCH a versatile tool. Like a phone, an iPad can be taken anywhere just about, you just need a slightly larger bag to take the iPad with you. Or a nice carrying case.
Seriously, When you had the multiple choice questions and were just circling them, and the teacher wants them in class the next day, it's super easy to take that and print it off at the college. Print it off of their dime. Not yours. And you are able to do the assignment on the go without having to lug a folder or a bunch of papers. (however, make sure you have your device and pencil charged) and maybe include a battery pack if you will be gone for a long period of time.

There’s a lot of STEM students in the comments but iPads are incredibly popular amongst music students as well. It is literally THE BEST to have all your sheet music on one device instead of heaps of loose sheet music. You can have an entire opera on your iPad, instead of a massive physical score. It’s also super easy to study/make music, Good Notes even has music notation templates. The iPad was seriously the best purchase for studying music in college- you save so much paper, time and back strain! And it will make your life a breeze during auditions or impromptu performances when you have all your music in one place.

I got an iPad for this semester and honestly it was such a game changer for me.
Since most of my profs do hand out PowerPoints and Skripts to annotate I’m saving soo much money on printing. And since I’m also mostly taking math and chemistry classes it saves so much paper when I’m doing my homework digitally- like I have a whole binder just filled with homework and exercises just from last semester.
Plus it not only is more confident when sharing notes with your friends but also quite helpful to just share the screen of the iPad when working in a group online and you wanna explain the way you solved a certain problem (like we do this such much in my study group for my math classes when we compare our solutions because it’s so helpful to see what some else did to figure out how their idea works or not)
But in the end it all comes down to personal preference and not everyone can afford an iPad, but in my opinion it’s definitely worth the investment. Like I’ll be using mine through all my years at university and it will also be quite handy in my job later on.
And also if your thinking about buying an iPad: I can recommend to go with the smaller storage sizes because you will save a lot of money. Because pdfs honestly do not take up that much storage and I would probably only consider an iPad with bigger storage if you plan to work with pictures or videos on the iPad a lot.
And if storage gets a little short it’s actually cheaper to just buy an external hard drive - which can also be connected to the iPad itself if you get the air or the pro.

The only disadvantage is that you can get distracted quite easily, especially when you have “boring” classes, you definitely need some kind of self discipline. However I don’t regret buying an iPad for school at all and if you have a little more discipline than I do, it’ll only make things easier.

Before buying it I thought about saving up more money to buy a newer generation. As far as I know the iPad 6 is the cheapest one which is compatible with an apple pen. I got it short after I bought the iPad and I couldn't be happier with it!! I do recommend to get one with much storage. During the last semester I realised that having 128 GB is necessary! I always take my iPad to uni instead of my MacBook since it's handier in my opinion.

I have an ipad (old one) but it's such a shame because I don't fully utilize it for note-taking, instead, I mainly used it for Netflix. I found myself to be more comfortable to write and read notes on paper rather than on screen. I also found myself to memorize better with paper notes.
However, with all the Go-Green stuff, I am sure that it's environmentally better to take notes on an ipad as you can save a LOT of papers. I am currently 'training' myself to properly utilise the technology that we have today.

My school district provides us with iPads you get your first iPad mini in 4th grade, then a new regular one that you use from 5th to 8th grade, and then finally you get one in 9th grade which you use up until the end of high school (I do think things changed though because some kindergartners had iPads), however you do have to return them over the summer. We don't have to pay for them unless we damage them. And since they're mainly for school so there are some restrictions and the school version of an App Store. But before Covid hit since the restrictions were built into the WiFi you could do what you'd like on them at home. But now they're built into the iPad itself because of online school. These were originally supposed to be removed by removed by high school but they ended up changing that and keeping the restrictions after a few years because people were misusing them. They're monitored by the school district and they provide us with cases. My currently model is an iPad 5th generation. I *might* update with what iPad we get next year in 9th grade because at the time of writing this I'm in late 8th grade. If you want more info I wrote like an entire essay 😅
My school district provides us with iPads that are monitored by the school district and they're a major part of our school lives, I'm talking if you forget it for one day you're screwed. (I go to a public middle school and at the time of writing this I'm in late 8th grade) For me at least, you got your first iPad in 4th grade, but it was an iPad mini and you weren't allowed to use it during lunch or recess, you would leave it on charge at the school overnight and wouldn't be allowed to bring it home. Although in 5th grade I went to a gifted program with both 4th and 5th graders and my friends in 4th grade also had iPad mini's but were allowed to take them home. From 5th to 8th grade you use the same iPad and upload your stuff to google drive and then clear your storage every year, and from 9th to 12th grade you get a new iPad and then use that and repeat the same process every year. (Meaning I get a new iPad next year! :D) However I remember once in elementary school we went through the kindergarten classroom to get somewhere and all the kindergarteners had iPads. You don't have to pay for them, but if they're damaged then that is 100% on you to pay for the repairs. You keep them throughout the school year and then return them over summer. (Yes you can keep them over smaller breaks like winter, thanksgiving etc.) We have an off brand version of the App Store instead of the actual App Store with only education related apps, so we can't download games and stuff. However in 5th grade because it was our first day with our iPads that we would be using up until 8th grade, there was a trick you could use only upon the first day of getting your new iPad. So I did that trick, downloaded some games, blah blah blah, it was going great up until some time later when some people had to come and watch me delete it because they were aware of the fact that I had downloaded them. When my older sisters were in high school, high schoolers had access to the App Store and could download games or anything in particular they wanted with their new iPads (obviously not anything non school appropriate) but a few years ago they removed that most likely because students were misusing that privilege, I don't really remember the details. Similarly, discussing restrictions, in 5th/half of 6th grade (before covid hit) there were restrictions built into the WiFi so you couldn't goof off during school but when you got home and were connected to your home WiFi you could use the internet with way less restrictions (there were still some for stuff like illegal websites) so you could watch RUclips or do whatever it is as you please. However because of online school they're now built into the iPad itself. As for accessories all students are provided with 1 of 2 iPad cases and that’s it, although I think some students switched them out for their own cases and nobody really cared as long as the stickers on the back with your student information were visible. I happened to have gotten a few free stylus' from an event once and I use them for my iPad and they are amazing quality and it's pretty surprising considering that they were free. My older sisters are in university currently and one of them has an iPad given to her by the university she goes to and it is monitored as well. (However since the value has gone down they’re removing the monitoring so the iPad is 100% your property). I *might* update this comment when we get our new iPads next year.
*I may I have gone a bit overboard yes, but I enjoyed writing this*

I really love my ipad for note-taking (instead of paper and pen) and its useful for other things like entertainment and drawing/writing, but I much prefer typing essays and submitting things on my ipad. It is also a lot easier to make PowerPoints/presentations and use other things like excel on a laptop than an ipad. Ipads can make documents and do most things that laptops can but some things can be a lot harder (like the things I mentioned earlier). It honestly depends on what you are looking for...overall use (laptop) or a better hand-written notetaking device (ipad). I hope this helps!

I recommend getting an ipad that has big storage. Also think about what you’ll use it for, cater it to that.
I use an ipad for uni
It’s great that I could take notes digitally and annotate + highlight. I also save paper by not having to print out stuff.
It’s also great for submitting assessments because almost all of them are done digitally now.
Revising: easier because you can use “search” function even for handwritten notes
Easy colour coding without having to carry highlighters & different coloured pens.
    Very light.
Only negative is that some websites or files does not function as they should because iPad is still considered “mobile”.
Other than that, I use my iPad most of the time.

If the sole purpose of buying an iPad is for studying, then the iPad 8th Gen (2020) will be enough. The screen size is very much adequate (10.2 inches). It also works great in word processing, creating powerpoints, and spreadsheets. However, some functionalities in MS Excel for example are not available in iPads such as complex statistical analysis.
32gb of storage is just enough if you do mostly web-based tasks and do not download a lot of music and moviees/series. There is also a 128gb variant if you want an extra space, if ever.
However, Apple’s September event is just almost 2 months away so maybe you could wait when they release the 9th gen.

In that regard, I was initially thinking about Kindle for going easy on my eyes, but you can't take notes with Kindle. I was also thinking about Onyx boox, remarkable 2, etc. but these are quite expensive, not easily available in North America, so it only leaves me with iPad. I wonder what people do to make iPad reading experience comfortable for eyes?

From what I experienced, an Ipad isn't an essential. I think it can be really difficult to do everything in an Ipad when you have hundreds of papers to learn. It could be good if you don't have big big classes but in medicine, it's really time consuming. Also, I find that I study better on paper for some reason. And also : I don't know if all Ipad models have this issue but mine is a 2017 model and it takes forever to charge and I am not exagerating. I probably need 2/3 hours to get 20% of the battery filled. But it's really a personal thing. I am just wondering how people who take pretty notes on their Ipad, zooming, drawing and everything do it because it takes so much time

Plus for some subjects my friends typed basic notes, sent me and I added some drawings, charts or other extra things before sharing with our small group. And I don't know why, but when I had a presentation, every proffesor acceped that I had my notes on a tablet. When it was on the phone, they said it was unproffesional.
My biggest problem is that opening google docs in a desktop version in a browser and not in an app is a nightmare and I need it often; second is that goodnotes is in English so it doesn't read what I write in my native language and it is inconvinient to search manually for everything.

I was fine without using my iPad 7 in high school. I hope it makes my life easier in university with 2-3 years of studying to be refrigerator/HVAC technician. I’m just nervous, I failed 12th grade with 3 F’s and I passed next time. I gave myself a year off because I didn’t know what to be, and also because I don’t know if I’ll be safe there knowing that I failed once. Overthinking of how university works and that made me feel anxious and devoured me through few years but anyway. I just hope I can make my parents proud, especially my dad because he will invest to bring me finally to university. I hope I don’t drop out and that university doesn’t give me debts or something like that. Nice video, I give it a thumbs up and favorite.

      go to trade/vocational school bruh
you wanna be an engineer yeah no problem too lots of practical courses out there instead of scam universities
some trade jobs like woodworking also have better salaries than jobs requiring degrees

how about the storage? When you finish let's say a whole school year, do you have storage for the others to come?

The default storage of an ipad Pro is 128gb, and the new ipads Air the default is 64gb, and when you purchase you can choose the ones that have more storage. I've been using an older ipad for two years of college now, and I still have storage 😁

Thank you for doing this! I am planning on buying an iPad for college, and you convinced me to do it.
