I did the voice/sound for Fork Maiden and Mama. I think a few other things, but I can't quite remember. I'm so happy to have been a part of this game, however. Boom-shoots are the best kinds of games! I remember that there wasn't really a script so to speak, I was just told to come up with whatever I could. Originally, the line I made up for Mama was "What've you done to my daughters!" and her death was "My eyes...are open..." Her placement in the game however, ended up before the daughters are introduced, so the line didn't make sense. That's why it was chopped and spread out for both the intro and death line.
I always found it interesting how the most powerful items in the game are all things holy or unsullied: The sword, hallowed health, priceless diamond, and of course, the bar of soap. In all of my playthroughs of the game, I was always so incredibly relieved to see any of these lights in the darkness after enduring grueling hellscape after grueling hellscape.
The way DUSK toys with eldritch stuff is really expertly done. The first time I beat Erebus Reactor and saw the ceiling open up to reveal the skycrapers I was absolutely dumbfounded. Also the DUSK HD remaster dropped recently with so much cool stuff in it. This game is the gift that keeps on giving
It really does do a good job of capturing what truly made games like DooM great. People think DooM is all about slaughtering arenas of monsters, which is what Serious Sam and Painkiller games are. But those classic id shooters throw you into a giant open world to explore and kill enemies in whatever strategic way you see fit, while managing your resources and hunting down secrets. You're rarely locked in to an arena, and can run away at any time while the monsters pursue you. It had the survival elements too, which makes the game soooo much more fun and full of depth than just slaughtering your way through arenas.
I was wondering why the new doom games felt somehow lacking compared to the originals and I think you hit the nail on the head. There's a lot more depth to the original, the encounters could almost be seen as puzzles. Modern doom with its infinite glory kill provided supplies and locked down arenas is a huge step down in strategic depth
I love all Dooms, except 3, and I love Dusk. If you are saying that Doom 2016 or Eternal is simpler just because some nonsense survival elements - you know nothing about fight mechanics of Doom Eternal. Turn off your baby duck syndrome If you compare Doom Eternal to Serious Sam - you most likely didn't beat the game on Nightmare difficulty. If you don't like visual style, that's ok, but everything else you are saying here is BS
@@Z3rgatul I love doom 3. And I beat doom 2016 and eternal on Nightmare. I think they’re solid games. But they often lock you into arenas to fight waves of monsters like serious Sam and painkiller style games. And yeah serious sam had moments of finding secrets. But combat was mostly locking into arenas where you fight waves of monsters. As soon as you kill the waves the game lets you go free so you can continue to explore. That in my mind most definitely makes the game more shallow than a truly open experience where you can go anywhere any time. I don’t mind if it’s done occasionally. But games like serious sam and the new doom games are mostly about being locked into arenas of fighting waves of monsters.
This game's introduction to Horror (the enemy) is also brilliant, although it lacks the sense of shock that the Wendigo introduction does. It's horrific heavy breathing coupled with the darkness and cramped corridors added to an immense sense of dread.
You also aren't expecting just how _fast_ it is! From the breathing and close quarters I was expecting something like the forkmaidens or cowgirls, or maybe that one psychic enemy archetype where maintaining LOS hurts you. Nope, that thing comes out like it's pants are on fire!
@@Slysheenthat's most of the horror's horror (lmao) imo. Its unnatural speed coupled with its unnatural movements, in addition to its constant screaming made me feel incredibly overwhelmed my first playthrough, and then the sudden *SNAP* followed by complete silence when they die is unnerving too...but just looking at the model in isolation is goofy as hell. Its all of the elements combined that make it so effective
Interesting. After finishing the game I still think that Episode 1 is the greatest in terms of how it captures the "Dusk feel". It feels more than the pure Lovecraftian horror found in the later episodes. The rural areas, the corn, a Church....that is Dusk for me.
It has more familiarity. The definition of Backwoods Horror, right along the lines of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It feels real and it that it could happen to you.
DUSK is mainly an action shooter, but i find its environments and enemies to be far more horrifying than many horror games. Haunted, demonic, ferocious, incomprehensible, filled with blood and gore, and as you said, feel deeply wrong. None of it is really explained, how these horrifying places and creatures even came to be. And you are all alone, seemingly the only non demonic thing in all these places, only accompanied by a voice that is watching you and seems to be toying with you. Complimented by the music which can also sound strange and hard to comprehend. Maybe it's also the low res graphics, which for some reason i feel like they make things more unsettling.
I think you definitely make a good point about the low polygon graphics adding to the creepiness cause after watching the recent trailer for Dusk HD that showed off the enemies. Gotta say their redesigns didn't freak me out as much I thought they would. The added detail takes away the more uncanny valley nature of the original version
Im def still excited to replay the game with hd models but will most likely stick with the originals on subsequent replays. Its the same reason the remakes of the N64 Zeldas arent as creepy, the lack of detail is a huge factor to unsettling retro graphics
Was expecting the Mandalore to do an in depth analysis of this particular aspect of DUSK. But his whole video as basically: *hurrr durrh guns go boom* Thanks, exellent video. I think DUSK's action packed gameplay is just the surface of the whole thing. Was genuinely impressed by it. Didn't expect the game to be this good. Didn't expect to be so immersed in it by the end of the game. Also the ''reveal'' at the end was the cherry on top. Top notch game. One of the best out there for sure.
I very much agree with your feeling of isolation in old FPS games. For me it has always been an important part. Whether it's Doom, Duke Nukem 3d or Unreal. Most excellent video.
Under the mayos video on the game is what made me interested in playing the game and playing the game was fire 🔥 I gotta thank under the mayo for suggesting this game 🎮 🙌
The reason this game stands so tall in terms if quality us because it lures you into thinking its going to be yet another Doom/Quake derivative throwback shooter, and then thrusts upon you a mountain worth of its very own unique atmosphere and cold, sinister charm. Not to mention some of the tightest controls I've ever taken hold of in an FPS. If this were to have come out in 1998 it would have killed Quake II and Unreal. I genuinely believe so.
I always wanted to return to dusk But as one of the soldiers . To see why their goal was . Its clear that the military and the cult wasn't always allies (There are time when the 2 factions are fighting with each other) and plus Who else wouldn't want that? From how the first chapter has you seeing brutalized corpses with military uniforms, I think it's fair to assume the soldiers you fight are undead, or otherwise not in control of their own will.
Its impressive to make something as ridiculous as a legless dog in a wooden cart terrifying just by how its combat mechanics work. Also Beautiful Blasphemy is my favorite track in the game.
The dog is both incredibly goofy and incredibly grotesque and disturbing to me lmao, I think bc it reminds me of that old david firch video of the guy with the talking dog (Edit) and beautiful blasphemy gives me chills EVERY time i listen to it, ive never heard a song quite like it (or many other ambient dusk tracks)
Great video!!! I'm always so happy when someone points out the creepiness of Dusk, and your analysis was spot-on!!! It always ranges from somber to unsettling to horrifying even if you are armed to the teeth. I'd say that it does horror better than the original Doom. While doom has some great disturbing imagery like you pointed out and a beautiful, grimy color palette that seems to miss from modern games (from what i've see at least) and even its reboot, the relatively upbeat soundtrack was jarring and kind of ruined the atmosphere for me, to the point where i sometimes put on my own playlists in the background XD it couldnt compare to the top-notch atmosphere of Dusk in my opinion. re: Dusk's creepy details, I'm still not sure what's going on with Jakob's face. It kinda looks like he's wearing a human face as a mask. Or maybe it's the dried blood from his victims that's stuck around his eyes?
As a lore nerd myself who loves the worlds built on games and books, I'd like to learn more about the story of the town of Dusk, how did the cultists get there, what happened to Dusk Dude, if there's a connection with Quake.
thats true , i recently played dusk and while i was advancing thro the level i felt the same thing, you start in a Forrest than slowly moving to an abandoned town , military complex , labs and end up in an alien world/dimension always feeling like you're a stranger
Great review dude! Been playing Dusk long enough to say due to the high amounts of mobility and high reactivity to the player I'm never left unsatisfied with my time spent playing.
If you enjoy retro-flavored movement shooters, i'd HIGHLY, HIGHLY reccommend Ultrakill. It's published by the same guys as Dusk and is an absolute masterpiece to behold, it's actually slightly beaten out Dusk and Doom Eternal as my favorite game ever made. It's got a really active community, too, we usually don't bite
While I agree about DOOM losing its horror aspects is a great loss, the first three games (So DOOM 1, 2 and 64, not 3) almost make a point of the player shredding the forces of hell to bits through the little story they have. They didn't shift focus until 3 and then 2016, where they dropped one of those two aspects. And I love how DUSK does its hardest to be both make the player feel on the back foot, while still being an absolute shredfest to play
