- 'Under the Gun' by Deep Purple off of their "Perfect Strangers" album which came out in 1984 and featured Roger Glover on bass.
So, Lynn and I are going to see Deep Purple tonight at Bethel Woods. YES (Steve Howe's camp) is opening! I've seen both bands a number of times and probably would have passed on the show, but for the fact that it's sort of a two-for-one deal. Now that I think about it, the last "2-4-1" deal didn't work out very well. That was a few weeks ago with Daryl Hall/Elvis Costello. It was, without a doubt, the worst concert I've ever seen/heard. Neither guy can find a note anymore. In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing Deep Purple for what will, most likely, be the last time. The "Gramps with Amps" tour is how one person referred to it. They've got a new album out and it really sounds good... because it sounds like old Deep Purple. Check out "Portable Door". Oddly enough, they are not playing anything off of this (Perfect Strangers) album. I always look over the setlist before a show in order to plan my escape. I have never stayed for an encore by any band (not even for Rush). At Bethel Woods, we tend to leave extra early. We love the venue, but leaving is a complete disaster. The one time we left at the very end of a show (very long Lynyrd Skynyrd story) it took us an hour and a half just to get out of the parking lot.
Lynn just popped in to remind me of where our seats are... in the lower bowl, much closer than where we usually sit. Normally, I like to sit back a bit to take in the whole production, to give the sound a little time to breathe, and most of all, to avoid people standing. I usually put the blame for not wanting to stand on Lynn's height, which is "now" 4'-9", but it's as much to do with me wanting to remain seated while watching the show. When I met Lynn I was told that she was 4'-11", so either someone's shrinking or someone lied on her resume. When I bought these tickets I figured that, with the average attendee's age being 65 or over, the chance of someone standing for any significant amount of time would be nearly 0%. I did the same for a Roger Daltrey show a few years back and it worked out fine. Lynn also reminded me that this is the last show of Bethel's season. Sadly, it looks like the show is gong to be poorly attended. The seats I bought are selling for $50 apiece less than what I paid. I hate when that happens.
I'm playing the MBJ Guitars Double-Bit bass that was built for me by Joe Kruse.
www.mbjguitars...
that was freakin awesome!
Thanks a lot!
Thanks much, Troy! I totally forgot about that album.
My pleasure! Great album!
About 2 weeks ago i 'rediscovered' Perfect Strangers (the track)and how this era of DP is great rock music.
Great selection & performance TJH! 👍🤘
Yeah, I believe it was their most popular album ever. Thanks a lot, take care!
Nice driving bassline. Top stuff Troy.
Thanks 👍
Classic!! There really is something to a straightforward bass line I can finally appreciate lol. 👍✌🤘This also makes me think of Jimmy Bain a tiny bit.
Truth! Me too, though it took some time.
What a cool track! Perfect Strangers is a great comeback album 💜 Perfect job, Troy 💯
Great point about Perfect Strangers!
They didn't play one song off the album, if you can believe that! Thanks!
TROY !!! You always have the coolest basses and great song picks. - Mike in California.
That one looks like a Klingon weapon of war 🤣🎸
Thanks so much Mike!
KILLER cover Troy !!! BTW, the latest Deep Purple album (#1) is fantastic, highly recommend it.
Thank you!!! They played a few songs off of it and it was great! I only knew 4 of the songs they played, but it was still great.
Damn Troy that MBJ slays! Great punch.
It's basically got Spector guts. I'm glad you liked it.
Great track, song, band, and YOUR PLAYING 🤘😎🤘!! I do like their newly released track as well 🤘!!
Thanks!
Amazing cover, as always.💯👍
Thank you very much.
Could you please make a video on your bass collection? You have some really cool geetars. I really love the bass you are using in this video, the tone is perfect! 😎 Great video as always 👊
Troy has done that some time back. However, I am not certain if he has made any small changes to his collection since.

@@TJH3113 the MBJ is my favorite! What a great custom 🤘 Tell him I need a 5 string please 😁
@@HighlandViking 5's and 6's are his specialty. He builds for Carl Thompson, so you get that same quality for a bit less. His link is in the text beneath the video, if you want to take a look at what he does. My basses are a bit on the plainer side... because I'm a pretty plain guy.
@@TJH3113 I like plain..lol..it looks cool and sounds great 👍.. thanks for the info 👊
Sounds great...as usual. Hoping all is well with you and I hope you enjoyed the show.
Thank you Sam! We actually had a great time at the show. The bands were great and we met some nice folks.
Roger Glover was the bassline to many a great hit and even some lesser known not hits. Great cover, always nice to see a Deep Purple one on the channel....
😂🤨
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it.
Great tune choice and excellent playing, Troy! 🤘
Thanks a lot!
When I lay down hard earned money for ANY SHOW I go to, I stay till I'm literally forced out!🤣 I'm one of the first to get to my seat and one of the last to bid adieu to the cushion that caressed my caboose while I jammed and grooved! BUTT, I will say there have been a few shows in my history that The Promoter couldn't have paid me enough to stay! DYING at "Gramps with Amps"! Way better than "The Rolling Bones" Fo Sho! I was floored when I read your confession of never staying for An Encore...not even RUSH (as I wipe away the tears)😂 Chit, when I go to a movie, I stay until the Lights go on AFTER the credits have rolled and left the house! I absolutely dig seeing you sing and play Troy...for a few seconds you are Up On Stage and it works! Enjoy the Show tonight with your Lynn and hoping Steve Howe Saves The Day Musically! MOO From COW-lumbus, Ohio 👋
Before I met Lynn I'd only been to a handful of concerts, aside from Rush. I just don't like crowds, but I never missed a Rush show. If it weren't for Lynn I probably wouldn't go to any shows... except for an occasional Broadway show. So, it's a bit of a compromise and she's on board with the routine... arrive early/leave early. Movies? The last time I was in a theater was for "Zombie Land". The show was great. We met some cool people and both bands sounded really good. Steve Howe's playing is a bit sluggish though.
Perfect. As EVER. ❤
Thanks so much.
Encores can be AMAZING. I went to the True Colors Festival years ago, also known as the Geezers for Gay Marriage tour. Cyndi Lauper was technically the headliner, but a reunited Erasure was stealing the show. Lauper played a short set, and then she and Margaret Cho said Erasure was coming back out on stage. Holy crap, Vince Clark and Andy Bell were on fire. They played deep cuts I never heard, but most of the audience knew and jammed out. Vince Clark is a Digital Man one man band, but he managed a good guitar solo in there too a couple of times.
I agree that Perfect Strangers is a good album, and the sitcom of the same name was also the first post-Cold War themed sitcom.
For me, any encore would not be worth the discomfort I'd experience leaving a packed show.
You're right. Perfect Strangers is the best Deep Purple come back album. Many people think that Roger Glover doesn't play much because he uses the pick. Really good job again and we're waiting something from the Perpendicular(the next best come back album)!!!!
Glover is really good. It's just hard to stand out when you've got top-shelf guitar/keys/vocals in front of you.
@@TJH3113 You're right. Also a top drummer, I would add.
Fantastic cover! This album came out my senior year of HS. I wore out 2 cassettes before CDs became a thing. Now of course I have it in mp3 format.
PS - I'm sorry Lynn lied on her resume 😂
Thanks a lot! I love this album! They didn't play anything off it, which was surprising... still a great show though.
@@TJH3113 I'm glad it was a fantastic show, and it just seems so odd to me that they don't play anything off of that album. I would love to know what the reasoning is for that.
@@Tracer9GTRider8 They played a lot of new stuff, which is usually not something I'm thrilled about, but it sounded really good and they were really enjoying themselves, so it was a treat to watch.
@@TJH3113 that's fantastic!
Thrilling Troy. Myfist time ou of bed in over a month Troy.
i'''e been quite ill for a while. Missed you. Glad to be back..
Thank you Marvine. I'm so sorry to hear that you've been feeling poorly, but happy that you are on the mend. What was it? Love, Troy.
@@TJH3113 I have not been able to walk for over a year. I have severe arthritis all over instead in my spine. I thouht Tom told you I was illl. marvi Marvine
Nicely done Troy ;-)
Thank you Jonathan.
❤
Yo could you give September Rain by Makoto Matsushita a shot? Very simple and disciplined bass line but fun and groovy.
I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
underrated song

I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
Are your picking fingers sore? 😂
Great , great job 🎸
Not on this one... it's a nice, leisurely tempo.
Thanks Art!
Another awesome song selection. Could you cover some King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard sometime?
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I'll check them out. I don't think I've ever heard anything by them.
@@TJH3113 judging by your bass covers, i think you'll like them. They restored my faith in new music lol! Watch them play live, ill drop a link. I listen to their boot legged stuff thats recorded live because their such a good jam band

This is them playing Hot Water live
OK What brand bass is that? Great cover as always!!
MBJ Guitars. Joe Kruse has been working on my basses for years and I finally got around to having him build one (or two) for me. Thanks so much!
You must be this tall ___ to attend the concert...
Truth.
You're saying u have no means of changing tempo of a track - with today's technology?😂
No, I guess I'm saying that I can't be bothered.
