Wonderful video! So truly, this reminds me on a quote from Karl Lagerfeld. He was once asked about elegance and expensive clothes. He replied "there are women in Africa who are wrapped in simple fabrics and carry clay jugs on their heads. They walk with more elegance than you can ever imagine". Thank you Marie Anne.

This video makes me grateful for my grandmother. When I was a little girl she always wore a beautiful brooch on her coat. She wore pearl studs in her ears and her engagement ring. I asked her why she didn't have more jewelry. Her advice: it is better to keep in a few beautiful pieces you will cherish forever or that were gifted with meaning than to buy and wear cheap costume jewelry. This made an impression upon my mind that has lasted until today.

“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated”~Confucius. Literally, this print hangs on my bedroom wall, next to my closet! I rarely wear more than stud earrings, either tiny diamonds or tiny gold studs, my wedding band, and my watch. That’s about it. I’ve always thought of my watch as my jewelry. Simplicity is a way of life. Why we strive to complicate matters is hard to understand. You have to be careful about whose advice on style you’re listening to. You’re always my go-to French chic lady. Justine Leconte is the only other French chic style expert I will even watch. Thank you so much! Xx

You just made me realize that simplification is very very imoprtant, not just for style, but for mental hygiene as well. Every time I lust for a new piece of clothe, I am stepping away - not closer - to closet happiness, because by acquire it, I will take away excitement for the pieces I already own, and be forced to deal with the overload, forced to discard, forced to choose later on. So for one minute of pleasure as I buy a new piece, what I am really doing is setting myself up for even more morning frustration and nothing-to-wear anxt. A new piece adds to the mental load, doesn't free it. Wow, thank you!

As a woman who has loved clothes & accessories all my life, even as a young girl, I am finding as I get older (65 now), I am simplifying more these last several years, sometimes just wearing my fav hoop earrings I have in both gold & silver, & maybe a couple rings. When I do wear a necklace, most of the time I will skip bracelets...etc. I guess I am evolving!

One of my most vivid clothes shopping memories is when I was trying on these fabulous black wool flannel dress trousers in a boutique in London (straight cut, side pockets, belt loops), and stepped out of the dressing room to see them in a bigger mirror -- I asked the proverbial question "but what would I wear with them?" A very fashionable English woman who was shopping with her daughter said "Do what French women do! Wear the black trousers with a fabulous classic white shirt tucked into the trousers and add a classic black leather belt!" I was shocked at how SIMPLE the solution was. I bought the trousers and wore them at least once a week with a wonderful blouse / shirt in a basic color (many times a silk blouse - light grey, camel, dark blue/green were some of my favorites), added black leather booties & a black leather belt, and always looked smashing. Keep It Simple!

I actually lay my outfit out the night before (otherwise I get anxious). I must admit, with COVID-19, I have gotten lazy & wear the same outfit over & over. Due to medical issues, I am at home all of the time. I go out rarely. However, when I do go out, I want to look chic, simple elegance, put together, comfortable & confident. Your video lit the match to the flame to get me going again about my style, confidence, looking & feeling good. I have not been feeling good & looking in the mirror makes it worse. No more. With your journal in hand, I am ready to simplify my style, life & ready to invite calm excitement back into my life. Sorry for the long narrative, but you have really boosted my confidence that I can be stylish again in every area of my life. Merci 😄 ❤️. Cheers 😉 🌷

Marie-Anne, I couldn't agree more. Both life, and wardrobe, benefit hugely from simplicity. It also frees up time to enjoy living. Merci beaucoup pour le "simple chic" cadeau. :)

You said it, Marie! I never overaccessorize or wear over the top hairstyles. When I go to Europe I am never spotted as an American. No offense to Americans, but I grew up in an area where the women dress like the cast of “The Sopranos “. I never wanted to look that way. I think I was wise to listen to my instincts. Thank you for your advice, I really enjoy your videos.

Key words... Simple, elegant, classic. You say it all the time and that is what I go by. I was lucky to have around me, as I was growing-up, women who taught me that ¨less is more¨. I was very lucky!!! Joyeux Noël et Bonne Année, Marie-Anne.

I wear good understated jewelry. I don't over accessorize. I stopped listening to complicated style advice years ago. It was so stressful. I don't listen to them anymore. My style is classic and that's not complicated. I listen to you, because you give me the kind of style advice that is valuable. Thank you for being here for us.

Best advice I have ever heard. Unfortunately, a lot of people are actually trying to sell products and talk us into buying too much of everything! The more we buy, the more $ they make. I have stopped watching a lot of channels who are giving advice to purchase things. Makeup, skincare, clothing, etc. After awhile, their videos seem like one long commercial. I truly appreciate your honesty and great advice. Thanks!

Marie-Anne - My Mother who resembled you quite a bit was very stylish. She always taught me that less is more and did dress very well but never overdressed. She loved suits, simple jewellery, lots of different shoes and light makeup but always red lipstick. She had beautiful white skin like yours and gorgeous dark hair - short and always styled simply. Love your videos! Thank you so much!

Love this and agree 100%. I often feel like I can't wear prints because I have naturally curly hair. I honestly feel like textured/curly hair is an accessory. Is that crazy? I only wear minimal, small jewelry pieces. In fact, I have very little jewelry in general. Less is more. Love your videos and content. It's a pleasure to watch you while I enjoy a glass of red wine. Cheers!

    Merci Marie-Anne!
I use The Rule of 8s. Count to 8: count one for each of these: each color, each pattern, each detail, (like belt, scarf, tassel on the shoe, or hair clip, or nail polish), each pattern, and then count each piece of jewelry (earrings count for 2). Should add to no more than 8. Simple rule.

Hi Marie-Ann. Thank you for putting simplicity into perspective. You clearly outlined what it entails. Simplicity can be taken to so many levels of one's life and helps to focus on the important elements of fashion, food or whatever you are doing. Can be a valuable tool to organize and manage one's life. True that we get confused due to information overload. Simplicity is the 1st step to dress timeless and chic. Great advice and nicely done. Thank you.
