    Sir, you are the best. I have tried to learn this in High school, Prep-course for Med school, and now trying to learn it in Med school. Finally, thanks to you, I completely understand the principle! Thank you!

    Depends upon the charge of the particle. Usually it is an ionized hydrogen with an abundance of negative charge. there will most likely be a directional block in the source of this ionized particle stopping the positively charged particles from traveling, thus counterclockwise acceleration. Changing the polarity of the magnet will allow the same pathway to accelerate positively charged instead of negative.

    excellent video, however the magnetic field should be in the opposite direction for a positive ion to spiral in that path

    Are the protons inside the plates? Are the plates empty? Also, what would happen to the particle if the polarity didn't switch, what would the trajectory be? Thanks

    when the charge is inside the space between the two plates, it is acted upon by a coulomb force of attraction from one one of the plates.. and a force acting on any body causes it to accelerate as per one of newton's laws..
    so an accelerating charge enters the dees everytim. this causes it to have a radius larger than the previous cycle..

    a) the plates are metallic..
    b)when the charge emerges out of the negatively charged plate and if the polarity didn't switch, it will again be attracted towards the same negatively charged plate..

    when the charge is inside the dees, the charge will move along a circular trajectory, when it is in the region between the plates, it will accelerate towards the negatively charged dee but along a linear trajectory..

    Dear Samia Zaman T=2 pi r/v it is time period of revolution or time=distance/speed ,so particle moving in a circular path travels 2pi.r distance / speed of particle. and v is speed not pd

    why wouldn't a charge with negligible mass not accelerate? what has mass to do with the coulomb force of attraction on a charge..
    when the charge is inside the space between the two plates, it is acted upon by a coulomb force of attraction from one one of the plates.. and a force acting on any body causes it to accelerate as per one of newton's laws..
    i hope you get the point..

  • @RichardKovacsics
    @RichardKovacsics 11 лет назад

    The video is correct. If you have a positive charge and it is moving to the left to start, as in the video, and a magnetic field going up, as in the video, the motion of the particle should be out of the screen, or toward you, just as in the video. You may have been confused because the right hand rule applies to electron current which is negative, and thus would point in the opposite direction just as you said, but since this is a positive charge, the force vector would be equal and opposite

    Why wouldn't the proton strike the Dee when it enters it? The whole reason particle accelerators are housed in vacuums is so the accelerated particle doesn't inadvertently strike an atom.

    First of this is not a cyclotron it is a syncrotron
    ie the magnetic field is incresing with proportion to the increase of mass of proton(heavy particle)...
    now in case of an electron, the mass increases soo rapidly due to the speed that it is impossible to increase the magnetic field with some speed
    hence a proton or an alpha particle is used
    N welcome :D

    • @thequantaleaper
      @thequantaleaper 8 лет назад

      If I understand your question correctly, you're asking if the proton goes into the 'Dees,' right? I am not sure, because it's hard to find absolute information online, but the 'Dees' are open inside. I would imagine that as the protons are emitted by the source, most end up impacting the 'Dee' material and terminating, but others on the right trajectory stay parallel to the material and make it to the end where they exit through the deflector.
