Russian SUBMARINE hard AGROUND and we moor in a BLASTED rock - Ep. 212 RAN Sailing
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- Join us when we sail to a giant rock in the Baltic Sea where they have blown out a harbor. We take the dinghy R2D2 on a seal safari and go to the crash site where a Russian submarine went aground during the Cold War!
We are a Swedish couple who have sailed the world since 2016 while sharing the adventures here on RUclips. In 2019 our daughter was born and we bought a bigger boat to continue sailing as a family.

Malin, Johan & Vera
I have followed you two since you first began you sailing adventures. I was so happy to see you have sun glasses for your beautiful new daughter. I am very sad when I see so many folks who are sailing the oceans of the world with babies and young children who forget their eyes are very precious and are being damaged even more than the eyes of adults when on the ocean and lakes with out sun glasses even when the sun is not so bright. Fair winds and good sailing. God bless you and your new daughter. Shalom
I enjoyed hearing Johan's account of the "WHISKEY on the Rocks" incident. Well done, Johan!
Vera 😎 ❤ 😁. And I remember that Sub running aground. The Swedish Navy were brilliant with their "standoff" against the CCCP. 👊🏼 💥 😊
Its like getting a history lesson in every episode. I love it.
Your baby has a cute smile, happy baby means good parents. Keep up the good work.
Great job as always. Thanks.
Vera is adorable in her sunglasses and bonnet. She seems to love the water. 😊😊
Those are grey pelted Swedish rock sausages :P
Also the incident of the submarine was fascinating as well.
(point at the seals) They look like sea dogs ... but not like Barry.... Priceless. A great adventure and another well done video. Vera is getting so big and "busy"! Thanks Mahlin, Johan, and Vera!
the ol seadog may as well be on the moon for all the distance between you guys and him right now....probably the furtherest apart you can be on the planet.....just a thought. Good to see he is still part of your journey.
I remember hearing about the sub but back then, the world was much bigger and these were stories from distant lands. Very interesting history.
Sea dogs, but not Barry. 😂😂Nice.
Great episode guys, really enjoyed the story of "The whisky on the rocks" and, as ever, Vera is so damn cute!
Loved Malin's comment when rowing the boat (or trying) that this won't be in the video. Glad it was left in , so cute. Great video guys. stay safe.
Always enjoy your latest video! I like your quiet style. Your daughter Vera is going to be a big sailor soon! Interesting about the Russian sub... The US had done similar things in past decades against the Russians including tapping underground cable lines using subs and diving equipment etc.... It was a game of cat and mouse and both sides played it.
"But not Barry" - cute!
Vera is so adorable; I can't help but smile after watching your episodes, she just lights up each one :) Much love Malin & Johan, thanks again for the beautiful views, the history, and for sharing your story with us!
17:04 I was really laughing... Vera's sunglasses, hat and life vest make her so cute...
That was a very interesting episode. I like the history and anecdotes you are telling us about Sweden. You are good at telling us.
You three do an awesome job! Thank you for sharing. We will be starting our cruising life early next year, we have to fill our cruising kitty first. We do plan to share our adventure on youtube too, so stay tuned. Our goal is to sail the higher latitudes, Iceland, Greenland, Norway, Sweden, and possibly getting back to Antarctica. Anyway, keep up the good work.
Absolutely love this country. Civilized, cultured full of history, interesting cuisine, and no graffiti. A huge contrast to North American culture.
Where's our Friday afternoon Ran fix?
Thank you for the amazing vid! As a 11 year old boy in Norway in 1981, i still remember all the media fuzz about the grounding of the russian submarine. It must have been very humiliating for the russian marine, -everybody knew and understood what they were up too... anyway, thank you for the trip down memory lane and the beautiful scenery 😍❤️
I would say yous guys were somewhat respectable to return that submarine prior to further destruction.
What a great spot. And happy baby.
Whiskey on the rocks ,I remember that well as a American submariner, Pacific side of that era ,enjoyed
Rowing through the harbour and bumping into the walls was not the Oarswomen's fault, I personally believe the Coxswain was to blame. We heard no direction, timing or encouragement. I think he needs more training in that function. Great video as usual.
I think uncle Barry will love meeting her someday😋😋😋
Wow thats all i can say wow wow love your journeys big kiss for the littleone xxx
The year my firstborn was born! I remember being so frightened of the Russian military and what they might do. Love your informative and lovely videos. Little Vera has the sweetest smiles 😊
i'm 66 and have seen a " few " babies over that time, doubt if i have ever seen a happier one than your little gem who looked totally fab in the sunglasses - channeling the ultra-cool Audrey Hepburn ( RIP ) your vlogs are always atmospheric and interesting, stay safe 😘
Lovely video Ran....
Thank you
Once again, an outstanding performance by Vera. Good submarine story.
Sea Dogs, but not Barry 😅 I got it, good one.
Richard Hanson , there is a difference between sea dogs and an “ old sea Dog “ , the sea dogs are better looking 🤣😂😂 ! LOL !
Boy, am I slow...I got it now😂
I caught that one! Keep Barry in your prayers people. He's had some hard seas lately... ruclips.net/video/BEn3KNi7RjM/видео.html
"They look like Seadogs.......not Barry!" Love it. I'm sure he would too.
Vera looked so cute in those sun glasses. She carried off that look really well!
Not Barry! Still laughing at that one!
Another Seadog and Shaddy fan here!
The 1981 conflict with the grounded U137 was an embrassment for the Soviet Navy, for grounding and getting caught because of an amateur-like error while on illegal recon mission in waters of another sovereign country, forcing the Soviet government to send an official apology to the government of Sweden.
But it was almost as embrassing for the Swedish navy intelligence, and showed serious gaps in their surveillance at that time: The Soviet sub had been grounded for over 15 hours before being seen by the fishermen, and the sub had been trying to get off using her own engines for the whole night.
The "special signal used only in wartime" was actually a radar signal. They turned from a single frequency surveillance signal to frequency-hopping radar that is used to control the fire of a nearby coastal battery.
Interesting story ,Thanks!!
"Not Barry. The other sea dog'
:)
Perfect Friday as always. ,,,,,,,/),,,,,,,,,fair winds you three, thank you. Barry the old dog is looking just as good as you guys, just from a way different latitude these days.
Another fantastic video with some very interesting history.
Thank you Malin and Johan for putting your effort into this youtube channel and sharing glimpses of your life and adventures with us. Every Friday equals stopping for a moment in the evening, getting ready some snacks and drinks and sitting down together to see what you have uploaded. We watch you since the beginning and find your videos unique among the other sailing channels. It is that blend of beautiful visuals, your peaceful narrative, the music and now the smile of Vera, that floods the whole room through the screen for those few minutes and swipes us into your beautiful story. We travel since 2015, so sometimes we don't have possibility to see what you are uploading, but then it is even better - whole evening movie to catch up till the latest episode : )
Fair winds, lots of health and sunny days. And thank you once again for sharing.
Such an imteresting video... I never miss your uploads... Thanks for making them... Take good care of yourselves... x
Ni var på Utklippan!! Nice , I ve been there too :)
Lol! I was thinking of Barry when you mention sea dogs.
It looks like you are using an iPad for navigation. I am switching to iPad navigation also. So, please share what size the iPad is and which program you are using and how do you protect the iPad?
Love the new boat. Great choice and your precious baby will have the world open to her as she grows. Wonderful!
Sweden is beautiful.. I will have to travel there someday.
Lol Johan busting Malin's chops in the row boat... really had me cracking up🤣
and then he ran aground, like a Russian sub...
Thanks for the Whiskey on the Rocks story Johan. I remember watching news broadcasts of the events at the time. Sw!eden did great job of calling out the Soviets, of showing who was boss. You two be careful, Vera is stealing the show! :)
It is Friday afternoon and i almost lost hope that I m gonna see you today. You can't even imagine how many people in the world waits for your new piece. Cheers from Grenada. Capt. Jack.
Another great episode packed with interest and excellent drone footage of the harbour on the island. Vera is a real cutie and getting big so quickly. I think Mom & Dad will have their work cut out when she gets mobile which is pretty soon now😂😂
I wonder how many plaques at pints of interest you guys have read since you have started your journey..
Interesting story about that submarine incident. Brings up memories because it was well followed here in Finland too.
Watching the video I happened to think: I wonder if tinting those forward "windows" would be an idea for going into the tropics?
People’s refusal sometimes to do the “right thing,” especially when the request is so small and simple, is unfortunate to hear. Wonderful little episode. I hope your daughter is someday able to see your family’s past journeys. Be safe.
B Burrell so Rude of them not to be good boating neighbors. Karma is a bitch though and it will come back to bite them.
I see you took the high road by not revealing their identity. I don't think I would have been so polite.
Its sad when people don't do the "right" things when it would cost them so lottle.
Just watched Ruby Rose and a Neal trimaran was docked in such a way that they couldn't get Ruby Rose out. . .asked for 3 days and they wouldn't move. . .finally had to involve the marinia.
not always sailors in sailboats nowadays🙄
Aaand suddenly everybody is so certain that there would have been enough depth for that other boat. There might have been enough depth for them, maybe not. It's not a good seamanship to risk your own vessel (or fairing on the keel) just to be polite.
Malin and Johan did the right thing not to reveal their identity. I'm not sure what the law is in Sweden, but using social media to shame other people is a crime in some of the nordic contries, even if those people deserved to be shamed.
Another great episode of adventure and history. I enjoy that your posts are full of interesting events and histories. Cool sun glasses there Vera! Be well.
Still watching for the sailing but that Vera is sure getting cute and fun to watch too. Ron
Aww...love the baby sunglasses! Thanks for showing us the seals and telling us about the sub going aground. Fair winds and following seas, Gloria
Lovely, happy Vera seems very content. Enjoy listening to her giggling. Jane, Philadelphia
Your little sailor will be walking in a year and I’m jealous because she already has great sea legs. You guys are 10 times better than La vagabond.
Vera is the newest cool sunglasses trendsetting girl. :D
Recently I had surgery to cut the muscles in my eyes. After the recuperation I was amazed at how clear your photography is, clearer than any of the others I follow. Don't know if it's your equipment or your photography but I really am enjoying it. I can see every whisker on Johan, every bird feather, rocks with all their barnacles, the grain of the teak on your boat and even beautiful Vera's eyelashes. Thank you so much for all the wonderful things you share, especially Vera, what a doll. Keep em comin'!!! As someone else mentioned, we all wait eagerly for each new edition!
Sounds like you had a great surgeon! Congrats on your recovery!
Little bit of both, they have a good eye for aesthetics and they have decent gear.
@@p-dubya thank you so much for your kind congrats! How thoughtful of you to message me! Happy days!
@@2WheelsGood.01 I agree with you they must have both, thanks for commenting!
I love when places aren't full of tourists. This looks so dreamy. Sucks that the other boat people were rude, where were they from?
Getting to watch @RAN and @OldSeaDog on the same day is a treat. Great video guys, thank you
Agreed. Hilights of the week.
Nice history lesson myself was on a ship not over there but somewhere else on one cargo ship but I no the story of the submarine.
I remember the U-boat incident... I was young then and didn't really understand the implications...
oh - and it would be nice if you could put a map in your description or in the video, so that we can see where you are... :)
Is that sub the Whiskey class sub that later sank off Bornholm? about 3 miles due West from the island, 55.14.720N and 14.39.430E, The wreck lies in a NE - SW direction. Depth was 37m according to my log book. Not every day you get to dive a Russian Sub. Big bronze props on her. There is a hatch in front of the coming tower which had a big D shaped handle on it. Sadly even with the crow bar whilst we were able to lift the handle up it wouldn't turn.
6:55 No, this won't be in the video! haha It's a lot more fun to row a boat when you have a video making heckler!
Cool story about the Russian sub! The cold war seems so long ago. I was 14 years old in 1981.
Forgive me if I missed it but have you given your Najad a resounding cheer of approval? Old RAN was super and I am interested to know how you feel now after covering some miles.
nicholas
It's incredibly empty and almost deserted everywhere you go. I mean, it's great to have this exclusiveness everywhere, but is it due to the coronavirus epidemic, or ist always that calm on this part of the Swedish southern east coast? Happy sailing, like your videos a lot.
Their (other boaters) rude heart was your gain 👍, and ours.
ALOHA!
Love you guys vedios
I enjoy watching for the sailing .I mostly watch because you are such a nice family . Your baby is so cute.
Come up to gothenberg I'd love to sail with you. You could teach knots and kopts
In the US, it’s “green right going, red right returning.” Is it the opposite in Sweden?
disregard my previous commentar, it was wrong.
In European and Swedish waters it’s the opposite. It’s green right returning... 😂
Another great vlog! Sorry to see there are selfcentered idiots everywhere. That little one is growing like a weed. What a joy!!
6:52 "This won't be in the video"...? Must have escaped editing attention (too funny!) Rowing all the way to Karlskrona would give the ladies doing so regularly some very strong arms, Malin! And Vera sporting the shades, too! Someday soon, she'll be rowing you! 😂
A Russian sub running aground is even FUNNIER -- I 100% agree with Johan on that. "Whiskey on the rocks!" never made a submarine an 'all terrain vehicle' 🤣😂
Barry has had some rough weather lately: ruclips.net/video/BEn3KNi7RjM/видео.html
I really appreciate how the Swedes build some really STOUT harbors. Thanks for the tour and the "seal safari". That lighthouse looks like something from the North Carolina Outer Banks (hurricane coming soon). Those which get decommissioned sometimes get converted to automated beacons.
Fair Winds and Flat Seas, Blessings to you all,
S/V "Windwalker"
Great vlog guys and well made . Love the submarine story and Vera is looking great in her shades ,lol
Many fanx
:-D
Great video and thank you for the lighthouse and Russian submarine story and the views along your travels..take care be safe and may your needs be met when needed....
That was so nice when you made the comment about the sea dogs, and you remembered barry. I just got through watching his new vlog. I hope that you communicate with him on occasion, he seems like such a wonderful character. Just like the crew of RAN II.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful video. Stay safe, enjoy your wonderful life.⛵⚓🛶👪
Love your Nordic adventures
Great video. Now I am sorry I sailed by Utklippan without stopping.
Thank you for not using Mid roll adds!!
I have to ask. What is the purpose of the plank lashed to the railing on the starboard bow?
It’s used between the fenders and the dock when it’s a rough and uneven mooring wall.
@@RANSailing Ah, of course! Thank you! Brilliant series - one learns so much.
"Not Barry" Now, send him the invoice for the promotion!
You guys look so much more relaxed now! The new Ran II, really makes you all look so happy... Vera is always happy😊☺
In England they are called dummys (pacifier), so I would call one full of pears a yummy dummy! 😉
@10:23 dat baby makes the exact same face as me 30min into some stupid company meeting on slack ...
Soviet, not Russian! Soviet! :-)
Three cheers to the Navy for protecting their homelands. : ) Peace
This won't be in the video, famous last words;)
Who knew Sweden has such a interesting shoreline to explore!
14:03 Boo, hissss, Miserable sailors on that boat.
I hope the next marina they attempt to visit has a harbour master who is a fan of your channel and does not let them in....
You should have shown the name of the boat with the inconsiderate people , but happy that you have more class than that , “ what goes around comes around “ Thanks for the awesome video , I really enjoy looking at the homeland of my grandfather.
Can you make a video with Vera featured in every shot with whatever you're doing in the background? I think that would be fun . . . She's such a bright little sprite. :)
Hey,
you made a wonderful report about your country.
I really love it - your report and your country.
Up to now I have been twice in the ‘Skärgard’.
For me it’s like a 'symphony created by water, rocks and trees'.
Hopefully I will be able to come back quite soon.
And by the way:
there is a documentation online (on YT)
which includes this Russian submarine on the Swedish soil.
The doc is a French/German co-production and
is called “Methode Reagan” - “The method of R. Reagan”
(may be the translation function has to be used).
Interesting, but also quite awful; it tells a bit “who walks over corpses”.
I wish you fair winds and enough water below the keel,
.
Interesting Cold War story of the Russian sub. There is an American movie of a Russian sub grounded off the coast of a small America city. The Movie is called "The Russians Are Coming, The Russian Are Coming." Turned out to be a comedy. Vera is earning a share of the proceeds, ya know! :¬) Webhead USA
just curious!??? Do you think you should speak your native tongue only around a child and bring them up to speed on the second language in later years. Or should you be bilingual around the child.?? I feel that the bilingual approach could lead to sentences in later years being a hybrid of both when speaking. I know nothing of linguistics but while living in the USA I did speak to some American children of Hispanic descent and they spoke a slight miss-mash of English / Spanish. Their families spoke only Spanish at home. (Poor sample I know !)
Ah! But I prefer Scotch not Russian whiskey 😉👍 but then again, I remember that incident. I was quite concerned thinking “here we go again” thinking about those times when both sides of the Cold War were goading each other even in the air. Now it’s just nice to see where it happened. Oh yes it was quite funny you mentioned Barry. 🙂🙂🙂👍
Love seeing other couples sailing with their babies. We are currently sailing with our 1.5 year old daughter and loving it! she is so stubborn though and never accepts our help to walk around despite getting thrown around the boat at times
Tak for en fin video, håber at I snart kan komme til Danmark igen. Vi savner de svenske sejlere ;O)
