- This was sent to me by Al Coon from Arizona. He found it on a job site and kept it for 14 years. It was extremely dry and hard. I persisted and turned it into one of my favorite pieces.

Phil, Your video's are the first I watch when they are posted! Love, Love, your work ,but especially, Love your laid back humor!
When you ask the public how to proceed with a piece when it is not live, cracks me up! You answer your own questions! Love it! You are much appreciated! Love You!
ET
Haha, well I at least keep myself entertained, Eric! 😄 It's nice to know it gets out there to the public, too! LOL!
Mr Phil, I've been watching your channel for a little over a year now, I think. This video popped up on my feed today. I noticed it was three years old. That, in itself, made me want to watch this video. I guess maybe I wanted to see how much your channel, style or creativity has changed. Basically, what I figured out is that your style and creativity have not varied much at all. your work still screams Phil Anderson today as it did three years ago. And let me tell you, this piece may well be one of the most natural looking pieces I've seen to date. It's an absolute beauty. From the onset, it was obvious it was going to offer you a challenge. But you accepted that challenge and went to work. What you wound up with was such a wonderful masterpiece, in my honest opinion.
This video may be three years old to date. But this may well be my new favorite piece created by you.
As far as changes in your channel, I'm very glad you do not completely mute your sped up sections of video anymore. I did not care for time muting at all. I enjoy the wood turning sounds, even in fast motion.
I'm glad this video found my feed this morning. I thoroughly enjoyed watching.
I absolutely love your channel, sir.
Very kind of you, Les, thank you, I'm really glad you enjoy my videos! 😊 You are correct, this piece was a problem all the way through but, totally worth it to me. I love this piece and wish I had more wood like it!
99% of Turner's would have cast that piece in resin. Including myself. But you stuck to your guns, and created a masterpiece. What an interesting chunk of timber. Love the swirling end grain in the bottom. Thank you for letting us watch your thought process.
"Swirling end grain" Love that phrase, Mark, and it describes it, perfectly! Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment, much appreciated!
Phil
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop actually Phil, I'm not sure its end grain. Every time I've encountered it, it's where the tree was damaged somehow. Must have something to do with the healing process ???
I believe I could listen to you all day. So relaxing and enjoyable watching you work.
I appreciate that, Dan, thank you very much! 😊
Wow. If that piece of wood didn't speak to you, nothing would! It was a wild, feral mustang of a wood chunk. But you respect your medium, and look at the outcome! 💞💞💞 It's geological in its beauty. That should be anyone's prized position.
I'm so glad you recognize that, Nan, thank you!
I love oak..... And that piece is wonderful.
My very first turning was a small natural edge bowl. About as big as your palm.
I sanded it up with wax and oil mixture, and brought it inside to show my wife and daughter. I handed it to my daughter and she started rubbing and caressing it instantly, and said.... "This is so cool. I'm keeping it"
Her hands spoke as loud as her words.... The feel of a piece is important.
Nice turn Phil. Pray you are well.
Thanks for sharing! 😊
You will never know how much I enjoy listening to your videos I don’t get to watch but I can hear I’m glad I’m not the only one that a pretty piece of wood brightens my day I’m not blind I’m just busy making shavings as Eddie says
Hahaha...Can't stop for nuthin', right Randy! I love that, keep on makin' those shavings! Thank you so much!
Phil
Fabulous Bowl Phil. I agree with you 100% when it comes to a natural live edge and bark in a bowl. Enhance the natural look of the piece instead of turning away all of natures beauty, As always great job.
Thank you, Brian! 😊
Phil... I had to come back and watch this again... it’s one of my favorite places. What character. Just love it.
I'm grateful you did, Maui, thank you!
I absolutely love the way you preserve the natural beauty of the pieces you work with!
Thank you, Mary! 😊
Love it, Maestro. Mother nature really gave you something special there. Love that curly grain inside.
Jay
Thanks, Jay! 👍
Thank You Phil...Always fun!!...(have been away)..Returning, first thing I do is watch your show. Phil I enjoy folks sending strange pieces of wood, trying to stump Phil. I look forward to your next turning. I like the hard woods Phil...So your vehicle of choice is a side by side. My yard sale vehicle was an old Harley servi-car (Oakland police). Always an adventure (every mile I would stop, walk back and pick up whatever fell off the bike, ha).. ..tm
Welcome back, Jeff! Yes, as you know, I have the best, most generous viewers. I don't know what I would do without all the cool wood that has been sent my way. Oh, those servi-cars are sooo cool! Quite valuable collectibles, now. Convenience and, in your case, exercise as well! LOL!
Phil
You are so lucky to have this wonderful gift from Arizona from M. Al! What an amazing piece of wood. An oak burl !?!. In your hands it’s a guaranteed “oeuvre d’art” as accomplished. It is outstandingly beautiful. Great job!
Yes I am, Sylvie! My generous viewers have provided me and this audience with so much variety of wood. We are all lucky! Thank you! 😊
Absolutely smashing as always 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
You're the best, J'Lyssa! 😊
Wonderful indeed. It shows the rugged time it had, growing in the desert. Well turned, Phil!
😃
Another work of art, some people compliment me on a turning that I’ve done & I give them your video information so they can see the difference between an artist & a wood butcher!
LOL! If they are complimenting you, Doug, just revel in it! You do what a lot of folks, can't! 😊
I thought I'd seen all your videos. This is especially beautiful. New one for me.
I like it, too, thanks, Sandra! 😊
I know this is an older video, but what a great piece of work! This beautiful oak bowl would be very welcome in my home. I hope who ever ended up with it appreciates it!
I have it and I do appreciate it, Bunny! 😊
That is some challenge!! What incredible wood! Great job Phil! Cheers, Paige C.
Yes it was! It remains one of my favorites. Thank you, Paige! 😊
That’s one of my favorite pieces you’ve done Phil. Absolutely stunning!!!
I'm glad you like it, Mark, thank you! 😊
Just gorgeous to me also, Phil.
I'm in awe of your work.
You are too kind, thank you! 😊
The swirls in the grain make this piece. Beautiful!
Agreed, thanks, Roger! 😃
Another great piece! That was some dense wood but you turned it into a beautiful bowl! 😍
Thank you very much! 😊
Phil that piece is Gorgeous and enjoy watching your video and ya can't get better than that
Thank you kindly, Rich!
I love the natural beauty of the wood ❤️
That's what it's allll about, Rod. Thank you! 😊
Beautiful piece. I am learning a lot from your videos. Thank you.
Wonderful! Thank you so much, Mike!
Another beauty, Phil! I do t know how you manage not to have some of these pieces literally fly completely apart on you!! Lol! Keep on turning!!
I look them over pretty good before I start, Charles. With care, most anything can be turned. Thank you! 😊
Phil I think I have said this before but that is my favorite of all I have been blessed to watch you create. I made a spalted maple bowl with exterior inclusions that prevented me from turning walls as thin as I wanted as well. Thanks for another great video.
Sounds great, Jim! 😊
Extremely fabulous. A work of art is in the eye of the beholder! ❤❤❤🇬🇧
I'm glad you like it, Maud, thank you! 😊
Love the petrified oak bowl. Dan
Me too, thanks, Dan!
What a beautiful piece of wood. We don’t have a lot of wood here in the desert, so when you find something like that, it’s a treasure.
Agreed, this is a rare piece, Mark!
Great work I could not see the bowl before you. Started. What a talent!
Phil- I have watched you turn out many beautiful pieces. In my mind this is one of your best, a work of art!
Thank you so much 😃
I really like this one. I was thinking you were not going to get the depth you did. The grain is spectacular. I love it when days come together like that. Hope you have a few more of them.
Thanks, yeah the depth was a nice surprise! 😀
That really is absolutely stunning and the way you’ve managed to hollow it out but retain every single piece of natural beauty on the outside is fantastic and it is a piece that I would love in my house for sure. it’s unique. That’s why I love it.
Thanks so much, Martin! 😊
From a work of nature ,to a work of art .well done to you Sir .love all your projects but this one stood out for me .
Yeah, this is a special piece of wood, Doug! 😊
Great work beautiful lovely to watch you do it thanks for sharing
Thank you, Philip! 😊
Great job Phil, fantastic piece👍👍👍👍
So glad you like it, Mark, thank you very much!
Phil
I’ve only been watching you for a couple of weeks now and you’ve taught me so much. I’m going to try bowl turning very soon. I like your style you make it easy to watch. You’ve inspired me to try something new in my woodworking hobby. Thank you.
Wonderful! I know it's a big step to turn that first bowl. I was very intimidated by the thought of it but now I'm glad I did. Funny thing is, now I find it difficult to spindle turn. Be careful, Chuck, it can be a slippery slope! 😊
I wanted to ask you and forgot what is this sanding sealer?
@@chucksandberg1 Sanding sealer is used much like a primer for paint. It's a base coat that seals the wood so the final coat of finish applies and looks better. I use Zinsser Seal Coat.
Beautiful piece Phil. I very much enjoy your videos.
Glad you like them, Tom, thanks for watching!! 😄
That one is stellar! The side void is very attractive
😊
Love your work, but, your attitude is wonderful!
You are so kind, Beth, thank you! 😊
I know it's an old video, but I'm a fairly new subscriber. This is the best thing I've seen you do. What a difference from the beginning, and yet you kept the nature in it so well.
Yeah, this one is special simply because you don't see a piece of wood like this every day. I love it, too! 😊
Hi, Phil …. HOWDY from central England UK , I want you to know that you have gained and avid fan since I began watching your videos a week or two back. I admire yiu because yiu are very honest about what you do, the doubts, the niggles, and ,not sure’s all overcome, with your innate natural style. Love your work too, no hint of wood ever seems to beat you. I love to see you rise to the challenge. Me ? I’m a real old fogey of 85 yrs,I’m still turning, but in a very modest way, with a small lathe, on which I produce lidded boxes. Just lately I have begun to explore , natural edge work, square platters plus any other odd turning, as long as it fits my lathe , bed depth . You are a real, inspiration to me, I’m not as scared of natural edge stuff like I used to be….THANKS !
So good to know, Toy Maker! Lidded boxes are a favorite of mine. Not to turn but to hold, fondle. You've got about 10 years on me, it's good to know you are still at it! I'm so glad you are exploring natural edge turnings. For me, they are just so rewarding. Thank you for watching and commenting, much appreciated! 😃
Outstanding. I couldn’t really see how this would work but as usual you worked your magic. Just beautiful!
It's a favorite of mine, thank you, I'm glad you like it! 😊
An excellent bowl! I like the grain lines in the wood!
Thank you very much, Dan! 😊
That is absolutely gorgeous!
Thank you! 😃
Looks really nice and smooth and the colour and the way the wood lays is great you have done another great piece well done you
Thanks a lot, Amanda! 😊
I love it my Phil. I hope you have it displayed in a good spot.
😊
What a piece - truly unique, one of a kind. It reminds me of a volcanic bomb! One of those I want to reach into the screen and touch ❤
Yeah, I can see the bomb part, Ruth. Thank you!
It always amazes me …. Wood is so beautiful! Well done sir
😊
I love this bowl. What a amazing chunk of wood an job you did.
Thank you very much, Art! 😊
Thanks Phil. Very fun to watch!
Thank you so much, Tim! How is your turning coming along? Enjoying yourself, I imagine!
Phil
I love this one. Phil, you sure see things in these raw hunks of wood that I don't.
😊
Absolutely stunning, no more than that. I can’t find any words to describe the beauty of this bowl. The craftsmanship is insurmountable! Oh how I wish I could do a tenth of what you can do...
I appreciate your great, uplifting comment, Sylvie. Thank you so much! 😊
Absolutely gorgeous!!!
One of my all time favorites!
Me too, Susan, thanks! 😊
Hi Phil, Im a naughty boy, I didn't close my eyes, that looked like an upgrade of Tuffy's sanding idea ?? A really neat piece. God bless stay safe. Tony
That was actually the prototype, Tony. I still have it and like it a lot. Take care! 😊
Morning Phill, I took one look at that piece of wood and knew I was in for a bad time today!! I was expecting things to fly off and knuckles to be smashed and slices taken out while sanding. Got to say my friend I love the piece the grain is fantastic and the form is stunning! Well Done that Man!!!
Well, if I knew you were watching, Andy, I could have stuck my hand out there just a little further! LOL! "Slices taken out." Now, there's a visual! You're cracking me up as usual, buddy! Thank you my friend!
Phil
Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop. I wouldn’t miss one of your videos Phill I get up extra early on a Friday morning just to watch!! Is that grain on the bottom what they call spaghetti oak?
Thank you for that, Andy! I don't know if that's what they call it, but they should! Thank you for that, I knew it looked familiar but I didn't see any sauce!
Phil
stunning piece phil great turning i did not think you could improve that piece but you did sir you did thank you
So glad you like it, Wayne, thank you very much for watching and commenting!
Phil
I love it! That would have made a gorgeous lamp base too.
Totally! Thank you, Todd!
I just love the live
Edge bowl. I’m currently living in Arizona at a 55 an older RV park that has a fabulous wood shop. Just got into turning about 6 months ago.
That is awesome, Dave, enjoy! 😄

Thank you! 😊
That is butymuss Phil I love it great job
Thank you, Duane! 😊
That was a brilliant journey mate ☺
Thank you, Stephen, really glad you enjoyed it!
Phil
Beautiful Phil love the features ❤️ 😍
😊
What a transformation! That bowl demands to be touched. It ranks among your strongest works. In future videos, if you are able, I suggest having the closing shots include a screen of the block of wood before any turning and the finished product. Thank you for your passion for turning wood.
Thank you, Edwina, for taking your time to watch and for your terrific comments!
Phil
Beautiful piece , good job 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you so much, Tomas!
Phil
I don't usually comment on a video, but this piece is awesome!!! Thank you for sharing.
Well, Sandra, I'm really glad you made the exception on my video. Thank you very much, It makes me happy that you like this piece!
Phil
Another beautiful piece Phil

D
Indeed!
That’s just awesome 😎 Mr Phil ❤️
Thank you, Tony! I like it quite a bit, too!
Phil, that is gorgeous
Thank you, John, it's a favorite! 😊
Phil - you are a “people person”, at least based on your dialogue with all of us! You are providing a great service to us newer turners. Thank you very much. BTW - this oak piece is a beauty!
Thank you, Terry, I'm glad you like it and took your time to tell me!
Phil
That turned into a gorgeous looking piece 😊Thanks for sharing your hard work 👍🏽
😊
An exceptional piece, Phil!
Thank you, Dwayne!
Now it is hard to say which is favored. The different brown shades are gorgeous.
This was a special piece of wood. I really like it, too. Thank you, Vaughn!
As always, a great video! Last piece of oak I turned was an old red... I got tired of resharpening and started using my skew, parting tool, and even a scraper.... I went through all 5 gouges and finally I had a bowl shape.... it sanded quite easily, but I started with a 40 grit lol.
Good stuff, Matthew! LOL! At least you got there!
What an awesome piece . Love it
Glad you like it, Steve! This is from the "way back" machine! 😊
Beautiful job Phil!
😊
Absolutely beautiful.
One of my favorites, Carmen. I'm glad you like it too, thank you!
Phil
Simply fantastic!!!!!!
Wow, thank you, HT!
Phil
very beautiful piece, Phil.
Glad you like it! 😀
Well Phil I'm glad you're having such a good day. I was smiling thinking that you might start singing "It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood " but then I noticed that you didn't have a zip up sweater on. Anyway this piece is unbelievably gorgeously awesome. It brings to mind ancient broken pottery from an archeological site. Just stunning. I also want to say how much I appreciate and look forward to your response on my comments. Not everyone does that so I appreciate you taking the time. It really makes my day.
I'm so glad you like this, Glenda, thank you! It was a difficult turn but I just knew there was something special in there that just had to get out. I enjoy our correspondence, too! There are rare times that I am overwhelmed and can't respond the way I would like but I will always try. I appreciate all the time you spend with me! 😊
Real artiste very nice bowl thanks
Thank you very much, Andre! 😊
Hi Phil,
What a gorgeous piece!! You are blessed to have viewers send you something like this 😃
Listening to your monologue during turning is so great, it makes me smile. Both because you are funny and witty, but also because you remind me a lot about my dad, who passed away in 2015.
Thank you for sharing, and entertaining us all!
Best regards
Lars
Agreed, Lars, I have the very best and most generous viewers. If it weren't for them I'd still be turning bug eaten Alder!
I'm so glad you enjoy my videos. That is, of course, my goal. Glad I can bring up some pleasant memories. Thank you so much!
Phil
Phil what comes to mind is Beauty and The Beast. You just turned the Beast into a Beauty! The grain in that Oak is is about as good as it gets. You certainly picked the right direction to mount it.
Like you said it has so much going on. And WOW I could hear how hard it was. I have a chunk of concrete I could send you but it is softer than what you just turned so there would be no challenge it that. LOL
So glad you had such a great day my friend.
Gary
Hahaha...You're cracking me up again, Gary! Yes, the grain is about as good as it gets. And you can keep your ol' concrete! It was a great day, things are looking up. Thank you, my friend, take care!
Phil
Done it again, gave the thumbs up then watched the video over & over again & forgot to make a comment. I gave up counting the number of times I watched this video, I have found it so 'awe inspiring'. An absolute masterclass in creative, artistic woodturning. Commentary perfect, woodturning perfect, finish perfect & so one could go on & on.... You are a true Artist with a wood lathe & wood as your means of Artistic production. YOU PHIL, ARE A GREAT 'GIFT' TO THE ART OF WOODTURNING. Long may you 'prosper'. Cheers , Don from South Aust.
Well, sheesh, Don, now you make ME want to watch it! It's probably been a couple years since I turned this piece. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, thank you! 😊
Beautiful piece of work!
I'm so glad you like it, Stephen, thank you!
That’s awesome job 👍
Love this piece one of your best as far as I am concerned I appreciate all the hard work involved Oak fantastic wood.
Thank you, Lewis! Yes, this piece was special. A pain to deal with but worth it in the end. I'm so glad you like it, too, thank you!
Awesome piece Phil! I love it!
Thank you kindly! 😊
Very nice piece. I love it.
Thank you very much, Donald!
Another beauty! Love it
😊
Great piece. Have a safe 4th.
Thank you, Red! Hope your 4th was good, too!
Phil
Lovely work, I've managed to make a bowl out of well seasoned oak , by hand not turned. Took me weeks to get what I wanted and it was end grain after much consternation and many many blunt tools my bowl was finished. I love your work it so sympathetic to the wood. Thanks for the videos.
Thank you, Debra! Sounds like your work was quite difficult but, like mine, rewarding. I guess how we get there is less important than getting there! Good for you, keep it up! 😊
Great job , beautiful
😊
Ripper bowl Phil!
So glad you like it, Tim, thank you very much!
Phil
