Last evening, I was sorting the scrap pile (to-the-burn-bin vs. to-the-lathe!) and found another gem hiding amidst the dross (waxing poetic, aren't I? Must be the coffee.) You'd love this piece-- Eastern red maple that from a 14" diam. log, slice off the side of the crown crotch round which sat on the bare ground out back of the shop, so it spalted. This one is so much like several of the ones in your videos that I'm running through your channel list to find out how you did similar chunks. Thanks so much! And thank you for showing, in this vid, how the Sand O Flex works, and how you can pull out more sand paper! I'll be getting a set, for certain!
You are keeping busy, occupying your mind, good job! That sounds like a great piece, Dave! I hope you can find some inspiration in some of my turning videos. I'm sure you will love having the Sand O Flex at your disposal. I just don't know what I'd do without mine! Phil
This is such an interesting piece. On one hand it's a great bowl. On the other hand if you tip it upside down it would make an interesting stand for a center piece with flowers or a plant stand, or an art piece stand. Does it wobble when it's upside down?
Outstanding piece of woodworking , very surprised that the small outlying branches stayed with the main piece 👍. Definitely a conversation piece in anyone's home😊
Thank you, Jonathon! This was the very first piece of really odd shaped wood I have ever turned. It's what got me started down this bumpy road I seem to be on. I'm so glad you like it and took your time to let me know! Phil

Thank you so much, Larry, for watching and commenting on my videos. I really appreciate your time and energy. I'm so glad you are trying new things! Happy Turning! Phil
Thanks, David! I understand what you're saying, and the first couple I turned like this were indeed, scary. But after you get a few under your belt, the scary part goes away and they become enjoyable. I'm getting to where I don't even want to turn just a normal bowl or platter, though I will. The challenge of this type of turning is just too much fun! Thanks for commenting!
Hello Phil, i am from Germany. That Wood you works looks like a japanes Cherry and is named Prunus serulata Kanzan, the two trunks at the side cout be from the wild Cherry at wich the Kind of japanes Cherry is put on top of same. Very good Job!
What a nice piece Phil. Good job. I like that kind of Bowls, with natural edges and the bark on. That sander flex does a great job, I think I need to get one. Up to now, the bark always gave me a hard time to clean it....
Thank you, Gunther! I don't know what I would do without the Sand O Flex but I would probably do fewer of the lived edge pices. It's not only a time saver, it's a "make it possible" tool, for me. Phil
Hey Phil, I’ve watched a lot of your videos and really enjoyed them. In fact you’ve influenced me quite a bit in my woodworking purchases. I bought a new Jet lathe just like yours and several tools that you use in your videos. I would like to know where you get your sweptback bowlgouges from and your negative rake scraper if you don’t mind sharing it with me thank you Phil I appreciate you and wish you the best
Thank you, Joe! 😊 Almost all my tools are Benjamin's Best, including those tools you mentioned. When I buy new gouges, I grind them to my needs. My negative rake scrapers are re-ground from single edge scrapers.
What an amazing result ! . for me it lloks like the part of the tree, here the crown begins. Cherry trees are often refined (hope it is the right word) and this seems to be the place where the refineind branches were copulated to the stem
We call that grafting, Stefan. I'm no expert in that. I do believe it is from the trunk of the tree, perhaps where it might have been grafted. I do love different languages and the meanings of some terms. Here, copulated would mean something quite different, done between two consenting adults! LOL! Thank you for watching, your great comment and for the chuckle! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Lol, (as a gardener) i knew the botanical term for the grafting could be..uhm..be a liitle ambiguous....but anyway, we are two guys in the best years who know what we are talking about.. thanks for your humorous reply, and a good new year for you , hope you celebrate it with family and good friends.
I have a couple of similar pieces, they happen when the tree gets pruned to keep it short either for ascetic reasons or for harvesting the fruit. It causes a lot of odd branching. I have wondered how long you have been doing the videos, this one answered that. Love the result.
Ah, I haven't seen this one commented on in a while. This is one of my favorite pieces. Thank you, Miguel, for the pleasant flashback and for taking your time to watch and make such a nice comment! Now, then, about that sunshine down under... Cold and rainy here! LOL! Phil
Very, very nice. I really enjoy that you give the piece a voice in what it becomes. Too many, too often, attempt to impose their preconceived idea of what is to be. Domination creates a product. Cooperation and accentuation creates art.
Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop I was an old school machinist in the Navy long ago. Lathes, mills, grinders, shapers, boring mills. We had it all. I loved lathe work best. I never turned wood, but did almost every kind of metal, and many different solid forms of nylon, mylar, teflon, etc. After a couple of years I started making things for fun. It’s amazing what you can do putting differing pieces of scrap together. Maybe someday I’ll get to do some woodwork on a lathe. I think that would be a blast.
I'm a newbie at this. ( Seems that so far all I've done is work on how to create catches, and I"m getting good at it, I think.) I digress. I've subscribed to dozens of wood turning channels, but I always keep coming back to this one. I love your work and I love your style. Keep posting, please. I'm so looking forward to getting beyond the "catch" phase of this endeavor, and I know that you can provide the inspiration to do just that. This particular piece is one of my favorites.
Dennis, I'm sooo with you on the catches. When I first started turning seriously, I had a ton of catches. Don't worry, this too, shall pass. I think it's all about your grip and approach to the wood. Now that I'm a little more confident, I find you don't have to white knuckle the chisel and DO NOT just poke it in there. Go gentle into this good night. I haven't had what I would call a catch in probably 3 years. Take your time, stop often, visualize your cut with the lathe off, chisel on the tool rest at the point of entry. Hold the chisel there and rotate the piece by hand. Imagine the cut it will make and look for whatever obstacles are going to be coming around. You'll get it. Thank you for watching and commenting! Phil
I sometimes see some weird things in the shapes that the wood grain gives and this time I can see the underside of an alligator LOL. apart from that it’s fantastic and I love it and everything about it :-)
Wow! That's crazy Phil! I like it! Funny on how this is a 4 year old video and most of the comments are recent. Hope you are still recovering well and not having any setbacks. Take care and see you in the next one!
Wow Phill still going back to watch earlier videos. Nice piece. Love the way it turned out. It was good to see how you finished out the Cherry. Do you have a sand-o-flex for each grit you use or do you change them out? Dan
This was my very first turning video, Dan and the first time I turned anything quite so natural. It's still a favorite of mine, glad you like it, too! I do have many Sand O Flex's. I bought my first one 50 years ago. Then when eBay came around, I set up a search so I would be notified every time a new ad was posted on there. I bought them when they were cheap, $5-10 dollars! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop well this is a great video and you definitely found your niche of natural turnings. Wish I had a couple more sand-o-flex units. Guess I will them one at a time. Keep on turning! Dan

You'd love this piece-- Eastern red maple that from a 14" diam. log, slice off the side of the crown crotch round which sat on the bare ground out back of the shop, so it spalted.
Phil
Beautiful piece Phil! I know it is from 2017 but I like the older videos too!
This was my very first all natural turning, Tina. I like it, too, thank you! 😊
Very unique!
😊
This is such an interesting piece. On one hand it's a great bowl. On the other hand if you tip it upside down it would make an interesting stand for a center piece with flowers or a plant stand, or an art piece stand. Does it wobble when it's upside down?
I'll have to find it to find out, Jessi! 😊
Phil
Very very beautiful.
My first ever turning video! 😊
Another great turning & great quality video- I especially like your your style of turning-it’s entertaining & I always learn from watching your videos- you always tell what you are thinking & the speed you are turning at etc -your work always amazes me
Thanks for sharing your talent with all of us

I appreciate you spending some time watching and commenting, Bill, thank you! 😊
Only just watched this video, what a brilliant piece, as you say “ Mother Nature at her best “
Also what a marvellous looking workshop you have, I’m very envious. Well done. Take care 👍🏻👏
Hi Steve! I'm pretty sure this was my very first really odd shaped natural bowl. I like it, too, and will probably keep it forever. Thank you so much!
Phil
do not think I would attempt to turn that what an awesome piece
Thank you so much, Garry, I'm glad you like it!
Phil
So beautiful!
My very first bowl video, Barbara. I'm glad you like it, thank you! 😊
Wonderful work. Turned out great. You have a blessed imagination.
This was my first ever really natural turning, Michael. Thank you for watching and your great comment! 😊
Wow an oldie but a goodie!
Love your work. Miss you so I went to the archives. Hope you are doing well!
My very first turning video and my very first all natural, organic turning, Alan. I'm glad you like it, thank you! 😊
It was not a foregone conclusion. Great job. (Hello from France)
Howdy yves in France! Thank you so much for your comment!

Absolutely gorgeous.💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Thank you, J'Lyssa! Cheers!
Beautiful piece 😀
Thank you very much, Christine!
Phil, I have watched several of your videos. I think it is surprising that you have NO IDEA how good you are!! Keep up the great work! You are an artist!!
Wow! Thank you, John, for your uplifting comment, much appreciated!
Phil
This is a wonderful piece, Phil. A true work of art.
This was awhile ago, Timothy, but it's still a favorite of mine. Thank you for your great comment!
Phil

My very first turning video, Don. This goes waaay back! 😀
Love it! The second view is the best. Great work.
Beautiful. No front or back. Great for a coffee table or centerpiece.
Great idea! Thank you, Sharon! 😊

You said this is what you like the most taking Gods work and turning it into this beautiful piece of art it's amazing and you are amazing! You got me started in trying new things I'm not has brave as you yet but getting there lol. Thanks for all your video's I still have much more to see!
Thank you so much, Larry, for watching and commenting on my videos. I really appreciate your time and energy. I'm so glad you are trying new things! Happy Turning!
Phil
Very nice! 👏👏👏
😊
Hello Phil, this is Lorenzini from Brazil. Very good video of him. Thanks!
Glad you liked it, Lorenzini, thank you for watching! 😊
What a difficil piece you work but nice result thanks
Thank you, Andre! 😊 Cheers!
That would be a scary beast to turn. Well done.
You've gotten a lot better with your video's since then but still like it
Haha, true! This was my very first all natural, organic piece.
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop your doing really nice work keep it up
Wow Nice very nice
I'm glad you like it, thank you! 😃
Awesome work
Thank you so much, Thomas!
Phil
Phil another master piece I love the way you take care of you work the finesse is so obvious that you put you ❤️ in 👍🏻 from sunny Queensland 🇦🇺
Wow, Kuhl, thank you for such a great comment! And, you GET it!
Phil
Awesome 👍👍👍
Thank you, Brenda! 😊 Cheers!
This piece can go well in a rustic setting.with heavy and rustic tables and such.
😀
Simply beautiful.
Thank you, Jo Ann! This was my first ever organic, odd, strange piece I did. In fact, I think it was my very first turning video. 😊
I sometimes see some weird things in the shapes that the wood grain gives and this time I can see the underside of an alligator LOL. apart from that it’s fantastic and I love it and everything about it :-)
This was my very first woodturning video, Martin. You had to dig to find this one! Thanks, I'm glad you like it! 😀
I really don’t know how I missed this awesome video but thank you as always hi from Ontario Canada
This is my very first turning video, Kelly. You reached into the way-back machine for this one! 😃
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Bahaha and glad I did reach into the way back machine LoL
Great job, love it.
best way to sharpen a chisel
Not sure what this means, Jim. Are you asking a question or?
That is really beautiful!
Thank you, Carol! It is still a favorite of mine.
Phil
turned out really nice
Thanks, Steve, it's one of my favorites!
Very much enjoyed watching you work Excellent video!!!!!
Thank you, Robert! Perhaps my favorite comment, ever! :) Thank you for watching!
Fabulous! ❤
My first ever "odd" piece, Ruth. I'm glad you like it, thank you!
Wow! That's crazy Phil! I like it! Funny on how this is a 4 year old video and most of the comments are recent. Hope you are still recovering well and not having any setbacks. Take care and see you in the next one!
This is my very first all natural, organic piece, Hotrod. 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop So this is where the crazy began! Lol. Take care friend.
Awesome another piece of art
Thank you, Michael! 😊
Dan
This has got to be an early video. I can see the roots of your video personality starting. Glad to see this!
@@kristikey8320 Haha, yup, very first turning video, Kristi! Thanks for watching!
