You had Erik and I howling when you said "maybe they weren't proud that they were made in Canada until this point"! So funny, I'm still giggling. Fantastic review Nick, I really appreciate it! I can think of at least 3 more semi-noticeable improvements and a ton of invisible ones, but you really nailed it. As Sid mentioned below, the action of the two should feel different, with the older one being a bit spongier and the new one being much crisper. See you at Blade Show 2018!
JohnGrimsmo Neat! Yeah, I noticed the difference in action, but didn't comment just because it's hard to tell if that's one knife, or an early late thing. But mine is definitely more crispy. Thanks for the comment.
So much better put than I could John! Appreciate you acknowledging Nick’s brilliant video, and Nick and my observations on the difference in deployment feel Thanks again!!! -Sid
I just got my hands on one today, they drew my name in the Maker's Choice a couple weeks back (#1204). Mine looks spot on to yours, actually. Same color of scales/hardware. I adore it; Well worth the wait.
Awesome. It really is cool seeing them dial them in more and more. Watching their videos and these ones really makes you appreciate them alot more. I'm currently waiting on the arrival of my #1015. I'm going to crash the postal website if I don't stop checking the tracking.
Nick, great video. I just received my second Norseman, the first is 062 the second 1181. There are nice upgrades to the newer Norseman. A lot I didn’t notice until you pointed them out. However, I think the addition of the second stop pin causes that “bounce” when closing the blade. My old beat up Norseman drops faster and smoother, which is probably from being broken in, but does not bounce back at all.
You're not a nerd, you are one of the best reviewers on YT currently. edit: not just knives, etc. I meant overall. Very informative and very thorough and almost personal.
Just grabbed one on the secondary market last night and so excited for it to come in this week. Picked it up for cheaper then I have seen since I started looking at them and less than the new ones are going for. So I’m excited.
Nice comparison. All fairly subtle to most of us. I had a 600 and an 800 series and missed most of the differences. I'm hoping to get a 1000 series as well to try the detent ramp. How many times can I buy the same knife and not carry it? I guess time will tell. (Grimsmo Bros, more Rasks please.) Shame that somebody sharpened off that wide point on the 100 series. For me that's one of the big benefits of the blade shape.
Will you do a video showing how to use movie magic without a video camera so that those of us whose hands are all thumbs can disassemble and then reassemble our knives more quickly and efficiently? My wife has told me that I need to cut down on my profanity
You want the lockbar to contact in only one small place so it doesn't have lock stick. Although it seems like it contacts the whole way it doesn't .And this doesn't affect the strength.
I've never really liked the Norseman. Kinda ugly imho. I get that they're very smooth and nice to play with apparently but I guess it's an acquired taste or something. Don't get it
oh absolutely, I think its similiar to a razel, or the crkt fossil. Definitely a bold statement that you kind of have to make a personal decision on whether you like it or not.
man, this thing is interesting, but it's giving me the Tom Brown Trapper vibe. ie there's a lot of knife that I just wouldn't know what to do with. I get the long chopping bit and a knife is not a knife without a pointy end, but I've never been wild about sudden changes in blade direction eg tantos. the machining is pretty amazing though.
Hi Nick I’ve been enjoying your reviews for several months now but I’m curious in most knives it seems you prefer a blade that is more straight and would cut flush to The surface. Both of these blades seem to curl up when you have a pocket pecker which brings the knife blade even further up. Is this a specialty knife or an edc That defies your usual standards. Thank you
I recently read a comment that said “ it’s ugly as all get out... I’ll take it!” Made me laugh, kinda feel the same way about this, that bull nose blade end is growing on me.
I’m thinking you don’t actually carry and use yours. Maybe I’m wrong but that’s what I’m thinking. Great review as always great eye to attention to detail
What would you pay for one of these. Please be realistic. Yes I agree. 950us for a Canadian made knife is high especially with the conversion factor. Sure they spent many hours on them but now over the years, the machines do the work. This should have lowered cost over time and increased efficiency.
Ive played with one and they are no doubt well built but i just cant see the price in it, its all in house and that but for me with the current exchange rate its a $1400 knife in Australia and at that price point there now so many better options. I will one day own one for the collection but its not happening any time soon.
I was kind of tempted to get one. I thought they were horribly ugly but then I started imagining how the blade would cut and took into fact that you liked them Then I saw the prices. Oh well. I guess its not to be.

I see this knife used in a pulling action. Someone who maybe works with leather or with rope a lot? Great looking knife for biltong(South African version of beef jerky)
Handmade products are almost bound to change/evolve over time and have a little variety from batch to batch, or even piece to piece. There is also some variation in the raw materials and components. I’ve been a scientific glass blower and fabricator for the past 15 years and basically the foremen of my current shop.. while I totally work out dimensions and tolerances for every product, pretty tight tolerances at that (at least for glass), I can pull out an old piece and know instantly who made it.. same for pieces that come in for repair. It just is what it is and and of the charms of handmade products. There’s always gonna be small variations in one person’s work to another.. there’s no mold for these things.. just materials, a lathe, torches and a small assortment of tools.
Wow .. I can not justify spending that much money on a knife ... it's beautiful that people spend! not that the knife is; cause it's so ugly .... power to those that do!
hahaha yeah the god damn knife is so ugly, but you know there would always someone would buy it, rare but there always will have the idiots would pay alot for shit
@@NickShabazz I have a ton of experience with m390, my work knife is m390, so I use it more than any other and have for a long time. I've only had my KJ clone for a month or so now, but I'd bet a decent amount of money on it actually being M390. Sure as hell wears, sharpens, and takes a polish exactly like M390. They dont really have any incentive to lie about it, in my opinion. If they were gonna lie, they could just mark the blade RWL34 then use 8cr, or whatever else. Instead, the blade is marked M390.
I feel like I'm committing blasphemy for not 'bending the knee' at the Grimsmo altar, but dare I ask what purpose this blade shape serves? I see a beautifully constructed, but massively overpriced builders/painter-decorator tool. Is it a skinning knife? Carving knife? Or just John and Erik Grimsmo laughing their asses off that the general public are gullible enough to invest in the old/new crisp/spongy mystique? Emperors New Clothes? Definately.
About 90% of people hate recurves but why is it okay on the Norseman? In my opinion it’s one butt ugly knife. I admit it’s smooth but I bet any knife with a tip heavy blade can be drop shutting.
I know you're joking and I know this is three years late but here's something cool. Was just watching this video right before this one, and look: ruclips.net/video/bbPJAv9god8/видео.html Norseman #137 being finished!

Wow, I absolutely LOVE seeing one of these that's actually seen real use, not just pocketed or looked at!
Chris Lapple I appreciate that Chris! Thanks,

Great work sir. It is reassuring to see you keep the tradition and quality alive. Alas, they can’t sell me one. 🙂🙃
I really like the looks of the older version.

That golden norseman looks like something from the game Banjo-Kazooie. Golden honey combs!
The shoulder standoffs also give much more rigidity to the knife

Im not super impressed by the design, but man can i appreciate 2 knives that are mechanically near perfect😍
#3873 coming to me soon, starburst pattern
It’s funny I think both are good horrid knives, but I enjoyed the video of you showing the differences none the less.
I'm amazed at the mirror-like edge on #137 -- EDC? Wow!
Thanks Nick. My collection needs a norsman. New or not , where should I shop? Kerry
Do you think John would ever make a Mini Norseman?
2 knives that wish they were Z Hunters. We can't all be perfect, Norsemans.

Grimsmo wants 1100Usd a pop now. That’s insane. I can get customs for that price.
My one lol Norseman Double Honey #2053 is still my favorite in my collection.
The lockbar shape, space around the pivot is an "age" thing... mine is # 329, no inlay and is pretty much identical to the #137
Rexbo Cool!

what would you call this style of blade? I know it isn't specific to Norsemen
little late but it's a modified tanto with a recurve
What kind of blade steel is on these knives

Holy hell! What witchery do you use to disassemble knives instantaneously?!
Grimm Reviews Practice, a good driver, and these knives are very good for disassembly. Super easy on a Norseman.

That norseman ought to have a sub model name called the wolverine.

I have a video about this and the Razel blades. This is definitely a bit of form over function, but that bottom corner can be great for opening boxes.
You and your fancy chisels
Blade shape doesn't seem very useful. Especially when trying to sharpen that recurve on a Whetstone.
Wet/dry sandpaper wrapped around a dowel makes sharpening it simple.
