    When I see guys doing a review, AND they don’t realize the saw will pinch if they cut in the middle when supported on both ends- for me, I’m doubtful of the credibility of their opinions in their review.

      yes i agree.i feel alot of these guys have not been cutting as long as i have and just by watchin them cut is not impressive at all.its like a guy who wins 2 fights thinks hes unstoppable. lol

    Saws pinch/bind for only 1 of 2 reasons.
    1) the relief is causing the wood to actually close up in the kerf
    2) your saw angle keeps changing side to side.
    The reason the bigger guy appears to saw much smoother/better is because his arm is well trained to saw straight back and forth. The other guy trying to go a little faster has his angle changing all the time causing bending in the blade and binding.

      Erik Joven out of the couple dozen comments I read I only saw 2 useful comments this one and one about cutting from the bottom so as you cut the weight of the tree is opening the cut instead of pinching the blade... thanks for the useful comments.

      How can this guy review saws when he does not know how to saw wood?

    • @andrewl2735
      @andrewl2735 Год назад

      The small guy is still pushing too hard which is another reason why the blade is bending like crazy. Also when you cut logs like this then it is a good idea to do some vertical cutting along the way too so that the blade is less likely to bind as you near the base of the wood and breaks off smoothly. As others have mentioned, a few saw cuts from below also prevents this issue. It is frustrating to see 'prepared mind' so unprepared that he cannot cut a piece of wood with a silky saw. Does the saw no justice whatsoever. Even the big guy should have known to do some vertical sawing and an undercut. I lost faith in this channel from this video.

      This helped me understand a lot about my technique as it was pinching for me too and my angles were not consistent, thank you!

    A lot of people get confused about the purpose of a saw. It's not about quickly cutting through wood. It's about efficiency and not expending a huge amount of energy (and calories) to process wood. Smooth and controlled will get it done almost as fast.
    If you are in that big a hurry then use a chainsaw.

  • @f22shift
    @f22shift 7 лет назад +43

    Proper way is to cut from the bottom when the log is supported on both ends. If it's on one end then you can go from the top.

If I'm not at work I'm in the woods and a little over a year ago I bought the silky pocket boy, the big boy, and the gomboy. The gomboy has broken 3 times on me. I'm not a fan. The pocket boy is awesome and works great!!! The big boy is amazing and jas never failed me I love it

    It baffles me that people had the option to take a katanaboy on that show and instead opted for other saws, with the exception of the guy who makes his own stuff and thus has a familiarity advantage, people really don't know their gear well on that show.

    great video. silly saws are fantastic to use. There is a little technique involve to prevent flex; this is a pull saw, do not put pressure on the push.

  • @buddhamack1491
    @buddhamack1491 7 лет назад +1

    If the log starts to pinch you can have a small wedge prepared to stick in the top of the area that will keep the pressure off of the blade. Takes less than a minute to carve a small stick into a wedge. It might just save you breaking a saw blade too.

    good to see you've finally changed your opinion on silky saws. I remember your other video said that the saws are just personal preference and they were pretty much the same when comparing Laplander to Silky. I guess when you get used to using the silky you realize that this isn't so.

    Silky rocks! I have the very same saw, and it never let me down in the 2+ years I've been using it.
    I didn't even had to sharpen it yet.
    PS: the Katanaboy is even better, thoug it's a bit too big to be confortable on smaller pieces.
    PS2: this saw has teeth studied for green wood... the medium teeth are way better on dry/dead wood.

    I have had the Bigboy 2000 for almmost2 years now and it is an awesome saw. Its the one I hike the mountains with here in Colorado. The size and weight are minimal especially when you get a saw that can cut through large trees with ease. I just got the Katanaboy 650 a few months ago... a little large to hike with but if you want to really cut down some stuff it is a BEAST!

  • @markdancer3501

    Chris, don’t cut the wood between the supported ends [support---cut-support. The kerf is closed up as the wood sags under gravity, which causes the binding you experienced. Instead, position the wood so one end is overhanging the support, and cut off the end [support---support-cut-end]. No binding as the kerf will be opened up by gravity. So a
    About the six minute mark you should have been standing about two paces to your left so the fork in the tree holding the log was between where you were cutting and the end of the log on the ground.

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  8 лет назад

      +Mark Dancer Yes, I know why. The support is higher than it looks. Working with what I got, where it is. Camera angles and such. Usually I can blow though it fast enough not to matter but that time it got me. I don't edit my videos so I always look good. You miss the learning points. It feels awkward to me cutting at chest level.

    I have one question. As far as the Silky Gomboy, what size diameter log would you think is the max for this size of saw? What I'm interested in doing, and the reason I ask, is because I want to make a "table" to put my quick stove on or my isobutane burner on. I want something elevated off of the ground for my burner and stove. Off the ground and out of the snow. I need a stable flat surface. about eight in or so. Plus I don't want an oversized, expensive saw.

Duterte has already threatened to cut political ties with the U.S. Actually Duterte is not the problem. Small and medium teeth have their place too. Large teeth are best for felling, green wood, and frozen wood. If you are dealing with really dry stuff, bamboo, or bushcrafting, the fine teeth are better. The good news is, you can buy the coarse tooth version and grab a spare blade in a finer profile. I hear that the spare blade will even fit in the carrying case with the saw. Changing blades takes a few seconds.

    Folks need to keep in mind, the bigger the log, the bigger the saw, same goes for medium teeth vs large teeth. For small sticks, I've found the smaller saw with a medium tooth cuts smoother with less grabbing. One other thing to keep in mind, soft woods like pines with more sap, a larger tooth gums up less than a medium. In any case, I carry a spray can of WD-40 for lube to help with binding. Thanks for the demo guys.

    Nice chris! Silky saws are great! I use nuttins trick with the wd on the blade. It makes a huge difference in the cutting speed and the saw blade getting hung up. Also, if you have the wood propped up where you make the cut, the blade will not get bound up.

  • @Levidanielz

    A good way to Fock the pinch problem is to place the tree on a rock, 2-3' put your foot on it, then let the price you want to cut off over hang. Just like if you'd be using a skillsaw "circular saw". When you cut like that with a skill saw it binds. And wants to come flying at you if you don't have the price overhang. Same concept.

    Hi. Nice saw and another good video. Just one question. Why you saw this wood from this side of tree ? You had nice, natural sawing platform on the other side of tree. It could avoid stucking saw into wood and it's safer.

      +Grzegorz Kondracki I'm going to be answering this one a lot. Better copy/paste. It's higher than it looks. Camera angles sometimes rule the day. Obviously in a perfect world. If it's a tree branch, then fine. But big stuff feels better cutting no more than waist high.

    Random, I know, but what watch is Will wearing in this video (like at 9:20 -ish)? Looks like the Timex Expedition? I really want one of those lol.

    Nothing better in my opinion. I'm a Laplander guy to but no comparison between the two......The saw was designed to bow, not a big deal

    I'm going to have to try out a Silky saw one of these days. The Gomboy looks like a good size to put in a backpack.
    I've had the Fiskars and the Bahco and they both do pretty well, but you never know if you'll like something else better if you never try it out.

    cut on the other side of your holding tree so it free falls and it won't pinch

    So Chris, the question is! What is your favourite folding saw? And what would you recommend more, the corona or a silky gomboy? 🤔 no doubt after seeing this I have to get a Bigboy! Lol

    • @preparedmind101
      @preparedmind101  8 лет назад +1

      +FailSafe I don't have a favorite "one saw". Depends on the application, and how big of wood you are trying to cut. Gomboy rides in my 72hour bag. Corona is pack mounted. Bigger firewood is where you start getting into stuff like this, or a larger bow saw. But at the get-go when you are starting out on a budget, it's hard to say no to the Corona for $17.

      +PREPAREDMIND101 100% agree on that, for the price of the corona why not get two! Thanks for the input, once again awesome video! 👍🏻

    You allso could drive a small wedge in the cut to keep it fron closing on the blade.

  • @djdjutube
    @djdjutube 7 лет назад

    Bro, position the log so that the end you'r cutting off is allowed to just fall off. You prevent binding this ways since the top of the cut starts to open up as you go, preventing the binding you experienced. You're just asking for binding by the way you did it.

  • @walteasy4sheasy
    @walteasy4sheasy 8 лет назад +1

    Will, QUIT choking up on the handle, my dude. Grab it from the opposite end! Don't push down and forward! It will bind and dull. It's a Japanese blade. It cuts on the pull stroke.
    And put the fulcrum underneath the cut! Your wood is grabbing the blade. Hahahaha. I love y'all, but FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, KIDS!!!

    Alone: Making the Cut shows Mike Lowe and Jose Martinez Amoedo with what appears to be the Silky SUGOWAZA...waiting to see if they work well for them. Same number of teeth per inch (5.5) as the Big Boy but the blade is curved more.

      propping your log in that manor is an automatic pinch point ....for any saw....let the wood hand free and drop.... it will never pinch......a small cut on the under side will keep it from splintering on those last couple of strokes.....luv your stuff bro ... would like to meet you some time .....(Y).....Sven E Munck ....FB

    Should have pulled the tree further through the support tree, and cut it from top to bottom. The wood would not have fell in on itself which created the friction pinch point, but fell from itself avoiding it all together.
