Hi Laura and Aaron! We had raspberries in zone 5 in Idaho and I don't remember them ever being pruned and they produced like crazy every year. My sister and I would pick them every other day and sell them for $3 per gallon. We probably averaged between 8-12 gallons each time we picked, and the raspberries were the size of thimbles and were so good! I don't know the variety because they were alreay planted when we moved into the house. Thank you so much for sharing!

I keep digging them up and passes them out to family & friends. I started with one plant over 15 years ago and now I have too many to count! I grew raspberries years ago, mine were starts from my sister in law's patch. I did not know at that time that pruning was needed to produce healthy plants. To say the least my patch did not survive. Wish I knew then what I just learned this morning! Maybe I will give it another try now that I am more educated! 😊✂️🌿❤

I love that you mention what to do if you don't know what kind they are. We moved to a house that had an existing green house with a bunch of different tomatoes. I have no idea what to do with them. I've never grown tomatoes before

I have June bearing but they produce almost all the raspberries at the end of July and my blackberries at the end of August. For my raspberries I have a variety of zero thorns thank God, with those I always snip the top off at the desired length this makes them stop growing upwards and put shoots all over the cane that will bear fruit that year. I just bought one gold raspberry so I’m excited to eat those this year

I grow muscadine grapes for jelly every year because it’s my favorite for jellies. I was thinking about adding one more crop to be able to make another kind, but wasn’t sure which would make the best jam, something yummy and sweet and productive. If you see and answer this, thanks in advance! If not, thanks anyways because I just love your videos 😊
I don't presume to know the answer, as I'm not Laura. However, for jarring/canning/ preserving: I think you want the type that bears heavily all at once, as opposed to slowly over the whole season.

I do know that I would want a type that would have a large harvest all at one time, same as the tomatoes that I can/jar. I’m more curious as to a flavor type/ease in growing. I know some berries are more tart than others, and some are just more flavorful and sweet, and some are just a pain to grow/maintain. I am more curious about that part. I’m not as familiar with raspberries as I am with grapes and strawberries. But I am definitely willing to learn! My family loves my homemade jellies and sauces, would be nice to have another offering for them and myself that wouldn’t be a super huge ton of work 🙂
I use a lot of my raspberries for jam. I have the fall bearing and prune the canes to the ground and do cleanup underneath in the fall. We have the dreaded Spotted-wing Drosophila here and those methods help manage them. If you find that your area also has the S-w drosophila, you can find more information about controlling them from your extension agent or just google the topic.

(I’m going to war with slugs and june bugs this year…my hostas, roses, and hibiscus can’t handle another year of them 😫) But I am curious, since you do use yours for jams…what type of raspberry do you use?? There are just so many types, I’d hate to plant one and do all that work for one that makes a yucky jam 😬

In the Northeast USA, they are almost invasive, so they don't need tons of water; but Laura lives in a desert, so everything is watered daily during growing season.
We had our second “trial” with the established raspberries. The first year I trimmed off all the old wood and their was nothing. Last year I did nothing and their was a bazillion blooms but not a whole raspberry to be found (they are fully enclosed to keep safe from deer and birds). I’m totally stumped.

We have 2nd year rambling raspberries which we mowed half down in its first year but we couldn’t understand why some branches grew fruit this 2nd year while others didn’t!!! This totally explains that now. Wow!!! Now just have to figure out if they are ever berry or the other type so will try your test!! Thanks guys!!

I watched a video you posted on June 20, 2017 and it was super helpful to see how it was before and what a difference it made with minimal changes. My first question, do you have any videos on how to make different "rooms" in a garden to give it more interest? My second question, do you have a video touring your property when you first moved in? The little bit you showed in the June 20, 2017 video was very interesting to see a small glimpse of where you started as it looks completely different now. Laura, would you cut criss-crossing canes so they don't rub against each other., like rose canes? Thank you for your imput! Love your vlogs with the cute pics of the kids through out them. Lastly, I enjoy learning about the differences such as in this vlog, June bearing vs ever bearing and seeing the different products you use to get these beds going for the season .
It’s so funny to hear that you are planting blackberries, when over here in Western Oregon they grow aggressively in every unmaintained place they can. I pick them on bike paths and fences all over my neighborhood. 😂 It just goes to show that every growing zone and climate is so different!

It would be so very helpful if gardening channels posted what USDA Zone they grow in. I had to look it up... Garden Answer is located in Ontario, Oregon with USDA Hardiness Zone 6b. I'm in Ohio USDA Zone 6a, so it's nice to now know we can grow similar even though I currently have snow.

So helpful. We planted raspberries last summer and my son cut them back in the fall. I think that was a mistake but hopefully we will get strong growth this year and change the way we prune (based on your teaching). Thank you! Off to get fertilizer and feed them!
New raspberry grower here, so, just want to clear up something wrt everbearing and pruning 1st year canes down to the ground. If I understand the process correctly, you will cut down all the 1st year growth in the spring - which is actually the beginning of year #2 for those canes. So, it took an entire growing season for those canes to grow and develop buds, but, not grow berries. Now, in year two, those canes have to start from the ground and grow, develop buds, and bloom into berries - AND you will get a bigger harvest? It seems counterintuitive, but, I would rather have a larger fall crop than two small crops spread over two seasons. I just want to make sure I am getting this down right, because it does seem counterintuitive - but, I'm a newbie and you have years of experience. Looking forward to your reply - Also, would love to see a follow-up video comparing the two pruning methods you used on your plants.
Can you propagate the canes that you cut off and start a new plant? Also, can you leave the leaves and just put compost over instead of raking them up or does that have an important benefit?

The chopping to the ground method tends to encourage spreading so keep that in mind

She's pruning them back quite a lot, they are in a raised bed, so they won't be spreading.
I was curious about that as well
They actually could over time. They will send out runners under the ground and can come up quite a ways away from the parent plant.
They can and will spread out. When Laura planted them last year, she said they would control them by removing any "runners" that escape their beds.
Yes, they sprout new ones all over in the bed. They multiply worse then rabbits. I always pull out the new ones and give them away.

In the Northeast USA, they are almost invasive, so they don't need tons of water; but Laura lives in a desert, so everything is watered daily during growing season.

It’s funny the first thing I think of in the morning is, what is Garden Answer video going to be today!
We had our second “trial” with the established raspberries. The first year I trimmed off all the old wood and their was nothing. Last year I did nothing and their was a bazillion blooms but not a whole raspberry to be found (they are fully enclosed to keep safe from deer and birds). I’m totally stumped.

Hello from Sydney Australia!!! This has to be the video where all the pennies drop!!! Thank you so much for this!!! We have 2nd year rambling raspberries which we mowed half down in its first year but we couldn’t understand why some branches grew fruit this 2nd year while others didn’t!!! This totally explains that now. Wow!!! Now just have to figure out if they are ever berry or the other type so will try your test!!

This was informative. Our raspberries are ever bearing but I did cut them all to about 1’ in the fall as well as thinned them out.
Did my berry tone this past weekend...my fall gold raspberry plants, my pink blueberry plant and my black berries are awake and leafing here in nc zone 8a

Hi Laura, I have a couple of questions. My back yard is a bunch of weeds and a teeenie bit of grass, plus it is very uneven. I watched a video you posted on June 20, 2017 and it was super helpful to see how it was before and what a difference it made with minimal changes. My first question, do you have any videos on how to make different "rooms" in a garden to give it more interest? My second question, do you have a video touring your property when you first moved in? The little bit you showed in the June 20, 2017 video was very interesting to see a small glimpse of where you started as it looks completely different now. It’s so funny to hear that you are planting blackberries, when over here in Western Oregon they grow aggressively in every unmaintained place they can. I pick them on bike paths and fences all over my neighborhood. 😂 It just goes to show that every growing zone and climate is so different!
The hybrids are bigger and have other pluses.

It would be so very helpful if gardening channels posted what USDA Zone they grow in. I had to look it up... Garden Answer is located in Ontario, Oregon with USDA Hardiness Zone 6b. I'm in Ohio USDA Zone 6a, so it's nice to now know we can grow similar even though I currently have snow.

I have the summer bearing type raspberries and I think they are a lot easier to prune, myself.
So helpful. We planted raspberries last summer and my son cut them back in the fall. I think that was a mistake but hopefully we will get strong growth this year and change the way we prune (based on your teaching). Thank you! Off to get fertilizer and feed them!

New raspberry grower here, so, just want to clear up something wrt everbearing and pruning 1st year canes down to the ground. If I understand the process correctly, you will cut down all the 1st year growth in the spring - which is actually the beginning of year #2 for those canes. So, it took an entire growing season for those canes to grow and develop buds, but, not grow berries. Now, in year two, those canes have to start from the ground and grow, develop buds, and bloom into berries - AND you will get a bigger harvest? It seems counterintuitive, but, I would rather have a larger fall crop than two small crops spread over two seasons.
I just want to make sure I am getting this down right, because it does seem counterintuitive - but, I'm a newbie and you have years of experience.
Looking forward to your reply - Also, would love to see a follow-up video comparing the two pruning methods you used on your plants.

Can you propagate the canes that you cut off and start a new plant?
Also, can you leave the leaves and just put compost over instead of raking them up or does that have an important benefit?
Very helpful! I was just pruning mine willy-nilly, cutting them shorter. Had a bumper crop but now I get to see what a strategic cutting will do!
