  • Top lures for catching walleye through the ice when fishing Lake Winnipeg. Winnipeg is gigantic water with the chance for giant fish. Big flutter spoons like the CPT Peg Flutter Spoon can catch big fish. Tip with a frozen shiner and fish them with an aggressive pumping high lift.
Other favorite spoons include the CPT Super Leech Flutter Spoon which is a little thicker and doesn’t wander to the side as much as some other spoons. This spoon has been one of our best overall lures on Winnipeg the past handful of winters.
Another productive lure category on Winnipeg is rattle baits like the Live Target, Ripping Rap and Hard Knocker. These baits are a great search lure or right away in the morning when fish seem more aggressive.
Finally, we show an example of more of a finesse presentation that works well on Winnipeg, a smaller CPT Ribbon Flutter Spoon with an upsized treble hook where we added a stinger hook for working a full minnow. When you down size on Winnipeg, try to not down size hooks.
You have to pinch the barbs down on all lures so the best thing we have found is to upsize or use a larger hook and use braided line for the bigger fish. Tighten up your drag a little bit and simply winch the fish in where you are not moving or pumping the rod.

Thanks Jason good info about upsizing the hooks and keeping the pressure on the fish without the barbs on the hook

Fished Winnipeg for the first time about a month ago. Your advice about not pumping the rod is golden. Buddy I fished with couldn’t grasp the concept and kept losing fish. All the lures you showed are proven. I had my best luck on a shad colored Jackall worked aggressively. When the fish slowed I actually had my best luck with a bright UV jig. Quite a fishery. Walleyes with an attitude. Glad I had a guide though with such big water and rugged conditions.

What rod holder are you using in your side-by-side?
