  • Perhaps the very best big walleye destination in the world for ice anglers. Lake Winnipeg routinely produces walleye well over twelve pounds each winter. Jason Mitchell joins Donovan Pearase of Blackwater Cats Outfitters in mid January to showcase the trophy walleye potential. Bone crushing hits on magnum sized flutter spoons!

    First 5 minutes of the show and I can not wait until March to return to the Big Windy! Had an amazing time last year. Another great episode Jason and crew!

    FYI, if you’re out in the middle of winter here in the cold -20c and below. Do not hold the fish out if your not in a hot tent/shack. Their eyes will freeze in seconds and will go blind.

    Just before the mad rush (2007) it was amazing up there . You could ride a sled out of EOM and head to the mouth , and wouldn't see anyone else on the ice other than 1-2 hard side houses (locals). Occasionally a sled with a huge Canadian flag hanging off the back of the sled was out there running around, saw that guy frequently. Biggest was 15 lbs 11oz , great memories.

      +Chad Halvorson for sure hardly anybody fished the lake at that time. People fished the river and were scared to death of the lake.

    What a great episode. Would’ve been nice to maybe mention the barbless hooks a lil better so that our American Friends know, but I trust they’ll do their research.. 😉
    Again, fantastic video 👍

      I did my Greenback bucket list trip in 2013 late February. I arrived at midnight and the temperature had been in the mid 30’s for 3-4 days and the locals were having 100+ fish days. Well, the cold front hit and it was single digits by time I went out that first morning. First hole punched near a shove and within minutes had a 28” toad on the ice. That was great. Temps continued to drop and I was stuck in a portable with heater just to survive at -20F. Ended up day 1 with 6-7 fish total. Day 2 it was so cold neither of my snowmobiles would start as the recoils were basically froze up. Got a lift out with some locals and everyone averaged 2-3 fish by noon. That was it for me and left early not wanted to wait out the weather. 2 days later my new Canadian friends were texting me pics of many fish again as the wether had warmed back up into the teens. Was glad to have went and tried it once - just missed the real experience due to a brutal cold snap…..that’s why I still watch these videos to live vicariously through others who times it right!

    Jason - is there much difference between the Flutter Spoon you used ice fishing and a common daredevil I use for northern pike casting?

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  4 года назад

      +MN farmer farmer a Dardevil is heavier and thicker then the Flutter Spoon but would probably work at times. KO Wobblers were hot a few years ago and they have a similar weight but just wider.

    Great video. I've asked this question a number of times on different links but have yet to get a response. Why do I see ice fishing anglers use that awkward looking grip on the rod? I've heard some reference it as the "pistol grip". I've tried it and don't see any benefit of this other than it being a pain in the wrist over time. Thanks

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  4 года назад

      I like to use a pistol grip a lot just to get a tight quiver or bounce on the lure and I find that my wrist is faster on the initial hookset. Also more comfortable for keeping the rod tip lower towards the hole. Good luck and thanks for watching!

    So why are you using a RJ flutter spoon when your sponsored by clam? Rj makes that exact spoon, can't find any evidence that clam makes one like that

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors
      @JasonMitchellOutdoors  2 года назад

      Not familiar with the RJ Spoon. The spoon I was using was the Clam Peg Flutter Spoon.

    • @isaachofer753
      @isaachofer753 2 года назад

      @@JasonMitchellOutdoors the spoon your using in the video is an RJ spoon, they make that exact pattern, front and back. The clam peg spoons have a silver back.

    • @JasonMitchellOutdoors

      The color is called Pink Lightning and it has a metallic chartreuse back.
