The Dung needs an airduct from the roof to the turbo, and an expasion tank for the coolant. Also the fuel tank needs to be 4" further back. Additional ducting would help the radiator, but how to build it is a bit trickier than usual.. Lifting the frunk from the hinges for about 2" would be a decent start.
200 is about normal for Subaru motors, also the OE pump might be struggling to move water to the front radiator setup, could go completely electric relatively easily and have complete control over flow/volume. All in all I’d say it’s healthy and you really don’t have to worry until it’s in the upper 220s and not coming back down
Old VW guy here -- Seen the Subi swaps a lot --- The best way is to move the rear fire wall forward 10-12" and move the radiator into that new area -- supply some fresh air ducting into that and almost all your cooling problems will be over.... you'll be fighting that front radiator and air bubbles forever... Do a little youtube research and you'll find some Assie guys that have done that to get you some video help.
so glad to see you guys still going strong wish I could just come out and help you work on something and hang out just to laugh my ass off you guys are hilarious
You mentioned possible air in cooling system .Where is highest point ? Maybe add a bleeder aka fill point at engine depending on height ... Love this car !
Hah hah, the Dung Beetle lives!! Considering the outside air temp, I'm surprised it stayed as cool as it did! You may need to make a shroud of sorts to direct more air into that radiator and maybe a stronger fan. And for Pete's sake, get that fuel pump in some rubber mounts. Gawd, that thing is *LOUD!!* You'll definitely need some wheelie bars once you get the kinks out and start making some good power with that Subie motor! Heck, you can pull the front wheels with a well-built 2130 cc bug engine! You can pretty much predict what a Subaru engine will do making close to twice the horsepower!!😂👍 It already sounds pretty healthy up on the pipe, just in the short pull you did! Nice work guys!!😁
Sure you guys are working out the kinks by now! I’m doing this conversion on my own beetle and what I learnt about the cooling system is with a radiator it’s more important getting air out of the back than in the front of it if that makes sense
It makes sense because f more air is leaving the back it creates a negative air pressure inside(ie a vaccume) which inturn sucks more air in from the front
Yea I'm doing a vr6 swap I'm planning on running radiator up front cut a grill. But put a cylinder fuel cell up on the Frunks "firewall" and weld nuts on the bottom and have a screen insert over the front steering mechanisms. That should do the trick.
@@chrissweetavena Why a VR6? Sounds like a lot of work for minimal returns fitting that large engine in a bug. Seems like you'd have to take the entire firewall out because it's so high... or stick it way out the back. I think you'd be better off with the 2.5 flat 6 from a bus, that engine bolts right in the back of a bug, is air-cooled so no need for a radiator, they make bore kits for it... even 4 valve per cylinder kits so you could probably make it way faster.. If you're after power, a flat 6 with a 3.0 bore kit and 24 valves would blow the doors off a 12 valve 2.8 VR6. Even if they make the same power and torque the air-cooled engine will be much lighter. Liquid cooled is cool but then the boxer 4 turbo from a Subaru would fit easier and be an easier swap that's less intrusive to build into your chassis.. Not knocking btw, it's your car and you should do whatever you want to your stuff off course so if you want to do the LC conversion with the vr6 more power to you... just wondering.
One thing that comes to my mind with the cooling is the one thing that many people overlook. I have saw cars that did not have a thermostat in overheat, and run cooler once the thermostat was in just because the thermostat made a resistance that kept the water in the radiator longer. When dealing with temperature problems on custom cars it's very easy to not think about the fact that water has to stay in your radiator long enough to get cool. Not sure what the situation is because you have a rear engine car which I normally would know to be air-cooled but I know you have a radiator up front with a lot of hoses. Whatever your setup is you guys are smart just remember to make sure that your your water is staying in the radiator long enough to get cooled down.
I got to meet them in Ohio. It was the first time in my life i ever been to a live event! of any kind. It was the best bday to meet them. They are the only reason I ever started watchin Street Outlaws.
Ive had a few bugs back in the day i had a 1959 vw Beattel 36 hp motor all original, ive allways loved the Dungbettel and watched it evolve into what it is today 💯💯💯💯💯
4:41 A vertical shifter 🤣 ! I knew you'd have to have one of those eventually . Peace and respect from an old hippy in UK . Oops , I said that out loud didn't I ? I love you guys . Pete
Time for a S-10 farm truck or a short wide C10, short wheelbase to match the dung beetle size, then run it in the small tire races. Love the Dung! That's my favorite OnCue you keep passing
Don't know if you guys will read this but some jeep style hold downs could possibly work great on dung beetle. Also I need another don't trust the rust bandana
Love the fact they're getting back to small tire production based cars. I remember when pulling up to the line in what was basically a promod would start a fight pretty quick.
Cool to see the Dung back out. Guy I hung out with in the 90s had a V-gate shifter in his 70 SS Chevelle. The modern version is way better. It was still badass for the time.
I’m glad to see the Dung back in action ever since I last saw it on Street Outlaws, I might wanna copy your setup one day Azn, except put the engine in the front and LS swap it
Add a port at the engine end to use a vacuum pump such as a brake bleeding pump to pull air from the cooling system. You can also add a pressurized cooling system as in Nascar or circle track cars.
I'm big fan of you guys I love the farm truck an the dung bettle I always watch street outlaw see what you guys are doing an what crazy shit you going to do on there
Can't wait to see the Dung Beetle bust out a can whoop ass on the 405 Crew and who ever else wants some also I hope to see some fishing again who agree's with me

Man, I'd love a ride in the Dung! Been a minute since I've come to visit, and I don't have an excuse since I'm 2 miles from the Firehouse. You guys were the main reason I watched SO. And I'm still down for that scooter race any time!
I really enjoy watching you guys. I haven't been able to watch y'alls show. I don't have cable. I did get to watch yall on the og street outlaws show when I did have cable. Y'all seem cool to hangout with. I would like to be y'alls friend and hang out.
Need to set the fuel tank back as far as possible or go to a shallower depth but wider tank, the fuel tank is definitely having an effect on the air flow out of the rad. Mount the fan as a puller not a pusher unit to draw cold air in....now all that air that's passed through the radiator also has to be funnelled out. If you follow the chrome side trim, there's a small triangular area behind the front guard that finishes at the panel gap. I'd cut out this area as much as possible and then weld in some mesh, it'll help with moving air through the rad. allowing it to exhaust. If the under bonnet/hood temps. Are still high you could add a small thermo fan, biggest that'll fit, to the inside of the mesh area to force that hot air out. You could set them up to turn on via relays switched to ignition, on a stand alone thematic switch or pinned in to the haltech using an IAT sensor set at the desired temp. Fitting a header/coolant expansion tank would also be a worthwhile idea, find one that has the right amount/sized outlets for your application. I've personally fitted/used, with fantastic results, vw/Audi expansion tanks with the mounting hardware sourced from a wrecking yard.
I understand the cut up hood is a personality thing of the car. I hope it grows out of this faze and does some self improvement and try something different but still keeping it individual look
Run some e85. Not sure if your just running pump gas. That’ll probably solve your cooling issue. Imma big fan since the og days. Glad to see u guys are goin back to your roots , and you two will be back racing.
First off love the show guys keep up the great work glad to see you guys are on RUclips now. question You have the radiator in the front you have great ventilation going into the radiator but where is all the hot air going through the holes in the firewall to keep you guys warm in the cabin no I’m just kidding just wondering about that because I was thinking about that and thought I would ask you guys about it besides that love the way it turned out can’t wait to see more I’m a Volkswagen enthusiast myself And I am rooting for the dung beetle
Jack the front of the car open bleeder at the radiator if no bleeder cracked the hose just slightly. You will see bubbles let idle for a few minutes. Do the same procedure raising the back of the car opening the bleeder at the engine. if no bleeder crack a hose let run for a few minutes it’ll make a world of difference we install the Subaru engine can VW buses here in Fresno California and that is our bleed procedure temperature will stabilize Subaru engine will be happy. Man that Bettle is the DUNG. Love that car!!!!!!
I missed seeing that car in action. Such an impressive combo.
Air bubbles in the system would definitely explain the cooling issues. Have you tried vacuum filling it? It’s the best way to eliminate bubbles 👍
I agree. I vacuum fill all the cars I work on. I just do it so I don’t have to worry about it.
Not necessarily the radiator might be to small I'm thinking.
Or easy way is to jack the front off the car up very hi and leave for 24 hrs too
