Several sleepless nights playing the original. Fun fact: if you played on Christmas Day, the suit of armor in the first room with the three doors became a Christmas tree.
Coolest thing my 4-year-old eyes had ever seen!
I believe in the studio's other game, Airborne, on Christmas day the cactus became a Christmas tree >_
@@broadwayLamb78 Wow, what you're saying is true. Thanks for reminding me of that lovely detail from the game. It was the game of my childhood!!!
So, basically, this was originally meant to be a PC/Mac type port, but when it comes to porting it to Genesis and CD-i, they left the Mac controls in tact and tried using the Genesis/CD-i buttons to map over it. Man, what an idiotic flaw from the creators. That’s like trying to port an advanced FPS game on an NES with very limited buttons, and try shoving in every action possible, even on d-pad or combination of movement and action buttons.
Thank you! The art in this game inspired me to become an illustrator.
That's awesome!
One of my favorites, though I never got good enough to beat it as a kid. Some of the best graphics at the time, I thought.
Agree!
I have many fond memories playing this game with my dad and brother when I was a boy in the second half of the 80’s.
I know you are not going to believe it but I once played it for a whole night and by morning I had gotten 1.600.000 points, and as it was time to go to work I had to "suicide" allowing the rats to kill me 86 times. Best game I ever played...
It took forever to finally beat this game... on the easiest difficulty. I've always loved the control scheme of the game, even if the level of precision needed was excruciating at times. Edit: Holy crap, I hadn't realized he went on to create Macromedia Flash! I'm an animator, and have been using Flash and it's descendant Animate professionally for nearly 25 years now. Excellent documentary!
00:40 No "Gamers Rule" and "Saddam was here" ?
Interesting to hear about the original version. The black and white graphics are lovely and moody.
Best game of all time..
Best game EVER !!! All my childhood
I played this as a kid. It was my favorite game on the Mac 512ke
My friend and I used to make it a 2 player. One of us on the direction keys, the other on the mouse. Worked a treat and great fun.
Amazing and insightful overview of an unforgettable game
Oh man, these production values! This might be your best work so far.
I have a lot of fond memories of this game, though I do remember playing Beyond Dark Castle more. Great to hear the full history and developers' perspectives on this. Thanks for putting it all together!
Oh my god, for some reason, I never remembered playing this game until I saw it played recently on someones channel and the memories are flooding back to me and from my fresh memory coming back, this game was bad and very hard, it was so stupid hard and now I know it was by design...
14:28 Apparently it was never released on Steam, I didn't find anything about it.
what a memories, I remember I could not finish it but I had lot of creepy fun at the time being!
The Galaga "rip-off" is apparent, for sure, but I swear that my first thought was Satan's Hollow on the screen with the dragon.
Ooh, good catch, that was probably a bigger influence there.
Yeah. Original Dark Castle was amazing, and tons of fun.
This game is like Flashback on steroids.
Well done video - thanks so much for the memories and information.
Is there a way to emulate this on Steam Deck?
Dark Castle is the Dark Souls of 1980s computer platformers.
Mi primer juego , me encanta
I sold copies of this to people who then said, it is too hard!
80s kid here, this the first video game i ever played
The rotating arm thing is still bad
Real shame that if you search for Dark Castle the top result by far is just someone whining about the Genesis version. You'd think he could have taken 3 seconds to look into the game's origin. Anyway, fantastic video. I'm eagerly awaiting the day you become the classic Mac version of LGR! :)
Its a poop game
"someone whining about the genesis version"
@@citrusreality64 "Someone". My dude, that is JAMES FUCKING ROLFE

When you said it was on Steam I was so there. I immediately paused your video, went looking for it, couldn't find it, unpaused your video, then learned that it was only on Mac... Sob.
It's also currently out of date and won't work on newer Mac OS systems... and will unlikely be updated. So very few people can play it these days, sadly.
Same here ;-;
And kudos Sir, for this splendid video!
First game that ever used WASD and the mouse simultaneously.
thanks for the video
I love this game! Been lookin to download this game but unable to find it. Any idea where if ever I can it?
Is the "color remake" of Dark Castle another botched port or is it the same game? I ask because I'm thinking about playing it on my imac g3.
No, that's a really solid remake and is a great way to play it
This is one of the greatest video games ever made!!
I played this on an Amiga 500.
Sir-Tech's Wizardry for Apple II used the W-A-D cluster, circa 1981
Excellent game.
