WOW. My grandma had this game on her Mac in 1988. She and my mom couldn't pry me away from it as a 10 year old. Even hearing all the silly sound effects brings back great memories. This game somehow felt more interactive and interesting than Nintendo games of the time.
I'm playing this game currently May 2022 on a 2010 27" iMac. I must have downloaded it off of the Apple App Store some years ago. Originally I had bought this game for my then Mac SE20 back in the 80's. (20 standing for 20 megabytes of hard drive memory) and remember playing it avidly. I can't recall it being so difficult like the now 2000 version. It is so much fun to watch someone else play these games on RUclips because we all go through the same cussing I mean heartaches. Thanks for putting this up!
Haha, so many near-death experiences, and a couple times where the gargoyle got uncomfortably close in this long run. And a long jump through a bolt on that last guard. 😅 Good memories.
I remember playing this game but, I had difficulty getting all crystal balls for each pedestal for the big gate to open. Seeing it here as you are in the chamber of the Black Knight, I probably wouldn't of been able to beat that chamber. Also seeing it here, I see it's a little disappointing that you don't win anything or be claimed as a hero for defeating the Black Knight after maybe rescuing a princess since I learned that the character you are playing as is named as Prince Duncan and if you rescue a princess, the ending could have shown that they kissed and/or got married. But instead all you get is congratulated for defeating the Black Knight showing how much points you received.
@@PlayDifferent Wow, that's great to know. Also yes, I tried playing on the "Advanced" level but, it was very hard for me to even get one crystal ball. Even the "Intermediate" level was hard but, I only played in the "Beginner" level and was only able to get four crystal balls but never the fifth one. Also, that sounds funny for Prince Duncan to be the new Black Knight because the Black Knight was a bad guy so I thought it would have sounded better if Duncan rescued a princess whom he fell in love with. Unfortunately I don't have a Macintosh anymore so I probably won't be able to play this game again but, that's okay.
Awesome game! I was wondering... how did you record this game onto RUclips? Is it played on an actual Macintosh Plus or on an emulator? I would really love to hook my old Macintosh plus up to a regular tv! Any info would be greatly appreciated! :-)
What game console was this version on? Or could it be the Gameboy, since it's colorless? Was this just something someone has done in recent years and redone it to make it playable from the shitty ones in the past that are not playable at all and pisses people off to even attempt to play it?
This is the original 1988 game for the black and white Macintosh. The original versions of the Dark Castle games are fun and playable, if unforgiving and clunky at first. All the ports to other systems were terrible.
I must say that brings back old memories... been playing it on a mac II when i was ten.

I remember this game, the sound effects were hilarious and annoying. Also, if you play on Christmas there are stockings up on the fireplace.

Very cool. Now be the first person to record a complete run of Return to Dark Castle.

Good memories.
This looks a 1000 times better than what the Sega got. What the heck happen there?
I remember seeing my dad defeating the knight and me, later on (but still very young, like 6 or 7), accidentally overwriting that save. Sorry dad. >_
Great game.! I was fanatic in my 10… Where can i find this game now…?
This game is amazing. The final battle is so much easier than final battle on Dark Castle.
This one looks and plays a lot better than Sega and CDI versions.
How did you jump through the arrow shot by the guard right before you got to the black knight?

If you beat the game on the hardest difficulty, you get a true ending where Duncan becomes the new Black Knight

This was an emulator!
