I wonder if a passing comment along the lines of "Look, we all need to blow off steam. If we crack, what good are we in the coming fight?" would fix the tonal issues with the DLC? Meanwhile, nearly watched all your vids in a handful of days. Sub, Bell, all the good stuff. ;)
I think Bioware devs just had a bunch of ideas that they hadn't been able to fit into the game anywhere else & came up with the clone idea (possibly one of those ideas) as a baseline for collating all this fan service into a cohesive package.
Its clear that the team that worked on the Citadel DLC is not the same one that was working on the base game. Hence why there's a bit of left hand- right hand going on.
I agree with you, it's a really good DLC and great fan service, though it is tone deaf. I just can't think of a way they could have done the DLC and it not require suspension of the overall story. It really belongs at the conclusion of the trilogy, but you can't really do that because of how it ends. For this reason, it's always the last thing I do before I go do the ending whenever I do a play through of the trilogy as kind of a final send off to the run. By the way I like your videos, watched the horizon series so far and love them. I would say that I'd love to see a Witcher 3 one from you some day, since I noticed you mention it several times in the Horizon series as one of your favorites. It's one of my tops as well, so if you ever find yourself making one I'd watch it.
That's the only thing that was always anoing me about this DLC. "We don't have time to party" sentiment should be atleast more prominent suring the story, if nothing else. But other than that, i'm willing to see past that and enjoy it for what it is. Thank you for your content. I like the way you structure the videos and how you build your arguments, last but not least, since you have a nice voice, it gives to the video that perfect "video essey vibe". i hope to see more content from you. Your take on Horizon was most enjoyable. I wonder what would you consider next. Last of Us, Red Dead 2, or something similarly narative heavy would be something i'd love to see you disect. Thank you for your hard work, so people like me can sit down, turn on RUclips and relax
I like to play Citadel *after* Earth. The bonus for completing it is negligible but after the main story has finished, it feels like a nice soothing balm rather than this jarring tonal shift.
This is the headspace for it - the one the devs had and the one they expected most fans to have. It was the last DLC and came out months after the game if I recall correctly. The DLC was not meant to be played in the middle of a regular playthrough, or at least it was not primarily written with that in mind. It was meant to be played by reloading the last savegame before Cronus Station. A goodbye to the series, the fans, the beloved universe, the cherished characters.
I came very late to the ME Trilogy, but my understanding is that the devs wedged in this dlc after the fact because they got roasted by the players for the original shit ME3 ending. The fact that they gave it a 'wacky caper with the whole crew' tone was a choice. You didn't mention this in your vid, but the tone is doubly effed up when you include the memorial service for Thane in the mix (and especially wrenching as FemShep who romanced him). Meh, it is what it is and there is really no good place to play it in 3 without feeling the dissonance.
I dont think anyone cares about the tonal imbalance because of how much fun it is & how its the greatest love letter to the fans ever created.
