  • Yes, it's finally that time - we tackle the wiring harness and install the M Unit on our project FXR. Buckle up, because this is a long one - and there's no fast forwarding. We really did our best to show you every bit of this that we could. In this segment we get the M Unit installed and the new wiring harness in as well. We'll do a follow-up video down the road to show it in operation.
The wiring diagram referenced in the video can be found on FXR Division's M Unit product page here:

I added the M Unit Blue to my 79 Shovelhead FXE to Custom Chopper build. The old circuit breakers and wiring were done by gremlins with chewing gum (Wires shorting and melting together). The M Unit is the answer. When I was doing mine I couldn't find squat online and had to trail and error it. Your video is comprehensive and awesome. Thank you so much.

I’ve got an m-unit on backorder for my ‘76 shovel rebuild. Would love to know what tips and tricks you figured out when sorting through your build with this.

Excellent, excellent video on installing the M unit on a FXR. I have been planning to install one on my FXR for some time now, and now have some direction on how to start. Thank you Shep for the whole FXR series of videos. Your articulate, and cohesive manner on how you look and work on motorcycles is the best I have experienced on a video! Keep up the great work!

Dude can’t wait to start wiring my FXR just installed my Motogadget on the same FXR division plates. And man they made it easy. But this gives me more confidence to make my harness. Was also thinking of making a few harnesses since I know not to many people run a M unit nor do they ever record the process of the wiring. All in all man 10/10 on your explanations and the work you do. Can’t wait to get my 84 FXRT back up and running.

It's like you read my mind.. I have a 1992 FXRP basket case I picked up last year and installing a S&S lower end built motor. Doing a 6 speed transmission and chain drive as well. Owner stripped everything down for powder coating, and it ended there. With you guys, who needs a shop manual. Very good instructions and excellent coverage. Keep up the great videos.

Hey, absolutely excellent presentation and brief! The biggest takeaway/value, in my mind, is the explanation you provided regarding when it makes sense to use the M-Unit and when it does not make sense to use it. In my mind, that in itself was worth watching the entire video! Thanks much!

This video is GOLD!! Thank you for doing this!! I understand this a lot better. My setup will be a little different with the M button from motogadget, all my hand control wiring will be located in the bars and send signals to the unit when they will be turned on or off. Keep up the good work!! Love this series

Great video. This mirrors my mUnit install on my FXRD almost exactly. I would highly recommend using the wiring diagram referenced in the video, as well as buying motogadgetfxr's wiring kit, which comes with every wire that you need. The kit also comes with a very cool bracket that allows for placement of deustch connectors on the left side of the bike as well as the right. On my bike, I also used the m button, which eliminates a lot of the wires coming from the bars. I also used the mUnit Blue that has Bluetooth connectivity. The nice thing about the Blue unit is that you can program the different functionalities from your phone.

Hey hope you're doing great man. Know you have allot on your plate, but could you ever make a video explaining when you use anti sieze or locktight and how that affects torque values? Recently snapped a rusty exhaust stud and royally f*d up my cylinder head trying to get it out. Being a beginner DIYer, i feel like the info out there on things as basic as these is very limited yet it's super important.
Now in the process of seeing if I can find anyone who can do a repair on the head still on the bike, or removing it and taking it to a machine shop. Just sucks because hindsight is 20/20 and I know that with more patience and some basic knowledge problem could have been avoided 100%
Sorry to vent lol, but either way keep on killin it man, really loving this build series.

watched the video a bunch. looks like you used the smallest gauge wiring suggested, except for the grounds. true? the wiring diagram from motogagdet suggests using the 1.5mm wire in their kit for all the outputs. id prefer to use the 0.5mm stuff, any thoughts? thanks

I avoid stuff like this for one reason. If it fails or needs repairs in the future, I can't pull into a shop and get it fixed in the middle of a trip or get parts easily. And aftermarket companies can come and go. And some shops wont touch stuff like this if they didn't install it.
As a traveler by bike and 4x4, easy access to parts and repaiabilty is key.
For an around town, bar hooper or weekend bike, it's fine.
