Striper Fishing Next To The Freeway At San Luis Reservoir

San Luis Reservoir is a tricky lake to fish. With so much water to cover its very intimidating if you’re unfamiliar with the lake. But one things for sure, year round, you can find stripers deep.
That’s why I love fishing for them deeper in the water column. It’s a location that’s not regularly pressured by other anglers and there for the taking…if you have the right tools.
I started the day trolling my Atlas Rigs in Cottonwood Bay. Immediately I hookup. For the next few hours, pass after pass, stripers were hammering the Atlas rigs. Most fish caught were in the 40-50’ zone. Other boaters in the area jigging or setting bait didn’t fair too well.
Scouted other areas from Romero Point to basalt but didn’t see much or saw mostly dinks. Decided to try the west side of the lake in 60’ of water and saw stripers near the bottom.
Caught several here trolling the Atlas Rigs. These stripers are more active and will swim up from the bottom to checkout the rigs. Most will short strike or checkout the rigs and swim away but you’ll run into active stripers that will hammer the rig as soon as they see it. That’s why trolling and covering water is so effective.
Finished the day with 25+ stripers to 22”. You can see a shift in the bite with the receding water. Each week the bite is just slightly different from the next. By next month, it’ll be a completely new pattern. Get while you can Fam.
