Great overview of one of our well-traveled road trip routes! I don't want to admit just how many wine tasting trips we have done to Paso... We have a Rocket Fizz in Ventura, but Ranch Dressing soda? Eek...
    J. Lohr is a great winery - their Hilltop Cab is excellent ~ great place for a picnic too!

I agree, I have driven this road a ton of times and have been to Paso Robles a bunch as well! I didn't try the ranch soda but I think it probably wouldn't be too good haha. Hilltop Cab is an excellent suggestion, I wish I had some right now!

I was in California last year, drove from San Francisco to Santa Monica on route 1. Amazing. i`ll be 50 in 3 years and will do same route plus from Santa Monica to Chicago on route 66.

      May I make a suggetion?
Don't leave CA already at Santa Monica!
Do continue South along the coast to Laguna Beach and visit the coves and the great beach cafees/mexican restaurants. Then continue South to Oceanside for a walk on the beach and go all the way to San Diego, which is a great city to spend a couple of days in (or more).
Then back North towards the 66 either through Escondido and Temecula or a detour through the San Bernadino National Forest.
After all, you only get to 50 once.

Dude, Your living the dream! Love to follow and check out locations on Google maps as you talk about each location.
Only advice is to invest in a convertible! Makes that seaside drive so much better!

Thanks for the comment as always! I agree a convertible would make it a lot more fun to drive the coast.

You hit a lot of the highlights that I most love about the central coast. Thanks for posting this. Funny how so many people just fly right past Ventura and miss all that it has to offer. We got hammered pretty hard by the fires last year but the beach and the downtown food culture and general beach/surfer vibe still thrives in this small but very cool little place. You should check it out. For food, Main Street old town rocks. Nightlife there has finally taken hold. And Ventura has lots of amazing breakfast places, though my fav is Cafe Nouveau. And Ventura is bear Ojai which has its own charm. And the two towns are connected by this terrific bike trail that follows the old railroad tracks line and replaced it with something way cooler. Check it out

Love your Road trips. Next time you head up, check out Babcock winery in Santa Rita. Not only do they own Walt's Wharf, amazing seafood, in Seal Beach, CA, they make the best Pinots (IMHO) also since you like records, Babcock has an amazing collection to listen to, buy and drink to while visiting.
Then I recommend going on the Santa Ynez wine trail and stop at Fess Parker, he was Disney's Daniel Boone. The Parker family are famous in Santa Barbara, Santa Ynez and San Olivos. Many other great wineries on that wine trail and not as far away as Paso Robles
Your blog on the CA Missions has created a goal for my wife and I!

With everything you guys did it must have taken 8 hours to get to Paso!! It’s actually 3:20 to Paso Robles to LA. I do the drive several times a month. Avila barn makes the BEST baked goods. Also, Bread of Life on Los Alamos is fabulous.

Great video (as always)... Have you covered San Luis Obispo before? Is there anything worth seeing around Lancaster or Palmdale (apart from the road that plays music when you drive on it)?

I have been to San Luis many times, I always love exploring the area. I haven't done much in Lancaster/Palmdale though so, unfortunately, I don't have a lot of recommendations.

Congratulations from Italy! My family and I are coming to California this summer. In our vacation, on one day we will travel by car from Pasadena up to Carmel-by-the-Sea (via no. 5, no. 46 and no. 101). Which are the best places to visit along the way? Thank you very much!
