From what I recall "It Has To Be This Way" was meant to be Raidens perspective on this battle but considering that it's also Raidens realization that his goals are similar to Armstrongs but he approaches them differently, it could be considered a hero honoring a worthy opponent
Though if going by that logic then that mean it can still be a song that can be seen in Armstrong’s point of view
I think The music IS from both sides. " I followed My path, You followed your wrath". They are singing at The same time .
Because You can undertand The " your wrath" as Raiden embracing his violent past to help in The present againts desperados. And from armstrong perspective in The American sistem of politics.

Edit: if you listen to both songs one after the other you can really tell that these songs are responses to each other, and I love that.

@@RemnantElementorYeah persona 5 Music is probably my top 5 contender for best music and probably top 3. There is just such good music of several emotions that it's crazy. I heard some other smt music mostly p3r and smt5 but p5 and p5r take the cake not made by a sociopathic ai.

Also, shouldn't we have a musical video game by now? Like, as in a video game with characters breaking out into song? We clearly have the capability. We should be far beyond the one-offs by now.

@@captainandrew45 Yeah Oggie's Revenge is definitely the closest we've ever gotten to something like that.
Also, you could argue that rhythm games could count as musical games, but the only other rhythm game besides Oggies Revenge I can think of where villain and hero sing is Guitar Hero 3.
@@newbiegamelover4767 There is a rhythm/boss-rush game coming out that each stage has you fight you fighting a boss that sings their own themes.
I did not expect "Edge of Dawn" nor "Throw Away Your Mask". It was a new and pleasant point of view to two songs from some of my favorite games.
is Edelgard really a villain song (since you can work with her) and would the other houses count as villain songs ?
@@WhiteDarkness3113 Yeah, I thought "Edge of Dawn" was a bit of a weird choice for the list. Edelgard is really only a villain in the Blue Lions route; she's an anti-hero of varying levels of "anti" in the others. If anything, the real villains are the criminally underused Those Who Slither in the Dark. There was so much potential with them, too, especially since they had access to modern/futuristic weaponry... imagine a sequel to Edelgard's route that showcased the full horrors of modern warfare while also considerably ramping up the intensity and tough moral decisions Edelgard would have to make in attempting to fight off such a lethal threat.
I'm so happy to see Throw Away Your Mask on here! I'm super into Persona 5 now that I've watched Let's Plays of Royal and Strikers, and this song captures the spirit of the Third Semester antagonist so well (not to mention it's just a beautiful song).
@@KingdomHeartsBrawler On the other hand, it could be said that the beauty of Edge of Dawn is that it makes her out to be the villain of her own story regardless of if you side with her. The very fact that she sees herself as a villain validates it as a villain song, not excusing herself for the sake of good intentions.
I didn't expect them either, but I can definitely see why he put them on the list. While I, personally, prefer God Shattering Star as a song overall, Edge of Dawn is definitely the better "Villain Song", and when it comes to Throw Away Your Mask...I'm not the biggest fan of it or the game it came from (I've always been more of a Persona 4 fan), I acknowledge that it's worthy of being on the list.
It's a shame "E.G.G.M.A.N." wasn't on this list (even as an honorable mention)... at least he used it in the background in the intro.

I can't stop laughing at how the villain at Number 10 was Joker while the hero at Number 2 was also Joker.
Having listened to FF14's "To the Edge" I still personally consider it one of my personally favorite songs. I am not fully sure it counts as a villain song but it has always given me the vibes of it representing the laments of the Ascians and their fight against the Scions. From the perspective of Elidibus.
Definitely think it deserves consideration. I would also suggest that "God in Fire" from Dissidia 012 would be a worthy inclusion.

You know if you think about it, To The Edge reminds me of Throw Away Your Mask, and not by lyrics but by the point of it, The Unsundered and most obvious Elidibus are the heroes of their own story, Emet-Selch and Lahabrea may have been devious with their actions and Elidibus' plan is basically butchering a title, but their intent is to restore their home and bring their people back, that is something I love, Lahabrea may not be the least interesting character, but Emet-Selch he's a sympathetic mastermind who has a point, and Elidibus nearly succeeded in his plan if weren't for The Warrior of Light, plus their songs are just fantastic!

Villain video game songs are so underrated
Ya I’ve been waiting for this one.
One of my favorite villain songs is With Me from Sonic and the Black Knight, mostly how it's song from two villain perspectives let me explain this song is seen from both Sonic's perspective and Merlina's perspective basically the lyrics from Sonic's point of view paint him in our eyes/the player's eyes as this noble borderline anti-hero but from Merlina's point of view Sonic is the noble anti-villain the one using noble actions in order to hasten Camelot's end and only she can stop him from causing Camelot's end, and the lyrics from Merlina's point of view reveal her to be this tragic anti-villainess who had noble intentions she just wanted to protect Camelot, and it's inhabitants but she let her fear of Camelot's natural end drive to commit acts we can clearly see as villainous acts. This final bit of dialogue between Sonic and Merlina before their fight kind of hint at the theming of the song:
Merlina: "By helping haste Camelot's destruction you have proven to be no noble knight."
Sonic: "Guess I can't play the hero all the time."
And yes I liked Sonic and the Black Knight.
Agreed,Pokémon,sonic,and the Mario and Luigi series have the best final boss themes in my opinion

And the reason I was hoping the theme from _Myst III: Exile_ counted* is that it is Saavedro's motive rant (his quest for vengeance is understandable), to an epic tune.
* I guess the fact that the lyrics were merely ominous Narayani chanting disqualified it.

Disappointed to not see a Sonic song even in Honorable Mentions. There were at least three villain songs that could've easily qualified (E.G.G.M.A.N., What I'm Made Of and With Me).

@@sarahmorley7751 EGGMAN is.. well, Dr. Eggman's theme that's used in several games as his leitmotif (notably in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Generations). With Me is the final boss theme in Sonic and the Black Knight.

Love Red sun if only because Sundowner doesnt try to convince Raiden that his way of life is better then Raidens like every other boss does he just owns it, Hes a peace of shit, he loves war, *and hes Happy with that*

SO GLAD that Throw Your Mask Away made it in. That is by far my favorite villain song of all time because it's not. Really a villain song. "Is Maruki a villain?" is such a good discussion and that song is just BEAUTIFUL.

I would not call him a villain, but an antagonist.
It almost sounds like "It Has To Be This Way" is a duet of sorts. Raiden's voice is definitely the main one but, you can hear another voice singing slightly fainter along with it in some parts. It's almost as if Raiden and Armstrong are coming to the realization that they aren't so different and look at each other with newfound respect and admiration.
Throw Your Mask Away from P5R made me really emotional cause it's a really beautiful song but yet it's tragic cause what Maruki was doing wasn't really malicious and that he just wanted a better world for everyone to live in and to be happy and free from being in pain and no longer suffering but as Akechi would put it I don't want to live a lie and I don't want anyone just deciding everything for me cause I'm technically still being controlled I'm not free I'm still a puppet GOD this game has done things to meT.T

Maruki is the first example in my memory of an Anti-Villain in the Persona series, and I'm disappointed that he was only used as a post-game end boss, because a character like that deserves their own game.
Under the right circumstances, he could have been an ally of the Phantom Thieves, helping with targets who's hearts are corrupted by their own pain and trauma; you could have had two teams of Phantom Thieves to punish rapists and slavers like Kamoshida and Madarame, and help victims like Futaba and Sae Niijima. Heck most of the confidants are victims who are struggling and need help. Maruki could have been the therapist that they needed.
More like Maruki is the TRUE ending boss in Royal
If you don't fight him you'll either get the "False" ending when in the extra part of the game or get the standard ending from Vanilla Persona 5 if you don't meet the requirements to move to the Extended story
The game doesn't immediately end after Yaldaboath
It continues to the next portion if you completed Maruki's Confidant ranks
Maruki gives you the Choice to fight him, you don't just fight him. Akechi gives you a literal Dialogue option to see if you want to go through the last Palace or skip ahead and get an ending
Calling it now: The Great Mighty Poo from Conker's Bad Fur Day is at least gonna be an honorable mention, if not on the list

I agree as long as With Me from Sonic and the Black Knight is on the best final boss themes list! Say what you want about the rest of the game(to me it is a guilty pleasure), but that song is EPIC!...and kind of deep for Sonic standards.
I have to say, I'm REALLY happy he put Room of Angel on the list, even if it was relatively low on it. Silent Hill 1,2,3, and 4 have, collectively, one of my favorite soundtracks of all time, definitely in the top 5. Room of Angel in particular, despite its grim lyrics, is one I love very much.
The number transition is the best part of this list lol

I feel like Your Reality from Doki Doki Literature Club could have been an honourable mention. If nothing else, just the fact how catchy and iconic it is should really give it a mention.

"Throw Your Mask Away" is the perfect villain song double as the final boss song. I really felt bad for Maruki as he got twisted with his ideals to help people. Even the fist fight at the end is heartbreaking...

I mean: A Skeletor impression trying to do Queen, telling one of his minions to "Play faster, Williams" and imagining his victory before facing reality but also saying that he'll be back is...well, just hilarious.

I'm really happy Edge of Dawn made it on here. It is a rather beautiful song when you realise the meaning behind its lyrics, and what it says of Edelgard.

Honestly kinda surprised you didn't talk about "With Me" from Sonic and the Black Knight. A rocking track whose surprisingly grim lyrics are written in a way that goes back and forth from being from Merlina's perspective and from Sonic's perspective, their conflict portrayed almost as if they were conversing with one another. Also, the original version's guitar is performed by Marty Friedman of Megadeth.
Room of Angel is a song I haven't listened to in years. Thanks for reminding me. Loved it when I was younger.

My dad loves the game, and liked to play that song in the car when he would take us on errands. I was 9 so I never understood the meaning behind the lyrics, but we made a game out of putting more emphasis on the parts we found the funniest. That tradition carried over to it's sequel.
Man that made me nostalgic.
Personally, Adachi's theme from P4 Ultimax, "A Fool Or Clown?" will always be one of my favourites. I'm also occasionally partial to the P4 Golden Animation's "Ying Yang."
Adachi's theme is fantastic. One of the best video game pieces of music I've ever heard. Absolute BANGER

Quick honorable mention: "Go Tell Aunt Rhody" from Resident Evil VII.
I know this isn't sung by the main villain of the game (while she did hum it once or twice), it's still kind of haunting to make it sound like a children's song they teach at elementary school playgrounds. Almost like "Ring-Around-a-Rosie", but WAY more darker. And it gets even scarier as the song builds up until the final whisper.
Was delighted to see Throw Away Your Mask so high, Maruki is probably one of my favorite antagonists in recent time.

Edit: Phantom may be on the 9th place on this list, but at least he's actually on the list and getting attention! As much as I would totally praise this song as being the BEST, I have to admit that there could have been more to it. Like having the Phantom really, really roast Mario and his franchise hard until everything is nothing but ashes. Maybe have Phantom capture Princess Peach as his new girlfriend/"duet partner" or something (if you read the lyrics, it hints that Phantom has a crush on her).
4:47 - Also, fun fact: Phantom is voiced by Augustin Chemelle, a real opera singer! He has a channel here on RUclips as well.

it's play during you playing as Virgil. The song play during Virgil fight is Silver Bullet which is kinda Nero's theme.

In response to Edit 2, yes. Josh has played Devil May Cry. He's referenced it quite a number of times on his channel. And in response to Edit 1... I was honestly hoping that Your Reality from DDLC would be on this list, but I guess not.
@@RWBYraikou888 You know, that is a very good point about Your Reality. I guess it just wasn't as... grand as some of the others. Plus, I think that when Monika sings the song at that time, Monika isn't really a villain anymore, since she accepts that the game has to end and that she can't have the player.

A little disappointed “King of the Creatures” didn’t make the honerable mentions.
The interesting thing about Edge of Dawn, is that it has two reprisals, one sadder and one more hopeful and sweet (in this case being completely instrumental), both working as the two Three Houses Credits/Staff Roll themes.
The people that played the game know why the nicer version exists.

I can't believe I was shocked you put Still Alive at #1. I memorized the lyrics to that song as a kid with minimal effort and was obsessed with Portal for a while.
I hadn’t finished Three Houses yet but Edelgard was already my favorite from it and knowing what she’s going through now just makes me wish I could give her a big hug
Throw Away Your Mask is one of my favorite songs, period. Your take on it was fantastic, and I'm glad it was so high
There is one song that I would like to give honorable mention to: "What I'm Made Of" from Sonic Heroes. It actually is similar to "It Has To Be This Way", where you can't really tell if it's being sung from the perspective of the hero or villian

I'm trying to figure out if shiawase nara ii ya from Yakuza Kiwami counts. because it's sung by Majima, who is kind of a villain in the first game? But it's in the Kiwami edition, made after zero, a game where majima is a main character and is decently heroic. personally I'd count it tbh

Really hope Infinite is at least an honorable mention. Despite everything done wrong with the character the theme is really good

@@DaltonIzHere Replying to this months later, so you probably don't care or already know, but "You Wouldn't Know" is from Lego Dimensions. The song being what plays when you beat the Portal level.
I was so happy that Philistine got on here. The moment you talked about MadWorld, my brain went "Josh better have Philistine on here, too, or I'm gonna be sad"
But then it was the next entry and I was jumping for joy like crazy!
I always felt that the reverb-effect in It Has to Be This Way was meant to imply both Raiden _and_ Armstrong being the singers of it.
I also like how LEGO Dimensions made a callback to GladOs' song by playing a remix of it during the credits
So glad to see "Throw Away Your Mask" in there, such a powerful song for a great "not-exactly-villain"
A shame that *Bury The Light* from *DMC5* isn't on this list. It was quite a headbanger and does a really good job depicting Vergil's character.

Courtney gears from Ratchet and Clank up your arsenal would make a great contender for this list .
Adding onto the P5R theme with Maruki, while "Throw Away Your Mask" is sung from Maruki's side, "I Believe" is of course sung from Joker/the Thieves' perspective.
It says how they can reach up and do something much more, achieving our own goals and saying that one day We'll "Be able to touch down on the stars", meaning how we can reach even greater success on our own and alone than quietly being controlled by a force that may be good but is wrong in imprisoning the Human heart. Later on in the song, it says,
"It's our turn to get back,
To grab the future which we fully believe
And it's not given to us
It's earned!"
It ironically says how the thieves are here to basically save the day, yes, but they are here to make right and free everyone from this reality Maruki has created. If we are locked up to be slaves, what makes us different? Our own thoughts, personalities, ways of life, and overall differences are what make us human.

When it comes to Edelgard, she was the one I picked when I got the game. The reason being that up until the reveal, was wondering all there was to her, feeling she was crying out for help and I was trying to make her feel at ease. And while all the Flame Emperor stuff was going on, I was cautious, trying to discern them, yet, feeling they weren't just evil. Then when the reveal came, I chose to stand with Edelgard, because I could see she needed help to avoid falling into the darkness. I stood with her to save her soul. Sadly, the game's events are far too complex to save everyone and make peace, but I saw that Edelgard needed positive influences to show her a better way. Knowing more about Edge of Dawn now definitely adds a lot and reaffirms me in what I thought.
Every path has it's sacrifices, but in the end, the dream of a world without children turned into war machines was real, the world where crest don't matter.
Honestly, I'm surprised that In a Moment's Time from Skullgirls didn't make the cut, seeing how the combination of manipulation from a malevolent artifact and jazz combined to make a nice credits song, but at least I got to hear some catchy new songs I haven't before!
Legitimately, Maruki’s song and fight and character and everything about him was damn life changing for me. He’s incredible. That song, man… that song…

Oh! Seeing The Edge of Dawn here makes me so happy! I discovered the song independently of the games and fell in love with it- and now I know some of the story behind it!
Alright, so here's are a few of my predictions for this list: want you gone from Portal 2, Great might Poo from Conker, Phantom Rabbid's song from Mario + Rabbids, Philistine from No More Heroes 2, and 2 I really hope get in the Credits song from Double Dragon Neon and E.G.G.M.A.N. from Sonic Adventure 2.

For people who like video game villain songs, I highly recommend Bury the Light from Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition. From the POV of fan favorite Vergil, it's such a deep blend of the heavy rock the series is known for and soulful lyrics and vocals that perfectly describe the unwavering, dark mindset of Vergil's character, with the instruments and melodies used in unusual and haunting ways to create a truly memorable piece. It is such a beautifully intense song that it's easy to forget Vergil is indeed a villain even though the lyrics tell us in detail the hellish path he feels he has no choice but to tread.

While the game is technically not out yet, one potential candidate for this list that came out last year is “I’ve Had Enough of You” from Billie Bust-Up. On top of being a serious jam, the most interesting aspect of the song is that the accompanying boss fight (i.e. the boss’s attacks) actually plays in-time with the song. And while it does seem like a typical “I’m going to crush you/make you my puppet” kind of song, Daniel Ingram puts some serious flare into the lyrics.
I personally love Primal Dialga's theme from Eos. Sure it doesn't have lyrics, but everytime I heard it during the boss battle I knew I was in for a hard fight.

Expecting 'Phillistine', did not disappoint. Obligatory plug for the insane number of great boss songs Juno Songs have made lately.
I also really like Dare to Dream from Double Dragon Neon. Villain explains his entire motivation in a jazzy musical and expresses appreciation for his lieutenants for all that they've done for him, including playing the instruments, before lamenting that he never expected to see Billy Lee (Jimmy too!) to show up and stop him, ending with a vow to return one day to antagonize them once again.
